Video: the rumored Xbox 360 v2
61
Yesterday we showed you a photo of the rumored Xbox 360 v2 that should be coming down the pipelines soon. It'll supposedly have an HDMI port, and feature a 120GB drive in it, making it well worth it, particularly if it is priced the same as the current consoles. Now we have video of the system in question (codenamed Zephyr), and if you ask us it looks fairly real. Of course, as sister-site Xbox 360 Fanboy points out, the Linux penguin in the shot makes us very suspicious. Plus that plug/adapter setup at the rear of the 360 looks fairly nasty.
Normally when people mod consoles they add things like Christmas tree lights, liquid-cooling, and a built-in popcorn popper. Which doesn't mean that this thing is real, but so far we're still buying it, and we'll really be buying it when it hits a store near us. HDMI and a much bigger hard drive? Yes, please.

I don't really care about HDMI. Just want a bigger HDD (as a separate purchase) (and an easy way to transfer my data to said HDD).

Erm isn't the adaptop just a hdmi to dvi adaptor (although of course I'm not certain), so what's wrong with it, I'm not saying that this is real or not - just that the adaptor pluged into the hdmi port probibly isn't a reason to discredite this. However the point that Jmoney raises may well be a true reason to discreadite it.

I am going to copy and paste my comment from Engadget, as there are still people here who believe that it's a mod.
Who knew that amateur modders had the capabilities to completely re-design a chip they never had the schematics to, nor have the tools and resources available to them to create them.
There is no other explanation, a modder doesn't have the knowledge nor expertise to design a new processing chip (I am not talking about the CPU), and make those tiny solder connections. They do not have the original schematic for the chip - to know how it functioned, and they cannot reverse engineer it without millions of dollars of R&D (research and development).
Ross, and anyone else who still thinks it's just a mod... please, leave this discussion. You're wrong.

TO everyone that thinks this is a mod, understand that this thing has an entire new chip inside of it, which would be impossible to utilize without some sort of firmware upgrade. No modder/ hacker could make a 360 use a new chip or port, which is why there are no modchips for the 360 yet. At the very least, the HDMI port is real, and it works.

Oh, and to top it all off... what modder is going to do the impossible, as stated earlier, and then play it off as a hoax.
They're going to scream their name through the rooftops... that HANA chip wouldn't have a Microsoft label, and he would be prepping it for mass production so he could get rich.
So really, it is highly unlikely it's a modification to the console, as it is impossible to get a digital signal from the existing ANA chip in the 360, and to design a new chip,(which is shown with the name HANA, and labeled as Microsoft's design, HURR) they'd need top-notch engineers to reverse-engineer the design, then redesign it.
...and if they were to accomplish all that... they would have been praising themselves as the gods of modding...

What's with the HDMI to DVI adapter? If you're going to test HDMI, why not just use an HDMI cable?
Also, does HDMI add anything significant to the 360 other than the ability to play protected HD DVD content- which doesn't exist yet?

HDMI is all digital, so you get a better picture than analog (i.e. component or VGA). He is using an adapter most likely because he does not have an HDMI-compatible display. It's not even widescreen, so it was probably made before HDMI existed or became popular.

First Point witch Made me Belive right away it was a FAKE.
1. If it inded Included an HDMI output the smartest thing to do would be to show it to everione on the VIDEO SETTINGS of the system instead of puting a game.
the Video Settings would of have HDMI,Component,VGA and so on...
2.There was a Green Blanket behind the screen, Even an amateur can create another video connection and deviated troug the mount of the monitor ( where the blanket is set up).
3. For Godsakes this is a modder site.
4. I could do a pretier job photoshoping the Motherboard chips.
5. The only one that would have access to this kind of Hardware are people on the corporate level on microsoft so I don't think the TATTOOED UP guy on the video would have a LINUX Penguin in his office or house when he owns microsoft stocks.

On the DVI cable, my guess is simply twofold:
1. To prove the port actually works (as opposed to just being a jerry-rigged fakey)
2. Because his TV only has DVI (or HD content)

Go to video settings on your 360. Right now. Do you see the name of how your setup is hooked up? No, I didn't think so. It wouldn't say HDMI or VGA or Component because it doesn't have to. Whatever is plugged in is what it outputs through.

For people who only have a DVI connection on their tv and not HDMI, how are they going to get any sound output? MS would have to come out with a special adapter that would have an optical/analog audio out.

This is so unfair. Microsoft refused to giv eus a straight answer and kept leading us on that there was a possibility of a DVI or HDMI cable for the current Xbox 360. They did it as to not discourage sales, while completely shafting their customers who bought the current model. This is rediculous, and I, for one, am really pissed off. I wonder if once these are released if they'll be a second model to the current 360 or if it will replace the current one. If it's the latter, I'm buying an extended warranty and sending my current box as defective once people start confirming they're getting the new models back in replacment.
This is such BS. Way to shaft the early adopters, Microsoft. I wait 18 hours in the rain for your hyped up video game system which has already failed 5 times on me (I'm on my 6th unit, and I neverso much looked at my previous units funny) and the thank you that you hand out to the initial people who drove the initial hype and sales is by giving the newer buyers more features? Thanks. Thanks a ton.

The video itself doesn't proove anything, but the high-res photos on www.xbox-scene.com shows the circuit-board, the new scaler chip and the connector itself. Seems pretty real to me.
And as someone already stated, x-scene is a big community which have members high up in the ranks, often publishing news before other sources gets them.
I'm not saying that it's real either, but the site and the video is not a reason to say that it isn't so.

That's a modded system, and a bad one at that. First of if it was someone from MS don't you think that they would have used Gears of War instead of Kameo. Secondly their was a blanket at the bottom of the back of the TV covering up other AV connections.
Third the picture of the game play looked fuzzy doesn't HDMI makes a picture clearer and more sharper. I'm not convinced that MS is adding HDMI to the 360 at least for now.

My GamerTag is DWells55X. There's proof I have a 360. I have had it serviced 5 times now:
1. Unit blew a memory chip. Had the checkerboard freezing upon boot.
2. Severe video artifacting. Various color blocks sticking to 3D objects.
3. Unexplained 3 Red Lights. This was before I knew of the LED error code, so I don't know the issue.
4. Wouldn't read games. Eithe rsaid a disc was damaged/corrupt whatever, or it just played the DVD video layer of the disc that tells you to put the game in an Xbox 360.
5. Excessive freezing, particularly during backwards compatibility with Halo 2.
My current unit is running well, haven't had any lock-ups short of the buggy RBS: Vegas SP demo. I never opened or tampered with my failed units at all. They all sat on a well ventilated shelf where heat build-up was not an issue. No 3rd party accessories/cables/anything were used.
I'd freak out over a new iPod model if Apple had kept telling me that my current model would likely see a certain feature "when the market calls for it" and then turn around and make that feature exclusive to the new model. Microsoft led us on with HDMI support as to not discourage sales. If they had said from the very beginning that the current 360 model was incapable of supporting digital output, instead of avoiding it when they were asked, it'd be a different story.
Oh, and please don't tell me I don't know how to deal with electronic equiptment. I repair and mod Xboxes (the original) and PSPs, and I do PC servicing. I'm yet to have anyone unhappy with my work, either.

If it is real, microsoft isnt exactly abandoning early adopters. I played GoW in 1080p over VGA last week (the LCD TV has 2 hdmi and 1 VGA port). They are simply making more of the "hardware revision" process then the bare minimun.
If they make improvments, they can continue to justify a higher price for a longer time frame too. A larger HDD is almost definatly in the works anyways...why not "upgrade" the premium and rake in more money?

THE REASON THIS IS FAKE....
If microsoft does add a seperate HDMI input, i garentee you it will not be a standard HDMI cable input. Look at the current cable inputs, they would want you to buy their brand cable.
ALSO, using a standard HDMI cable would force you to run to audio to your TV via HDMI since there is no seperate auto jack. You're telling me microsoft is going to make it impossible to use to use HDMI + fiber optic sound to my receiver? yea right.
Even if this is true you ppl need to stop crying. Your hardware will function the same as when you baught it. All types of hardware will be upgraded eventually. Look at sony, apply, nintendo.

Wait, could you send an analogue signal over DVI?
I'm thinking they might've added the HDMI port on the box (case mod), re-wired the 360's regular vid-out pins to those of the HDMI "port", then used a HDMI-DVI converter, cos the TV accepts analogue over DVI... I mean, if it's real, then why not really plug it into an HDTV VIA HDMI??
If DVI doesn't carry analogue signals, I'm sorry and ignore this post :)

theres to many things about this that make me think its a mod, first off the fact the seiral numbers are all blanked out it makes it look as if we're not suposed to know its just a normal 360, second its not even shown running through HDMI. There are some easyer ways to show its a new machine like showing us the dashboard with the HDMI settings even creating a new profile in Kameo to show off the new hard drive would have given this greater credit. untill MS give us concrete details about this i can't really comment.
just my thoughts on this

Why would they use Kameo to display the 360 over a game like Gears of war? If they worked for Microsoft the would have wanted to show the best that the console has to offer instead a luanch tittle that is over a year old. At least they could have shown a video from xbox live marketplace running at 1080p.
Also as stated why would Microsoft put a standard HDMI port on the 360 so that any HDMI cable can be pluged into when they could/would use the existing video out port so that people would have to buy the Microsoft branded HDMI cables.
Finally if they wanted to prove it wasn't a fake they would have shown the larger HDD along with the HDMI.

Even if the HDMI ports are fake and this is a mod, we still know that there will be a new revision of 360 with the 65nm processors.
Doesn't really make much of a difference if you are already waiting for the new revisions before buying the 360 (I am). It would be cool if it gets more features other than the 65nm.

Second, I don't see why you are so pissed. You are still able to play any game that comes out from this day forward. It's not like they are introducing something that will force you to buy something new. They are just adding another display option. Big f-ing deal. I have a new SXRD and I can only get 1080p via HDMI, but I am perfectly happy with the component video 720p. Until a 1080p game comes out, I have no reason to want this new console. 1080p is not a big deal for the 360 unless you are into HD-DVD.

Sigh. Once again, explain how they are leaving you "hanging". Your 360 does exactly what it promised it would do when you bought it. You'll still be able to download stuff from Live. You'll still be able to play all the games. If HDMI was so important to you that you feel left hanging without it, you shouldn't have bought a console without it.

Oh and I should say if it is for real they better allow a rebate trade in on the old "analog only" premium 360s (less than a year old). I don't mind paying another $200 for example for an "upgrade" to the brand new (Premium) version but not the full whack AGAIN.
HDMI, 120gb drive, 65nm, quieter drives (possibly), cooler running etc are worth $200 upgrade price.

I believe DWells55. Why? Because i'm also on number 6,but I have a wordpad file full of times, dates, and service reps names documenting EVERYTHING in case I had to do some legal action to get a working 360. I also have faxes and all the instruction books and paperwork that comes back with the returned/repaired 360 for further proof. So don't call DWells55 a "retard" who can't take care of a system because mine is handled like it is,a $400 machine in a smoke free, child free environment where it sits in a ventilated space not moving anywhere.

I can't think of a modder out there who's able to fabricate a new processor.

Ok, there is nothing MS can do to get HDMI on the current Xbox. I know some disillusioned people out there still cling to this hope, but it is a pipe dream. It is not possible, thus this new console. So, let me ask you...would you rather them just not release this new revision at all? They can't offer discounts for 10 million users to trade in their consoles. That isn't realistic. What would you do if you were MS? They don't have a time machine to go back when they developed the console to put it in. HD technology is RACING. This is NOTHING like previous console generations...there is no comparison. TV resolution meant nothing until the Xbox made component video and 16:9 widescreen sexy, and even then it was not needed. These days companies are constantly coming up with new "must have" technology every year! What the hell is next? PS3 seems future proof enough, but trust me 1080p is not the end-all be-all resolution...even though it is silly to go any higher. 720p and 1080i were THE HD resolutions when the 360 was conceived. HDMI was not needed, and at the time there was DVI vs HDMI...so MS figured to go with component because every TV supported it. Basically, they went cheap because digital did not offer a true picture upgrade, and at 720p/1080i...it doesn't. Any differences in picture quality is usually just the placebo effect. Now, 1080p and Full HD are in-demand feature thanks to Sony and other TV manufacturers. Sony forced their hand, so now they either upgrade or be considered inferior. You tell me how MS should handle it.

I used to want HDMI out on my 360, but now I really don't care. I get 1080p over component and it looks great, very nearly as clean as the 1080p HDMI I get from my PC (though not as crisp, since it's all upscaled 720p anyway).
The 120GB drive is a lot more reason to be interested, and that'll be available separately for sure. And maybe a quieter DVD drive?
