#11: It wouldn't be possible for you watch Blu-Ray movies on a PS3 through an Optoma HD70 @ 1080i.

There are two reasons for this:

1. The PS3 doesn't output 1080i. It outputs 720p & 1080p, but not 1080i.

2. The Optoma HD70 you say you are using does not display 1080i. It diplays a max. resolution of 1280x720 (720p). It's also DLP-based, which means it's a fixed-pixel display, and doesn't display interlaced resolutions, so even if it were capable of 1920x1080, it would be 1080p, not 1080i.

Sony sounds like that little punk who can't stand to lose, so he changes the rules last second. You know the type...

"First one to the door wins." *loses* "I mean first one in the seat." *loses* "No, I meant this seat. I WIN!" *uh....still loses*

Lol, the Wii already shipped at least 4 million units. It's not that far off to think they have sold that many as well.

You mean the 720p only Optoma HD70?

El Chino most movie studios also back HD-DVD. The movies with the blu-ray promotions you see on tv look up who owns the movie it is a Sony Pictures. Remember all those commericals stating out on UMD along with DVD?

20. I like how we are comparing the SHIPPING numbers of the PS3 to the SALE numbers of the 360. They can ship 10 million to the USA and all that would mean is that instead of 12 PS3s sitting on floors of stores everywhere it would be 120.

Dumbass Sony fanboys....

UMMM its the SAME retard. if the 1 million PS3s sold includes the PS3s still on store shelves, then the 10.4 million 360's has to include the HUNDRED stacked up in stores. have you looked at best buy lately? they have literally HUNDREDS stacked up around the store.

i love how whenever a company releases sales numbers, fanboys claim "NOOOO thats only the number SHIPPED but SO and SO actually SOLD this many".

Sony can launch In Europe whenever they want. All they need to do is ask all the Best Buys to send back their PS3s and that would be enough for a Europe launch.

I don't think you understand the number one hundred must less the concept of "hundreds". I have never been to ANY store that has HUNDREDS of Xbox 360's sitting around. How many hundreds sirpilf? 200, 300, did you sit and count or are you just full of shit? I mean, I'm not saying that you did'nt see a lot of Xbox 360's this holiday season. I'm sure you did and you know what, great, fine, awesome for you. But face it. You did not see "HUNDREDS" of Xbox's lying around Best Buy. Unless your to stupid to know how big a hundred of anything is you sir, are full of shit.

Don't bother posting a responce.

The End.

I'll say it this way, I haven't been to a store all this holiday season that didn't have at least as many 360s sitting around as PS3s. So again, if Sony's figures are misleading due to units sitting on store floors, then so are MS' figures.

That's why you only compare shipped to shipped and sold through to sold through.

Has anyone clicked on the link provided titled "check their math"?

The information contained therein reports:

Cumulative Production Shipments of Hardware / PlayStation®2

2000/12/31 6.4 million units (Japan: 3.94 million/ USA: 1.46 million/ Europe: 1.0 million)

Ok, assuming that the current report from Sony is true, that 1 million PS3's were shipped by 12/31/06, the end of it's first holiday season. The number above for the PS2 is 1.46 million for the US by 12/31/00, the end of the first holiday season for the PS2.

Can someone please explain to me how 1 million > 1.46 million?

At this point we can probably agree on *approximate* worldwide shipped numbers for all three consoles:

360: 10.4 million shipped
Wii: 4 million shipped
PS3: 1.5 million shipped

Now to wait for the NPD numbers...

Then why has every motion picture company except Universal have backed Blu-Ray and Disney doing Blu-Ray exclusive."

Obviously they aren't backing Blu-Ray good enough, since they have not yet release a mus thave movie. Even Disney doesn't have anything good coming this year.

I don't see either HD format winning any year soon, if at all. The movie studios will see past Sony's scheme of labeling gamers as BD buyers when the movie software sales comes in.

Well the price will always prevent sales really picking off...but a few things we have to keep in mind: [1] the PS3 did so well DESPITE having competiton unlike 360 [2]360 took 11 months to hit 6m units worldwide and if Sony can meet their 6mil target even by June, they should be happy [3] pro-MS fanboys (like Joystiq) gloss over the fact that if you compare the games PS3 will have in one year (5-6 great exclusives such as heavenly sword, motorstorm, lair, UT2007, MGS4 etc and non-exclusives such as GTA4, oblivion, Assasin's creed) it beats what 360 has by miles. Fact: 24mil XBOX fans had just one decent franchise: Halo. And PS3 already have an equal in R:FOM. And finally - think of this as a marathon. The 360 started an hour early, so they are ahead by a few km. But the race isnt over yet!

Wait a minute, how have MS' numbers magically changed to "sold" all of the sudden. They have always used "shipped" when talking about anything relating to their consoles.

360 SOLD 600k units during the NA launch according to NDP. That 900k is what they shipped here.
Sony SHIPPED 1m, but it still remains to be seen how many they actually sold. They could have sold more, they could have sold less, but reminding us they said shipped when the company you're comparing them to does the same thing seems a little unfair.

No, it's not you. Joystiq does lean heavily towards M$ and Ninty. One look at one of their polls is all you need to confirm this. Their polls never reflect actually consumer feelings. If you believed what you read on this site you would conclude that the xbox and gamecube kicked the PS2's ass. Joystiq is Ballmer's bitch.

45. Hmm.. is it me, or does Joystiq very pro-ms and very anti-sony? i've noticed they find fault in everything sony and nothing ms? is it an american support thing? Is that how they get to have lunch with mr bill gates? lol

MS got the same level of bashing when the 360 launched - and rightly so. It was carnage on the forums for a while - just in reverse of what we are currently seeing.

Sony have shot themselves in the foot / feet / legs / head!! countless times over the PS3 and deserve the level of bashing they are currently getting.

The only console to get off lightly (at the moment) is the Wii - and that got some serious stick when the name was announced.

I'm already waiting with anticipation of the next-next-gen fanboy wars when the 720, PS4 and Wiii launch!

I predict the desensitisation of our culture caused by photo-realistic images of violence in videogames will lead to groups of fanboys actually taking up arms and going to war! Well, I hope so anyway, it might cut down on the amount of rabid BS we see on some of the Joystiq posts! :)

Joystiq isn't a pro-MS fanboy. They cheer for whoever seems to be winning - a fair-weather friend if you will. When Sony unleashed the bullshit Killzone trailer in E3 2005, Joystiq was all over the PS3 like a rash. The "Real next generation", apparently didn't start until the PS3 was out. They couldn't really be arsed with the 360 which apparently had a disappointing showing.

Of course now that Sony's taking a kicking for all sorts of stupidity from their marketing to their arrogance, from their insistence on Blu-ray to their $599 price for the PS3, from Riiiiiidge Racer! to the death of the UMD movie format; and Joystiq has decided to jump ship and back the winner.

It's ok to be a piss-poor fair-weather fan I guess, but I hope they don't think that no-one notices or that no-one remembers what fanboy bullshit they spout from one month to the next depending on who's currently on top.

Quit being the Sony fanboy. If you're using "PS3 in a year", use "360 in a year" as well.

If you really know the difference and don't care then it is not meant for someone like you who can not appreciate it. It really does not matter though. Come on people, look at the hard facts. Blu Ray and Sony will triumph...that is why I support them. HD-DVD is awesome too, but there is no game support from MS and no enough backing for them to succeed. Even an idiot can figure that out. I'm not even going to talk about future specs of BluRay (50-75 GB discs!....Hmmm....now why on earth would we need more capacity??? DVD's work just great! You must be a 360 fanboy #16. So sorry!

Of course Wii's are selling out....they don't cost $600. That is a lot of money to the average joe. When the PS3 cost $300 and the Wii is $150, and Blu Ray is the estabished movie format, I wonder what the sales numbers will be like? I'm so sure that the Wii will outsell the PS3 3-1, just like how the GameCube kicked PS2's ass! ~end sarcasm~

Here is a link to the HD70's specs:

http://www.projectorpeople.com/projectors/projdtls.asp?itemid=21351&itmname=Optoma%20HD70&tab=specs#tabs

Native resolution is 720p. It will accept ALL HD formats, including 1080i, which is available via component video, but I'm sure you you know that since you're so smart. I would be happy to send you screenshots. They kick ass! The projector also has an HDMI input. I paid $880 at Best Buy for a 104" HD picture. That's hard to beat.

I am thinking of buying an Optoma HD70 to use with a PS3. If I output the video from the PS3 using HDMI, what are my options for audio? Since I assume the HDMI cable connected to the projector cannot also carry audio and I have read that when HDMI is in use use the optical audio output is disabled, what are my audio options? Can I use the RCA audio out for simple two channel stereo while HDMI cable is also connected or will connecting the HDMI cable cut out all non-HDMI audio, leaving me with no sound at all? If anyone here has a PS3 hooked up to the Optoma HD70, I'd like to know how you are handling audio.
