Post #1: When the cliffhanger occurs RIGHT BEFORE the giant final battle. Cliffhanger's are fine, but without a satisfactory conclusion to a game or film's individual story, they're worthless.

Prey had a terrible ending, not least because of a horribly unexciting boss.

Sure, that boss was well designed, but there was nothing at stake!
With the potentially well-designed instant revive system, it didn't matter if I went at the guy with the infinite ammo gun; the boss would eventually die, and no matter how long I spent I would not die. I think I revived myself about 10 times during that sequence there.

Then right after that uninteresting "Oh no. I have to kill this big bad guy. *Snore*" moment, I am shown an ending alluding to a sequel.
I normally don't mind so much, but since the first Prey has been in development for an eternity it seems a rather dumb thing to do.
Besides that, it honestly would not hurt to just end it there rather than turning the thing into a series.
I, for one, find it rather embarrassing how EVERY SINGLE big game out there has a number after it. It simply reinforces the crazy idea of many video game dissers out there have, which is that they are all the same stupid things. Shouldn't developers be trying to /avoid/ that?
We've got children's films like that weird thing with dinosaurs that go on for 50 million iterations, and it just gets stupid. Endless sequels are associated with cash-cows, and cash-cows are associated with dumb.

The Amiga version of Shadow of the Beast.

For all the effort you'd put into actually completing that torture, all you got was a static "Congratulations" message, and you had to reboot to replay.

In retrospect, though, SOTB was a pretty bad game.

Call of Duty 2 had a terrible ending with the most disorienting FPS level I have ever played. Running around a nameless French village destroying urban-locked artillery was completely anti-climatic when compared to the Berlin siege of the first game.

Bad Dudes for NES, anyone? You save the president, and what do you get?

"Hey dudes, thanks for rescuing me. Let's go for a burger....Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Then again, even the intro was a bit lacking...

"The president has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?"

I remember my friend rented a Mickey Mouse platform game for the NES ages ago.

At the end you had to rescue Minnie Mouse, then, when you rescued her, Mickey and Minnie both stood and faced the screen. Immediately after that, the title screen appeared.

To this day, I still consider that the lamest ending EVER.

Christ my mind is going...I think it was Shinobi, or the original Ninja Gaiden. Black screen "GAME OVER" and that was it. Cliffhanger endings are terrible, why? Because the resolution isn't for 3-4 years later. At least END the game and hint at some cliffhanger stuff. Look at Spiderman 2 (movie), movie ends but o0o0o00o, junior finds the gay goblin armor. So you're left with "Cool, movie is over, but there will be more". Halo 2 ending, M.C flying towards earth, you gear up and you're like yeah baby it's on....here come the credits....i beat down a monkey and this is my reward? I say put more thought into your endings, rather than your trailers and intros.

I don't know why game companies don't spend more time on the ending. There's all this buildup to get you started (intro), but at the end it lets you down. This was my biggest problem with Final Fantasy VII. The game was great until the ending.

Worst ending ever? Tetris. BECAUSE IT DOESN'T.

The almost-worst game ending ever, though, was KH2. I got past the first incarnation of Xemnas, and it goes into that long sequence where everyone goes home except Riku and Sora, and I was like, "Shit, that was kinda cool, but I totally expected something-HOLY HELL THAT IS A GIANT ROBOT DRAGON." Needless to say, all turned out well.

The first Kingdom Hearts has of the worst endings EVER!!! Just the trio walking with Pluto and still no sign of the you-know-who (won't say who he is, must not spoil the game for those who haven't played it).
However, videogame storylines in general have improved a lot. In the 8-bit days (and a good part of the 16-bit era) was all about: "Bad guys have kidnapped your girlfriend/wife/sister/mother (or whatever damsel in distress they chose)".
Some newer games have a nice storyline (MGS series is the prime example, IMHO), but some also have lackluster ending that pair up with "Congratulations, thank you for playing, game over and insert another coin!".

Dr. Chaos for the NES was the worst ending I've ever seen. I still remember it after all these years. After you finish suffering through that awful game, you get a black screen with the following words: "Congratulations! You are great. Game over." That's it. It's almost worth playing through again just to screenshot that. Almost, but not quite.

First,Kevout, the Locust riding on the back of the reaver was the ending of Gears,Cole Train rap was a few minutes into the credits.

And how is Halo 2 a bad ending? I still to this day can't figure that out. It's not like the game was short and it was a rushed ending or anything. So what if it's a cliffhanger, there are many game with cliffhanger endings, are they all bad too? If so,why don't we hear about them as often if they are equally bad as Halo 2?? The game was a cliffhanger because obviously something else is supposed to continue. What happens if something shoots down the ship you and the prophet are on and you DON'T kill him,but continue playing to the end of game's story?

Anyone here ever play an X-Com game? FYI: IGN gave X-Com: UFO Defense the "best game ever" award in 199X (X being well after Starcraft released).

I've beaten UFO Defense, Terror from the Deep, Interceptor, and just now Apocalypse.

X-Com Apocalypse has one of the worst endings ever...after beating the final mission (close the alien dimension gates) it shows a picture of an X-Com ship and a small text blurb:

'With the dimension gates closed the alien threat to our dimension has been neutralized. X-Com has triumphed. Congradulations!

Final Score: 123456'

Haha #20 re: Tetris! =)

#3 - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Not the ending sequence, but the end boss(es). Having spent all the extra time to collect all 27 masks meant that I was imbued with ridiculous power in Fierce Diety Link, and Majora wasn't any amount of challenge at all to squelch.

#2 - Beyond Good & Evil. Amazing game. Horrid ending (post-credits), only because it was such a cliffhanger, with NO hope of a sequel in sight. =/

#1 - Rayman: Raving Rabbids. I'll try not to *SPOIL* anything, but as one who who tried to follow the light storyline in between the minigames, the ending was depressing as heck. =/

*LOL at kilodelta's comment*

A long, long time ago, I had finally reached the last guy in Dragon Warrior and before you fight him, he asks if you want to join his side. I was like, hell yeah, lets do it. So I pick the option to rule by his side, and he tells me to sleep first. The screen turns red and the game freezes. That's it, I can't hit a button to come back or restart, that's one of the two endings you can get in Dragon Warrior. It didn't even go to the credits. So I had to reset the entire console and start at the last place I saved, which was all the way outside the bastard's castle.

I never played the game again.

Winning for having both an awful and great ending is Psychonauts. The Big Top was the most tedious, unforgiving area in ANY game and it was such a crappy final area. Yet, once you could get past it, the ending videos were awesome and the potential for a sequel tingles my funny bone.

Man, the worst ending ever would be Battletoads for the NES. The RARE game was tight, possibly one of the hardest ever made for the NES. After 10 gruesome levels that challenged every type of dexterity you could ever need in a videogame, you get rewarded with a... wait for it... Motherfriggin' TEXT SCREEN! that's it, nothing more... it has scarred me to this very day :(

Cliffhangers are bad endings if you paid $50 for the game. Yes, we can look forward to the next game, but paying $50 and not getting any sense of closure from an engrossing storyline is unacceptable. Halo 2 is a good example - I played the first two games, loved the storyline, and then I have to wait a year and pay an extra $50 just to get to the end (assuming Halo 3 doesn't end on a cliffhanger).

This besides that fact, a sequel isn't always guaranteed - how many games with cliffhanger ending just leave us hanging ... forever?
