Rumor: Virtua Fighter 5 is 1080p
True HD, if you ask some people, is only 1080p. It's a shame, then, that few PlayStation 3 titles have yet to push resolution that high. Virtua Fighter 5, then, would be a great addition to the small library of 1080p games.According to a scan at IGN, the latest edition of Sega's flagship fighter might support 1080p resolution. However, the scan of the back of VF5's box is very fuzzy and could easily be just a Photoshop job by those abusing the Internets. Not only that, but we're pretty sure Sega or Sony would be mentioning 1080p as often as possible.
We should know definitively by February 8, whenVirtua Fighter 5 lands in Japan.

OMG 1080p my life makes sense now. Seriously other than technology whores this makes no difference to the rest of us.

"so VF5 may look better on 1080p on PS3 than 360"
A. The 360 could also do it in 1080p if it's true. The 360 is graphically superior after all, don't tell me you are the only one left to not know this?
B. 1080p doesn't really matter atm either way, how many people do you know with a 1080p TV? Most will play it at 720p anyway which negates it.
C. For a simple game set in a single area like VF5 is I should HOPE they could do it in max res or it says something about how seriously underpowered and over hyped the PS3 is (mind you, all sane people already know this).
I could mention all the areas of the 360 that has the PS3 beat but I would just sound like a fanboy so please go do some research and look for "gamer-centric-features"... a couple to start you off though:
1. Rumble
2. GPU

You're being kinda silly there samik.
1) Virtua Fighter is hardly a killer app. Consider the Playstation 2: The best selling game in Japan (DQ8) sold 3.6mil copies in that fabled land! How many did Virtua Fighter 4 sell? 557k, or only the 44th best selling game in Japan for the PS2. It did even worse here!
2)I am not exactly a fan of Microsoft, (They make some of the worst software on earth) but I have never noticed a bias, for or against, concerning Microsoft or Sony. They tend to be somewhat more questioning of Nintendo than I am, but I'm a fan (not fanboy) of Nintendo, so I can see that maybe this colors my perception. Can you do the same thing?
3)Nobody cares about 1080p except rich people. There are nessicarily few of those.
4)Not a single one of the games you listed (for either the PS3 or the 360) interest me! Maybe people have different tastes in games than you do!
5)Calling Gears of Wars a minigame is pretty funny. I don't even like the game and I can tell it's very polished and extensive for what it is (a generic FPS).
6) Pie is Tasty.
dynamius @ Jan 9th 2007 6:37AM
samik,
it's people like you that overreact to all comments less than perfect about ps3. i see no harm in that comment. truth is sony's been bragging about 1080p this whole time and what do people get? barely any 1080p games. is it wrong to wish?
ps3 didn't deliver on what was promised. it's disappointing.
sounds like you're a rather bitter that the 360 is doing so well.
mammoo @ Jan 9th 2007 6:38AM
@samik
You do realise that VF5 has been confirmed for the 360 and, since the 360 can do 1080p just as easily as the PS3 can (in fact, the 360 was the FIRST console to output 1080p) I am sure the 360 version will be 1080p as well!
And slating GOW as a 5-hour minigame. Wow, you really must be a fan boy if you enjoyed Resistance!

Loved your comment and gotta agree that GoW should have had alot more content for the ammount of praise that it gets..
@3 "Not a single one of the games you listed (for either the PS3 or the 360) interest me! Maybe people have different tastes in games than you do!"
Yeah, cause nobody likes Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto, or Final Fantasy... those are just horrible horrible games![/sarcasm]
Again @3: "Pie is Tasty."
DAMN RIGHT IT IS!!
mammoo @ Jan 9th 2007 6:45AM
@anyone
And furthermore... the PS3 version will NOT look better than the 360 version. Given how long PS3 developers have had to work with the hardware there is no way they can match the 360 at the moment (just look at all the launch games - COD3, THP8 etc).
I'm not saying PS3 games won't look better years down the line when devs have got the hang of it (but from personal experience and from speaking with other developers I don't even think this will happen), but I am saying that right now, the PS3 is a year behind and it shows.
syco @ Jan 9th 2007 6:47AM
I missed the FF13 comment, I recend that remark, I am always at least interested in Final Fantasty games.
Also, I said "I" was not interested in those games, I did not mean to imply that nobody likes those games. My tastes do not reflect the gaming world at large, and neither does samik's.
Fubar @ Jan 9th 2007 7:05AM
Hey Samik, Joystiq isn't a pro-MS fanboy. They cheer for whoever seems to be winning - a fair-weather friend if you will. When Sony unleashed the bullshit Killzone trailer in E3 2005, Joystiq was all over the PS3 like a rash. The "Real next generation", apparently didn't start until the PS3 was out. They couldn't really be arsed with the 360 which apparently had a disappointing showing.
Of course now that Sony's taking a kicking for all sorts of stupidity from their marketing to their arrogance, from their insistence on Blu-ray to their $599 price for the PS3, from Riiiiiidge Racer! to the death of the UMD movie format; and Joystiq has decided to jump ship and back the winner.
It's ok to be a piss-poor fair-weather fan I guess, but I hope they don't think that no-one notices or that no-one remembers what fanboy bullshit they spout from one month to the next depending on who's currently on top.
Also, Sony brings this kinda criticism on itself by banging on about how the 360 wasn't really HD as it didn't support 1080p. They went on about how the PS3 was so powerful it would support TWO displays - each at 1080p and at 120fps. And then it's released and hardly any games support that resolution on ONE screen at HALF that frame-rate. Sooner or later people have to realise that people want PROOF to back up these claims, and if you can't supply it then either STFU or look like a prick. Sony chooses to look like a prick time and time again.

I love how every Sony fanboy compares Resistance to Perfect Dark Zero. It's really hilarious. No one is biting on that argument stupids.

@ samik
Umm, you do know the PS3 was originally supposed to launch around the same time as the 360, right? You do know that the cell processor design was finished long ago, right?
I beleive a LAUNCH game for a system with multiple delays can be fairly compared with games that were released this november for the 360, since they had the same amount of time in development. The sad part is the system that was thrown together in 1 year (I know you remember E3 and X05, the Sony camp loved calling the games xbox 1.5 games and stop motion animation becasue of the frame rates) has a better showing.
But I will conceed it's the best value for a blu-ray player on the market.
ouj @ Jan 9th 2007 7:34AM
"ps3 didn't deliver on what was promised. it's disappointing."
Yeah. Telling what a console can or can't do when it's been available for a few weeks makes sense, really.
By the way, Wii games look really shitty even though it's supposed to be three times more powerful than Gamecube. And apart from Zelda, the games are more or less forgettable garbage.
I think I can claim now that "Nintendo didn't deliver. It's really disappointing."
bo @ Jan 9th 2007 7:40AM
ouj, wtf does nintendo have to do with VF5 in 1080p???
not bitter are we?
dynamius @ Jan 9th 2007 8:10AM
"Yeah. Telling what a console can or can't do when it's been available for a few weeks makes sense, really."
so you're just going to ignore everything sony said in the past 2 years about what ps3 was meant to be, just like their claims about ps2?
fool you once, shame on them. fool you twice, shame on you.
hey, if you comprehend even the basics of hardware architecture and capabilities, you'd understand that ps3 is nowhere near as capable as it was intended to be. processing power and graphically speaking, you're looking at capabilities at same level as a 360. believe what you will, but the chips used inside the ps3 are from over a year ago (rsx is a derivative of the geforce 7 series).
it's unfortunate sony had to delay the ps3 launch by a year due to blue laser diode shortages, now they have a "new" product with "year old" hardware. now they will always be behind by a year.
BillDoE @ Jan 9th 2007 8:21AM
"True HD, if you ask some people, is only 1080p."
Some people are Idiots and have no idea what they are talking about.
Sponge @ Jan 9th 2007 8:30AM
If Gears is a minigame, what does that make RFOM? A tech demo?
grovberg @ Jan 9th 2007 8:59AM
!.) You're all retarded. Validate your purchases somewhere else.
2.) Just because a game says is "supports" 1080p doesn't mean that it actually is 1080p. Just like a display "supports" 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p when it's actual vert resolution is 768.
Fantisimo @ Jan 9th 2007 8:41AM
Nerds arguing about video games. Seriously guys, drop it; you appear foolish in the eyes of others.
Graham @ Jan 9th 2007 8:46AM
OK people calm down.
It will be rendering the scene in a lower resolution to a render target, then rendering that into a 1080p backbuffer. So while things like the menus and UI will be nice and sharp, the actual scene won't be.
Besides, the game internally renders to a FP16 render target, which is not a supported backbuffer format anyway.
The latest batch of screenshots show this too.
eg:
http://playsyde.com/pop_image.html?G=4793&N=7
note the upscaled look, lack of anti-aliasing (no AA with FP render targets on the PS3..) and the UI is sharp.
ElementsUnknown @ Jan 9th 2007 2:47PM
For those of us who do have TV's that do 1080p natively news of games that do 1080p (either native or supported) is great news. Right now RFOM pales in comparison to Gears on my LCD mostly because one is in upscaled 1080p and the other is in 720p over HDMI. If sony was planning not to include internal upscalers in their hardward then they should have mandated a 1080p option on the games certified for their platform. There is a rumor that Motorstorm will be in 1080p as well (link http://video.i4u.com/ces.php?url=ces/Interview-Sony-PS3-MotorStorm-Digital-Experience.wmv&p=1) but I doubt the girl in the video knows what she is talking about.
DBX00 @ Jan 9th 2007 9:43AM
Let's stick to the point.
1) Virtual Fighter 5 will be available in February for the PS3 (I prefer Tekken, so they need to hurry up and at lease release the downloadable version to the US)
2) It will support all the major high definition formats. Everyone will be able to enjoy it to the fullest at whatever resolution they have available. A lot of televisions these days above 42 inches support 1080p and any size below that would not really take advantage of it.
3) The title has time exclusivity until it is released for the XBOX360 at some later date. I don't really care whether or not the 360 version supports 1080p through VGA or some future HDMI revision, but more power to those users.
Nick Mercer @ Jan 9th 2007 12:22PM
I'm surprised they dont just upscale all the games to 1080p and call it HD. Get away doing it the cheap method.
