Dead Rising sequels shambling forth

Having shipped over one million copies of their Romero-inspired zombie massacre sim, Capcom can confidently dub Dead Rising a full-on franchise. Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Capcom's head of consumer games confirms that further zombie-mashing titles are due to arrive on consoles in the future (feel free to let out a collective gasp).
"When you're at the front-end of a hardware cycle, people are willing to take more of an experiment in what games they'll try," says Mark Beaumont. "Bringing out Dead Rising has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come." It's always refreshing to see brand new franchises take off, especially when chainsaws are involved.
Controversial save mechanics and shameful SDTV support aside, we fully expect the next Dead Rising to be considerably more pleasant than being torn apart by a snarling, undead force.

I would like to see a PREQUEL that's set in the 1970s! Imagine that -- the action could take place in a 1970s-style mall.
boshe @ Jan 10th 2007 4:40PM
great. i hope its exclusive for the Xbox 360.
gwangi @ Jan 10th 2007 4:41PM
Oh happy days! I think I will play some Dead Rising tonight.
Vexorg @ Jan 10th 2007 4:41PM
Maybe if they work on the mechanics a bit, they might even be able to make it better than a poke in the eye with a sharpened stick.
matthew @ Jan 10th 2007 4:41PM
I started Dead Rising, then put it down for a long while after I decided I didn't like the save system and that something was just a little bit off.
The best decission I ever made as a gamer was to give it another chance a couple of weeks ago. After sort of figuring it all out, I came to the conclusion that this is the best game on the 360. I also came to the conclusion that the save system problem is not only overblown, but one of the things that makes the game fun. I hope it returns in the sequel. There are a lot of save points, and the missions aren't long enough to where you really get overly punished for dying.
The depth of the game is incredible as well. There are so many weapons, so many different ways to play through the game, and so much hidden stuff. The replay value is through the roof. This game is a 10.

that picture is fucking scary.. clowns are bad enough as it is
Hoffer @ Jan 10th 2007 5:10PM
They need to change the controls of the game to be more like other 3rd person games. This game drove me nuts after a while. I quit playing it when I got to the chick on the motorcycle. She killed me like 4 times, and I just gave up on the game.
A lot of zombies are cool. When you have to shake 20 of them off while running through an area, it gets old.
Another thing I hated was the convicts in the jeep. I killed them once, after them killing me like 10 times. Then the next time I come outside, they're back. WTF!!
I really wanted to love this game. It had so much potential to me. I really hope they work on the game and flush out some of the problems I had with it. DR2 would be a rental only for me based on my experience with the first.

"After sort of figuring it all out, I came to the conclusion that this is the best game on the 360. "
I agree. It's much more entertaining then everyone's beloved Gears of War.
Hopefully they can figure out some kind of multiplayer mechanic, and not have achievements that take 14 no-saving hours to get (5 & 7 days are the only ones I didn't get). That's all I ask for the next game, although SDTV-friendly text would be good for those without the cash to get an upgrade (27" LCD for the price of a PS3...do it! hee hee).
VerdigriS @ Jan 10th 2007 5:29PM
I don't see the big complaint with the save system. I think people who suck at the game just want something to complain about. There is one save point in EVERY section of the mall, not to mention one at the main base where you have to go after EVERY mission... how hard is that? Unless you are a little 'du du derr' in the head it doesn't seem that hard to me.
Also about Hoffers comment-
I would recommend just starting over, as the game retains your experience points and upgrades. Most guides recommend you do this. You will find the game a lot easier and you will have leveled up to a high enough point where the motorcycle chic will be alot easier. Otherwise you could just climb up to the highest scaffolding to your left and take pot shots at her, and when she drives away just jump down and climb back up to lure her back out.

I think everyone knew this was coming but I'm glad to hear it. Endless zombie hordes really did come off as something that couldn't have been done correctly before.
Considering how early in the life of the 360 this came out I am really looking forward to what more they could do on this franchise (now that it is one) versus the "this seems like a good idea lets make a quick game out of it."
I did pretty much the exact same thing as matthew, bought the game day 1 played for a bit didn't care for the save system and let it sit for a few months. Then picked it back up with a different mentality (the demo really makes you think you were just going to run around and slaughter zombies) and couldn't believe how good the game really is.
I think they should stick with the save system and even the restart with your leveled up character, which I initially despised (I realized this game is "Groundhog Day" in hell, you relive it until you do it right, but you do gain from your experiences.)
I would love to see them make aiming on ranged weapons better. A lot of Frank's (the main character) abilities were useless or too difficult to pull off, the game would be a lot better if they made his moves easier to actually do.
I would really like to see the photography system beefed up. At first I found it to be a tacked on gimmick (I'm pretty sure it was) but I liked it. Imagine if you could get better cameras, better lenses, etc... this could be tied in with if you get out of the place how well the story you release to the public goes over. It would add depth to this feature of the game and I don't think would be very difficult to implement.
Finally and honestly the biggest improvement that could be made: Co-op. Not multiplayer in general (though death match in a zombie filled area could be interesting) but Co-op. I don't think there would be much more rewarding then surving a mall full of f***ing zombies with a friend.
I would love to have a direct line to Capcom on this as I think Ive ranted on long enough but still have a lot of things I think would seriously make a good game great.
So I have to disagree with Hoffer and say everyone needs to play this game. It might not be a good game for some people, but a lot of people who have passed this over will quickly find this game is one of the most entertaining experiences you will have on the 360. (I like this game so much I want them to release it on the PS3 because everyone should have a chance to experience it... plus as much as I am not a fan of Sony it would be cool to shake the controller to knock a zombie off of you)
LordMinogue @ Jan 10th 2007 5:51PM
After killing Adam (pictured clown) and saving his saws for boss battles, I found I could kill even the final boss in something like 8 hits.
A friend of mine committed Zombie Genocide and unlocked the Mega Buster...its a brilliant easter egg.
The save system wasn't my problem, the pacing of the game was. New players will likely have to play through the game twice to reach the true ending cause side missions often conflict directly with the main plotline.
dekox @ Jan 10th 2007 6:21PM
A dead rising on wii would kick some serious ass.
razer @ Jan 10th 2007 7:16PM
Dead Rising is in my top 5 favs on the 360. The save system never bothered me because I got what they were trying to do in the first place. Without it's save system I don't think it would of had as much drama. Trying to find some food when your corned by 100 zombies is some frantic fun. I will be all over DR2 when it's released for the 360(only!?!).
Jedijoe9 @ Jan 10th 2007 7:32PM
Having just finished the game yesterday, the news of a Dead Rising sequel makes me very happy.
As for the save system, I think that was one of the best parts. I hate it when you can save everywhere in a game. Hell, if you could save anywhere, anytime, knowing that you could reload at multiple points, there would not be much excitement. Especially considering it's a horror game.
and LordMinogue. you can triple book Adam's chainsaws and they can be used for just about every boss in the game. They are truly awesome.
Morgan @ Jan 10th 2007 8:05PM
I loved the first one and I think it's tied with Gears for game of the year, but
If they make the AI smarter,
Make the combat a little more than just hitting the X button,
And make it longer
Dead Rising 2 could be the best 360.
Krammit @ Jan 10th 2007 8:24PM
Umm....am I the only one here that sees the word "consoles", as in more than one console in the article?
C'mon fannies, you're slacking on the Sony bashing...
Namrepus221 @ Jan 10th 2007 8:30PM
If they release a sequel it has to have some things in it.
1. IT CANNOT INVOLVE FRANK AT ALL. I'm sorry, but Frank isn't the kind of guy that lives in the "Why does this keep happening to me" type story line. Extraordinary person, extraordinary circumstances was the key to the first game. Maybe have Frank be a hidden Zombie in the game and taking a picture of him get's you an achievement or soemthing. But He shouldn't show up beyond that.
2. Online mode. Definte must. Anyone here that has played "Zombie" on Halo will understand this play mechanic and where I'm going with this. I'd love to play 10 man teams trying to hunt down the flesh of the others and make them one of the horde of the walking dead.
3. Change the weapon/item system. Chainsaws need fuel, guns can hold more ammo without taking up an extra spot, Milk/Yogurt/Eggs etc spoil after 24 hours.
4. NO MORE OTIS!!!!!
Jeramy @ Jan 10th 2007 8:52PM
got this game for christmas. immediately declared my love for it when i discovered that i could mow over zombies. brilliant. convinced a second friend to pick it up.
it sure as hell is frustrating. but i think that's a good thing. whenever i beat it i'll be so happy. haven't played it much b/c i'm waiting for a vga gender changer for my vga cable (stupid pelican and their male-end outputs). the text is readable but i don't really enjoy my face right in front of the tv all the time.
evilplushie @ Jan 11th 2007 3:32AM
I hope they fix the AI in the sequel. The damn survivors drove me nuts because they always acted like retards. ugh
Gadget @ Jan 11th 2007 4:35AM
Dead Rising totally rocks! As already stated by a few people, it's infact better than GOW in many ways. The few things that bugged me about this game are the persistance (ie. items convicts / cars / items respawn) which kinda spoils it a bit. The save system was a nightmare until I explored enough to find save points. For anyone having trouble with this game (ie. convicts / bosses), two words... 'Small Chainsaw'.
baby sea tuna @ Jan 11th 2007 9:17AM
I really hope that for the sequel you'll be able to do something more with your pictures like sharing them with friends, uploading them to a server (a la Burnout: Revenge,) or even making them your system's desktop. I know I'd shot some really sweet pix that I'd really like to exist outside of the game itself.
Also, #18, I fully agree with you. NO MORE OTIS!

Ryan @ Jan 11th 2007 12:12PM
Yeah though this thread is long dead I couldn't agree more. Otis must go. By far the biggest flaw in that game is getting chewed out by a slow talking security guard while dodging zombie lunges.
Limey @ Jan 11th 2007 6:36PM
I really hope they change the engine though... I mean, its great for the first few days/hours killing zombies... But honestly after that, the combat is SO shallow. I also hope they improve the survivor AI.
EihBeir @ Jan 12th 2007 7:46PM
You think Adam the Clown is scary to look at? You should hear the dude talk.
JonSabbath @ Jan 16th 2007 6:44PM
This is one of the most underrated games for the console, aside from viva pinata. I'm still playing even now, 5 months later and still find that chopping a few zombies apart can always be a bonus.
Im really looking forward to the sequels, especially as they look like theyll be set in cities. The virus is set to take over america, but i guess it depends on what ending from the first game they choose to use. Also, frank west is amazing. He didnt just cover wars, he IS wars.
Zach @ Mar 14th 2007 6:20AM
BuMp!
Co-Op is a MUST, better Aiming & maybe a Lock-On, & I thing a good location for DR2 or one of the sequels anyway should be Area 51. Zombies & Alians. Or how about Las Vegas with Gambling Mini-Games??? Or how about LA, NY, or Chicago??
