Even if Motorstom will "only" be displayed at 1280x720 at 30fps, the game will still look fantastic (if the demo and Japanese release are anything to go by).

Those who keep claiming that a game isn't "next gen" if it doesn't run at 1080p @ 60fps, while looking twice as good as something like Gears of War, need to stop stroking their fanboy egos.

You gotta be joking me, what have you been smoking lately?

I've played the demo on my friends PS3 it doesn't even come close to visually surpassing even GhostRecon or PGR on the 360.

This is another example of Sony shitting on it's consumer base. Promise extravagant graphics with amazing detail and next gen entertainment while just pooing on everyone with some dumb down version.

The funny thing is people actually believed Sony could deliver at E3 with these promises of amazing graphics living up to the Killzone2 trailor.

You smell that? I smell it too. It's called BULLSHIT.

The point isn't whether it looks good or not. The point is that Sony expended a lot of effort to downplay the 360's graphics capabilities and made it clear that 720p was NOT "true" HD.

And, speaking of fan boys, Strike Man--there's no way it looks "twice as good" as Gears of War.

I realize that. The "stop stroking their fanboy egos" comment was meant to apply equally to 14-year old kids from Ohio and corporate heads like Phil Harrison or Kaz Hirai. ;)

"And, speaking of fan boys, Strike Man--there's no way it looks "twice as good" as Gears of War."

I didn't mean to make it sound quite that way. I was referring to the crowd (SDF or whatever they want to call themselves) who point and laugh at whatever the 360 has to offer, with delusions that "their" system can somehow do twice as much with half its brain tied behind its back...

Both are powerful systems, but perhaps now people may begin to realize that the whole "1080p" thing was little more than a marketing bullet-point to show something that one system had and one didn't (pre-Fall update).

And for the record, since my (Sony) HDTV is a CRT, this news also means I'll be playing Motorstorm at 480p due to the whole PS3 scaler debacle...

Just so people can get this correct... when Sony says 1080p they are saying 1080p x 30fps, there is currently **no such thing** as 1080p x 60fps on the consumer level, the bandwith required is WAY too high for consumer level TVs, it's 720p/1080i x 60fps or 1080p x 30fps...

As a demanding gamer I accept nothing less than 60 fps. I am completely indifferent to the resolution a console game runs in, because once it gets over 640x480 I mostly stop caring because I sit so far form the screen I wouldn't notice the difference anyways.

FPS-related differences is something I really care about and can easily notice. It is something that makes me cringe if a game that is supposed to run smoothly suddenly halts and stutters along.

30fps is not nextgen IMHO. 60fps is, regardless of resolution.

Just for discussion's sake:

I have a 45" 1080p TV connected to a good computer. Photos are about the only thing I can truly display at that resolution, but when I change to 720p, I can see a "significant" difference. When we're sitting on the couch, my buddies and I can very easily distinguish between the two resolutions.

I can't compare progressive to interlaced with this setup, but I can at least confirm that, yes, higher resolution = prettier pictures, even on an average-sized TV at normal viewing distances.

1080p is overkill in my opinion. Though it is more than 2 times the pixels of 720p, it requires much more processing power and so it can affect the framerate. (Ex: I played COD 2 on the 360 in both 480i and 720p, and sometimes the framerate drops at 720p). 1080p is only good enough for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray.

@ samik

I buy Windows because it's the only game in town - even if they lie and only make incremental advancements in their technology, Windows is the only OS that I can use if I want to play the latest videogames. Do I like it? Not really. Do I have a choice? Yes, but it would mean giving up computer gaming.

Sony, on the otherhand, has two competitors that have done things a lot better than them. Motorstorm (along with Lair) is one of the exclusive titles that they've been touting for a long time as a system seller. After the reviews of the Japanese version, all their posturing, and now this, I feel like kicking them in the nuts. Sony is gaining a reputation of being all promise and no delivery, and when you're trying to sell a $600 console, that's not good.

So yes, the big deal is that this is more of the same shit from Sony - the big, arrogant jock of the console world. It's not really about Motorstorm; it's about Sony being unreliable assholes. Personally, I'll take any chance I can get to kick them when they're down.

I find it highly dubious that the game is capable of even hitting 30fps. I've played the demo. That thing barely got over 10fps. I know the version I played wasn't the finished version, but it wasn't that long ago from when the demo came out to when the game is being released (it's already out in Japan).

To the guy a few posts above me who said that 360 games won't get any better (visually)... that's quite possibly the dumbest thing said on the Internet so far this year. MS spent 10mn on a 6 hour game to extract the last ounce from the system (the other 360 games stand nowhere graphics wise) whereas PS3 developers are just learning to tap the PS3...they took years to get the most out of the PS2. "we're talking Gameplay" you mean the gameplay they copied from old PS2 / Sega games right? Gears - killswitch; Saints row - GTA clone, PGR - Sega's MSR.

Vynn (#16). You are completely wrong. HDMI has enough bandwidth for 1080p at 60fps, and this is exactly what the term 1080p refers to, as well as the 30fps equivalent.

Sony have already demonstrated demos running at 1920x1080x60fps, In fact Gran Turismo HD Concept demo is running in 1080p @ 60fps right now, and it looks awesome. That's not a pipe dream, that is a reality.

I wish people would stop blaming Sony for the acts of developers. The simple fact that one developer couldn't get their game to run at 1080p, or 60fps, doesn't mean the PS3 isn't capable of doing it. It just means that is a particular corner the development team is willing to cut in order to get the game to shelves.

When it comes down to decisions, I would definitely rather see 720p @ 60fps rather than 1080p @ 30fps. Framerate means a whole lot more to me than resolution. But even 720p @ 30fps can look great. Project Gotham Racing 3 runs at 30fps and that doesn't effect the experience too much for me at all. I think the motion blur really goes some way to making up for the relatively sluggish framerate.

As a rule, systems are not "maxed out" graphically within the first year of their release. The more experience the developers have with a system, the more they can get out of it. That's just common sense.

So far there have been no 360 games rendered in anything higher than 720p, and there have been no announcements about future games indicating that will change at any point.

The PS3 on the other hand, does have a small selection of games and demos already being rendered natively at 1080p.

The amount of FUD in every comment thread on Joystiq is always through the roof, on both sides of the argument.

I have to ask the Sony haters though...do you really want the PS3 to fail and for Microsoft to be the only company doing high-end gaming consoles? That's the hardware equivalent of EA buying the NFL license so no one else can make NFL Football games...

I really want the PS3 to do well enough to keep Sony in the gaming hardware business so that Microsoft has some competition and doesn't rest on its laurels. Nintendo has thrown in the towel and is instead going after the broader demographic with a sweet gimmick but not pushing the limits on the hardware.

I never understood the "We want the competition to fail" mindset. I'd love to hear the logic behind it. If there is any.

I don't care that it would give Microsoft and Nintendo a cozy "hardcore for me, casual for you" truce. The console market has room for 2.5 consoles - someone would come in to fill the gap that Sony would leave, and they would almost assuredly be a better company.

Look at Sony: exploding batteries, fake blogs, rootkits, "target renders", lik sang, and David Manning.
This is not FUD. These are news stories that have broken, and that can be freely found anywhere (on the internet and in paper) from reputable sources. These (and others) are my reasons for hating Sony and hoping that they'll fail. It's not that I want "the competition" to fail - it's that I want Sony to fail. I want them out of the industry, because it is my belief that they are doing it a disservice.

The only problem is that to output a 1080p native signal with 30-60 fps, developers have to take shortcuts - lesser textures, less effects, etc...

In many cases, an upscaled feed with more effects will look better. It still gets the benefit of reduced 'jaggies' after all, and is still created with high-def assets.

Mostly that comment was just poking fun at the "only" high-def console being unable to output their fabled 1080p, while the "lesser" console does.

Buy what system u want, play the games you want...why do so many people hate Sony, and why do they want them to fail? I will answer in one word and all of you will understand. Red E? Yankees.
Most people cannot stand a consistant dominant winner. I know, I HATE the Yankees. Sony has been sooooo successfull since the launch of the original Playstation that most people cannot stand it anymore.
So, they grasp at whatever straw they can and try to convince themselves and others that Sony sucks.
Newsflash Nuttchuggers...Sony is not going anywhere. More than likley they will "win" this Hardware war.
But, who the frack cares?
Several of the posters make a very valid point. If you are a gamer...you want all tree systems to do well. Competition boys and girls breeds better products. That is why capitalism is taking over the world. We decide what kind of quality games we will get by buying them. So, if you really want Sony to fail....here's an idea for u, do NOT buy Sony.
See bitches, it is very simple. No one is forcing you to buy this or that...it is up to you.
By the way, Sony did say numerous times that not all of the games will be in 1080p native. Especially the 1st and 2nd generation games. They did say however that "some" of the games will be in native 1080p. One example is Lair.
So, for all of u Nuttchugging fanboys of whatever company out there....go frack yourself, get some tissues, take those panties off, ask your girlfriend/mom/grandma/boyfriend for at least one of your balls back...who knows, maybe they will agree to it.

For me, I want them to fail because they lie to us. It's more than that though, it's that - even when caught - they KEEP lying to us.

As a consumer, I don't like KNOWING that the company I do business with or buy product from can't be trusted, that they've lied to me a dozen times already and show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Did you believe Harrison when he said the 480p/720p/1080i problem was easily remedied with a firmware update? Did you believe him when, just a few days later, he came out and said it might not be easily fixable, or fixable at all?

Do you believe the next thing he says? If so...how many more "whoops, what we MEANT to say.." moments is it going to take?

I had my fill of their crap this gen. I don't want them out of the industry like some crazies do, but they need to tumble out of first so they can get rid of the ludicrous arrogance that they STILL have - typified most recently by "hitting" their target of 1 million consoles shipped, when I could swear it was 4 million, then 2 million on the backtrack.

Sony needs to sit in second, or third, so they can get their game back together. The PS3 is sloppy all the way through - design, pricing, marketing, delivery.
