Hot Cooking Mama screens from the oven

Like an Easy Bake Oven for the 21st century, Cooking Mama on the DS warmed its way into gamers' hearts with Wario Ware gameplay propelled forward by the shame of disappointing dear mother. Now Mama returns in Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the Wii. All the original fun will be there including Iron Chef competition against a friend -- "ALLEZ CUISINE!" Using the Wii-mote gamers will chop, grate, slice, stir and do all the actions of cooking without actually being able to eat anything afterward. There will be 250+ foods to create 55 dishes. No word yet on an actual release date, but find screens for the game after the jump.

I can't wait to make a peanut butter and sushi sandwich!
Fred T @ Jan 11th 2007 10:46AM
Looks like they got lazy; they ported a DS game and kept the graphics. Welcome to 1995... its N64 1.5.. lol
Jackson Pritt @ Jan 11th 2007 12:23PM
@ Fred T. - Instead of ragging on games for the Wii, why don't you go play some of the amazing games for you 599 US DOLLARS?
Oh wait, it's because there aren't any!
Pete @ Jan 11th 2007 11:06AM
I'll buy it, and when my girlfriend is in town, "Look what I cooked you, Babe. And guess what! No need to clean up!"
Actually, I see her playing this while I work in the "real" kitchen..
kris @ Jan 11th 2007 10:58AM
why don't just people cook with real food?? You get a meal at the end of it and everything!!
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 11th 2007 11:00AM
So, you'd trust an 8 year old with real cooking equipment, huh? This is the same reason girls play with dolls and NOT REAL BABIES.
kris @ Jan 11th 2007 11:09AM
I was only joking, jeeeeeeez, some people are so angry on here!! i, for one, am not eight, so will probable not be buying it as i like to cook, but more importantly, i like to eat!!
And yes i do love my beloved wii before all u weirdos starting ranting about nintendo being 'da best' and all that.
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 11th 2007 11:09AM
I couldn't think of anything more boring than having a photorealistic kitchen. It's called "artistic style".
mystyk23 @ Jan 11th 2007 11:20AM
LMAO
What's next? Wii Babysitting? Wii Lawn mowing?
Anyone else think this looks like you play on the set of Blues Clues?
LMAO
Flame away "Chefs"!!
Squeek @ Jan 11th 2007 11:23AM
Looks like they added multiplayer. Pretty sweet.
Anyone saying this looks like a stupid game hasn't played the DS version.
And for the last time, graphics do not make a game. Gameplay does. I didn't hear people insulting Katamari Damacy. It's called a style fitting of the game.
That being said, while I am excited about this game, I don't see myself paying full price for it. Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Brawl, sure. Maybe $35-$40 for this.
JodyAnthony @ Jan 11th 2007 11:25AM
I will be getting this game the day it comes out. And I am a fan of real cooking, too. click my name.
Thryon @ Jan 11th 2007 11:33AM
For the record, I was seriously considering buying a Wii. But after viewing the list of games that are being released for this console, I am now holding off.
Blast me if you must, but when I see this type of game coming out for the Wii, makes me very glad I did not purchase one yet. Sorry, but what will they bring out next? Cleaning Mama? Gardening Mama? Knitting Mama?
I hope that by this fall, they have a few quality games, not targeted towards kids, or I may have to skip this generation of Nintendo console as well.
LongshotX @ Jan 11th 2007 11:34AM
Welcome to the Next GEN. NOOOOOOOOT!

I can't wait for Wii House Keeping. It's like I'm really Sweeping!
Alex B @ Jan 11th 2007 11:38AM
Thryon, I hope someday I will be able to attain your level of coolness. Until then, I'll have a blast with Warioware, Trauma Center, Zelda, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxay, Excite Truck, Cooking Mama, Elebits, etc, etc, etc.
LongshotX @ Jan 11th 2007 1:59PM
@Alex B
What is etc, etc, etc and please exclude the DS games. And please exclude the 1st party games. We know the Nintendo made games will be good but what else is there?
IslandLife @ Jan 11th 2007 12:08PM
Of all the games to be released this year, why is Joystiq showing pics of this game? No, seriously I'd like to know.
Thryon @ Jan 11th 2007 12:26PM
@Alex B
If we all liked the same style of games, then there would only be one game out there. I do recognize the fact that some people love this style of game. The most played games are still simple web based flash games...but they will not entice me to purchase them. A console is great, because it allows you to purchase the style of game you prefer, and skip the rest.
Here lies the problem, besides Wii Sports, there is nothing out there to entice ME to purchase a Wii (notice I said me, not you or anyone else). Zelda looks interesting, but not a system seller for me. I lost my faith in Mario games after Mario Sunshine. The Wii games that did excite me, Red Steel and Rampage, turned out to be less than stellar.
So here I am, sitting back, looking for a good reason to purchase the Wii, but the more I wait and look, the less I like what I see. It appears that there are more games like Cooking Mama, than there are like……RE4 (I know, it’s a GameCube game, but it happens to be the best darn GC game out there…and more like it for the Wii, will sell it for me).
Till then I’ll have a blast with Lost Planet, Gears of War, Rainbow Six, Oblivion, Call of Duty, PGR3, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, FEAR, DoA4, etc, etc, etc..…(and when I say etc, etc, etc…I really could list another 20 to 30 games….that are currently out…not games I hope will appear sometime soon).
PS/ Nintendo, to ensure my business, make me Ice Hockey Wii style…
JodyAnthony @ Jan 11th 2007 12:34PM
*plays virtual virtual skeeball*
Wow, it's like I'm really playing virtual skeeball!
spaceboy @ Jan 12th 2007 9:52AM
hey thryon,
did you notice that all you favorite games, aside from viva pinata, revolve around killing things? and up top you said youll have to "skip this generation too"...so i presume you skipped gamecube yet you "lost your faith" in mario games after super mario sunshine. how is that so if you haven't even played it? it's a fun game worthy of the mario franchise. i don't know how you know re4 is so great on gamecube either.
try playing a game that doesnt involve slaughter. maybe you need a lil sunshine in your life.
it's kinda funny. i have no problem with violent video games. but losers on joystiq are making me less attracted to them.
vidGuy @ Jan 11th 2007 1:17PM
Different strokes. I'll have to give this game a rental to see what it's like. Trauma Center looked boring to me, but my brother was interested and bought it. Now I love it!
While I agree that the Wii doesn't need a plethora of these games (which take the DS-Wii comparison at little too far, IMO), the Wii does need a large library of fun games. That's what sells systems - the PS2 had more than its share of crappy games, remember.
I'm glad I've gone the Wii60 route. This year is shaping up to be one of the best in gaming history. Yes, Thryon, you can point to a lot of decent 360 games and a few great 360 games that are out now. But remember it's more than a year since the 360 launched. A year from now, the Wii will likely have Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Disaster:Day of Crisis, Project H.A.M.M.E.R, Mario Party 8, Wii Sports 2, etc, etc, so....
Thryon @ Jan 11th 2007 1:24PM
@ spaceboy.
I did have a GameSube, with Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Resident Evil 4, and NHL 05, Zelda Collection and several more games. I did not purchase it, but traded with a friend for my Xbox, and a collection of Xbox games, once I got the 360.
Since I did not purchase the console or a single GameCube game, I did not participate in the sales of the console...so to me, I skipped it.
Well, maybe there are a lot of violent games, but when you see violent games, I see face paced action games. But you are allowed your opinion.
But look at my gamertag and you can see that I spend a great deal of time playing "non violent" games as well. I was playing Tiger Woods PGA 07 just last night, and recently played UNO, NBA 2K7, NBA Live 07, Burger King trilogy of games, Fight Night Round 3, Hexic HD, Cars, Need for Speed Carbon and of course NHL 07 and NHL 2K7 (but some people consider hockey violent). All these games I actualy own, so I must like them.
Not to mention that PGR3 and DOA4 contains no killing whatsoever.
oh, and lets not forget Geometry Wars...but I guess I do kill the little squares and circles...take that evil shapes.
note: One game that does not involve killing, but raises my homicidal tendencies is Totem Ball...
PSS/ Gamertag is Thryon..so look it up, no need to take my word for it.
brett @ Jan 11th 2007 1:24PM
Is this a f---ing joke? Open a can of soup? That's supposed to be a video game? If you're over the age of 8 and you play this, you really need to get out more.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jan 11th 2007 1:41PM
No, sir... I just don't get it. I don't get the minigame craze.
People will pay good money to fill a virtual pot with virutal water, or open a virtual can with a virtual can opener?
Where are the strategy games? You know, games that are actually worth $50.
Thryon @ Jan 11th 2007 1:32PM
@ vidGuy
I hope you are correct. I really do. I want to join the Wii60 club, but at this time, I will sit back, and wait for games that appear more interesting that cooking. Again, my preference in games...not yours.
Jackson Pritt @ Jan 11th 2007 1:46PM
Hey Thryon, how much is Microsoft paying you to comment on here? I mean, I'm a loyal Xbox fan and I think it was the best system of the last generation, but your loyalty to the 360 is borderline obsessive.
It's OK to not like the Wii's current lineup, which is "eclectic" to put it mildly, but you're acting like every game on the 360 is golden (even though a lot of them are flops), and ignoring the fact that MS has had a year more production than the Mii or PS3.
What was the lineup for the 360 like after it had been out for 2 months?
What's that you say?
The 360's early lineup was awful?
It took MS more than a year to ramp up to their current library and to finally start producing real system-selling games for the 360?
Cut the Wii -AND- the PS3 some slack and realize that OBVIOUSLY they aren't going to have the same number of games as a system that's already been out for over a year.
vidGuy @ Jan 11th 2007 1:43PM
"oh, and lets not forget Geometry Wars...but I guess I do kill the little squares and circles...take that evil shapes."
I'm sorry, that's hilarious!
The more I think about it, the more diverse the three consoles look. That's great. Thryon, I agree with you, wait until the time is right and the system's offerings are worth the price of admission.
For me, the 360 reached that point with Dead Rising, and the Wii reached that point with the pack-in Wii Sports.
Now go game and shoot something! ;)
Burnt Meatloaf @ Jan 11th 2007 1:53PM
@Thryon: You could just wait and see. It's not like the Wii is easy to get right now, anyway.
What bugs me is how many developers are just jumping into the minigame craze, and how profitable it seems to be. I'm concerned that this means deeper, more sophisticated games will be forever limited to the PC platform. That's been the case for many years, and I was really hoping that the Wii's pointer funcionality would finally bridge the gap between PC and console gaming. So far, that isn't the case at all. People are satisfied waving the thing in the air, being rewarded for good, virtual hula-hooping.
Thryon @ Jan 11th 2007 3:29PM
@ Jackson Pritt.
Did you read any of my posts?
Show me a sinlge line where I have slammed the Wii or the PS3.
Yes I am an MS fanboy, but I am a gaming fan and I will play any game as long as it appeals to me. I like fast paced, action games mostly.
That was the whole point of my post. I am looking for a good reason to purchase a Wii. I do want to play Wii Sports, but that is it. There is nothing else. I will not spend close to $400 ($279 and extra controller and tax)for one game.
I indicated waiting till there are more games of my preference (violent, demented slaughter games as other have commented) before I will purchase the Wii. I am cutting it some slack. I am giving it time to mature. You the one assuming I am bashing it. Why do you think I am reading Wii post if I was not interested in it.
All consoles have stinkers. The X360 is no different. I even mentioned Totem Ball...add to this list Superman, Saint Row (well a violent person like did not like it), and the Worst game I ever played on any console....Dead or Alive Xtreme 2.
I only listed games because Alex B insisted on mentioning these great Wii titles (some of which are not even out yet, and therefore he cannot be having to much of a blast with) and I wanted to share my current playlist. Not a bash to the console...so chill out.
PS/ by the way, I wish MS would pay me....that would rock.
idioteraser @ Jan 11th 2007 4:23PM
Red Steel isn't as bad as people claim. Heck people who are not fans of fps loved Red Steel.
Give it an hour or two and get used to the wiimote itself. Play wiiplay for a few days to get your arm and hand muscles built up along with your nervous system becoming more steady.
Rampage was a port job seriously no one was really excited about it that knew about the game.
Madden for the Wii is considered the most fun one with the multiplayer where you control your teammates legs being considered one of the best game play modes ever.
Rayman Raving Rabbids.
There are more games coming out in the next few months.
SuiLicLic @ Jan 11th 2007 2:43PM
I CANNOT wait for this came to come out! Cooking Mama is my only reason for getting SOOooo hooked on the NDS (well, brain age too)! Now that it's going to come out for Wii in March, that's my No.1 on the wish list. To all your geeky gamer boys, from a 20 something girly point of view, Cooking Mama is your excuse to get some girls! Rather than sitting at home doing hardcore gaming all day long without having any chance to meet girls…..You can't really talk about how great the graphic is of your hardcore PS3 to girls..it’s just BORING!! Girls lost interest in that graphic/RPG/CGI stuff after your 2nd sentence of PS3. But if you tell a girl that you know how to make Tempura & sushi..Hahaha...and you can show her how to cook it the Wii style! After you did a few Wii style cooking, then you can do the real cooking with a girl! I would be so turn on for a guy like that! It just adds point!
NSQ @ Jan 12th 2007 6:14PM
I find it funny that you all compare Wii with PS3 or X360, and say games like Trauma Center, Cooking Mama are subpar to Gears of War and all. I think you are all missing the point. It was clear, and Nintendo even said so, since the beginning of it all, that Wii is targeted for casual gamers and nongamers. "Minigames" like these are what this targeted audience will enjoy the most. I personally am one of these casual gamer and for me the Wii is the best system yet to ever come in the market since NES and SNES, because it actually has games that I enjoy.
Why must "video games" be connected to either epic long games or violence shooters or sports games? Why should games like these (that are actually fun to people like me) be considered only "minigames" and not a "real video game"?
CrimsonJester @ Jan 11th 2007 3:08PM
My Wife loves the cooking mama... think Wario-Ware with a cooking theme. Someone earlier made a great comparison with Katamari... who would have thought rolling a ball could be fun... well it was. Nintendo is bringing gamers in from outside the current demographic, I think many just hate to think they might start having to share the gaming time with more then just Male Gen X Gen Y.
Alex B @ Jan 11th 2007 3:59PM
@29
There were eight games in that list which I just rattled off the top of my head. That should keep me busy for a while. Those are eight titles all with unique gameplay and mechanics that I am personally interested in. They may not be the flashiest or deepest games, but I am confident they will provide me a lot of entertainment value. And by the way, that entire list of games plus the Wii costs about as much as the PS3 with one game. So I see the Wii option as a better value.
As far naming non-DS or non-first party games, I don't really don't know. I've listed eight games there that look like a lot of fun. There's Madden and Rayman and Super Monkey Ball out now, but those are my 2nd tier choices.
I'm not really sure what the point of limiting games to non-DS, non first party games is anyway. It's like saying 'Name any good 360 games that aren't shooters/sports/racing'. That's where the strength of the 360 is. First-party, quirky games are Nintendo's strength.
I don't mind if current/upcoming Wii games are or have been on the DS. I own Trauma Center for the DS and will pick it up for the Wii after I'm done with Zelda. Yes, it's pretty much the same game, but I enjoyed it on the DS and want to try it with the Wiimote.
I own a PS2 and a 360 as well, and I like them for different reasons. I like the wide variety of exclusive games on the PS2. The 360 has fantastic graphics and on-line play. The Wii, PS2, and 360 all have their respective niches that they do very well. If the Wii turns out only to have DS games or first-party games going for it, then it will still give me a lot of gaming satisfaction. If we see some 3rd party games like Resident Evil or GTA, all the better.
Bronco @ Jan 11th 2007 4:19PM
I totally agree with comment #30.
Gary @ Jan 11th 2007 5:36PM
graphics, graphics, grahics... how far can PS goes to improving the graphics? People cares too much about graphics. If you really want good graphics, stop looking at your PS3, start looking out of the window. Everything look as real as yourself. Maybe too many people realize this, thats why many of my friends want to trade their PS3 to Wii.
As for cooking mama, if you like Warioware, you will like cooking mama. I always like games that I can enjoy with both my male and female friends.
Edboy @ Jan 11th 2007 10:31PM
All of you can go on and on and complain about your face paced action games, all i see is that the lady in Cooking Mama is hot.
Probably the hottest video game character ever.
Scott @ Jan 11th 2007 6:20PM
Anyone who wants to defend this game is an absolute shit. Nintendo fanboys need to find better games to stick up for.
Shawn @ Jan 11th 2007 7:15PM
NSQ (#36) has it right on the money.
I like epic games as much as the next guy, but I just don't have time for them. I'm only 10 hours into Zelda even though I got my Wii over a month ago, because I just don't have time to spend on games when I have a full-time job, girlfriend, and other things to do.
Zegim @ Jan 11th 2007 8:27PM
I want this, now.
borgie @ Jan 12th 2007 2:13AM
Looks like there's just plenty of American nerdy male gamers who can't grasp the fact that plenty of Japanese girls and housewives play video games. This game is designed for them, not you. You need to play a killing game cus you're too chicken to sign up for Iraq? there's plenty of dumb-ass FPS on the 360 for ya. Wii is designed for everybody, not just "hardcore" gamer fanboys who's too lazy to even use a wiimote.
