This is pathetic. Kyle Orland paraphrases what Dave Karraker says, but puts his own interpretation of what DK says in QUOTES? I hope this joker gets sued for libel!

As quoted in the article above:
"...who told GamePro, basically, "Um, hey, we've sold a lot of systems." "
When you QUOTE someone's words, it better be word for word exact, or you better note it as a paraphrase.

The argument that the PS3 has just launched and you need to give it time just doesn't work. If they are coming into the market today, they need to be able to have a network that can compete today. Sure, a year from now, Sony's network will be a years worth of updates better... but so will the competition's. Do you think that Xbox Live will sit stagnant and wait for Sony to catch up? I understand that they should be very proud of getting the PS Network up and running, but they are in no position to compare what it offers to Xbox Live and believe that they will come out of it smelling like roses.

Karraker's response written in this article shows that Sony has the insane mindset that just because millions of Playstation systems and peripherals were sold in the past that they don't have to go out of their way to prove themselves anymore. If they want to break even or make profits in this generation they need to prove themselves with high quality products and reasonable prices, not outrageous claims and failure to live up to those claims.

This topic and some of the comments are lame, I havent seen this much trash since last going to the dump yard, lol.

Okay, heres my contribution, Microsoft haven't much a leg to stand on with this rather obvious comment, PSN has just come out with PS3 its not perfec, but then neither was XBL upon release, XBL is a network that has been in existance for four years, its like Xbox original, against Nintndo and Sony last year, it was bound to fail, but like 360 has proven, evrything can get better.

When 360 was collecting dust in Japan last year, everyone tried to avoid the topic at all costs, now that PS3 is having difficulties in parts of America, you come down on it like theres no tomorrow. And heres another question for ya'll, what is being offered to those of us either unwilling to pay for XBL or have online at all, next to little, Micro should concentrate on sorting its own stuff out before passing out the comments and thus the same with Sony, the only one with much space to talk is Nintendo, both Sony and Micro I can't take seriously, I mean the amount of crap I have heard from them and thier fanboys this gen is unbelievable :S

In defense of Sony (ba, I hate saying that) they have only been out for a couple months now while the 360's has had a year head start. Not really a way to compare anything.

Now compare where the 360 network was a year ago to today and see how that is. I don't have a 360 so I can't say, but that would be a more fair comparison.

Still, weak comeback Sony.

Since when does XBL have any importance in the way we play games, you could not have XBL like Wii doesnt and still have just as much fun if not more, so what if Sony's is a bit crap, the petty numbers of people playing XBL at the moment will never outnumber the numbers of people that were and still are playing thier PSOnline :S Acheivements, gamerpoints and extra pointless features or not, the more people you have to play with the better. If PS3 is giving me a free gaming network to play with mates, why the hell on Earth would I NEED anything else :S I think you 360 fanboys are being very irrartional, just because you WANT it, doesnt mean everyone else cares about it, you seem to think that because around 7m people out of the billions of people that live on this sweet Earth love and play XBL that all consoles and all people must like and play it, what if we don't want XBL?

Wii players are quite happy without XBL and I will proove that to you when it catches up to and surpasses 360 and its petty XBL that they won't shut up about along with Halo, the two best parts of the 360

Thes fucking guys at Sony keep talking about the "potential" of this system. Wake up dumbasses, potential was last year. As of November 2006, it became put up or shut up and Sony has done neither. Instead it's still the hard sell on potential (please buy blu-ray). Sony's own arrogance and it's undying need to lock people into some proprietary format, ANY proprietary format is what cost them this generation. From the Cell to Blu-Ray, to the pissing contest with Immersion, to that stupid bluetooth remote. Bluetooth? Brilliant. WTF? Where do you start? Now Motorstorm's gone from 1080P@60FPS to 720@30fps. I thought this was shaping up to be just like the trailer if not better? How so? Can't WAIT to see what you've done with Killzone. Microsoft's got it's own set of problems with the 360 mind you, but at least that console has delivered as far as promised performance goes. Bricked 360's aside. Just sounds like more damage control from Sony. Do you get the feeling that the whole "if you're selling lots of units, you don't need to discount and bundle.." thing is going to bite them in the ass come 6 or 8 months from now when the stock is piling up and new titles are out? I can see it now.... 60BG PS3 w/2 sixaxis, and a game(probably RFOM) for $599.

The fact is sony's online play is a joke. They had 5 years to get something together and this is what they bring? Its so bad, it doesnt even have a name (or deserve one). And with the poor sales of PS3, the estimated 200 billion yen in debt, I doubt they'll be throwing the money into developing anything better.

That's easily explained by two points:

1. Your memory sucks.
2. Aside from the hardware issues, the 360 was very impressive at launch. The PS3 has a swarm of problems.

And joke it may be, but does the casual gamer looking for a game to play with his mate online care about what extra features the online has, nope, so what does it matter. Sony didn't have 5 years to work on the PSN, 1 actually, if any of you have a good memory, they weren't even gonna go the XBL route, it was just gonna be left up to devs to sort out, but then they decided to sort it out at the last minute after changing thier minds, its pretty thown together, but it'll get better, who the hell except rabid 360 fans gives a flying hoot about what online has, all that stuff is about as pointless as PS3's network and bowser :S What I care about is what the games have to offer, not the bloody online module. I don't buy a bloody console just so I can play online, I buy because it has games I wish to play, if it is shit offline, I won't even bother playing it online. Whats the point?

Be aware that not everyone shares your opinion. And apparently 7 million people paying for Xbox Live Gold give a "flying hoot". And just because the "casual gamer" doesn't care, it still matters for the hardcore gamers, that's what it matters you dumbass. Gears of War is a good offline game, but the online game extends the fun and replay ability by FAR, perfect example of why online does matter. Your whole post makes it sound like PS3 can compensate for it's shitty online with good offline games. But guess what, they don't have any of those either!

As opposed to playing games offline, where you don't see your RL mates either? If anything a online game would connect you to your RL mates provided that they have an Xbox 360? Unless you are a Mario Kart/Super Smash Bros. junkie only, chances are you will be alone while playing offline, making you just as much as a nerd as when playing online?

Why are you even on a gaming blog if you think gaming is antisocial? Possibly because you are a huge nerd yourself? While the points are often used to get in online high scores, most people I know with a 360 use it to brag to each other in REAL LIFE, about who has the highest score. You don't need to be a huge nerd to like online play.

Fair say Slaziman, but hold your tongue, my point on online wasn't meant to be there to back up the PS3's online, cos I don't think much of that either and wouldn't have cared less if they had left it up to devs to sort out. And you are stating exactly what I did, there is a clash of opions here, and it seems like XBL people are forcing people to like XBL as it has more, but not everyone cares about XBL or any form of online for that matter on thier consoles, the Wii buyers certainly didn't, and if the PS3 gets the lineup of variety in games PS2 had, PS3 owners won't have reason to care either.

Online isn't the biggest thing to hit history, and not everyone needs it, what are you going to do if you do not have an online connection, sit there and play the same game you completed 20 times? Doubt it, Halo 2 got boring fast until played online, it didn't even remotly have the key excitement to keep me for one interested after completing without playing it online. Except to play it on legendary, great...

Gears of war was completed in 2 days, what next for a gamer without online, play it again or trade it in, might as well trade it in. Don't make it sound like XBL is everything, cos its not, its just another feature, if Micro focuses all thier attention on gaming online, anyone without online might as well go buy a Wii instead as 360 is worthless to them.

My argument is aimed at the nerds who have X or square shaped eyes, use chatrooms and play online all day in an attempt to beat thier mates for the highest nerd score. Anyone of you XBL gamers up for a game of online chess, I know you'll beat me at it, but hey, I'm not gaming or all day :)

I agree, a fairly weak comeback. There are so many good things he could have said like:

1) We're selling more PS2s in the US each month than Xbox360, STILL.

2) We've already sold twice as many PS3s as 360s in Japan, in 2 months.

3) We can drop the price of PS3 in the future, but you can't put HDDVD or HDMI in a v2 box without completely alienating your customers. And you can't ever ship a game that won't fit on a DVD or that requires a hard drive.

Don't get me wrong, I like my 360. But I won't ever be playing MGS or FF or GT on it either, and those games matter a LOT to a LOT of people.

Pulse, you underestimate the nerds. While for us normal gamers XBL is a great addition, but not the main selling point of a console, for the nerds it's a deal maker, which eventually means more console sales, bigger installed base, more appealing platform for developers, more games for us. Yes, the nerds are countless, but as long as we benefit from them, I welcome them. The opposite is true for Sony, who seems to be focusing on the hardcore videophiles with it's "1080p/120 fps in four dimensions" bullshit, but can't deliver that, or good online play, which means smaller installed base, less appealing to developers, less games. That's why everybody is buying a Wii, me included, outside of the Internet lots of people don't even know about resolutions and frame rates, nor do people care too much about online games. The points that you make are as valid for the whole resolution/next gen movies shit. And since those two things are the PS3's selling points (zOMG 1080p true hd and BLU-RAY!!!), I'd rather be safe with Wii60.

At the end of the day, PS3 online is rather messy, but can be improoved if Sony makes the effort -_- within even the next few months, all they need is a bit of originality and creativity with a new update, and make it easy to use. So far the only thing I would like from XBL is acheivements, I'm not interested in anything else talking online wise, altenratively I wouldn't use online at all except to download stuff from the PS Store, I don't care about switching games to play with mates, or headphones or all that junk, I don't even have the time to get all that stuff, how some of you lot manage it is beyond me, you must have a lot of free time.

As for Gamerscore, it would be about as useful to me as dog food is to my cat. I don't have the cash to by loads of games, I can just about afford a PS3 and Wii with a couple of games I hope to last me for a while. I buy on average 2-3 games a year and no more, so I am a representation of one of those people who does not need all of this, I don't have the time to complete games on all the hardest settings to get extra points etc, and I don't have mates that sit and brag about thier Gamerscore, my mates wouldn't be found dead talking about that :S So its just a matter of opinion and what suits you best, what may be ideal for Xbox gamers wouldn't be ideal for me. Saying that, thats not the reason I have no interest in Xbox, it simply just doesn't have the games I like, thats all, no offence to it or anything :)

France is my Wii fanboy brother leeching onto my ip with his bloody PSP, hes gone to play it now, thank god for that cos hes pissing me off. Saying that, Wii's online isn't bad at all, but nobody needs make use of it because of its gameplay quality, also Micro dares not comment on Wii's online anywho, they want to be business allies with Nintendo, its obvious, and kinda funny. Although, they have at times passed down sly remarks comparing Wii to a party toy, which it is not, even if Wii's online was awful, Micro wouldn't mention it.

I've never been a safe person, call me a mad person, but I'm not safe, yeah, I may may loose something by geeting a PS3, but I'm willing to take that chance, it's only the games I like on it I want. Nothing else, Sony's rant about graphics means little or nothing to me either, and bluray, infact, although I understand why Blu-ray is attached to PS3, it also annoys me they built it into the system causing all this mess. Had PS3 been out a year ago it would have had a stronger fanbase and line up of games, I can only sigh.

I liked the games I had on PS2, FF, God of war, MGS, Tekken, GTA, GT, Unreal, Devil May Cry, Zone of the Enders and quite a few others, those are the games I enjoy, thus the reason I want a PS3 as first priority. Not because I'm some loyal Sony fanboy who will defend the PS3 to the end, otherwise I wouldn't have my own comments on the way Sony is performing and buying a Wii soon after I gain a PS3, but most of the games I play are games I can enjoy offline or with mates after a long day.

I have little time or care for online, but if they are throwing in a cheap online module, I'll play it when I have the time, all this talk about XBL means nothing to me really as I live quite a hectic life and would have little time to play a XBL replica on PS3. I am from Europe England, and I have no problems waiting as I am not missing out on anything. Although you may think I am because you have the games YOU enjoy. Even if PS3 was out, I'd still be waiting anyhow for the likes of MGS4, Tekken 6 and God of war 3 so it would make little difference, and I still don't plan on getting a PS3 until next X-mas anyway, until then I am quite happy to stick with my PS2 or play my brother's Wii :)

Oops, the comment verification took so long you posted something else. I'd like to warn you that the PS2 had good games because it was a economical success, and had a large install base. If the PS3 isn't that, you won't be seeing the sequels to your favorite games (most of them anyway) on the PS3, or at least not exclusively. Unless you really care about MGS4 and FFXII to blow 600 euros (oh wait you use pounds, but it's probably even more expensive), I don't recommend you to purchase the PS3, certainly not with the Rumorang of MGS4 going to the Xbox 360, then again if you are one of those rich types, for whom 200 euros (whatever it's in pounds) is not a big deal, then the PS3 would be a more attractive purchase (difference in price between PS3 and Xbox 360). Also, just in case you didn't know, GTA4 is gonna be on Xbox 360.

NES, SNES, rely on brand loyalty and make the N64.
PS1, PS2, rely on brand loyalty and make the PS3.

So, I guess you better tread lightly Microsoft.

Seriously, the whole "having to switch between multiple discs" argument is just pathetic. How many of you can honestly say that you've heard someone complain when they had to put in disc 2, 3, or 4 of any FF after VII??? Have you ever heard anything from anyone complaining about switching a disc ever??? I'm sure there are going to be a ton of you out there that say so, just like the million or so of you that own "all three systems, but love the ps3 the most". Grow up. Your attempts to validate yourself and viewpoint are weak, at best. You're resorting to a fourth grade argument for a grown up world.

And you know, when it all comes down to it, they're fucking video game systems, people.

And again, if there are so many of you here accusing Joystiq of bias and the like, consider two things(both of which have been repeated ad nauseum): 1. This is a blog, you idiots. They have absolutely no need to be un-biased. So deal.
2. How can you claim bias when they're not even the one's doing the original reporting??? They're just recycling, for the most part, posts from other "news sites". So how can you accuse Joystiq of being the biased one?

I took it out of the box to find no high definition cables are included... I say to myself ok, thats a pretty big downside but I have it, I might as well use it. So I hook it up to my 1080p TV running in 480i because Sony wants me to buy a $50 cable. I get the machine that is 20% bigger than the original xbox setup finally and I turn it on... ooooh how awesome it turns on, great job sony on the touch sensitive on/off and cd eject buttons, my joy didn't last long, the menu looks like a cheap rushed slightly updated version of the playstation 2 dash, alright but the dashboard isn't everything right? I decide to head on over to their store, after 10 minutes of inputting my personal information on one of the most unintuitive interfaces I have ever seen i'm ready to download a demo... I work my way around the windows 3.1 looking store to find 4 available demos, after waiting 2 1/2 hours to download 800mb makes me wonder why I spent so much for my 12mb download 1mb upload speed (so much for a free service), once downloaded the damn thing starts to install (WTF?) I get to playing, I pick up the cheap thin plastic rip off of the dual shock and use the tilt motion, after using the wii I would prefer not to talk about the tilt feature... I had enough of this thing, I go to set the console back to original defaults finding it asking me if I want to do a quick format or a full format? Is this a joke? An amber harddrive LED, a mouse icon, scroll bars with Ok and Cancel, and now asking me if I want to forat my harddrive? I will just stick with my $2,000 custom PC when I want to game on a PC, I'll stick to my 360 when I want to game on a console

Playstation 3 = dreamcast minus rumble

Fahmi, shut up unless you have proof or something worth replying to fanboy.

Slaziman, I am buying because my PS2 is reaching its near death, its sometimes plays up on me, I would rather just save up and buy the PS3 so that I can continue playing my PS2 games and play my PS3 games then pay another 50 pounds to get another PS2 which will last me a couple of months before I want PS3, just a bit pointless if you see what I mean. And no its not just for FF, although I am a massive fan of the FF series despite the slight drop in quality from FF games story plots as of late, I also have a whole list of game I enjoy which are coming out on the PS3 at some point. I dunno what to expect from Killzone 2, but I'll try it out anyway, bought the last one, wasn't awesome, but had a plot I liked, and gameplay wasn't bad at all although quite limited.

I would also like to try out the Wiimote rehash, lol, I say that cos no matter what Sony calls it, it will always have that name, saying that, it looks quite cool and I can visualise how with creativity of devs it could be used quite well in gaming, so I want to try it for myself. I have a PSP, so the incorperation of PSP and PS3 will be superb for me, I have a lot of music that is overloading my PC, so putting it onto the PS3 should be great, especially having 60gig which makes my PC's measly 20 gig look like crap, have never been much arsed to buy a larger harddrive, I will do so when Vista arrives.

Speaking of Vista, it will make up for the 360 I'm not buying. And seeing as the likes of Gears or war, Oblivion and major selling titles on 360 are porting to PC, thats great news to the likes of me if I had an interest in playing them.

Although not an online gamer, if Sony has a shop, I won't mind using it once in a while to buy some stuff for my PS3. Thats about all I'll need online for to be honest :)

I know a few people with 360's so if a game does pop up I like, I'll buy the game and play it on thiers, I have the sorta mates that don't mind sharing thier stuff, we just borrow when we feel like it, and give back. So I have no real reason to buy a 360, unless I just felt the need to spend cash on something I won't particually use.

Joystiq, that goes without mentioning that the GTHD demo crashed the network.

I'm surprised that was left out.

^^ Don't worry, like I said, I'm in no hurry to buy a PS3 now, or any console for that matter, right now my focus is on my Uni studies, I'm trying to get my business degree so have little time for gaming anyway.

But I have already heard about a few of my faves coming PS3 direction, FF13 is confirmed and looks pretty cool thus far, the worlds will be massive, basing my opinion on what Blue Dragon gave us. ZOE3 has been announced already, so I expect to see that, Konami has confirmed they have no intentions to port "as of yet", but if it does, and I have the other games I want, that won't bother me too much, I know GTA4 will be on 360, but both will have thier own exclusive content, so the games may be quite different once people start downloading thier extras. I will try out the 360s version as well at some point.

The PS3 is 450 pounds here for the 20gig and 550 for 60 gig, but compared to a new laptop for my uni studies costing 2000, the PS3 price is kinda measly, lol, I wish I could import from America.

I'm not rich, I have never gotten pocket money like some spoilt kids out there, I just work hard for my cash so when I have so extra cash to spend, instead of blowing it all on drinks or something pointless like more clothes, I treat myself to something. And I certainly don't wanna have what every guy around the block has (just a figure of speech) so I tend to buy something different, by me having a PS3, I can go to my mates and play the 360 when I wish, play my bros Wii when I wish and have my own PS3 so they can come by and play it :)

67. KevMa:
"In defense of Sony (ba, I hate saying that) they have only been out for a couple months now while the 360's has had a year head start. Not really a way to compare anything.

Now compare where the 360 network was a year ago to today and see how that is. I don't have a 360 so I can't say, but that would be a more fair comparison."

why stop there? why not compare the current PS3 network to what the original Xbox had when it launched? they didn't even have a network then! damn, the PS3 is totally kicking the ass of the Xbox from 5 years ago! I bet if we give them a few more years, they might be able to even surpass what Xbox Live was doing 6 months ago!

When I read the headline for this post, I thought, Wow, maybe Joystiq does have an anti-Sony bias after all.

Then I read the post, and realized that Sony's rebuttal really was bad enough to warrant the headline. Comment #1 summed the situation up pretty well, I think.

Sony says you can browse for free. Certain content from Sony or third parties, maybe not. Are they going to be generous? Some. But more than likely, they're going to pull you in.

I hope the PS3 eventually becomes competitive with the Xbox 360, so that in 2009 Microsoft has a REASON to release the Xbox 720, a $400 box featuring quad-core 5Ghz processor, HD-DVD/Bluray movie playback, 75GB games, HDMI, 2GB memory, 300GB harddrive, and motion controls. There is no stopping the glorious behemeth that is Microsoft!!! And the world is better off for it! Huzzah!
