Good times were had by all in December. Gamers got a lot of new games, the industry grew, and manufacturers made a ton of money. And even though Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo publically battle it out for more market pie, we saw them together at a party last night giggling like school girls while smoking $100 dollar bills to no end. The lavishness was absurd.More interesting, however, is how each console maker postitively spun the good news in their favor. Nothing wrong with tooting your horn (that's what companies do), it's just amusing to see the contrast. Here are some choice snippets from each press release:
- Sony - "Sony Computer Entertainment America dominated the US computer entertainment marketplace in December ... On the hardware front, the more than six-year old PlayStation 2 outpaced all other home systems at retail during December, including newer, readily-available products from our competition. Sales of PS2 systems were down a mere 5% from December 2005, demonstrating the continued viability of the PS2 technology."
- Microsoft - "Xbox 360 Outsells Wii and PS3 This Holiday. Consumers have cast their votes and Xbox 360 was the best-selling next-generation console of the 2006 holiday season in the United States, outselling the PlayStation 3 and Wii combined in December and outselling all next-generation consoles in November and December. The Xbox 360 garnered a 51% market share in the United States for December 2006."
- Nintendo - "NINTENDO RECORDS BEST HOLIDAY SELLING SEASON IN U.S. VIDEO GAME HISTORY [They are actually shouting this!]. There has never been anything like it. Independent U.S. sales figures released by the NPD Group today confirmed a red-hot launch for the new Wii system by Nintendo, and the crowning of the portable Nintendo DS as the best-selling video game device of any type for both the holidays and all of 2006."
