Gamestop and EB Games is offering $100 off the purchase of a PS3 by handing over your PS2. The PS3 does play PS2 games, albeit a little jagged, so getting $100 off for trading it in could be construed as a good deal -- especially if you're part of the PS2 sporadic "disc read error" crew. This advertisement and deal is one the first true signs that retailers have stock and want those systems out the door.
We now wait to see if any other retailers begin offering deals to move PS3s. Stores aren't making very much money off of the systems, so moving those puppies out is top priority. The real profit exists in getting customers to buy games and accessories.
So, while the retailer gets rid of their stacks of immovable PS3 consoles with this deal, they also get your old friend who certainly will sell. This deal means Gamestop gets your $400 - $500 from the PS3 purchase, plus whatever accessories and games go with the sale, and then they will sell the traded-in PS2 for another $100 to someone not ready to upgrade. Ding, they break even or profit, and everyone walks away happy.

One of the PS3's 2 great strengths (aside from the CELL) is the PS brand name, they should do this, and attempt to make sure that that 100million people all buy a PS3, and they net this generation with no competition
(not that i want this to happen, and yes, it would cause them to lose shitloads of many)

Before this article gets swamped by fans of 360 (that couldnt play most of the pathetically small XBOX games library on its launch):
Some of the PS2 games do not work with the PS3. The main series affected - FF and MGS2 apparently. About 200 games in all, so check before you buy, as this is expected to be fixed soon (same thing happened with the PS2 as well), if you love FF might wait. Also, seems like only some TVs affected.
Of course, because Sony spent money on a PS2 chip, the games do work, majority of them perfectly, and the PS library is still far better than the XBOX one.

PS3 is next-gen: believe it.

How about they kick me in the balls and rape my sister in front of me while they're at it?

I haven't heard incentives like $100 off launch consoles only 2 months after launch ever... retailers must really have a ton of ps3's they can't sell ...

No Deal, and I despise that show. And to think I actually used to give Howie Mandell the benefit of the doubt. No Deal, Howie!

"stacks of immovable PS3 consoles"? Yeah, that's because Sony has been doing a better job of meeting customer demand than M$ or Nintendo."
Last I checked Sony has been doing a shit job of meeting consumer demand, dumbass. Don't you know that the PS3, which only has around 500,000 units in the US, still hasn't sold out, yet the Wii, which has over 1,000,000 units in the US has already moved just about all of its units?
You're one dumbass fanboy, man.

Too bad the consumer demand sucks.

"So I'll be out 500 bucks and my PS2 games will look like crap? How about they kick me in the balls and rape my sister in front of me while they're at it?"
You will be out 399, not 500, and most of your PS games will look ok, all of them will work, unlike 360.
Also, this is the usual level of 360 fans - the kind of people who only like to play violent shooters and cant appreciate better things in life (MGS, FF, Ico, Okami, etc etc). Note - you get good shooters AS WELL on the PS3 - resistance + GRAW2, R6 and killzone 2 on the way!
""stacks of immovable PS3 consoles" - was that because the 360 is already giving off discounted bundles to drive sales? Even with 100 dollar lower price, a one-year head start in games versus the PS3, the 360 still needed discounts? Hmmmm…..

2. EB's trade in deals are complete rip-offs. You could probably get $150 for the same PS2 bundle on eBay.

"The PS3 is having difficulty because, in a word, it sucks. It's more than a day late and a dollar short."
'nuff said.

You mean ... games that I can get on my PS2 but not my PS3? Because correct me if I'm wrong, but PS3 doesn't have Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid, and the other two games you listed don't have sequels announced ... (Ico had Shadow of the Colossus, but that doesn't have a sequel).

What this is an excuse for PS3's sitting on shelves? Congratulations, you're an idiot. 10.4 million units SOLD vs 1 million SHIPPED and they STILL can't sell out. Have a seat retard.

As for $100 trade-in on the PS2 -- with cables, a 2nd controller AND a Memory Card (how are you supposed to transfer your saves to the new PS3!?), total rip. They'll sell your system with one conroller for $129, and gain a few extra $ on the 2nd controller and memory card. The PS2 still has a ton of great games coming out, and aside from Resistance ... well, there doesn't seem to be much reason to upgrade. Blu-Ray is nice IN THEORY, but how many of us have a 50" TV where it'll really matter?
Another few killer games come down the pipeline, maybe. As it is, you could probably sell your PS2 with accessories on eBay for more.

And do some basic math next time you post.
600 - 100 == 500. Not 400. If I were willing to plunk down that kind of cash, why would I want a gimped PS3?

But hey, anything to make it cost less is good in my eyes.

#33: you do know that it's 10.4m SHIPPED right? lolol

Xbox 360: $400
HD-DVD player: $200
Xbox Live subscription: $60
Total: $660
PS3: $500
With rebate: $400
Hmmmm ... looks like that extra $100 is just icing on the cake - won't be long before the 3Suxty is laying in a shallow grave.

It is $600.
And grunge you're a retard. Go play in traffic.

Sorry, xbot. The PS3's lower-priced version isn't gimped like the core 360 is. Unlike the Core 360, the PS3 can play all online games, has a wireless controller, and HDMI output.
I know its hard to wrap your mind around how much MIcrosoft screwed you over.

360 may be $400 still (not a small amount of money, imo) but at this point its an infinitely greater value simply because it has games people actually want to play.
Resistence may be a great game, but why bother when everyone and their brother pretty much agrees Gears is better?

"and HDMI output."
And no HDMI cable?

I love this $400 PS3 crap people keep spewing. Everybody knows that both Sony and Microsoft have a gimped down version nobody wants. Nobody. If you want to play a GAME it's $460 vs. $660 vs. $250.
And $100 off in LESS THAN 2 MONTHS is a sign of desperation.

- No, dipshit, let's review this...
"Xbox 360: $400
HD-DVD player: $200"
- OKAY! Hold it! Stop right there! What is it with you Fanboy Fucktards that keep comparing the PS3 with the 360 AND the HD-DVD drive?! NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO GET ONE, NOR WANTS ONE. People don't want to pay $600 on a 360 and HD-DVD add-on almost as much as they don't want to pay $600 for a PS3.
"Xbox Live subscription: $60"
- $50. One year is $50. Get your facts straight before you decide to take a shit and call it an argument.
"Total: $660"
- ERRT! Total: $450, if you don't want the HD-DVD add-on. I mean, why would you? There's Movie downloads on Xbox Live Marketplace. Sure, they're rentals, but no one really buys movies anymore. It's all about Netflix and such now days.
"PS3: $500"
- I like how you compare the Top end model of the 360 with the low end PS3. No. Don't try to twist the facts in your favor, that's called Bullshitting. And you don't seem to be very good at it.
PS3 Premium (compared with the 360's premium): $600... OH! I'm sorry, that's not correct, is it? I should have said "FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS"!
"With rebate: $400"
- And the lost of a PS2. But, wasn't there also a rebate with the 360 from EB/GS for $80 for the trade in of a Xbox 1? If that's the case, then why not be fair?
Top-end PS3 w/ $100 rebate: $499
Top-end 360 w/ 1-year XBL and $80 rebate: $370
Top-end 360 w/ 1-year XBL and NO rebate: $450.
Well, well, well. Would you look at that. The 360 is still cheaper then the PS3 w/ rebate when you factor in the (optional) Xbox Live Gold and no rebate.
Hhm... Looks like you're either
a) A stupid, fact-spinning fanboy; or
b) Just stupid.
To make a SOMEWHAT more legitimate argument, you could've said that the PS3 was the same price as the 360 with 4 years (how long the Xbox's 1 lifespan was) of Xbox Live for it's lifespan (assuming it does the same as the original Xbox). Which it is.
PS3: $599.
Xbox 360 + "Lifetime" Live: $600.
(I gave the PS3 that $1 advantage. You can thank me later...)
So, I guess when you look at it that way it would all come down to the games. Huh... Comes down to the games?! Who'da thunk that?
"Hmmmm ... looks like that extra $100 is just icing on the cake - won't be long before the 3Suxty is laying in a shallow grave."
- Mmm. A High-end PS3 for $100 cheaper! Geez! If you're going to go into a price war about the PS3, why not compare it with the Wii also? Last time I checked, that was kicking the PS3's ass too.
Now, before you call me a fanboy for the 360 or Wii or Wii60. Stop. I am a fan of both. And I could of been a fan of the PS3 too, just like I was with the PS2 and PS1 if it wasn't for those fine folks at Sony expecting me to shell out $599 for a console and insult me with there lies AND marketing campaigns (All I want for Xmas is a PSP? Wickity wak son, rite?!1) all a the same time!
