Deal or no deal: $100 off PS3 by giving up PS2

Gamestop and EB Games is offering $100 off the purchase of a PS3 by handing over your PS2. The PS3 does play PS2 games, albeit a little jagged, so getting $100 off for trading it in could be construed as a good deal -- especially if you're part of the PS2 sporadic "disc read error" crew. This advertisement and deal is one the first true signs that retailers have stock and want those systems out the door.
We now wait to see if any other retailers begin offering deals to move PS3s. Stores aren't making very much money off of the systems, so moving those puppies out is top priority. The real profit exists in getting customers to buy games and accessories.
So, while the retailer gets rid of their stacks of immovable PS3 consoles with this deal, they also get your old friend who certainly will sell. This deal means Gamestop gets your $400 - $500 from the PS3 purchase, plus whatever accessories and games go with the sale, and then they will sell the traded-in PS2 for another $100 to someone not ready to upgrade. Ding, they break even or profit, and everyone walks away happy.

Everyone until the person notices that ps2 games on the ps3 look like ass.

If they lower the 60G-price to $500, I'm all in. :)

What about trading in a PS2 towards a Wii???
haha @ Jan 13th 2007 2:58PM
I don't know what's funnier. The fact that the PoS3 is already dead, or the fact that some morons already spent 600 bucks on it!
KingBroly @ Jan 13th 2007 3:03PM
I don't think I've ever seen anything like this, THIS EARLY in a console's lifespan. Where's lik-sang when you need them? Oh wait...
Mr. Khan @ Jan 13th 2007 3:05PM
Sony themselves should make this offer
One of the PS3's 2 great strengths (aside from the CELL) is the PS brand name, they should do this, and attempt to make sure that that 100million people all buy a PS3, and they net this generation with no competition
(not that i want this to happen, and yes, it would cause them to lose shitloads of many)
aegies @ Jan 13th 2007 3:07PM
Actually, as far as guitar hero goes, Nyko did announce their own accessory to use ps2 peripherals on the ps3, and it does support the red octane guitars. There's no release date yet. As it stands, this promo goes until the middle of February, so now we all get to play a waiting game to see if they'll tell us when we'll see it. Or trade in the Guitar Heroes w/guitars and hope they announce the 80's edition songs as downloads over Xbox Live.

Let's see...You could always trade in your old console and games toward a new console. People complain its too expensive, they give you a way to reduce the cost and you still complain. If you don't like the console fine, but don't you have anything better to do than to monitor news about the console you hate so much?
Werbal @ Jan 13th 2007 3:10PM
Still a bad deal.
samik @ Jan 13th 2007 3:16PM
Awesome deal - if you are not interested in blu-ray then go for the 499USD one, as good and same price as the USD399 xbox360, and the blu-ray is free, and you can still play the massive PS2 library!
Before this article gets swamped by fans of 360 (that couldnt play most of the pathetically small XBOX games library on its launch):
Some of the PS2 games do not work with the PS3. The main series affected - FF and MGS2 apparently. About 200 games in all, so check before you buy, as this is expected to be fixed soon (same thing happened with the PS2 as well), if you love FF might wait. Also, seems like only some TVs affected.
Of course, because Sony spent money on a PS2 chip, the games do work, majority of them perfectly, and the PS library is still far better than the XBOX one.
Thrawn @ Jan 13th 2007 3:16PM
Why should I do that? So I'll be out 500 bucks and my PS2 games will look like crap?
How about they kick me in the balls and rape my sister in front of me while they're at it?
Grunge @ Jan 13th 2007 3:16PM
This article has an obvious anti-Sony bias, but I guess this is the sort of crap that we've come to expect from Joystiq. "stacks of immovable PS3 consoles"? Yeah, that's because Sony has been doing a better job of meeting customer demand than M$ or Nintendo. Just because you can't afford one doesn't mean that it's too expensive - it just means that you need to get a job and save some money instead of spending it on Cheetos and Gamecube 1.5
PS3 is next-gen: believe it.
JFink @ Jan 13th 2007 3:17PM
Umm.. has anyone looked at the fine print. It looks like you have to trade in the PS2, the cables, 2 controlers AND a memory card. For a $100 discount, that's a crappy deal.
Padriac @ Jan 13th 2007 3:18PM
EB stores (in Los Angeles at least) has been doing a similar deal with the Xbox/Xbox 360 for a while now. So, using the logic I'm reading in the comments here, obviously the Xbox 360 is doomed as well.
tack @ Jan 13th 2007 3:18PM
Will they give you $100 towards the purchase of a 360? Then it might have some appeal.
samik @ Jan 13th 2007 3:30PM
Correction: "Some of the PS2 games do not work with the PS3" The games do work, but the graphics dont look as good. And of course, it will be six months before the quality of PS3 games overtakes the 360 - but then, who will give a discount becuase the PS3 will be worth the extra USD100 then (note 100, not 200 as some Fatbox fans will say, becuase the comparable of the USD399 360 is the USD499 PS3)
Nathan M @ Jan 13th 2007 7:33PM
"Just because you can't afford one doesn't mean that it's too expensive - it just means that you need to get a job and save some money instead of spending it on Cheetos and Gamecube 1.5" Right, because anyone with a job can afford to blow 500-600$ on a system any time they fee like it. /sarcasm :D
Pointing_and_Laughing @ Jan 13th 2007 3:33PM
Didn't Sony say on Thursday that "if your system is doing well, then you shouldn't need to discount and bundle to sell units." about Microsoft bundles?
Oh the irony!!
Kompressor @ Jan 13th 2007 3:34PM
still a bad deal... you still end up with a playstation 3 :(
I haven't heard incentives like $100 off launch consoles only 2 months after launch ever... retailers must really have a ton of ps3's they can't sell ...

Grunge, are you stupid or something?
"stacks of immovable PS3 consoles"? Yeah, that's because Sony has been doing a better job of meeting customer demand than M$ or Nintendo."
Last I checked Sony has been doing a shit job of meeting consumer demand, dumbass. Don't you know that the PS3, which only has around 500,000 units in the US, still hasn't sold out, yet the Wii, which has over 1,000,000 units in the US has already moved just about all of its units?
You're one dumbass fanboy, man.
resistance: fall of 360 @ Jan 13th 2007 3:38PM
We have the usual polite 360 talk:
"So I'll be out 500 bucks and my PS2 games will look like crap? How about they kick me in the balls and rape my sister in front of me while they're at it?"
You will be out 399, not 500, and most of your PS games will look ok, all of them will work, unlike 360.
Also, this is the usual level of 360 fans - the kind of people who only like to play violent shooters and cant appreciate better things in life (MGS, FF, Ico, Okami, etc etc). Note - you get good shooters AS WELL on the PS3 - resistance + GRAW2, R6 and killzone 2 on the way!
""stacks of immovable PS3 consoles" - was that because the 360 is already giving off discounted bundles to drive sales? Even with 100 dollar lower price, a one-year head start in games versus the PS3, the 360 still needed discounts? Hmmmm…..
Huzzah!! @ Jan 13th 2007 3:40PM
1. Really old news
2. EB's trade in deals are complete rip-offs. You could probably get $150 for the same PS2 bundle on eBay.

"the kind of people who only like to play violent shooters and cant appreciate better things in life (MGS, FF, Ico, Okami, etc etc)"
You mean ... games that I can get on my PS2 but not my PS3? Because correct me if I'm wrong, but PS3 doesn't have Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid, and the other two games you listed don't have sequels announced ... (Ico had Shadow of the Colossus, but that doesn't have a sequel).
Pointing_and_Laughing @ Jan 13th 2007 3:45PM

What this is an excuse for PS3's sitting on shelves? Congratulations, you're an idiot. 10.4 million units SOLD vs 1 million SHIPPED and they STILL can't sell out. Have a seat retard.
sweethavok @ Jan 13th 2007 3:47PM
lol! The 360 didnt need this type of help when it launched in my opinion it just goes to show that Sony is in some serious trouble. I, like many of you have seen many PS3 just sitting on shelves and not moving. This was certainly not the case with the 360, which didn't become widely available till March-April.
kyle @ Jan 13th 2007 3:48PM
well system bias aside, it's not really worth trading off a system 2 controllers and mem card for a hundred bucks. give it to your little brother so he leaves you alone when u do get a ps3
Kylearan @ Jan 13th 2007 3:49PM
EBGames/Gamestop gave $80 for an XBox towards a 360 a few months ago. If you still had an XBox, it was a pretty good -- the console was pretty dead anyway.
As for $100 trade-in on the PS2 -- with cables, a 2nd controller AND a Memory Card (how are you supposed to transfer your saves to the new PS3!?), total rip. They'll sell your system with one conroller for $129, and gain a few extra $ on the 2nd controller and memory card. The PS2 still has a ton of great games coming out, and aside from Resistance ... well, there doesn't seem to be much reason to upgrade. Blu-Ray is nice IN THEORY, but how many of us have a 50" TV where it'll really matter?
Another few killer games come down the pipeline, maybe. As it is, you could probably sell your PS2 with accessories on eBay for more.
waruwaru @ Jan 13th 2007 3:49PM
This only seems like a good deal because my Fat gen 1 PS2's drive is failing intermitently. The number of items you have to trae in to qualify sucks though.
Thrawn @ Jan 13th 2007 3:51PM
27: Upon further thought, you might want to take a good look in the mirror, ya blind intolerant fanboy. I own pretty much all of the "good things in life" that you mentioned on the PS2. In fact I'm actually a retro gamer at the core.
And do some basic math next time you post.
600 - 100 == 500. Not 400. If I were willing to plunk down that kind of cash, why would I want a gimped PS3?
SickNic @ Jan 13th 2007 4:05PM
Touché salesman. That's not a bad deal at all...
nabisco @ Jan 13th 2007 4:08PM
What's with all the whining, this is a good deal if you want a ps3(which apparantly is a minority by a large margin). If you ask me this is better for EB and GameStop so they can finally move those ps3 units off the shelves.
But hey, anything to make it cost less is good in my eyes.
RYAN @ Jan 13th 2007 5:29PM
The creater and developer of ICO and Shadow of Colossus; Fumito Ueda has announced development on a third title coming for ps3.
all 3 next gen consoles are great, they all have very seperate abilities. playstation has always managed to produce an extensive library of variety for it's consoles and they will still do so. xbox will continue to have great online first person shooters, and nintendo will always have the best/most fun first party titles.
and if you hate the ps3, why complain? if it doesn't sell that should be good news to you. especially if you like being limited to games.
cruceh @ Jan 13th 2007 4:24PM

Sorry, xbot. The PS3's lower-priced version isn't gimped like the core 360 is. Unlike the Core 360, the PS3 can play all online games, has a wireless controller, and HDMI output.
I know its hard to wrap your mind around how much MIcrosoft screwed you over.

For the love of god PLEASE stop saying the PS3 is $500
It is $600.
And grunge you're a retard. Go play in traffic.
Werbal @ Jan 13th 2007 4:57PM
Grunge, nobody wants the 20 gig PS3 (even less than they want the 60 gig, even). Not to mention the HD-DVD drive on the 360 is totally optional, for those of who are still perfectly happy with DVDs (which is most of us).
360 may be $400 still (not a small amount of money, imo) but at this point its an infinitely greater value simply because it has games people actually want to play.
Resistence may be a great game, but why bother when everyone and their brother pretty much agrees Gears is better?
