I wanna play at one of GoonieGooGoo's house (NO SARCASM). I bet he gotz the killa gaming rig!

And like he said, if money IS no objection, and you can buy anything you want whenever the mood strikes, there's alot to be said for Sony not setting the mood, methinks.

I think some people seem to forget that Gamestop(I work there) had a similar promotion when XBOX 360 first came out too and had it last week too. Trade in a xbox get 80 off a 360(over the holiday you also got free GRAW with insurance) and the fact is they want used ps2s bc they sell more then xbox 1s and you all probably know how gamestop buys your games for like 3 dollars and sells them back for 29.99. So all this craziness is really about making gamestop more rich

As much as I'd love to jump on the Bash-SOny bandwagon, I don't see this as a sign of desperation on the retailers part.
From their point of view, that second hand PS2 is worth $150 to $200 (Not sure what the going rate is in the states, but it's about £80 here in the UK) so they're really selling the PS3s for $650 and $750. This is a much more attractive proposition for them as it allows them to make a real profit on just the hardware.
You'll remember that one of the chains (can't remember which) seemed to run a test program in Hawaii where they required a trade in to buy (preorder?) a PS3 at launch.

"PS3 is a toy for gangsta wannabes and guys who are fooled by Sony's lame viral marketing.

I could sell my used 360 on eBay for as much as people are getting for PS3s at this point. NOBODY WANTS ONE BECAUSE THEY SUCK.

Sorry Sony zombies- It's the truth. Deal with it.

Posted at 6:16PM on Jan 13th 2007 by The ZeroCorpse 7 stars"

Wow, negative! Don't take it so seriously! I have a PS3 and I don't consider myself any sort of 'gangsta wannabe,' I'm a TRUE G! DIPSET! Yeah I'm joking. But seriosly, I'm just a game nut and a gadget freak - so I bought a PS3 to wind-up the usual 'console generation hat-trick' for the big three.

And GoonieGooGoo? Motorstorm is awesome... yes, I have played hours of the Japanese version at my friend's house. I'm waiting for the online US version myself, made easy by an extremely time-consuming 360 'gamerscore' war going on with my friends...

In regards to your other post, infortunately, I know 9 people on my list of 24 XBLIVE friends that have had to get their 360 repaired, including myself. It's the luck of the draw, karma, voodoo, WHATEVER. But it was a problem. Definitely NOT a deal-breaker, but a little depressing when my new (at the 5-month mark), well-cared-for 360 died, and I had to throw down the $129 fee to repair it - It was a real problem that has been dealt with by Microsoft, (witness the repair refund program that occurred late last year (yes, I got my refund check) and the extended warranty, now at 1 year).

Nearly all of this comments section is crap, it's hard to read - no one remembers how the 360 had only a few games for the first several months, mediocre backward-compatibility if you liked something other than HALO2, (thank god for Geometry Wars and CoD2) but no one will count Madden, Tiger Woods, Fight Night, Carbon, etc, as 'good PS3 games' (or any game beyond RESISTANCE) if they came out on the 360 too?

Oblivion was huge, and it's finally coming out on the PS3 - but that's "lame." Guitar Hero 2 was awesome, and it's finally coming out on the 360 - and that is 'awesome?' Hypocrites! C'mon, you guys are being fanboy extreme edition™ types... Take it easy! There's been very little beyond Wii Sports and Elebits that I even want for my Wii, but I still love it! More games are coming. No one bought the PS3 for Resistance... people buy a game system for what's coming out during it's lifespan. Did I only buy my 360 for Perfect Dark Zero? No.

As for the pricing of both systems, I think at this stage in the game, the 360 is a better value, my opinon led by 'games out' and 'online integration,' things that could improve for both Sony and Nintendo - after all, it's the future and we just don't know... I'll second the following opinion, a well-thought out and logical post from #80, Padriac, with links included in his post supporting his statements:

"80. Until the Xbox 360 has wireless built-in and a 60GB hard drive, the Premium 360 ($400) is comparable to the 20 GB PS3 ($500). End of story... Xbox folk, you'll have much better luck with a games argument than a price argument."

For the guy who has bought 28 360 titles and finds Motorstorm horrid - well one can only feel sorry for your taste! You actually found more than 5-6 games worth playing, bet you love PDZ! And on top of that, you have 20 PSP titles and just 13 DS ones? That sums you up totally! I am no Sony fanboy and the DS rocks compared to PSP!

#80 Padriac

Your an idiot GOD!!(ND reference) 1st off that online hdmi garbage is BS!!!! you can but im sure almost %80 wont so you need Prices from where people are likely buy the console from Bestbuy, gamestop, walmart which on average is 20-30 dollars. Im amazed you assumed everyone will get their hdmi cables from the same place you got them.....

and 2. Most people are getting HDMI either.....Most ps3 owners with HD set will probably have the component cables at least for now....which are 24.99 AT BESTBUY....

SO im gonna do this ONE MORE TIME ONLY
And for sake of being fair i will leave the core xbox out and i will leave the 60gig Becuase even as an xbox fan i can admit that the 20gig is a more comparo than the 60 gigs

PS3-----499 360-------399
component cables +25 INCL
Headset +15 INCL
VGA Cable(optional) N/A +40
Wireless Int +49 +99
That last one is based on the cheapest usb adaptor that walmart/bestbuy had.
Why does everyone like to add 99 for the wireless for the xbox but not for the 20gig when they compare them THE 20GIG DOES NOT HAVE WIRLESS THEREFORE THERE IS AN ADDED COST...If you cant understand then stop comparing the two

102 has summed it up perfectly. And these are the FACTS you should ignore so that you can keep on believing it:
1. "PS3 is USD200 more" - WRONG its 100USD more unless you want a bigger HD..and the missing composite cable costs less than USD10. Padriac #80 gave an excellent summary
2."360 uses Software emulation for running it's backwards compatibility games, yet Sony had to put some ps2 hardware in it to make it work"Sony put PS2 hardware at their own cost to ensure ALL PS games work..they have emulation on the way. And 360 had almost NO XBOX games working when it came out. Makes sense - there are no XBOX games worth buying other than Halo, Ninja Gaiden; Resistance offers all that Halo could with better graphics, and Ninja is coming to the PS3 anyway.
3. "360 offers more games" - which is because it LAUNCHED ONE YEAR EARLIER DUH In just three months PS3 = 360 in terms of games (Motorstorm, Lair, VF5, Resistance, Heavenly, R6) thats a one-year lead vanishing in just 6 months. The 360 had NO killer apps till Gears in Nov, still 6m sales, while the PS3 had a KILLER game on Launch - resistance, one of the best console FPS ever (check out all the 5-star reviews on amazon.com by people who have actually played it). And the PS3 will be supported years after the 360 - the PS2 came one year BEFORE the xbox, which is dead in just 4 years while you still have FF12, GoW2, Okami, Guitar Hero on PS2.

If I "can't compare" the premium 360 to the "premium ps3" because the 360 lacks wifi (even though I can add it with a ridiculously overpriced MS add on or I can buy a wifi bridge), how can you compare any PS3 with any 360 since the 360 has Xbox Live?

Grunge: Maybe you should check your facts. I think Nintendo did a better job at meeting demand selling nearly 3 times the amount of PS3s this holiday. So Nintendo pumps out 3 million units and they all get sold while Sony has 1 million which haven't sold out. I guess Sony did do a better job at meeting demand, because there was no demand to begin with.

Comparing Resistance to Halo ... that's stupid. It's stupid because they were both launch titles - and because Halo is so much better than Resistance is. It's not even better than Gears of War.

Seriously. On Gamerankings;
Resistance: 88.6% based on 52 media outlets.
Halo: 95.6% based on 92 media outlets.
Gears of War: 93.9% based on 102 media outlets.

On MetaCritic;
Resistance: 88% based on 47 reviews.
Halo: 97% based on 68 reviews.
Gears of War: 94% based on 82 reviews.

Resistance is good - but it's not great, and it's not worth $560. The message Sony is sending to consumers, both with it's one good (not great) game, and with the Blu-ray player, and with the high price point, is ... wait. Wait for the games, wait for Blu-ray to win, wait for a price drop.

That is not the way to move consoles, and it's not the way to win the war, especially since Sony suffers from starting a year late.

also i'm sick of people saying Resistance sucks. if this wasn't a ps3 launch title, you wouldn't be giving it a half the crap you do. Insomniac makes damn good games(Ratchet and Clank, the first Crash Bandicoot), and it's really sad that their work gets overshadowed by this bullshit.

Just a quick note to all of the people responding to posters like "Grunge."

Has it occurred to you that "Grunge" is probably an employee of the Zipatoni (sp?) marketing agency? Sony's already been outed about this; those ad guys weren't just running a fake PSP fansite; they were actually spamming message boards with links to the site. To me, that's proof positive that Sony's been monitoring (and covertly contributing to) the chatter on sites like this.

Also, I just question whether any Sony fanboy is truly ignorant enough to make the kinds of comments posted by "Grunge." (PS3s are sitting on shelves b/c Sony's been doing a better job meeting customer demand?) And the name "Grunge" suggests a 50-something executive struggling to "jive with the young people." (Next week, I'm guessing you'll be seeing anti-Nintendo posts by "Gangsta" and "Emo Rulz.")

It's worth thinking about. Right now, the perception of most Joystiq readers is that a hardcore contingency of Sony fans can be counted on to flame any article that discusses the sharp (and -- come on -- at this point, undeniable) decline of Sony's games division and of the Playstation brand.

But what if there really AREN'T any hardcore Sony fanboys posting comments? I don't personally know anyone who owns a PS3 or is even planning to buy one. ($600 just to play Resistance?) I do know plenty of people who, like myself, bought PS1s and PS2s (and were happy with those systems), but have now moved on to the 360 and the Wii.

""PS3 is doomed unless they lower the price"
now:
"if they're giving us deals to make it cheaper, the ps3 must be doomed""

First of all, Sony is not the company giving the discount; if you read the article, it's Gamestop and EB Games. So Sony hasn't lowered the price or made it easier for someone to buy. Why are they doing this? Because they have stock that they want to sell (and they can resell the PS2 for a small profit). The stock is not selling itself because $600 is too much for the average consumer.

Second, you have the causality backwards. I don't think "They're offering a discount, the PS3 must be doomed", I think "They must be offering a discount because the PS3 isn't selling well" (No, I don't think that it's doomed).

Third, I never said that Resistance sucks. I said that it was a good, but not great game. I then offered up what I consider to be fairly objective sources ( www.metacritic.com and www.gamerankings.com ). My issue was with 'resistance: fall of 360', someone who claims not to be a fanboy. Resistance is not better than Halo.

If you say that no one would take issue with the quality of Resistance if it weren't the only good launch title, I agree wholeheartedly. The Sony fanboys make it out to be the best game ever - better than Gears, better than Halo, better than any FPS (or TPS) ever. It's not. It's good, but not that good.

Truth is, the 360 is much closer to historic prices, when adjusted for inflation.

NES: $355
Sega Genesis: $390
Playstation (the original): $372

Let me do some simple math for you idiot 360 lovers:

XBOX 360- $399
+HD DVD Player-$199
+WiFi-$99
That amounts to $700

PS3-$599
-BluRay Included
-Wifi Included

so thats $700 for the same sh1t in the xbox 360 as you get in the PS3 for $100 more, and oh wait, I forgot to add in the fact that you're still 40gigs short of having the same memory as the PS3. Sounds simple enough for me.

OK OK ENOUGH! What I see here is fanboy this, fanboy that. PS3 sucks, 360 sucks. Ya? well Can't you see this is all about nothing? All of the "next-gen" systems rock, in their respective areas. Because I know that every one of you people would own all 3 if you had the cash. Now I see it as this PS3 advanced system= $599.99 - deal of $100 off= $499.99. THATS THE DEAL PRICE FOR THE DAM ADVANED PS3, contest that, I will hurt you. Next think about this. What came out about 4 years ago that was about $7000? Plasma TV's, A new tech for the time. I see Plasmas better than those for $1500 now. Why say this? New tech. cost go down fast as it improves. The same will happen with HD-DVD and blue-ray. More-so for blue ray as the heavy price tag for market players ($1000+). I see B.R prices dropping at least $300 this year. Allowing for more use, allowing more devolpment. There! a cycle is started. And as the B.R gets cheaper, that gives it a deadly edge in the format war. Winning out. killing more or less dvd sales for the 360, and striking a deadly blow. Don't get me wrong, I love all three systems, having played all three. And I don't own any! I see problems in all three. first the 360, 3 words: READ DISK ERROR.....pwned. The Wii: well just look at http://www.wiihaveaproblem.com and see for yoursesdfaw. Sorry... Wiimote flew past my head. And finally the PS3: I see no real problems, except for the price(before the deal of course!) and the lack of rumble.... R.I.P for now my friend.... and all of the negative kudos........... from people like you.... This concludes this senceless rant. Brought to you by Brock co. and by the way I'm just a kid with a $7 an hour job, and I could buy a PS3, and I plan to in about a month or two, letting people find bugs

I don't think that you can interpret that promotion as a sign of desperation for the PS3. The ad also offers $50 off a Wii with a Gamecube trade and $50 off a DS with a Gameboy trade. If you really want a PS3 it's probably a good deal. Simple as that
