Europe's 'This is living' PS3 ad
101
The U.S. PS3 ads had a demonic baby, crows and Rubik's Cubes. The European's get a commercial about the cell processor being like a girl with amazing cup stacking abilities. Sister site PS3 fanboy posted this earlier and their thoughts are pretty much as diplomatic as one can be, "This European TV commercial is a bit less abstract than some of the earlier PS3 ads. But that doesn't mean it's any more effective." At least the European commercial showed some game footage.

This ad is awful. Comparing a processor to a girl stacking cups is like comparing the internet to a series of tubes.

The sad thing is, Sony used to have some great marketing. Award-winning marketing. Check out this absolutely brilliant (and award-winning) ad for the Bravia:

Even if Sony finds a scapegoat, it won't change the fact that no one wants a $600 console. All the marketing in the world won't change the fact that HD is owned by a small minority of the population, and the PS3 doesn't have any system selling games.

The message I got from it:
Eating pie while cup stacking cups in a Euro bar is as much fun as eating pie and processing a million things around you (like the different flavors of pie and the rich buttery crust of that apple, or the decadent chocolately goodness of that mousse pie) while being a girl. The guy on the other hand doesn't get pie for some reason (maybe he's a stupid cake person). I think there was something about a car driving game or something, but let's face it: driving cars isn't in the same ballpark as pie... you can't eat a steering wheel.

Also, HDTV market penetration in Europe is tiny when compared to Japan and America, which makes most of the PS3s hypeable features worthless. Who would want Blu-ray when you have an SDTV?

Also, the cup stacking trend makes the dumb 80's fads I grew up with seem downright exciting by comparison. I have a funny feeling we're going to see a lot more bartenders in ten years thanks to this craze.

the funny thing is that here in Europe, or at least Spain, we don't give a crap about cup stacking contests, it's just something we know you americans do from TV (like spelling contests). I don't know, it's just sad how Sony just keep messing everything up for themselves, even at marketing their stuff, it's disastrous.
But i hated the "Wii like to play" comercial just as much, though. The one i love is this one from Xbox http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9CK37sqoz0

Well one reaction:
"See how well PS3 players can stack cups! Just like workers will proudly work harder to stack hundreds of unsold units in stores today! We can beat the 360 and Wii by offering stacking lessons in every store! Don't buy today, we don't care! We must stack!"
Another is "that girl was really stacked. Huh huh." And "He said, 'stacked!'"

I GOT NOTHING OUT OF THAT AD! HOW LAME. . . PARTLY BECAUSE I DIDN'T WATCH IT. Now that I got your attention, I did see a whole stack of ps3's(all 60gb)at my local walmart, here on 27th street in Milwaukee, WI. The sad part is that no one seemed interested in them (i.e. because of price) All the Wii's were sold out, and they only had one 360 left... how sad. I should also note, that there were a stack of psp's that filled the entire case they were locked up in, but not one DS could be found. Take it for what its worth, but its sad to see that its clear that the ps3's price point, and the fact that it pushes the drive for HDTV, which has alienated the average blue collar worker which lives in this area.

I could have sworn that Sony knew how to market products back when the PS2 was released. Did they fire everyone and hire retarded monkeys to work for them instead?
They should take a hint from Nintendo. I don't think any marketing has ever gotten me as pumped for a product as watching people diving over furniture and shadow-boxing while playing video games.

Also, wasn't it one of the japanese sony execs who said that, people would want the ps3 so much that in order to afford it they would push themselves to work more overtime just to get extra money in order to pay for it?. . . Yeah, I don't see that happening anywhere.

Haven't seen any parody jokes about its price yet...let me fill that important gap.
Instead of "This is living," it should be...
"This is $600!"
or
"THIS is $600?!???!! WTF?!"
or
"This has no games...yet!"
or
"This has no good online...yet"
or
"This has no good games or online, but it's still worth $600!"
or
"This is the only console in 10 years without rumble"
or
"This is the new Neo-Geo."
and lastly,
"This is Kutaragi's wet dream, made for him by him, whether the consumer wants it or not."

This ad should instead be a split screen of 2 gamers....
One playing GEARS OF WAR & RAINBOW SIX: VEGAS flawlessly online with their 360s.
The Other playing with their kids and the Wii
At the end....THIS IS LIVING

What I got from the ad:
Cup stacking speed is the same for 3 kids, which represent the processing speed of the 3 systems. If you wear a white shirt, you get a head start, and are available by Christmas. If you wear a brown shirt, you wait a while (possibly until March) and then start, but stack cups at the same exact speed, so you lose. All 3 kids/systems have awkward slo-mo lag.
