portable games aren't just for commutes. My wife is just not the sort of person who wants to dominate the big screen for hours on end playing bleary eyed gaming. But she will throw the TV on and curl up in the corner of the couch with the DS. I think it just accomodates different people's mindsets and interests a lot more than Gears of Excessive Gratuitious Neverending Violence ever could...

my wife played this on the PC for hours and hours!

It's $20 for the PC, I hope Nintendo isn't going to charge $35

I've been really into these games lately. I signed up for bigfishgames' '12 games for $6.99 each' deal, and have been totally loving games like Diner Dash and Mystery Case Files. However, a DS version doesn't appeal to me at all, part of my fondness for the games is being able to play them fullscreen when I'm bored at a PC, not to mention the ubercheap price.

Personally, I don't find the DS very 'casual' at all- in the UK the games are still priced as high as new PS2 games, and the games don't tend to have as much longetivity. As far as train journeys as such go, I like to zone out with an mp3 player, as opposed to frantically scribble on a handheld, especially when light tends to reflect off its screen in the worst possible way, combined with precise stylus input being incredibly awkward in a moving vehicle. On a similar note, I don't find the Wii appealing for me to play in short bursts either, certainly not in a casual way.

Ironically, I'm finding the 360 the closest to a 'casual game system'... once you get past the console pricetag at least, anyway. Tons of high quality casual games on its marketplace, plus retail games starting to drop in price too, makes it my current most played console. I recently picked up DOAX2, and it's such a perfect casual game. I know the American male gamer stereotype can't see much in the game past 'onos the breasts bounce lol!!' and 'omg it takes so long to get the achievement points', but some people can actually play it for casual fun. The main volleyball and waverace games are great to play, the buying costumes and accessories appeals to me, and there's nothing better than playing a high risk game of poker at the end of the day.

Well, I've rambled off-topic long enough now, so I'll summarise-- the DS is far from being a casual handheld game system (mobile phones hold that territory), and casual games really don't suit the DS as worthwhile choices to buy, even for fans of the casual game franchises like myself.

Rubang B: While writing the numbers in with a stylus in a Sudoku game does feel kinda cool, it's still something that just feels more appropriate as a cell phone game. Especially given 'just arrows and numbers' nature of cellphone keypads.

GAMER GOD: For fun, one would assume. I could be wrong though. Maybe we're just highly fond of cake.

I was surprised when I starting seeing these things in retail stores for the PC. I guess there are still people out there without internet connections or they're still afraid to use their credit card over the internet.

These games are perfect for the DS. Simple point-n-click interface and easy save/continue mechanism. Only problem is you can finish most of them in a day or two.
