Today's retro-iest game video: iPod with NES controller

We've seen people turn the NES controller into a remote control, turn the NES console into an alarm clock, and even shove a Mac mini inside. Now folks are even cramming things into the NES controller itself. When will the madness end? Nintendo probably had no idea that this thing would be so versatile when they invented it. If someone ever makes one that can heat up pop-tarts, we're sold.
Check out the wackiness after the jump, and start figuring how else you can hack this sucker.

Does this guy have a camera embedded in his chest?
reppy @ Jan 14th 2007 4:11AM
That's actually pretty slick.

Whoa whoa whoa, I thought he was gonna use the D-Pad and buttons to control song selection, volume, etc. on the iPod. You didn't tell me was gonna fucking play DOOM on it. That was the raddest thing.
alexanderwales @ Jan 14th 2007 4:59AM
I (for whatever reason) thought he was going to stick the iPod into the NES controller, like a carrying case or something. That description for the video was incredibly vague...

Whoa. alexanderwales is right. But in a good way. Now everytime you put a video on joystiq you should get everyone's hopes down. That was fucking sweet :)

If I could play Doom on my ipod, I'd probably use the poor neglected thing a little more often. The DS is currently my bus-and-subway-riding gadget of choice.

I find it nearly impossible to play any FPS that doesn't let me strafe, nowadays. Thank goodness for jDoom. Awesome mod!

Boooooring. Why do people have to stuff things into things since the start of youtube.com? Why are we bothered with such irrelevant stuff people with apparently no life are doing?

That was amazing! The only thing that kind of sucks is the delay between input and response on-screen, other than that, hurry up and get sound support already iDoom! :D

I don't own an iPod, but I checked this thing out on a whim. I thought he was going to flip the NES controller over and the iPod would be embedded into the back of it. This was a pretty cool mod and pretty cool video.
It also features Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine as the background music.
The Bear @ Jan 14th 2007 1:53PM
Yeah, good call on the Richard Cheese. For some reason, I found it appropriate. And Itekei, maybe it's his hobby. No one bites on your style for whatever waste of time you invest yourself into.

Wait, you people are just finding out you can play DOOM on your iPod now? I thought this was common knowlage.
If you get the DS-X chip for half the price of an iPod you can play 16 player Wi-Fi Doom II on your DS. :)

Man, I'd love to see a how-to on how to on that NES controler--although I'd pee myself if someone did that with a classic Atari joystick :)
