I don't have a PS3, so I can't comment on that one, but I do know the Xbox 360 is noisy when a disc is in the drive and the Wii can be noisy under certain circumstances-- like if it's not in the base properly, or with certain games. Red Steel comes to mind.

It would be interesting if someone could redo the test, but under more scientific and precise controls.

I love how, no matter what the post about Wii is about, you get the following responses:

1) mostly legitimate nintendo fans calmly discussing the topic at hand (sure there are some "wiitards" as people call them that will show their blind fanboy love and insult the competition, but they seem pretty few and far between, usually)
2) random ms or sony fan saying something along the lines of "Now let's listen to Wii owners piss, moan and shit their pants over this one." (Thanks #12 for this example)
3) random ms or sony fans saying "WII SUCKS! [PS3/360] is for real gamers!" or similar
4) way too few random ms or sony fans (if you're lucky, 1 or 2 per topic) saying something along the lines of "while I am a [ms/sony] fan myself, [calmly discusses topic at hand, whether they are for or against it]"

me? I'm a fan of nintendo, have been since I got my NES in '86, so the #2's and #3's of this thread will of course post something in response to this about how I am 'full of shit' or whatever, but the number 4's of Joystiq? I salute you. At least SOME of us can have a rational conversation about things.

I find it amusing that a flame war started in one of Vlad's post, and the flame war pretty much had nothing to do with the topic

Either Vlad must have a talent for writing flamer-attracting posts, or people must be especially bitchy today...

And i second the claim that i would like Wii with a harddrive

And the only major problems with 360 are as follows
1: Microsoft's shoddy business model. If MS ever decides to downsize divisions to maximize profits, 360 and Zune will be 1st to go
2: Genre disparity (360 fans hate when you talk about this), but if you want to see games of wild or original genres (something original like Cooking Mama or DDR) than an MS system is not for you

The fans are not what makes the 360 loud. It is the DVD drive spinning. The fans are quiet. Go to the dashboard and the 360 barely makes any noise. Start a game, and the DVD drive makes a shitload of noise because it is spinning so fast.

I may be wasting my time here, but it would be nice if this reply is read, digested and responded too instead of gettign more of the above, but here we go.

The Intangible Fact: First off my credentials. I'm 27 and have grown up with computers and games since I was a kid. When I was 5 I got hooked on my Commodore 64 whilst my sister had a ZX Spectrum + and the kitchen held a TI-99 and a Binatone (6 in 1 pong/lightgun console). I played though the age of the Oliver Twins, Ocean, Jeff Minter, etc. I saw the dawn of the NES and got lost in many a shop playing at the kiosk on Duck Hunt and Mario. I have never been without console or computer since and have a hefty collection of Nintendo, Sega, Atari, Sony and other consoles. Games are in the thousands and consoles/computers are in the 30-40 range. I hope this rids me of the "kiddie" motif you seem to apply.

Heres my response: You will notice I don't own an Xbox. There are a few reasons for this. As a PC owner of many many years I grew to hate the big corporate who took Amiga Workbench and made an OS that crashed and needed formatting and rebooting aplenty. The BSoD became a sight that make keyboards magically hit walls. Over more recent years Windows 2K and XP have been very very solid and Microsoft have increased in my opinion, but my INITIAL thoughts on the Xbox was HOW DARE M.S. try and take over the console market AS WELL!

These days I'm a more rational towards it, but I look at the original Xbox and see only a handful of non-exclusive titles I would say are must haves (Fable, Ninja Gaiden, Halo 1 & 2 and one other than escapes my mind at the moment). The rest are very much Americo-centric games and here in the UK, not many are lining up for EA Sports titles; John Madden and NHL franchises seldom turn us on.

With the above in mind you will see that after a year I look at the Xbox360 and only find myself drawn towards Dead Rising and Gears of War. The graphics that most judge games by are available on my PC and the first person shootemups have a mouse and keyboard on that platform. Consequently I am after original and engaging titles to sell me, not raw power.

In defence of games with great graphics, it is these sorts of titles that push the boundaries of technology. It is great to see the attention to detail and the slow move away from what me and my friend use to call "Wax Work Dummy Syndrome" on the Playstation to more realistic looking characters and models. However this isn't enough. You only have to look at Warioware or Guitar Hero to see how a simplistic game can be immeasurably more fun to play.

Until the games on the Xbox360 stray from the more visually impressive to the original and engrossing your assertion that it is THE console of this generation, in my opinion at least, is false.

So now, I turn your question back to you. In as rational and polite manner as I have shown you, why do you believe the Xbox360 is so much better than the rest?

That is nonsense. I own all three and the 360 is by far the loudest. I've yet to hear any noise from the PS3. The Wii makes a little noise but not much. I can hear my 360 running from like 30ft away when my house is quiet.

@chuma #56

I read your post (I know I’m not intangible Fact) but I can understand your points. and a simple comment.

In a probably non-existent world where people listen and rationally discuss topics, the real question for people shouldn't be which system is "best", but which system is best for them.
not everyone holds the same opinions/likes/dislikes/backgrounds/etc.
people who expect to convince other people that ‘their’ way is the only way is sad and close-minded.
(Unfortunately that’s how a lot of things are in the real world. One sided.)

I personally have a 360(w/the hdd) and a Wii. I never really considered owning a ps3. because in my life, the 360 and the wii more than satisfy my gaming appetite. I really enjoy online console gaming. And the 360 gives me an amazing experience from Uno to Gears of War. The Wii to me was just to good to pass up. it’s nice to take a break from one with the other. The experiences are totally different.

I personally hope that all three console thrive. Competition is a good thing. If all three are successful, hopefully it will mean that game developers are also prospering and given more opportunities to provide gamers with great games.

Now that we've started rationally discussing things here, here's my 2 cents.

The X-Box 360 is a great system, but its 2 main selling points are FPS games and online gaming. These don't appeal to me because I have Counterstrike and Starcraft on my PC, both with free online. It seems like the 360's main competition at this point is the PC.

The Wii's main selling point is the Wii remote, which is something nobody else is offering right now. If new input methods in gaming interest you, then neither the Wii nor the DS have any competition.

And in all seriousness, I have no idea what Sony is thinking right now. I think $600 is too much for anything, and that if enough people buy a ps3, it will tell Sony it's OK to charge $1,000 for the PS4. (If the PS3 somehow makes a comeback and succeeds at $600, we'll see how much you shell out in 5 or 6 years for the next one.) It seems like the PSP is trying to fight off the GBA, the DS, and the iPod all at once, and is failing miserably, and the PS3 is trying to take on the whole world of electronics.

Also, I've seen 2 comments here asking about the password system here. Does anybody know where you put in the password to avoid the e-mail confirmations?

@ Rubang B

The password system is implemented in SOME Weblogs, inc. Blogs, (check Engadget), but not in joystiq

Ignore the Password in your confirmation email, although Joystiq may pull off the system in the future (please, joystiq?)

I don't Have a Wii. Will soon.
But I know this Article is a Total Lye.
My 360 is WAY Louder than my PS3 no matter what I am doing, Game, CD, DVD, etc.
I don't need a meter to know that. My PS3 is whisper Quiet. My 360 is Screaming Loud. This is why my PS3 is my DVD Player and not my 360.
Yet the Article shows them Nearly Tied. What a Bunch of BS.

So I hardly believe this Article when it says the Wii is Loudest.

why are you guys arguing about this? if you want to see which one is noisier, then buy them and compare. I do not have Wii, but I have Xbox360 and PS3, and XBOX360 is much noisier than PS3 specially when it is running media.

Instead of just measuring the decibel they should test for actual loudness as in annoyance. This value is defined as "Sone" and is used in most tests involving electrical equipment and noise level.

Sone

Yes, the Wii sometimes makes a strange "clacking" sound when reading a DVD or switching between several channels, but that is all. During play, there is no sound of the inserted media. Cannot say if it is "louder" (very subjective and difficult to measure) than a 360 or PS3. Actually the DS from my girlfriend is louder because she always turns up the music :-/

I'm amazed that people actually care which console is louder than the other. as long as its not distracting, who cares? My wii, when you load a disc, it clicks twice, and thats it. Those clicks are kind of loud, but probably only seem loud because the system itself is usually pretty quiet. Does a couple of clicks make it a bad system? hell no! 360's fans are loud? Who cares? At least you know that microsoft designed the thing well and worked hard to keep it from overheating. The PS3 is quieter than the 360 (and Wii even?) What does that matter? Does one system being slightly louder than the others make the games bad?
you all suck.
