Glad I still have my 80 ,or so, DC games all nicely lined up.

Still, it's sad Sega is doing this. Not end of the world Dreamcast is dead sad, but sad none the less.

SEGA 4 life.

Xbox 360 is the embodiment of what the Dreamcast stood for and could have potentially been if Sega created a sequel: great games, graphics, sound, connectivity, and superb accessories.

I hate to see an end to official Dreamcast games, but the real question is will this mean an end to all games on the Naomi, Naomi 2, Chihiro, and Triforce arcade boards as well? Without Naomi games, we wouldn't have seen any worthwhile releases after 2001 with or without GD-rom discs.

The arcade boards that played GD-ROMs were outdated a long time ago. Who wants to pay to play original XBox and Gamecube-quality games in the arcade? This format has been dead to Sega for a while. The sad thing is Naomi was a great board for smaller developers like Milestone, Warashi, and G.rev because it was cheap and easy to produce the interchangeable games and the systems were everywhere. (It was a lot like the Neo-Geo MVS system.) Maybe modern PC-based arcade formats make the advantages of Naomi and Neo-Geo unimportant, but I'm guessing this is another nail in the coffin for arcades. (And there was already an ample amount of nails!)

"Xbox 360 is the embodiment of what the Dreamcast stood for and could have potentially been if Sega created a sequel: great games, graphics, sound, connectivity, and superb accessories."

This describes pretty much every console system that has ever existed, with the possible exceptions of the 3DO and CD-i.

The Dreamcast had a lot of truly *unique* games not available on any current system, Xbox 360 or any other. It was also the home of a lot of original arcade-style games that did get continued on current systems, but that were never as good as the originals (e.g. Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio).

No other system will ever be like it, because it's all about unique and original games. That's what separates the great systems from the rest of the pack.

yes, i agree with the two comments somewhere above me. the dreamcast was incredible. and i firmly believe the xbox 360 the spiritual successor of the dreamcast. but different, nonetheless.

By embodiment of Dreamcast, you mean it's white and Peter Moore is involved, right? Because the rest of the stuff you mentioned applies to just about every mainstream console.

I've sent you this Message before but you never replied, I gave you the original URL and all. An Employee from Sega who also happens to post often on a message board participate in has sent me a Pm after i kept buggind him about some sega new he was going to post. It seems Sega might be thinking of a new DreamCast with a superior format Pm is as follows:
I didn't make a post about it...because i'm not supposed to talk about it yet...

But The news was about a couple things...we are going to be hosting Some of the Microsoft servers as well...which means they are coming out with the bigger HDD machine because we are helping them run the servers for the increased bandwidth...

THE DC 2 was mentioned but it wasn't mentioned as a 100% yet...they are just showing pics of early design concepts of what it could look like if it's officially announced or released...NOONE who has any power will say for sure if it's coming...but the general consensus and vibe around the office is that it is going to be made...and the "not talked about specs" are supposedly said to absolutely destroy the 360 and PS3...talked about it being able to run all three media's (DVD, BR, HD-DVD) play all dreamcast, saturn, and Sega Cd games out the box...wireless controllers...teh full 9 at a sub-par $500 price tag...but like I said noone with any power is confirming this even for us employees...as soon as I know something i'm putting it on BX for sure...

Peter Moore carried on his online dream from the dreamcast to the Xbox, in this respect the 360 is Dreamcast successor!

The King is dead! Long live the King!

WTF are you rambling on about GeorgeyBoi? I meant in my post that everytime I play a Xbox 360 it feels like it is the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast. Much in the same way that Ikaruga is the spiritual successor to Radiant Silvergun. In that game the core mechanic of fighting is different but the atmosphere is reminiscent of the feeling you got battling it out, all or nothing, throughout the entire game.

talked about it being able to run all three media's (DVD, BR, HD-DVD) play all dreamcast, saturn, and Sega Cd games out the box...wireless

What ???? Come on, I was born at night but not last night. Where do we begin..... Oh yeah, plays both BR and HD-DVD.... LG just got that working recently.... oh but Sega has had that technology all along? Yeah, because they are more in tune with HD-DVD and BR then a company that is making the actual players.

Sega is NOT going to get back into the counsel market.... ever. They are doing fine in the software end and are making a profit at it. They also are still HUGE in the arcade market.

A Sega employee should know this.

PS - Im also curious what a Sega CD is?

Are you sure you weren't born yesterday? You've never heard of Sega CD, the infamous attachment for the genesis (Megadrive) that bombed?

Your age is showing.

This is sad news for us Dreamcast entusiasts. T_T

I was always excited to see new games coming out for DC but I always thought "when will they stop the production of GD-ROMs?". Well... it seems like this day finally came.

Anyway, it means no more official games for the DC, but it doesn't mean the videogame is dead!! We'll probably continue to see new games being launched by independent producers.

Dudes, witht he proper boot code Dreamcasts run CD-R's. So I think they can just compress the game data to fit it under 800MB (since GD roms had around a gig to play with).

So I think we'll all be ok.
