Great move. Better yet - can the 20 gig model all together. Dual SKU only confuses people...

Hey Nick....

I don't own a PS3 yet but I have never even considered the 20GB version for when I do get one....

For less than $100 your getting wifi and 3 times the HDD space...I don't understand why anyone would buy the lesser system...if it is a matter of $ just save up for an extra week or two or three...

Sony should just drop it.

Thanks Wargazm...

Why do you feel screwed over by Sony? Is some nefarious organization causing you to buy their products and hang out on their fanboy sites?

I know you probably can't answer because that same nefarious force will probably castrate you, so I'll just pray that you'll be ok.

If you can answer...please...how does this announcement affect you 'a fan' in any possible way? What...you were going to buy a 20GB system and can't hold out any longer?

Do you think there will be the same interest for PS3's a week or two after the initial 60gb launch?
(Many people simply won't have the money for the 60gb version)

It's probably a good move for Sony because they are likely to earn more profits from the move.
But, they will be making profits at OUR expense. They are playing with our heads. People won't want to wait for the 20gb version (MORE waiting...?) so Sony have basically manipulated people into spending more money than they probably intended.
Sure, it's good for Sony, but NOT for us!

L, exactly. Things aren't going to go that well over here in Europe. Things will go good, but not great.

I know people who want PS3's and are completely resistant to any 360 "rubbish" (I don't think it would matter if the Xbox 360 could simulate sex for cheaper... I think it's just on the fact that they think Playstations are cool.)
but many can't afford Playstation 3's. They can probably afford 360's, of course and well as we know, they are quite good! (I'm not saying Playstation 3's aren't good or anything but definitely because of the price and the fact that the consoles aren't very different then the Xbox 360 beats it - in my eyes)

"For less than $100 your getting wifi and 3 times the HDD space...I don't understand why anyone would buy the lesser system...if it is a matter of $ just save up for an extra week or two or three..."

Because not everyone needs wireless, card reader, and extra hard drive space. Currently, I don't need any of it. I don't even need HDMI, but it is on there now.

I was going to buy the lesser model until I figured that a direct wireless connection to the PSP would be nice. And the $100 off helped, too. ;)

Sony really needs to simplify the PS3 and find a way to get the price down. As it currently stands, I don't see how an unmotivated consumer would be willing to jump through the hoops to get what they want out of it (price, browsing, linux, remote access, etc).

It's hardly trendy to hate Sony (or its products). They bring it on themselves with no sign of slowing down. It's okay to love the games and hate the path it takes to play them. Think of Windows or Internet Explorer.

@4: The whole point is that I'm NOT a Sony fan. You know why? because they spit in consumer's faces, constantly, and arrogantly. Why would I give them my money?

What shocks me is not only how many people put up with it, but how many people rationalize it and spin it. It happens time and time again...it's small wonder that Sony does such a shitty job with PR nowadays...they have their loyal fanbase working overtime to spin every blunder into a miracle for them.

This particular announcement means that consumers will not have a choice of what to buy. THAT'S how it hurts. Who cares if the $600 model is a better deal? It should be up to the consumer to decide which one he/she wants to buy.

In the grand scheme of things, no, this isn't a huge problem. But it's just another bullet on a long list of items that has Sony arrogantly stomping on consumers.

Anyone that actually cares about who works for a company, and what do each employee say about any particular product of that company or whatsoever, instead of caring about how *good* or not is the particular product, is a dipshit. Don't worry, though. We all know you are not a dipshit; you're just a hypocrite that doesn't like Sony products, yet has to find a(nother) stupid reason not to buy them. It's ok that you don't like Sony products, but don't pretend you don't buy them because a particular employee said something that may have offended you (despite the fact that it wasn't personal). Don't be retarded, please.

Sony isn't screwing customers. If consumers don't like it, they don't have to buy it, it's that simple. Either wait for the 20 GB model to come out if you don't like the 60 GB, or shut the hell up if you don't even want one in the first place. Worthless.

@Wargazm...

Dude/Dudette...you have to come out of the closet. What possible reason could you have for visiting a Sony fanboy site other than, deep inside, you want to belong?

Sony is not taking choice away...it is making a decision based on sales in Japan and North America, to focus on getting as many of their best selling PS3 products into the hands of Europeans.

Ownership of a PS3 is not your right. It is a consumer product and the company making that product will decide where and when it will sell. No different than any other company out there. ( Oh no...Apple won't sell it's iPod phone in Canada...I demand justice! )

If you don't wish to wait for this product you have complete freedom to move on...but please, move on and leave the fanboy sites for actual fanboys (or at least for people that can be rational).

@SuicideNinja

Part of that 'simplification' you seek should be to just drop the 20GB version anyway.

With IPTV on the XBox soon (demanding HD space) and MythTV already up and running (sort of) demanding HD space on the PS3 they should just focus on the one machine come hell or high water.

My comment with regard to wireless comes from being a PS2 owner that can't get his head around how expensive a wireless bridge is...to me built wireless is a deal breaker for my next console.

i understand the whole "sony needs to lower the price" arguement, but the ps3 is $5-600 cheaper than a blu-ray player, and it plays blu-ray. As it sits in stores right now, it's a way to get a blu-ray player for half the price of a real one. That seems worth it to me.

Ken> Your ability to predict the future is astounding. Nothing sways an argument like inventing a future fiction to prove your point.
Fact is: Sony has made promise after promise and has broken pretty much all of them. And, at European prices, the lower model makes a LOT of sense. Forcing your customers to wait 5-6 months, then hurling an $800 wad of plastic in their laps isn't exactly charming or "customer-oriented" is it?

#17 I agree that it is a good deal if you are intrested in the BD player as well but I have not used mine to play a BD yet except for the included one. I just like color of HDdvd better. But that aside I wish we would all stop trying to rationalize the price. They will not lower it if everyone keeps arguing FOR them that its a deal! I can go buy a Corvette Z06 for $80,000 and beat most cars that cost $200,000. Does that make it a deal for the money? Yeah but I still dont have $80,000 to spend on a car so it doesnt matter. I know a lot of people around me that may want a PS3 but they either got a 360 or nothing and will be waiting for the price to drop and I know for sure one of them gets on here sometimes and has said they get pissed off when people defend the skyhigh price for including stuff he doesnt want.

I'd just like to thank you Ciaran for making an informative post that goes against the PS3 without telling everyone who buys a product made by Sony(hundreds of millions of people) that they are idiots.

I think its a good idea, they should have done that in the US cause no one wants to stand in line for 24 hours only to get a lesser model.

Kspraydad-

Has it occurred to you that people that are not necessarily PS3/Sony fans might come here because its better to be educated than an imbecile? Just because its PS3fanboy.com doesn't mean its a safe haven for Sony spoon feeding its hardcore fanbase. Grow up.

Ciaran-
A quick economic clarification for you. Sony losing money on every PS3 is not PROFIT its a deficit. The reason they are doing this is because they know the starved Euro's will pay anything for a PS3 because they have already been screwed for a change and had to wait for a PAL unit. Sony is trying to minimize a substantial loss on each PS3 unit sold by only offering the more expensive unit. This has nothing to do with what is good for Sony fans and what is good for Sony's already negative bottom line. No amount of spin can convince a level headed person of this.

How many times does Sony have to lie before some people will think twice before drinking their Kool-Aid again?

I am the proud owner of the 20gb model!! The 60gb version is somewhat a scam since it is common sense that wi-fi is not good/fast enough to play online with. Also the card reader, ect.., ports are unneccessary as I just use a 1gb usb smart disk to load pictures and system updates (I am currently on wi-fi now on a laptop and cannot afford a direct connect at the momemt/wi-fi is good for surfing the net, nothing more). Also, I wanted the chrome version too when I saw it on the web for the first time. Seeing it in a display however, the unit looks sorta tacky with the chrome (like plastic chrome colored license plate holders). Also, the fact that I am in the scene, the 60gb hd is not big enough to use for Linux, and future exploits. People have already found a way to link an external 3.5 which can get up to 750gb through a sata connection. If this gives you a headache, wait for the procrastinated teamxetender hd add on case which will plug in tightly and securely to the device. You can also buy a more expensive 200gb 2.5 sata drive and chuck either the 20gb/60gb at relentless 360 fans. Also the 60gb card reader area flips up and might break off accidently if you are a complete moron. Another reason to go 20gb, is that ironically the all black scheme looks much more Vader like. Trust me, it is all just add ons you will never really use unless you have a psp, but personally speaking the psp sucks. Due yourself all favors and buy one on ebay, EU buyers that is, I paid 550 bucks for mine on ebay, came with a shrink wrapped nb2k7, and I exchanged that title for resistance to some store. Do da math. Your kinda getting robbed. I always get robbed when I have to order stuff from the UK btw. Don't put up with that.

I'm gonna get the 20gb version WHEN it comes to Europe because:

Wifi = There WILL be a solution for it.

Card Reader = If I ever will need it I have a usb+cardreader hub that I can use.

HDD = If I ever need more then 20gb I can plugin my external HDD or buy a 2.5" and swap out the old one!

What I fear about he Wifi solution you are hoping for is that it will cost more than just getting the 60gb version ... take a look at the cost of adding wifi to a ps2 or Xbox 360....it is more than the cost difference.

That is why I've never contemplated a 20GB system.

I agree with Kspraydad (post #2) - for the first week or so some hardcore games will try to buy PS3

I also think that 100$ less for 20GB model without wifi and hdmi is not a great deal as well, too
