I don't see why Joystiq takes it upon themselves to post every single scrap of Halo that they can find. The game doesn't come out for a long time, and already the hype machine is worked up this much? Halo isn't the greatest game of all time, not by a long shot. It's a shooter - on a console. If you want a real shooter, go to a computer and use a mouse. Trust me, you'll thank me later.

Interesting, I'll only play Halo 3 if they release it on the PC somewhat soon to the original (with the PC - Xbox 360 compatibilies through Xbox Live now, I'm sure it will be. In which case, this is a good upgrade over the last two games.

Halo may not be the greatest FPS of all time. But it certainly saved the xbox, and is one of, it not the biggest selling series on the system. Halo sells Xboxes. So that means people are buying Xboxes to play it. Hell it even did well on PC. So if a scrap of Halo info isn't newsworthy neither is anything else on Joystick save convention coverage.

OMG I think my head just exploded. Which other game in history has had this kind of coverage? Do we need to know the tiny imaginary details of a standard weapon in the game, details that won't affect gameplay at all?

We have now go to the Trekkie stage. Making up details for the sake of it. I do believe Halo just became geeky.

I can't wait for the indepth profiles about every minor detail about this overhyped game! Next week: a 5 page expose on the clouds and skies in Halo 3. What makes the clouds so fluffy? We look behind the scenes as the animators show us how they make those clouds so lifelife! And the advanced technology that makes it possible for those blue skies to look so gosh-darn blue! Coming up in two weeks......we look behind the curtain to get an advance preview of the new reflective technology that makes the water reflections so accurate and awesome!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....wake me up when it's over.

I like getting little bits of info for a game slowly over time. It makes it a little more interesting instead of finding out everything at once and then having to wait... It makes the waiting easier knowing that instead of waiting for the game I can get a little here a little there... BTW IMHO I hope they don't add sprint or a weight of weapons affects movement type of thing. Halo was great because it was simple. Everyone was on an even playing field.

Honestly I believe it would a group of gamers that care. I care just as much about any info on Metal Gear and the FF series. And really any other game that looks like it might be big. Only difference is Bungie lets little bits out every now and again as opposed to the others leaking things. We know this info is accurate because they told us not some cousin's uncle's friend's brother's room mate's sister's mother's friend's son's monkey's buddy...

Sorry if someone actually has an interest differing that of your own. Also just so its not just games I follow... Movies and also novels... for instance George RR Martin's song of ice and fire novel just got picked up by HBO for a possible series...

Stop stroking your ego Bungie. We don't have to know about every little detail of Halo 3. No one cares what Master Chief's (that's a rank, not a name Bungie) average body temperature, shoe size, shirt size, or blood type. So, don't go into tese minute details that you just pull out your ass.

Sadly, Bungie used to be great...then MS bought them and forced them to become Halo only. Too bad they'll never make another Myth or Oni game.

This is _bar none_ the stupidest post I've ever seen on Joystiq.

Aren't they talking about an ARTIFICIAL gun? Those notable differences would only make sense if the weapon was produced in REAL LIFE! Are they making real life weapons modeled after Halo guns now? Housing of an electronics suite? Handguard with better grip? Has someone invented a way to teleport into a video game (a la Tron)? It's a freakin' virtual 3D model drawn by artists!

WTF?!

Bungie is well aware that "Master Chief" is a rank. Of the Spartan unit he was the "Master Chief" and as such was refered to as such.

I am only doing this because its a boring day at work but anyway. So your saying the fact that oh Rainbow six shouldn't bother with the stats on the guns because its virtual? Just because it isn't real doesn't mean it doesn't have some "real life" equivilant stat. Its for fun. I enjoy reading this and I bet my buddy that works as a gun designer would like this info because he would actually understand it and for me it adds a little to it and show they actually put some work into it instead of just drawing a gun and saying it does this and that...

Like Sigh pointed out, its not a clip but a magazine. A clip is something that LOADS a magazine. Some guns, Like the M1 Garand use clip to load the fixed MAGAZINE inside the rifle. The MAGAZINE is what loads the gun, and here you are acting like this is a real gun, when you don't even know the difference between a clip and a magazine. For shame...

People who are complainig about this posts irrelevance are ignorant not only to Bungie's usual mode of operation, but Joystiq's.

Bungie didn't release this info as news to the gaming world in general, but as FANSERVICE ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE. Joystiq is just giving Halo FANS a heads up (whether it be because they're fans themsleves, or they're just catering to a sect, I can't tell).

1up, also comprised of avid and very vocal Halo fans, also have posted this as news.

Very few developers provide the type of fan service Bungie does. As such, your obviously not going to see these types of posts (or this many posts) about many other games. These tiny, incremental bits of info go a long way in alleviating the long wait that is often accompanied by one of their upcoming titles.

Don't like Halo? Graze of over the damn post and do something more constructive with your sad, prepubertal lives.

Joystiq, much props on ignoring the constant idiocy that spawns from your very fanbase. Keep doing what you do. The integrity of the comments sections have gone to shit, but at least the posts still keep me interested.

Guys relax, other people use the internet too. This is
the type of
thing that makes Halo great. They pay alot of attention to detail and
keep everyone in the know about gameplay changes/additions they make
(thanks Frankie!). If you are familiar with the Halo community you
know they are not susceptible to change. People still complain about
gameplay changes made from Halo to Halo 2. I have personally spent
more time playing Halo 2 than I have any other game and I like to
know and am excited for any changes they make for Halo 3.

Excuse my editorial laugh, [ha] but why is Bungie talking about twist rates when they haven't identified the weight and composition of the projectile?

The twist depends on both, so stating they improved the barrel by utilizing a 7 twist is meaningless.

BTW, standard twist in a 7.62 NATO (which is the rifle's apparent chambering) is a 10 or 11. Most .308WIN (equivalent to the 7.62 NATO)competitors use a 11-14 twist on projos weighing 110-210grs

A 1:7 twist rate is WAY too fast for the caliber unless these are 300-400gr bullets. But they can't have a 2,950 fps muzzle velocity if the bullets are over 150grs.

I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a *snort* magic bullet or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

I see Tondog has been to the future. I would kindly ask that he inform us of the next titles that Bungie will be working on [i.e., Halo Zero?]. Bungie did produce 3 installments of Marathon prior to doing the Halo project, so I think your comment is a little presumptuous.

Also, Tondog, all that information you would prefer to not know can be found in the various books on the Halo Universe, more or less.

This is news to many people -- several million since the Halo franchise hit the Xbox. No other console FPS gets that same sort of attention. You can claim that Halo is overrated, but you will not find a better FPS style genre for its time period (in regards to critic reviews, sales, gameplay, and longevity). I look forward to more articles regarding Halo 3 like many, many others do. Please skip these posts in the coming months.

Footpounds, considering the lack of information, it would appear that the 1 in 7 twist could be feasible. We just don't know all the details at the moment (including future tech).

Hello,

I do have to step in now: Footpounds, you're retarded... How long did it take you to search for those specs? Future weapons is a good show, but you did not have to steal their info...

Anyone else remember that this (Halo 1,2,3) is NOT happening today? It's the FUTURE... Are you going to start going off on the way that MC's health regens now? WTF... Get real and grow up, IT'S A GAME. STOP ARGUING. Some people are waiting for this, quit bad mouthing it. Everyone needs to chill.

As far as I see it, I believe that the Joystiq crew reports on this stuff because it's actual gaming news... when's the last time your favorite game actually thought 1 second about making 'realistic' specs for their weapons? And I'm not talking WWI or WWII games, their a dime a dozen...

Just a M*crosoft opinion...

@ You Assholes who think you're so smart and know everything (4, 16, 26):

From Webster's:

Main Entry: clip
Function: noun
1 : any of various devices that grip, clasp, or hook
2 : a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles; also : a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm

Does anyone know a good Halo 3 board that isn't full of trolls?

I am excited about these new details. It will be interesting to see if this gun will have different modes of fire. i.e. single shot, burst, rapid This would frustrate me. I would rather the way in which I press buttons on the controller to dictate these actions. If I want to shoot a single shot i would just tap the button and for rapid just hold that button down. Can't wait for Halo 3. Don't hate participate.

#13 got it right.

Intentless (#25), you missed my point. I think stats are great for games like Rainbow Six, MS Flight Simulator, Gran Turismo, etc. But that's because they actually make a difference in the game and those games are based on real life. Halo is total fantasy. Are they going to start basing the aliens on real life too? It's sure gonna be a boring game when they do that!

This article mentions redesigning the cowl and the handgrip as if the game designers actually have physical constraints in their make believe world. That's ridiculous. Your virtual character doesn't EVER lose his grip no matter what. There are exactly ZERO electronics inside the cowl, because the designer never drew them.

I'm not giving my opinion of Halo as a game, I'm saying this "redesigned cowl to fit make believe electronics that weren't even drawn in the game" is just idiotic.

No I understand that. But what is so idiotic about them explaining their design choices? They changed the way the gun looks and now they have fabricated a reason for doing so... It is always important to be able to tell real life from virtual but at the same time opening your imagination wouldn't hurt either.
