"It could also be attributed as the source of PC gaming's supposed death, with hardcore gamers feeling alienated and seeing fewer traditional titles climbing up the charts and onto their hard drives."

There's no shortage of those traditional hardcore titles, or shortage of people who (allegedly) play them. There's just a shortage of people who buy them.

High-end hardware sales remain strong, so unless people are upgrading their machines to play World of WarCraft and The Sims 2--two games that don't push machines--or to run benchmarks 24-7, some people are being naughty and not buying their PC games for their fancy PC gaming machines.

Of course NPD doesn't track digital distribution, casual games not sold at retail, or MMO subscription fees. If you add those to the $970 million, you're looking at a much stronger overall PC game market. WoW alone would account for about $300 million in additional revenue, though for many players that's money that isn't being spent on other PC games.

Do guys buy The Sims? Yes. Do girls buy The Sims? Yes.
Do parents buy The Sims? Yes.

Do guys buy FPS/strategy games? Yes. Do girls buy FPS/strategy games? For the most part, no. Do parents buy FPS/Strategy games? For the most part, no.

Omg, you mean The Sims sells better than "hardcore" PC games!?!?!?! THAT'S UNPOSSIBLE!

PC gaming has about as large a share of the videogames market as the Macintosh has of the personal computer market.

In other words, World of Warcraft is Marathon.

*Yawn*
The moment PC gaming dies for me is when ATI/NVidia stop producing gaming video cards.
I simply don't care for consoles, and why should I, when I already have the best gaming platform possible. Yes, it takes upgrades and maintenance from time to time, but again, this shouldn't be a problem if you consider yourself to be a gamer.

#1's exactly right. There's a plethora of traditional games, with dinosaurs like 3DRealms, id and their imitators putting out graphical updates to Wolf3d far too often (yes, Prey could've used some more work). Ditto for the real-time strategy and, to a lesser extent, single-player RPG genres. Yesterday's hardcore gamers have probably moved on to "casual," or otherwise downloadable, games for their better gameplay and price (e.g., Armadillo Run, Half-Life 2 + free mods, Sean O'Connor's Slay, Indie Games Festival winners, etc.).
