DIY game case replacement covers

Does that Wii Sports' generic disc sleeve get your blood boiling? Has it steadily climbed your list of annoyances -- sticking out like some cheap freebie demo disc in your otherwise tidy display case? Dude, then you needs to check out CDCovers.cc. The site maintains a growing archive of video game cover art.
With a little time and care (and cash), you'll have crafted an authentic Wii Sports game case. A viable solution for the true connoisseur.
[Thanks, Jonah]

Or you could live in Europe or Australia. Sure, you get games late, and they're expensive (when they come out at all), but at least we get a proper DVD-sized case for Wii Sports.
That, and kangaroos - which are particularly tasty on the BBQ!
Chrispy @ Jan 21st 2007 3:40PM
So that's why the american console was so cheap!
Capt. Castellanos @ Jan 21st 2007 3:44PM
cash?
you can buy a white dvd case at Target for 1 penny.

i don't know if they still sell them though...
i already made my wii sports case.

Just grab an old CD case, pull out the cover and backing (hint: the black part comes off with enough force), then put the manual under the tabs on the cover. Instant Wii Sports Case. May not be pretty, but it won't require you to be ultra-careful every time you take the game out of the case.
Jonah Falcon @ Jan 21st 2007 3:50PM
Um, someone's missing the point - this is so it CAN be pretty. lol

Instead of going to that wasteland that is cdcovers.cc, whose sole existence is to rip other sites & forums of quality covers and lower the quality for their servers. If you like lowest common denominators, by all means, visit their site.
Or you can visit the site where the cover in question originated: cheapassgamer.com and the site where it is hosted: www.thecoverproject.net
PiratedTVPro @ Jan 21st 2007 4:11PM
Actually Corvin, the cover in question originated from the forums at Allspark.com, then the Something Awful forums and then The Cover Project. I know, cause I created it when no other 300DPI covers existed. Want proof? My screen name, PiratedTVPro is hidden in the UPC.
Jonesy @ Jan 21st 2007 4:20PM
Yeah we got a full sized box with the game. Just wondering though, do you in the US get your Wii points (from in store) in a full size dvd case (same as the games)?
Seems a bit of a waste of a full size case for a disposable card inside, but maybe they are for making your own packaging lol.
UnknownGuy @ Jan 21st 2007 4:27PM
I too wanted to a good case for Wii sports.
But when I opened Zelda on Christmas, it had been purchased at Zellers, and came with some worthless collectible coin. BUT it was in an AUTHENTIC WII CASE, with some Zelda picture with zellers logo on it. I took out that cover, printed off one from thecoverproject and now have a real Wii Sports Case. :)

I'm surprised by how well Nintendo treated us brits this time round. Instead of being absolutely raped, we've been cuddle too.
Our accessories cases are better than yours (any MS here, who all love to shrink wrap plastic). Lovely cardboard boxes.
WarioWare came out first, alongwith Super Probotector and Donkey Kong Country on the VC.
Full case for Wii Sports.
576i version, plus if you have a fancy TV and a good scart lead you get reverse telecine to get 576p. Phwar.
For once it's not all doom and gloom.
FatChris @ Jan 21st 2007 4:29PM
No it comes in the same kind of plastic casing that the controllers come in.
As for the cases you just have to be either smart enough or know someone that works at EB games or gamestop and they ll hook you up with a white case. Just walk in and be like "I bought a used wii game here and the case was all messed think i could get another one?" Works everytime, besides they have tons from nintendo as display cases to fill the walls.
DeeMan @ Jan 21st 2007 5:40PM
Wait, America gets those horrible plastic sandwich cases for the controllers and nunchucks?
Ouch! Nintendo's packaging here in Aust is very Apple-esque. Classy boxes, fun to open, white, and very stylish.
It makes paying $69.95 for a Wiimote slightly less painful...
Bobbyjoe @ Jan 21st 2007 5:48PM
I bought one of those Wii white dvd cases from Nintendo.com for $1.50 while I was ordering a classic controller. Printed it out on photo paper and it looks fantastic.
CYRiX @ Jan 21st 2007 6:15PM
THE ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT COVER FOR WII SPORTS CAME FROM http://thecoverproject.net/
PiratedTVPro @ Jan 21st 2007 8:23PM
No, CYRiX, I'm afraid you're wrong, like I've said earlier in the comments. Actually, the version that is uploaded at TCP is the lowest quality version of the image that is out there. Both http://www.allspark.com/forums and http://forums.somethingawful.com have the full 300DPI version, and not a version with horrible artifacts like is found on TCP.
Peter S. @ Jan 21st 2007 8:43PM
300dpi print resolution or GTFO.
Actually, I believe this one is 300dpi, but I refuse covers that aren't. There's no point in printing a cover out if it doesn't look good (read: detailed as much as the actual printed thing).
Shane @ Jan 21st 2007 8:49PM
Joystiq has already written about the cover from thecoverproject.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/a-much-better-wii-sports-dvd-case/
The back art has been changed but the front is the same.
Aprime @ Jan 21st 2007 8:51PM
Um, haven't you already posted that?
Snowcone @ Jan 22nd 2007 12:34AM
PiratedTVPro,
We are in fact hosting your cover and IIRC it was uploaded by you or someone pretending to be you. (http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=1836)
The first cover we hosted for Wii Sports, and the most popular, was created by megashock5 and very much doesn't have the UPC bearing your name. (http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=1716) Every cover on our site is in fact 300dpi so I'm not sure where you got your information that the version we have is low quality and full of artifacts.
That being said, this is kind of like revisiting a 2 month old story on a different website. I'm sure every cover site out there is mirroring all the same covers by now.
Ken Edwards @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:25AM
How many times are you going to post the same exact thing with a different headline? Really.
tiny_meteor @ Jan 22nd 2007 8:23AM
I think later today Joystiq may have an INTERESTING article about how to run linux on a PS3 or how to make your own sensor bar for the Wii.
Personally, I can't wait!

When I ordered my component cables from Nintendo, I picked up one of the white cases while I was at it for only $1. I also printed one of those homemade Wii Sports covers off the web. Putting it together with my shiny, white Wii disc case, I now have a copy of Wii Sports I can be proud of. Now I'm the envy of all my Wii-owning friends.
Thanius @ Jan 22nd 2007 2:44PM
Hah, it's times like this I'm glad I live in PAL territory (We all got the nice plastic DVD-cover to go with our copies. YAY)
duff @ Jan 22nd 2007 3:01PM
haha, PiratedTVPro, you're complaining about the cover that YOU uploaded! moron
mkoracer @ Jan 22nd 2007 4:12PM
Hee Hee, I like Welsh kangaroos the best!
Jeramy @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:12PM
ya this is what i did for the mechassault copy that came with xbl a few years ago. my ocd wouldn't let me keep it in a sleeve case. albiet a grany printout and not in a green dvd case, it still comforts me.
TheBrain @ Jan 22nd 2007 11:01PM
You can buy replacement Wii cases for 1.50 at the Nintendo online store. Also, you can get DS cases for 1 dollar if you want to make good cases for GBA games (since they have a slot for carts) or if your DS came with a game in a lame cardboard sleeve. Then all you need is a good printer (which I don't have :(, off to Kinkos or something I guess)
