DS sells 10 million in Europe faster than any other

According to Nintendo, the DS has sold over 10 million units in Europe in just under two years making it the fastest selling system to do so on the continent. As always, Nintendo reminds us that the gazelle-like selling DS numbers represent actual units sold to customers not shipped to stores. The company also said Nintendogs has now sold more than 5 million copies in Europe since its launch in October of 2005; this is more than the game has sold in either North America or Japan. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see if my neglected Nintendog has finally died...

That is a really bad headline.

Well, I got a White DS Lite when it first came out, and then I wanted to be able to play 2-player so I got a black one when it came out.
My girlfriend is so enamoured with my DS that I bought a pink one for her, I'll give it to her on Valentine's Day with some flowers and chocolates.

Bahh, gaming with a touch screen is just a fad and a gimmick. Everyone knows the PSP is the most extreme with awesome graphics!!

we're not insignificant here in europe....why do we get all the good stuff last?

PSP who??

Did mommy buy you a PSP? Seriously you can't argue with the numbers that we're talking here. The DS won the hanheld market a long time ago sport,

Yeah, it's a fad that has sold 36 million units. For comparison, that's almost 3 times the combined world-wide sales of the 360, Wii, and PS3. The touch-screen is a gimmick, but so is the Wii, and that doesn't seem to be doing too badly. Personally, I hate where Nintendo is going, but apparently, consumers don't want "awesome graphics" or the Wii wouldn't be outselling the PS3 by better than a factor of 2.

Even family members who never played a game before are buying DS's. Halo effect makes them want a Wii (ironic title huh).
Nah. Nintendo has it. But I'm not sure if this is good or not. Apple have a low market share so try measures to be the best especially with their software that only runs in OSX etc (FCP, Logic, iLife). I like the underdog for their fighting techniques. But now they're on top? I hope they still keep pushing. We don't want another N64 or PS3 after all.

Ok, 2 questions.
Where does nintendo specifically state that its "sell through to customer and not retail"?
and second,
How does Nintendow know when a unit is sold off hte shelf?
steve @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:23PM
@11
1. FTA, paragraph 2: "According to Nintendo the ten million figure represents sell through to customers, not shipped units to retailers, with 1.7 million consoles being sold in December alone in Europe."
2. magic
Butters @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:35PM

When a system is bought the serial number is usually scanned and then sent back to nintendo by the retailer.

""SEE

1) You're further away, supply, shipping, and logistics issues
2) Games need to be translated in 5-6 diff languages.... UK English, french, spanish, german, italian, forgot the 6th (Polish?)
Besides, Europe has some nice things not in US. Case in point, all the good beer is over there. Even the crap that you export to NA is still better than the finest of our beers, which AFAIK, is just horse piss with a brand name like 'Budweiser'.
Pixelbox @ Jan 22nd 2007 6:22PM
I remember thinking a while back that the DS would win the next-gen war. Looks like I'm right for the time being. It'll be a long time before a next-gen home console puts up these kinds of numbers.

You're thinking of Dutch

your right i got a black ds lite for xmas, my brother got one this month and im planing to buy my mum one since she keeps stealing mine and my brothers
Emil @ Jan 23rd 2007 11:18AM
MrKhan, games are almost NEVER translated into the Scandinavian languages, save for children's games, all-encompassing games like Viva Piñata or other rare circumstances (like The Longest Journey, which has famous Swedish film actors doing the voices).
If only our beloved Continental brethren would care to pay attention in English class and stop dubbing EVERYTHING we may not have to go through silly things like that. It's the age of globalism, stop trying to isolate yourselves like that, you only bring pain and suffering to your gamer friends in Northern Europe!
