My sister's quest for a Wii
I was rubbing the sleep from my eyes after waking up way too early for a Sunday morning when I got a call from my 13-year-old sister, Paige (pictured to the right). "How's it going?" I asked. "Not good," she said.Paige wasn't that excited about the Wii when it first came out, but sometime in mid-December the hype (and the promise of a new Wario Ware game) hit her like a ton of bricks. Since then, she's been clamoring for the hard-to-find system in a big way, constantly working the phones to nearby Rockville, Md., retailers and scanning sites like iTrackr in the hopes of catching a shipment. After a few weeks of fruitless hunting, Paige was begging me to ask my "Nintendo girlfriend" (a.k.a. my PR contact) to send her a system. When I told her it doesn't quite work that way, she told me to use my "sexy looks" to sway her. Apparently the search for a Wii had made her delusional.
I knew I probably shouldn't be encouraging my sister's compulsion, but when I saw all the chatter on Joystiq about retailers holding Wii systems for sale, I had to tell her. After poring over the available data Saturday night, we developed a plan to wake up early and stake out the most likely candidates before they opened on Sunday morning. Paige and my mom would hit the Rockville stores, I would try the retailers in my local Laurel, about an hour away (yes, I got recruited into camping for my sister. Yes, I am a sucker.)
I was just waking up and gearing up for my system search when I got a my first call of the day from Paige at 8:45 a.m. (like I said, way too early for a Sunday) . I could tell from her rough-as-gravel voice that things were not going as planned. Apparently, she had overslept her fatherly wake-up call at 6 a.m. and hadn't gotten out of the house until 8. I had told her the night before that this should be plenty early enough to get a place in line for a 10 a.m. store opening. I was wrong. By the time they hit Circuit City at 8:15 a.m., there were already 20 customers lined up for the 16 Wiis indicated by a sign on the front door. What's worse, a surly line-goer told them the nearby Best Buy had over 50 people in line for only 20 systems.
Figuring the short Circuit City line held better odds than the reportedly overflowing Best Buy line, they stuck around until 8:30 a.m. when an employee gave out exactly 16 Wii vouchers, just enough to leave my mom and sister out in the cold. Desperate, the pair decided to swing by Toys 'R' Us (which was closed, with no signs of life or Wiis) and a nearby Gamestop (where the lights and a neon "Open" sign were on, but no employees responded to my sister's pounding on the door). This was the story my sister was recounting as they rolled towards the fifth and final store on their list, another Gamestop. As the minivan approached the parking lot, Paige cut her story short in mid-sentence. "Oh crap, there's a line," she said, "and there's a sign on the door, and the first word on it is 'Wii.' I'll call you back."
Fifteen minutes later, I was pleased to hear from Paige that the store had 17 systems, and that she had signed an unofficial sign-in sheet for the eighth one (the list was maintained by the two people in the front of the line, who had reportedly been sitting there in lounge chairs since 7 a.m.). While I was happy that it seemed my sister was finally going to get the system she desired, I was even happier that I didn't have to go out in the cold and search myself (hooray for procrastination!).
Over the next two hours, my mom and sister waited in the 30 degree weather with a lively cast of characters including: Tim, a kindly 40-something man who was buying a system for his wife (and shared his blanket with my sister); Joey, a "hot" eighth grader who was there with his mom; and Michael, a "creepy" older guy who said he "owned every tech gadget known to man ... except a Wii." Alternating trips to a nearby Borders and hot chocolate from a nearby Starbucks kept the cold wait from being too unbearable, my sister said later.
At 10:45 the store manager arrived to a chorus of cheers and applause from the 30 or so people in line. The cheers faded quickly, though, when he told the crowd he couldn't open until his partner got there. By the time the second employee arrived at 11:02, the line had ballooned to 45 people, some of whom tried to disregard the now-full list and cut to the front of the line. As my sister put it "we weren't having any of that" -- angry cries of "we have a list, we have a list" forced them to try their luck at the back of the line. One desperate late-comer even offered $100 for a spot in the line. My sister's response was representative of the entire line: "No way lady, I've been standing out here for two hours. You have no idea how cold my toes are."
At 11:15 Paige's long morning was over and she was heading home with a Wii, an extra remote and nunchuck, and a copy of Wario Ware. After an afternoon full of Mii making, TV web browsing, and some Wario Ware ("It's so hard!") she said the wait was definitely worth it. When will the Wii supplies catch up with the demand? When will the madness end?

I, too, camped out for a Wii for my sister, prior to Christmas. Maryland weather seems to always take a dive when you have to line up outside for something, doesn't it?

I waited also for my six year old sister. I am thanking really hard that i should open it just to make sure everything is working properly. Since i have to go from Baltimore,MD to ATL to get the darn thing to her. What do you all think i should do
Puxel @ Jan 22nd 2007 3:56PM
Smell that? Yeah...Blind Fanboyism. I own a Wii myself, and saying Zelda is boring, is like saying Gears of war isn't pretty. The 360 is the best all-around console, but if you're into gaming, and you want a PS3, just save for a computer. Resistance is alright from what I've seen, but shelling out something close to $800, for a MODERATE gaming experience is out of the question. I like Sony, but you're a fucking tool.
Alondo @ Jan 22nd 2007 4:21PM
I am glad to hear that your sister got the system she wanted. I am unsure as to how these employees got away with opening the store late, unless this is their usual routine.
As for thbhouse, how about you lay off the bashing. It's not necessary.
I own a PS3, but won't take the time to disparage another system or its games on public websites until the moment I start seeing some checks arrive in my mailbox signed by Sir Howard Stringer.
Viv @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:02PM
I was in line also for two hours for a system for my baby brother on Sunday morning. Talk about a spoiled little kid :) I got him a ps3 for Christmas and the first thing out of his mouth when he opened it was why didn't I get a WII. With his birthday right on the day of WII shipments made it that much harder to refuse him. I've never had to wait in line for a game system in my life, this was a first. Now with all three latest sytems in the house: xbox360, ps3, and wii. It's obvious which system he likes the most. The WII was surely worth the wait when I saw the smile on his face as he opened his birthday gift. I'll admit that the graphics can not compare to the other two systems but the system is quite innovative in treading new grounds.

yes...thbhouse...i'm also a sony fanboy too...but i love nintendo too (that's why I own a PS2, PS3, and gamecube and want to buy a Wii)
even though i love sony more than M$ (M$ just sucks balls) and Nintendo (though i still love ninty)...i don't go around bashing on crap systems *cough360cough* like that...seriously people will think you're a fool and a tool like #6 said....just keep your crap to yourself cause no one wants to hear crap like that...who gives a fuck anyways...
360 sucks
elmersglue @ Jan 22nd 2007 5:19PM
Quite a good read, thanks kyle...
Oh and why must comments involving video game systems always end up with some guy ranting about his favorite of the three and bashing the rest. On top of that, they always seem to have the worst, unsupported arguments anyone can possibly slap together. I understand that games like zelda might not appeal to everyone (myself included) but you can't say it's a bad/boring game when clearly 95%+ of Wii owners as well as anyone else who's played it beg to differ(basing that on reviews). Saying Resistance is better than Gears of War is fine, i mean, everyone IS entitled to their own opinion, but then relating gears of war to a gamecube game... thats just outright hilarious and marks the point where your opinions need to be kept within the boundaries of your own skull.
Why can't people just enjoy what they have and live with the decision they made on which console to buy (like a ps3 for $600+ resistance+ tax) and enjoy the one good game the console currently has to offer instead of posting a respectful-less comment about how bad everyone else's better decisions were(buying a 360 or a wii) in order to make themselves feel better.
hahaha sorry, i had to do it, don't get mad ps3 fans, i'm only kidding.....kinda...
BUT, your days will come once the exclusives start rolling ps3's way...
Mr. Khan @ Jan 22nd 2007 6:30PM
Teh Wii is 4 queer kiddies/fairies, i mean its Nintendo, and look at those gfx, lolz
that PoS3 is 600 friggin dollars, and have you seen those load timez, lol
that Suxbox 360 is queer too, $100 for WiFi and $200 for HD Movies, why the hell should i bother, and don't get me started on its lack of gamez
If you want the REAL PERFECT next gen experience, you better go f*** yourself,
Because all of the consoles have flaws, accept it, deal with it, and keep your opinions to yourself

That was the strangest pro-PS3 post I've ever read. I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or if you work in Sony's marketing department.
For what it's worth, I (a Wii fan) completely enjoyed your post but I doubt you could create another as classic as that one. Please try again! The first one was...well...it was...just wow. Just wow.

Surprisingly, my 12 hour campout for launch was one of the most pleasurable experiences involving games I've ever had. Sure, it was cold and uncomfortable, but the wireless Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros. sessions with combinations of friends and strangers were great fun, and someone's mom picked up five large pizzas for the entire line. Human beings at their finest.

The Gears Of War Den-Den Town Sell Out
Late last week, Gears of War went on sale in Japan. If early (albeit isolated) indications are anything to go by, Gears *could* be a hit. While the title racked up an impressive Famitsu scores and sports truly impressive graphics, some believed that the game's blocky very American-style characters wouldn't fly with gamers used to more slender Final Fantasy-type heroes. (Interesting to note: There is a population in Japan who are extremely interested American games just as there's a Western segment who fetishize Japanese titles. Kindred spirits!) Though, move several million copies abroad, and bet your ass, Japan listens. While the title sold flat out at Sofmap, the Gears demo at retailer a-Too reportedly drew a crowd. Mind you, this isn't just for an Xbox 360 game, but a CERO Z-rated Xbox 360 game so I am interested in seeing those sales figs. Like I said, isolated, possibly meaningless, but in Japan, still impressive!"

I rather wait until some more games come out. I am hoping to get a Wii with my tax check, and pray for a miracle to one day get the PS3. By that time...no supply problems.
I plan to get the Wii this March. It will go in my living room (plenty of room for the Wiimote), and the PS3 will go in the den where I do most of my gaming. Likely to get that next Christmas.

I camped out for 11 hours back in October to preorder a Wii for my thirty year old brother. He has a baby and I'm still a crazy college kid. But I think I'm a good sister because I went to another few stores to buy him controllers the night I picked it up. Yes, it feels nice to be a good sibling.

Congrats on your sister finally getting a Wii. I to know the woes of line sitting. I was lucky to camp out on Wii Day (launch day) as I so warmly call it and get Wii #14 of 114# at my local BestBuy in Fargo, ND. Only had to camp for 24 hours too.
As for the cold toes.... oh yeah... I know that feeling. Even though 10 degrees isn't too bad for November in Minnesota/North Dakota, feet get cold real quick. Never warm up after your feet go cold.
As for the people bashing this thread, please keep your comments to yourself. Different people have different preferences so get over it. If you want to enjoy your own little wet dream, do it on your own time.
Anyways...
Once again, congrats on the hunt. Cheers.

Ha that's cool. I'm from the Rockville area as well. Went to rockville high. Anyways, Yeah I know all the stores you named and it's amazing that these places STILL have long lines of people trying to get the Wii and It's well over a month after it's launch. @6(Faisal): You have opinions. I have opinions. Everyone has opinions. No one wants to hear you talk about being fair, then watch you call Microsoft "M$" and insult the 360. No one wants to hear my opinions on "lol Sony, more like $ony." So shut up.
Games are different. Systems are different. Preferances are differant. Since when does it matter that someone likes something you don't. Expecially in such a harmless case, such as videogame consoles.

Did you assure your sister that she could easily have picked up a boyfriend (the "hot" 8th grader in line) with that Wii? Seriously, no 8th grade guy that's standing in line for a Wii would turn down the opportunity to date a girl his own age who also had the motivation to go wait in line for a videogame system (assuming he isn't gay, but statistically its a decent bet). She might have just passed up her future husband...
New Wii Owner (formerly New 360 Owner) @ Jan 22nd 2007 9:07PM
She worked way too hard to get one. I camped out at my Best Buy the night before the January 21st sale and got one. No phoning all over the world, no running from store to store, just sacrificed a night's sleep. The only people who got turned away were the ones who showed up from 10AM onwards. Everyone who arrived earlier got one. Those that were turned away were pretty mad because they thought showing up within the hour before the doors opened would be good enough, but there were already 50 people in line by then and they were sold out. You have to be out there long before they give out the reservation numbers. Showing up 15 minutes before they open doesn't cut it.
