There are plenty of fugly consoles out there, so which are the most aesthetically pleasing? Opposable Thumbs pipes in with their take on the best use of exterior design for game consoles. From the article: "The 360 design bores me, the PS3 looks like a grill, the SNES was boxy and ugly, the DS looked like makeup, and the DS Lite looks like more expensive makeup. The GameCube? It's a purple purse, for the love of Gygax!" The op-ed piece dubs the PS2 Mini, GBA SP, and Wii as the most awesomely designed platforms to date. Mmmm... the clamshell was most awesome. So put on a black T-Shirt and tell us which console you think has the best looking and most functional hardware.

I think the Xbox was a great design from a structure standpoint. It could probably survive a bomb blast.

The original Xbox was the worst console design I ever saw in my life, had it actually been X shaped, it would have looked cool, but it was just a massive block with an X on the top and weighed a tonne. Awful, not practical, not cool, not light.
360 looks much better, nut superbacalafragalistic, but really good. I don't think the PS3 design is half bad either, they both have curves and I actually prefer black, I'm not keen on white, I always have, but despite the colour 360 looks nice, no doubt.
Wii looks pretty simple, but its small and neat, which I like, and the neon disk slot front looks good. PS2 was okay, kinda bland, but okay, the Slimline was much better, PS1 and PSX were cool as well.
Dreamcast was pretty cool, never had much issue with Sega consoles, although I found NES and SNES to resemble boxes, plus went a horrid colour after becoming aged. PSP looks sexy, but you don't like getting it scratched or dropping it, as for DS and lite, both not bad either, bit basic again, but pretty good. I too adored SP over all other Nintendo handhelds in terms of design.

I just thought I would mention that the 360's design is actually quite ingenious. One of these comments mentioned the design being for looks as opposed to function. I actually read somewhere that the case helps with the air circulation of the system, keeping it cooler than it would be without being in the case. Yeah, thats right, the innards of the 360 actually runs cooler inside its completely closed case as opposed to leaving it outside the case (if you've ever opened up the case and left the motherboard out, its more likely to over heat like that than it would inside the case. So, basically what im trying to say is that the design is beyond just the looks, and actually helps the system stay cool. I think that alone should've had the system receive more credit in the design department, not to mention it looks really nice standing vertically next to my 70 inch Sony (not all sony products suck)... And the guide button the controller lighting up is pretty sweet too.
I'm sure someone is gonna bash this post, oh well.

I love the design of the ps3 and the 360 really, but the 360 white stands out way too much. When you add a face plate you get ubber contrast, which seems out of place in electronics. It makes me consider a black case mod each week.

@ BenW # 16 - The original XBox is very very Very dark green, not black. Hold it up to strong light.
I loved the prototype XBox "X" shape. The 360 shape doesn't do anything for me.
Love the Super Nintendo shape, or maybe I just love the associated memories when I see it. All other Nintendos are weird, in a nice way, but not pretty.
The GameBoy Micro is slick. And the DS Lite, black or white.
Never thought much of any PlayStation console although the PSP looks cool.
That is all.

I forgot to mention the dreamcast, which is quite handsome looking in its own way. But I still insist that the Jaguar was the most AESTHETICALLY pleasing console design ever(for whoever argued that it had "phone-button" controllers, this is supposed to be about looks NOT functionality). For those of you who don't know what one looks like, go here:

Now tell me that's not hot... Oh and by the way those controllers were DAMN comfortable if you had large hands.

i really like the wii, ds lite, and 360. they all look very nice.
but im not gonna lie...even though it was huge, the original xbox just LOOKED like a system full of KICKASS. i mean, that HUGE green x, and the on button. i dont care how big it was, it looked pissed off and ready to KICK ASS! i loved it.

Goldstar 3D0 looked rad with M2 64-bit hardware upgrade. Oh, that's right I'm dreaming! Curse you Trip Hawkins!

I personally prefered the original GBA rather than the fliptop version

I like how the 360's concave sides actualy lets it lay on it's side on top of an old xbox's dome top perfectly. If the 360v2 comes in black I'll gladly pick one up for the purpose of putting it on top of the child crushing xbox.

No love for the PSP?
I like the redesigned original Playstation. The Wii looks nice too.

Am I the ONLY one who thought the GB Micro was like the coolest little thing ever?

The slim PS2 amazed me when I got it. The sheer difference in size, and the fact that I can fit it anywhere make it my favorite design.
Love the Dreamcast also.

Gameboy SP & nintendo DS is the worst design I have EVER seen. Clamshell is bad for small devices!!!

Suspiciously missing from this and all the user submitted lists is the PSP. Sure, its a bit big for a portable gaming device, and definitely too big to use as a media player.
But man, there is no other portable device out that i would prefer to watch movies on than a psp. That screen is godly. (not much of a fan of those umd *&^%'s though...)

the 360 is probably the most eye-pleasing console in my opinion, the wii's design is just boring, its just a plain white box, and the ps3 kinda does look like one of those george foreman grills
