Analysts say 360 selling well in India despite its high price
Despite being insanely expensive, analysts say the Xbox 360 is selling well in India. And while no sales figures have been released, the console is said to be "ubiquitous in stores across Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore." Great, it's widely available in stores but is it selling? Is it ubiquitous in people's homes? We'll have to wait and see for at the moment, Microsoft India refuses to cough up any sales numbers since the 360 launched on September 23, 2006. But surely the above ad is helping drive sales...

Obviously all those Indians are buying the system in anticipation of Crackdown. God bless 'em!
Arno @ Jan 24th 2007 3:08PM
Great. But who really cares?
Matt @ Jan 24th 2007 3:13PM
The fact that stores are stocking the system implies that it is selling. A store owner will not purchase an item to put on a shelf if there is little possibility of selling it for a profit. The exception being for a new item which they have little indication of just how well it will sell (ie during a system launch).
Obviously without hard data you can't gauge exactly how well it is selling. However, if it is "ubiquitous in stores across Deli, Mumbai and Bangalore", then it is a good indication that it is selling fairly well.

I think you missed a couple of commas in the title. It should read: "360 selling, well, IN INDIA!"
No, seriously...
It means they sold ONE! Or may be the sale is still in progress: its "selling".
No, seriously ...
What does "well" mean here? Is it selling better than in Japan?
No, seriously ...
oh i could go on
Alex @ Jan 24th 2007 3:23PM
And Microsoft wonders why their console isn't selling. Huh. I think their marketing's improving. It surprisingly makes even less sense than their Japanese ads with boybands singing "X,X,X,X".

Great, now it is going to open up into a flamewar about how the PS3 ads made no sense and the viral marketing of the "All I want for Christmas is a PSP".
I blame the oncoming flamewar on you.

If that commercial doesn't sell you on a 360 then you must be nuts!
Seriously, marketing in india must be fun as hell. Insane folks must be gods in that field!
Rubang B @ Jan 24th 2007 3:30PM
Sony should hire the guys who made that commercial. It made me laugh my ass off, and then went "Boom, buy this product." I hate advertising as much as the next guy, but I understand their attempt to associate my good laughy feelings with their product. I feel this works better than associating my WTF? feeling I get from cup stacking with the PS3.
steve @ Jan 24th 2007 4:32PM
Cool commercial!
Except that I thought it would make a better Wii commercial because the guy shouted "Wiiii" in the middle
Avinash_Tyagi @ Jan 24th 2007 3:58PM
A company should work on a cricket game, that would go over huge in india
LunarDuality @ Jan 24th 2007 4:11PM
Cricket? You mean like this one that's already being developed?

RetroJunkie @ Jan 24th 2007 4:47PM
Akshay kumar could care a less as long as they show him the green... I'd heard John Abraham was also suppose to be in a 360 ad?
Abuzar Baloach @ Jan 24th 2007 4:52PM
yeah I supose thats true, but they should have made an Ad with Shahrukh Khan in it and should have showed people playing cricket since the new game comes out in march when the world cup starts(Cant wait to go, I live in Florida not tooo far away from the west indies)
Felix @ Jan 24th 2007 6:43PM
ROTFL, that was the funniest commercial EVER.
I want the same commercials here in NA.
Ouch, my stomach hurts.
GamaVeda @ Jan 27th 2007 10:00PM
Microsoft has released sales of about 17,000 units as of December 2006. They anticipate that to grow to over 100,000 by the end of the year.

I went back to India for the first time in over 10 years this past summer and I gotta tell you; almost every commercial is like that. Totally ridiculously funny and a lot of them tease and poke fun a lot. Marketing must be a blast.

Ali al-Xbot: "give me 360 for free"
Zhalid Z'markitupphorphanbois: "20 million ruppes and your sister!! No Less!"
Ali: "ok sister, 6 goats, and 800 rupees"
Zhalid: "sister, her friend, 3 goats and 1200 rupees"
Ali: "how bout PS3 for 360?"
Zhalid: "Ayeeee Ayeeee Ayeeee for mentioning PS3!!"
(hack slashes Ali, sister, all goats, keeps sister's friend)

That AD was awesome. At least it's memorable in a good way which is what ads should be.
Minifig @ Jan 26th 2007 11:01AM
I was also in India this past year - in October, (First time in 6 years) and I fell even more in love with Indian commercials, this being one of my favourites. I think it's a GREAT ad, it's fun and catchy.
Also, India has a growing group of middle-class 'youngsters' who have a larger disposable income than ever before, it's not so crazy to think that they are buying these. Though the prices ARE ridiculous and very unfair compared to the economy over there. I got the feeling that it was more of a "rich person" thing to have, rather than in North America where they are more common.
