Personally i really enjoyed the ending of the second. The part I didnt like was playing as the aribiter - just missing the connection you feel with MC. I think that having the arbiter as an intrigal part of the story is great but having him as a PC is not so great.

I am very surprised to hear that he "hates" the game. I could see if there were regrets, but to hate your own baby, wow. Well, Halo2 was a solid game, so if Halo3 is going to be much, much better then Cheers.

You mean an institution with a financial vested interest in a product PUBLICALLY admitted said product isn't the pinnacle of all things cool?

Color me impressed. I may actually think they are more than piss and wind when they speak in the future.

Other PR big wigs would do well to take note. They may actually learn how to slowly but surely win someone's trust.

If they'd like me to actually believe this, perhaps they should make bug catching and 'fit and finish' a priority for beta testers.

This is much opposed to the typical "ZOMG! I dun got an invite to H3 beta! Lollerskates! Time to pwn noobs!"

Is pwning noobs important, sure. You've got stress testing and edge conditions and all that good stuff. What concerns me, however, is how many H3 beta testers are really going to report the bugs, balancing and other issues they encounter on a consistent basis.

Just my two cents.

Funny story about the ending of Halo2. I hated it so much I vowed (sorta) to never purchase a MS system or Halo game. It just felt like some lame way to make you get the 360 and Halo3 because you just had to see how it ends up. To play through a game and have no ending whatsoever was very irritating. It may have been funny to Bungie, but I was not amused.

Then, I moved out a year ago, realized I didn't own a system because I'd been mooching off of my roomates for 5 years, and had to get something. The 360 was the best available, I got it, and am now looking forward to Halo3. So people really can change, or at least forget how pissed they were and get over something.

You guys know what he means. "Hate" is subjective and looking at it from his perspective, the creator, you can begin to understand what he may be talking about. Halo 3 is going to soon be coming and he likes it so much more (and Halo1) that he wishes things would have been different. Halo 2 was a great game, but apparently Halo 3 will be insanely better which is great for a guy like me.

This is a clever way to lure people like ME back who were so NOT into Halo2... I understand the 'how and why' it's so big (excellent multiplayer) but I prefer things on the 'creep' tip (SOCOM, etc) and less on the 'ULTIMATE FRAGATHON'/Unreal tip.

I'm a little shy creeping back out from the woods where I have lived on a steady diet of berries and Battlefield 2 on the PC, Ghost Recon games, Splinter Cell games, and recently Rainbow 6 Vegas... I too vowed never to waste my time with Halo again after 'finishing' Halo2.

But something smells so good!

What's cooking?!?

That is a great article, and it really gives you a feel for what goes on inside bungie.

It seems they are becoming one of the few truly great game developers in the world, if they arn't there yet.

As for the comments on Halo 2,
yeah, i did hate the ending ...
and i have a lot of gripes about the multiplayer,
(waaay too many bugs and waaay too much cheating)

but funny, unlike a couple of these commenters, I LOVED playing as the arbiter,
I really got into his character, and it let the story play out in a way you just couldent have from a one sided perspective ...

Thanks to you, now they KNOW their humility act is working. Remember, kids... You can NEVER trust PR 100% (even if the marketers are kicking ass and taking names, they're still marketers).

I've never gotten into Halo2, but I might just try the third one out. Maybe people won't find so many ways to play dirty in this one (Standbying, anyone?).

Halo 2 was fine, I think they are going a bit overboard by saying they "hate" it. The game did have some short comings, but overall, the experience was fun, which was the most important factor.

Dave, law off the caps locks. You know better.

benjamin -- if I had received the Halo 3 Beta invite, I would make it my job to find glitches and bugs, because I hate being exploited in multiplayer by people who cannot win except for distorting the manner in which the game was meant to be played (super jumping, etc.).

Oh well, guess I'll be playing Halo 2 next week for 3 hours.

This is very promising. Why? Because Halo WAS alot better than Halo 2. If the developers are able to see this and admit to it. That means they know where they screwed up, and Halo 3 should be an awesome game because they wont repeat mistakes.

Thank you Bungie, for not just insisting its a perfect game. I respect this and good luck with Halo 3.

i liked halo more than halo2.

halo was my first fps and the story really touched me. i loved the huge expansive areas and the occasional tight spots were fine.

halo2 felt like the opposite to me. it felt trapped in lil pockets most of the time. the story felt a little goofy (with the plant flood lil shop of horrors guy). i didnt mind the arbitor and i didnt mind the cliff hanger one bit though.

Halo 2 used to be good with multiplayer i used to play all the time then just got so fed up with the constant bitching and complaing and cheating....it reached a point where there was no game where normal people would talk and play and no one would use a cheat. I got so fucking tired of the little bitches running their mouths with "get owned bitch" after every fucking kill. Gears is going down that path too now with cheating but hopefully with 360 having updates and such they can elimate the cheats....until someone finds another one.

Halo 1 wins out over 2 for me as well. I'm a solo-campaign fan myself, while online is fun in bursts, with friends and not Halo2 Addicted 15 year olds. I'll wait on buying Halo3 until I hear about the length of the single player. If it's as long as 1, I'll bite, but if it's near 2's, I'll wait for it to hit the cheap bin.

They are stubborn at times (had they admitted that Halo 2 took a bad direction sooner after the games' release, I think fans would have been a bit happier; of course Microsoft wouldn't have that).

Yes, Halo 2 is garbage in so many aspects I haven't touch the game in over a year. The Halo franchise as a whole, however, is so vastly rich and promising that I can't help but to regard it and its developers with a hefty amount of passion.

I fucking love these guys.

4 - Just speculating here, but it seems that there's gonna be quite a few people in the beta program (13,000+ from the 'rule of 3', many, many from crackdown, etc). I'm guessing 50000-100000 Master Chiefs will be getting their jiggy on.

With such a large population, Bungie should get ample feedback and bug reports. There'll be enough people and situations to find numerous bugs (accidentally or deliberately), and enough people to report them. You're correct that a large # of people will not be so inclined, but IMO given this large population enough people *will* provide useful feedback to make this a very positive experience.

(Plus, If they *really* wanted everyone to be 100% devoted Beta testers, then they wouldn't be making us buy crackdown)

No other game has followed suit and I have cut down on online gameplay because of it. I used to spend every waking moment playing online with Halo 2 then hackers started hard and I dropped out... I just couldn't get into playing other games and then I realized it was because the interfaces are all inferior arcaic forms...

Bungie rocks ...

Why? They know how to talk to gamers! They give regular feeddback and commentary. They let us behind the scenes. A lot of it is (effective) PR, but I also think they just 'get it' when it comes to knowing what and how to share w/ us.

Any other studios do this as well? I was hoping that Epic would w/ Gears, but thus far the experience has been average. I think Epic's intention is to provide support to the community, but they are very closed mouth about what they are doing and what and when we can expect things.

lolz, Halo2 sucked. Halo was ok, but the replay value sucked. As well as the sucktastic controls using the xbox controller, which fps clearly doesn't belong on. Xbox should stick to its.. well.. what does it excel at? Also the stupid master chief who, for some reason, doesn't have the knowledge to use those legs of his to run around instead of trying to jackoff while going to the next location at the same time. I also enjoy the fact that he has no character, but just acts as an evil alien killer. It's like Doom1 only he looks like a vagina. I just can't wait for Bungie to screw up Halo3 after it's getting so hyped up like 2 was. roflmaololzorsaurus

The one reason why if Halo 3 sucks, it wont matter, is because the Xbox 360 is a great system, compared to the Xbox 1 which was a giant piece of crap and Halo was the only game that could save it. Meanwhile 360 has tons of great games.

Only problem with the article is that Thelma and Louise does not have a cliff hanger ending. Two women drive off the edge of the Grand Canyon in a convertible.

We all know what happened next. Splat! I think the ending to Matrix Reloaded might be a more apt comparison.

I still remember playing Halo2 on a friend's XB. The new and improved weapons, more in depth gameplay, newer game elements, continuing storyline/plot, and MP campaign mode got me into it. I'm disappointed to hear Halo 2 is only for Vista and not XP, but I may either bite the bullet and get an old XB, or in a few years be able to play it on PC when I do upgrade to Vista.

Until then, I'll stick with Halo1 for PC. And to think, having only 10 levels in campaign mode, not to mention 5 to 6 enemy types, 4 to 5 vehicles, and 10 to 12 weapons.... it having lesser of those and simplier than some of your other FPS is what made it good.

Halo 2 went downhill because of the cheating. It's still a great game and still the most fun fast paced shooter around. I don't see how that game shouldn't have gotten 90s, myself and many 'non gamer' friends were addicted to it for over a year.

Now it's started to fall off a bit, but seriously, I'd still play Halo 2 over 95% of the garbage out there.

Most likely Bungie employees are now free to state their true opinions now that it is time to start over-hyping Halo 3. They took what was a somewhat original multiplayer game in Halo and turned it into an Unreal Tournament want-to-be in Halo 2. The only reason I have for playing Halo 2 over Halo is that I am sick to death of the Halo maps. If I could play Halo style multiplayer on Halo 2 maps then it would be nearly perfect (to make it perfect they would need to replace the Pistol skin with the Battle Rifle skin so that my friend Eric would stop bitching about a pistol being the most powerful weapon).

@Derbeste,

Actually, I can see how this makes perfect PR sense, without it meaning that Bungie is sincere about Halo 2(it seems that they're going overboard in disparaging their own creation). Given that Halo 2 has sold pretty much all it ever will, putting it down so much only serves to bring up Halo 3.

totally agree with you on that. Another master chief level that ties up the storyline a bit more and some big 'oh shit!' event to get us jazzed for the next game would have made the game so much more satisfying. they really should have let us know why the covenant came to earth and then took off right awayas for the mutliplayer, with as many little problems as it has, it's still an amazingly fun experience
