Totally different theme in the game as compared to WoW. Personally, WoW doesn't interest me, but this does.

CoH/V is still my favorite mmo. If they could just manage to pump out the content alittle faster I probally would still be playing it.

Warcraft would be interesting except for 2 problems.

1. I'm sick of fantasy games, after UO,EQ, DAOC, I have no interest in yet another version of the same thing. granted WOW gets a lot of things right compared to the others but right now I prefer COH and I'm thinking about getting into EVE just because they're different.

2. with 8 million subscribers they're pulling from the very shallow end of the gene pool. they have a far higher percentage of rude obnoxious kiddies and I just don't care to deal with them. granted you find them in every game but right now WOW has the majority of them. And the relative ease of advancement means they're at the top levels so you can't just out level them like you can in COH. In COH beyond level 20 you start to get a noticeable increase in the quality of teams.

I lasted about a month with this game. If you could move a character between servers, I probably would have played longer. The guy I was focusing on was on a rather unpopulated server, and a lot of the people were douches.

First and probably last MMO for me. Got seriously boring. Online in any form doesn't really do it for me.

CoH had a great concept. Too bad the level grind gets unbelievably boring around...oh, level ten. I remember starting to play it with some friends. We were all very impressed and contemplated buying it after only a few minutes in the game. Two days later, most of my group had quit in disgust.

Hard to defend the game when it has 100K-150K subscribers (and falling). Even old Everquest has more than that. But it's silly, of course, to bother comparing it to the 900lb gorilla that is WoW.

There's a level grind in CoX? Hmmm, Task/Strike Forces, Teams, Radio/Paper Mission. It's pretty hard to feel like you been Level 30 for a few weeks. It was a different story a year or so, but the game has changed alot meanwhile.

Shout out to Guardian!

CoH/CoV is much better than WoW. With far-and-away one of the most detailed character creation systems in any MMO, it definitely appeals to me more than the "one suit of armor is the best so eventually everyone looks the same" Warcraft theme. I also like the look of the game, as the childish and oddly-proportioned characters in WoW never really held my interest.

I've played both, and though I learned MMOs are not for me CoH managed to keep me interested for almost 2 years. WoW lost me after 2 months. It's not for everyone, I suppose, but most people who play it don't complain about a grind. They usually complain about lack of different content, which this new addition will probably address (finally!).

@Psyclerk

Having 100k-200k subscribers doesn't seem like much these days with WoW's millions, but when CoH first launched almost 3 years ago that was considered a smash hit. Most MMOs get stuck in the 40k-80k range. When you ignore WoW it becomes clear that CoX is a hit for the MMO genre.

The last MMO I played was a telnet MUD. This MMO sounds like it could be fun. What are the costs? Can I get a free trial? Any other comments that might persuade me one way or another?
Cheers!

I've been an off again, on again COH fan since launch. I get back into it after taking a break every now and then. I tried WoW a few months ago and got hooked into it quickly, than grew bored with it after a month of grinding. COH and COV keep me interested because of the constant updates and tighter social elements. I'd much rather play with the people who frequent COH/COV than those who play WoW. It's a totally different crowd.

I've played numerous MMORPGs in my time, and this is the only one I really find myself coming back to time and time again.

It's a fun MMO with a nice setting. I love it and play it more than I play WOW. I can only take so many elves dancing on mailboxes before I wanna do something that feels different. You can be a superhero/villain and it feels refreshing to have those options open to me. Personally I hope they try and make more MMOs that are different from the usual fantasy model.

I wouldn't know about the American servers, but the European servers have a really good community feel to them. I've never been called a n00b, never seen a healer be blamed for the death of the party, and I've only been accused of being gay once, which is pretty much my fault for having the most camp superhero name ever created; a pirate called 'Captain Blowhard'. It's full of intelligent, slightly crazy people with a sense of humour, something I doubt that I'll see on other MMOs.

Markusdragon, I totally agree. I find that Paragon City is filled with fairly rational gamers. It is one of the most mature sets of online players that I've ever come across.

Yeah, while I would love to say that WoW sucks and CoH/V is great, it's all a matter of the people you play with. Both games are good but just fill different roles. I play WoW to feed my inner munchkin, but CoH/V to just really have fun with a character concept.

It might also be worth mentioning that this weekend (Jan 26-28) all experience points rewards are doubled, something Cryptic has been doing about once per issue cycle since late last year. So, if you were thinking about picking up the game, now's the best time to do it.

Geo: How long ago were you playing, and how quickly did you want to change servers? If you're still under Level 10 or so, it's not that big of a hardship to start over on a different server-- at least on the hero side; I'm not sure if villains have an equivalent to the "sewer teams" which rapidly rise through the first 6-8 levels, but there's nothing stopping a player from skipping Mercy Island and starting with paper missions.

Deth: It's $15 a month, and the best way to jump in is to hit Wal-Mart for the "Good Vs. Evil" edition ($30 for both City of Heroes and City of Villains, currently exclusive to WM). You get the standard one-month trial. Just a hint: Virtue is the "unofficial" roleplay server, with lots of old MUD veterans, so you'll feel right at home. Oh, and hit the forums, too.

I agree with #3, if you don't know enough about the MMORPG genre, don't report on it. Yes WoW has the most subscribers but it's not the only game it's town, just the most popular. There are many gamers that are play the MMO's (CoH, Eve Online, Guild Wars, EQ2, EQ, etc) where there are enough players to make the game viable, both for the player and the developer.

Not everyone is playing WoW (this would be akin to saying everyone is playing The Sims).

The new content sounds interesting...too bad CoH/CoV isn't. The missions are reptative - same warehouse, same enemies, but there is ice/fire/whatever instead - and grinding levels is a bore. I played CoH/CoV for about 6 months...then I found WoW and have been endlessly entertained. Granted, given the massive population on WoW, there exists a higher level of immaturity and idiocracy than in Heroes or Villains, but I would rather deal with that and play an immersive game.

CoH still has a strong player base. I played for about a year and then quit for a few months, but now I am looking to getting back in the game. You don't need 8 million subscribers to make a good MMO, and WoW and CoH are two totally different MMOs anyway. They cater to different styles of playing in totally different worlds. CoH also allows you to be a little more unique with your super hero in the way that it is character-driven, and encourages you to develop background stories (in-game plot AND your hero's background) for a fuller, richer experience than WoW can offer, imo.

CoX was really great for about a year, eventually you run out of people to beat in PvP. The main problem now is they have not changed the engine to directx so it doesn't work on vista. I quit after 15 months for more Guild Wars time, and To start playing Vanguard.

I am so incredibly tired of fantasy games.

CoH FTW. I have always wanted to live my comic books.

I don't know about transportation in WoW, but in CoH it's cool to fly, tp, superjump, and superspeed your way to things.

How is that 2nd last sentence supposed to read?

... when facing the simple truth that many players have been moved on to World of Warcraft.

I can't figure out why "been" is italicized. Is it just me? Not sure what the emphasis is there, or even if that's a real sentence. Maybe it's just too early for me.
