Wow, that's an awful sales goal. Sounds like time for a price drop.

"Hurray! We sold 10 million Xbox 360s and we still haven't made a dime!" Which is true for every other Microsoft venture except Windows and Office: Every one loses money. They will never catch Nintendo because Nintendo's plan all along was to be profitable (gasp!). Poor Sony. Not only are they not profitable either but they aren't even selling any PS3s!

MS is in it for the long haul and they have the money to do it. Looking at some of the games they have coming up, 1.6 million does seem pretty low. It might bode well for them now that all 3 consoles are out because the wii and PS3 were just speculation and I'm sure a lot of people were holding out what each console was like and wait till the dust clears to purchase one. Hopefully sales pick up for all three so developers can make more money so I, and everyone else I guess, can play more good games.

The funny thing is even if the Xbox brand can break even it will take a long time for it to get out of the 7 billion plus hole it made.

Now where is Sony's fiscal earnings? I want to see how badly they are in the hole.

Microsoft didn't enter this game to make money right away. They already own your computer so now they want your tv. I'm sure they are surprised they are making money this early but they sure are happy about it.
All the articles about exclusives for 360 or being lost for PS3 you think thats by chance? Thats good old Microsoft money being spent to get the job done.

I dont know why everyone cares about japan on the interweb. They dont like our western styles and products, why do you all love their crap so much?

Japan is a tiny market anyhow. Even the ps2, which sold 100 million +, had 20 million for japan, which means the rest of the world = 80 million. Or, 80% of the gaming market is outside Japan. What does this mean you ask? It means we dont need japan to have strong sales at all. And dont cry me a river about how we need Japanese developers to get the AAA titles. Cause thats not true. look at Gears of war and halo 3, both not Japanese made and sell like hot cakes. (and are good)

I personally cannot care less about japanese games. ever since the 3d era, their appeal has lost my interest. They have such a fruity culture and it comes across in all their games. All these MGS and FF games, bah. The only Japanese developer I actually like is capcom, and they dont seem to mind developing for American systems despite poor sales in japan (xbox 360).

So I say less focus on that 1 country, and more on the rest of the world. I love my American made system and their "online" and multiplayer attidue towards games (360). And im not even American :p

First of all, you are not Frank.
Second, here's a list of some Japanese game developers;
Capcom
Sega
Namco Bandai
Konami
Square Enix

Japan is a big deal because America crashed the videogame market and let Japan (namely Nintendo) come in to pick up the pieces. It's been a Japan dominated industry ever since.

Seriously, where is our nationalistic pride? Many people do it and I cannot fault them for it. If given a choice of supporting a two products of equal quality and value, one being American the other being foreign, I would always go with the American one. This is how a lot of people are and there's nothing wrong with it so get over it and stop being so whiny when people do. The Japanese citizens work for their money as do we and have the right to spend it however the deem appropriate as do we. I do not support MS just because they're an American company, I also love the product they put forth in the 360. Here's to hoping they make a profit on the 360 by 2008. I know they will be getting a lot more of my money as they have a lot of potential in this years game lineup. Crackdown is already preordered :)

Japan is not the major battleground for videogames anymore....its North America and Europe.....its been this way since PS One.....

Love the Japanese developers but it still boggles my mind why japanese consumers don't purchase 360s....cultural differences only go so far....and its starting to come down to strict Nationalism/fear of foreign consoles.

Its strange to think that such a technological country doesn't embrace online-multiplayer as we do....heck even online shopping??!!

Equal quality. You mean like PS2/PS3 vs. Xbox/360? Or Toyota vs. Ford/GM/anyone? Sorry, but in these categories, unfortunately the American companies can't prevail yet. Yes, they are finally getting better, but it seem marketing decisions are almost always their downfall.

Sorry for going off topic but if Sonicyouth is going to go after me I'm going to respond. Sorry.

@Sonicyouth

First of all I didn't give examples it was a hypothetical situation as two different products can never be of exactly equal quality and value. It was to make a point, but I guess if you had done a little thinking maybe you would have got that through your little head. So why you are mentioning car companies is beyond me and completely irrelevant. Instead of research try a little common sense instead and see where that lands you before you make dumb comments. Second of all, the 360 is doing much better than the PS3 so far, has more games, better quality games and many features that the PS3 lacks, vise versa of course, and in some regards is a better console. Which is better though depends on ones preference. I would prefer the 360 right now regardless of if it was an American product or not. The Playstation is almost as American as the xbox anyway as it uses an American companies GPU and CPU while the 360 uses a formerly Canadian companies GPU (former at the time it was conceived and sold initially). I did not say American products are better either so stop putting words in my mouth on I understand being nationalistic to point, and I would support my own country before another. In my ideal world everyone and country would be doing great. I have nothing against foreign products. I own a freaking Audi for christ sakes.

Now they are paying the price - their revised target is still the same, only now they have to take into account the ones they couldn't sell before Christmas. This is just too sweet...serves them right for LYING.

Back on topic though, I hope Moore's comment about Viva Pinata having legs turns out to be true. It's easily one of the best games I've ever played and hopefully, once people get over predjudging the game based on the name and the "kiddie" art style, sales will pick up. Japan matters for a whole generation of players who were raised on the Eastern school of game design. I heart my NES, and something "about" the XBox and the PC as gaming platforms always left me without games I liked to play. If you prefer Western game design, the 360 is great, though a PC is still much better at its primary genres are more suited to the keyboard/mouse combination. But there are a lot of us out there for whom that whole world of games are just lacking. And Japan was a shrinking game market....until the DS.

Letting Microsoft or ANY American company control the gaming industry would be a huge mistake. There is a reason why Nintendo and then Sony control it, and it because they at least know how to make a profit and expand the industry. If Microsoft had its way the industry would be a dead husk of FPS and sports games in a matter of years.

Microsoft is the biggest threat to this industry, just watch.

Just to clear this one thing up: Japan is the world's largest international creditor. Japan has only a population of about 130 million yet they're the world's second largest economy (behind the US with a population of 300+ million). Japanese citizens have the strongest purchasing power in the world.

It devastates Microsoft when they can't capture that market. It's devastating to any company when they can't capture that market (read: American auto makers). It forces you to make up for that loss by squeezing profits out of less powerful (purchase power) nations. Also, remember that you can't just write off a nation as a loss. Microsoft competed directly with a gaming mainstay. They won't unseat Sony overnight, but in time they will become competitive. So they have no choice but to take their lumps in Japan because it's simply not a market that any international corporation can ignore.

Just to put it into context, the reason 'profits are down' is because Microsoft delayed Vista and Office until early 2007 (instead of a late 2006 release) and offered coupons to those purchasing systems in late 2006, to receive a free or minimal cost ($10) upgrade to Vista when available. The coupon program is going to cost Microsoft 1.6 billion, which reduced profits.

Sony should be releasing financials pretty soon, so it'll be interesting to hear from them too.

The only way Microsoft is going to start moving more consoles is if they redesign it to eliminate the drive and fan noise, fix the scratched disc issue, improve its reliability, and lower the cost.

Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't like to improve on their past products. They always choose to release a whole new upgrade in order to get more money from their existing customers.

Only if you have an HD set, and even then you just get updated graphics. If you still have an SD set it's no better than the first Xbox.

You should play the Wii before you knock it. There's nothing kiddie-centric about Wii Sports, Zelda, or Excite Truck.

You are an idiot. Even with a SDTV, the graphics on Xbox 360 still look miles better than the original Xbox and considering the fact that the Wii's graphics is more or less on par with the original Xbox, it cannot even compete with the 360 on SDTV. Our per capita is more than Japan's. Taken from wikipedia we our 8th while Japan is 14th.
Our nominal GDP is the highest $13.3 Trillion where as Japan's is second at $4.57 trillion. That gives the US citizen more per person capita than the a Japanese citizen. Luxembourg citizens make the most money per citizen. But of course MS wants that market. Very badly want it. No company is going to turn down money. And to say we should be ashamed of ourselves is a very ignorant statement. To the person who said we should be ashamed can shove it. No one cares what you think.
