Wii developer: publishers wary of creating for Nintendo
Speaking to Gamesindustry.biz, Brian Dryer of Frontline Studios states that the lack of strong third-party support for Nintendo consoles can be attributed to the popularity of Nintendo's own titles. In essence, publishers are wary of competing against Nintendo games and often perceive first-party titles to be much more successful than any of their offerings. While there seems to be some truth to that -- after all, you buy a Nintendo console to play Nintendo games -- the Wii's unique controller seems to be the real stumbling block. As Dreyer says, many publishers are adopting a "wait-and-see attitude," eyeing the console's success and formulating ways of incorporating the motion sensitive controller into their games. The Wii is often viewed as the console that is the cheapest to develop for, but an invisible cost comes in the form of platform pseudo-exclusivity. A mini-game fest like Rayman: Raving Rabbids proves to be great fun on the Wii, but the Playstation 2 version, for instance, is essentially worthless. When it's the other way around, awkward controls might get stapled on to justify a Wii version. Last we checked, Ubisoft was running amok with a gas-powered staple gun.
Developing for the Wii may be a cheap(er) endeavor, but it's difficult to estimate the cost of missing out on a PS3 and Xbox 360 release. The Wii's unique interface may have bumped it out of the new-gen multiplatform category, but Dryer insists that it's the main reason his studio is working with Digital Amigos and Nibris on the upcoming Sadness. "Gamers are yawning at these supposedly great-looking games on other systems," he says. "With the Wii, we're back to the fundamentals, the nuts and bolts of any videogames experience, which simply means it has to be fun."
Right, because having HD graphics completely obviates the need to be fun.

I know plenty of people that have more fun with the 360 than with the Wii.
fightinfilipino @ Jan 25th 2007 11:58AM
here's a response to third-party publishers: stop making such crappy games and you don't have to fear! the model of just creating a Madden 2007 or NBA Live 2007 and adding on to the year is dying. people want something new. that's what Nintendo is providing.
EA and Ubisoft are *especially* guilty of this.
and while having HD graphics doesn't obviate fun in any way, *forcing* HD graphics on a market that, by the numbers, hasn't even approached mainstream acceptance of HD yet is incredibly, INCREDIBLY stupid. Nintendo did the smart thing by creating a console usable by everyone who has a TV, SD or HD.
CowboyGA @ Jan 25th 2007 12:00PM
Wow, I kiddy post from Truth to start the off topic bashing.
For the actual story, the info seems fairly obvious. With an entirely different control system, ported games are less likely to be winners. If I were developing a game, I would aim for the Wii for the cheap production costs and console popularity, but a major developer may have an easier time rehashing a current engine to make a game for the 360 and PS3 simultaneously.
fightinfilipino @ Jan 25th 2007 12:01PM
and you know what? Nintendo has sold nearly 4 million Wii machines in the space of two months, and has now made USD$1 billion in profits.
the Wii is going to be in it for the long haul. devs and publishers shouldn't have to fear; the sales are there.
Myke @ Jan 25th 2007 12:04PM
Yeah, I'm having a great time with Nintendo's new system and I play it every single day, but I'll be the first to admit that its' not for everyone. Alot of people like the old mind-set with the new controls and other love the HD graphics and insane framerates and whatnot but everyone has thier own tastes. It's like if I love chocolate and a friend of mine HATES it. I can't sit there and convince him to think my way, he just plain doesnt like it. There's nothing wrong with that, it's the way it is. I'm not going to attempt to explain how the chocolate tastes to ME when it clearly isn't the same for HIM. The Wii will be fine, the X360 will be fine, and I hope (for the sake of 360 owners) that the PS3 will be fine because without competition 360 developers will still put out "quality" games but they won't be pressured to do anything groundbreaking. Cheers

HD does obviate the need for creativity at times... which is why gamers are yawning. Publishers make the same PS2 game, and render it with nicer graphics.
Isn't going from PS2 to PS3 Gran Turismo...
...the same thing as watching the original STAR WARS with George Lucas' new special effects? How much more enjoyable is it with new CGI? Not a whole lot.
It's only CGI paint job if the controls are the same.

You know, I read this a few days ago. For the most part, I agree. You want evidence, just look at the sales charts on DS. Who is dominating those charts? Starts with N, end with O, has INTEND in the middle. Look at the charts for the Wii. So far, dominated by Nintendo. This is how Gamecube started as well. Nintendo fans need to start supporting the third parties or this will go from "being wary" to "Wii missing out again."
You can have the most innovative game in the world, but if people aren't buying it, people aren't buying it. 360 and PS3 are proven tracks on third party software sales.
Vidikron @ Jan 25th 2007 12:14PM

Ummm.. Sony nor MS have forced HD on anyone. They play just fine on non-HDTVs.
Anyway, devs will make the games if the Wii keeps selling like it is currently.

"you buy a Nintendo console to play Nintendo games"
Sorry, but that's a load of crap. That seemed to be the tagline for the GameCube which is why that system is a miserable failure. That and Nintendo releases a new title at a pace that makes snails look like speed junkies.
When I had my SNES I barely had any first party titles. I couldn't care less about Mario or Kirby or Princess Vagisaurus or Yohi. I never played Metroid until Prime, I've still never played a Zelda game. All of my software was 3rd party. And with the Wii I still have no intention of solely buying Nintendo. Definitely Metroid. Maaaaaaaaaaaybe Zelda. Definitely not Mario.
Marty @ Jan 25th 2007 12:16PM
I own a 360 and not a Wii, but I do agree to that HD is kind of just a load of crap. Most people do not have HD-ready systems, so pushing HD this and HD that is just a waste of time.
I mean, think about all your buddies who have their PS2 and TV practically sitting on a cardboard box in their living room. The world just isn't ready to all move to HD. It's too expensive, and the benefits do not justify the cost. WHy should I spend $1,000+ more for a TV just to see the image a bit clearer? That, my friends, is ludicrous.

Fact: Mario Party 4, 5, and 6 outsold (individually) RE4 on the GC .. RE4!!!
When a collection of lame mini-games outsells an award-winning, flagship game of a AAA franchise.. then you know you have serious problems.
This is why Wii gets RE Chronicles instead of a proper RE game (RE5). And, its why they get a lame-ass, on-rails, point and click Dragon Quest Swords.. instead of a full-fledged DQ game.
Why would third party devs. decide to spend the time and resources into putting a flagship game of a AAA franchise on the Wii, when its going to be outsold by Mario Party 27, Mario Kart 12, Mario Tennis 8, Mario Soccer 5, Mario Paint 7, Mario RPG 4, Mario Golf 9, etc, etc?
Now do you get it? Wii = console for Nintendo franchises... 360/PS3 is for everyone else.

Plaid Ninja @ Jan 25th 2007 12:33PM
fightinfilipino - the GameCube is widely considered a failure. You say 3rd party titles are crap. I say there are far more quality 3rd party titles than there are of Nintendo first party. Unless you count endless Mario Party & Sports games as a success. The games aren't good just because the zombified masses of Mario addicts buy them. Like the whole point of Animal Crossing, its all about collecting the complete set. That doesn't make the games good or fun. The GameCube lost 3rd party support because it snubbed online players, stopped offering higher video quality support, and was based on a media that was of far lower storage capacity than DVD. Besides being a followup to the N64 (what a disaster) there was a lot about the GameCube that seemed to say we don't need anyone else to develop for us, we can do it on our own. And then Nintendo dropped the ball and made very little software for it.
So what happens when they FINALLY get a good game (RE4) exclusive to the GC? Nobody has the system, and all that goodwill gets squandered. The game gets ported to their competitor shortly afterwards.
The Wii needs to be much more developer friendly, and Nintendo fans need to embrace support from the outside, not shun it.

I think it's clear that the Wii will be a second console to the hardcore crowd, and a primary console for the casual gamer. It has dual roles.
To think you can shoe-horn a lot of 360/PS3 content on the Wii and sell it is a mistake.
slacker164 @ Jan 25th 2007 12:40PM
The DS had the same problem, but once it sold enough units, the third parties started backing it full force. While Nintendo first party titles still dominate the top sellers list for the DS, many third party games have been able to do very well too. If the Wii keeps selling like it is, the third parties will come. I think what will really make or break the system though will be the whether or not developers are brave enough to release Wii games that don’t use the motion functions of the Wiimote. Some of the best games on the DS hardly use the touch screen at all, and I think the Wii will suffer if it can’t support more traditional gameplay.
Evan @ Jan 25th 2007 12:40PM

Please stop with the "Nintendo makes profit!!!!" garbage. I could care less. Nintendo was profitable with the Gamecube as you all love to bring up every time this subject comes up. As a former Gamecube owner, their profitability did little to help through the constant drought of games. I played primarily Nintendo and Capcom games on that system. If that situation repeats itself, no matter how profitable the Wii becomes for Nintendo, it will still be a failure for gamers. After all, what would you rather have, a profitable Nintendo or lots of great games from a multitude of 3rd party developers? If you answer a profitable Nintendo, you are not a gamer and should really be investing in the company rather than playing their games.

These developers blaming Nintendo for their titles not selling need to learn some history.
Back in the days of the NES, Genesis, and SNES, the 1st parties (Both Nintendo AND Sega) AS WELL AS the 3rd parties were ALL making awesome games. Konami, Capcom, Broderbund, Renovation, Technosoft, Vic Tokai, Naxat, Natsume, Sammy, Square...All 3rd parties that were making awesome games that sold well.
It's is like someone losing the 100 meter dash, and then blaming the other competitors for running too fast.

Wake up developers and bust your butt on some fun and creative games and people will buy them. I love Rayman and will continue to buy any 3rd party game given it is FUN! I never did care who made the games or their graphics. I just care about if the game is fun! I have been playing Mario 64 the past couple weeks. Yes I owned a 64 and beat Mario a couple times, but I still enjoy playing it despite how the graphics look. My friends and I have been having Street Fighter tournaments also, just like back in the day. Great fun to be had in all variety of games, people just need to stop being so narrow minded: "OMG no 1080i? I don't want it then."
Yes I have a 360 and a nice HDTV, but I am not narrow minded on what I consider fun.
joe smith @ Jan 25th 2007 12:59PM
Nintendo has always shafteed 3rd party publishers. The prime example was when they introduced the 3D chip for the SNES -- for a 3rd Party, the cost of the chip enabled carts was so high they had to charge $80+ per game. WHen Nintendo did their own 1st party games with the same chip, they charged $20 less at retail. 3rd parties couldn't compete when the platform holder was undercutting them. Then there's the famous allocation system that was designed to totally shaft publishers on 8 bit and SNES. Presumably things are better now, but htey have a lot of bad will to overcome before pubs will trust them.

Hahahaha... ahh..
In all seriousness I think creativity has been stomped on in the past couple of years. Now with the coming of the Wii, developpers lose the "same control scheme" crutch that they had become acustomed to for the past few years. So much of a crutch it had become that Sony kept the PS2 controller's shitty design for they're million dollar Gran Tourismo machine and that Microsoft remapped its controller to look like it as well.
Bashing EA for rehashing games when their controls schemes for the wii are actually successful is non-sense. Bashing the Wii when you dont fucking have one is even worst.

Well of course you're going to be beaten by Nintendo's offerings with that kind of attitude!
It's a self fulfilling prophecy - if every 3rd party never puts any games out, then of course the best games are going to be the 1st party ones!
Take a chance, developers, and not as a last resort, consolation prize game, either. I'm talking 110 Percent effort, original (not spinoff!) fun game here.
You'll stand just as good, if not better, of a chance than if you make PS3 games, because gamers are wary of the PS3, too!
