Today's hottest game video: Bomberman Evolved
Students at the University of Aalborg in Copenhagen are mid-way through creating a virtual Bomberman game called Bomberman Evolved. As shown in today's GameTrailers video, a camera mounted in the ceiling tracks the movement of two colored hats, steering on-screen Bomberman characters based on the two players' positions in the room. The process ranks among our favorite hacker-made videogame remakes, along with all of those Tetris-on-a-building projects.Watch the video after the break.

these sorts of things i always feel would be fun if it was more like you were playing on an actual bomberman like course (with like desks in the room) but the bombs and clipping rules were shown on the screen.
i'd feel like i was trying to square dance using a teleprompter if i were doing what these guys are doing with no physical barriers to see or feel around me.

This is as stupid as the Wii. If I wanted to play tennis, I would just go outside with a racket and balls. If I wanted to play Bomberman, I would just go outside with some bombs.
Capt. Castellanos @ Jan 26th 2007 12:58AM
man, grunge.
lighten up.
its just some guys havin' some creative videogame fun.
no need to start bashing a console over something that has nothing at all to do with any consoles!
DarkTetsuya @ Jan 26th 2007 1:09AM
I just wish the game supported more than two players, I mean bomberman on the TG16 supports up to 5, and don't even get me started on the Saturn's 10 player version...
Car2oon @ Jan 26th 2007 1:19AM
Worst. Graphics. EVER.
C00kie @ Jan 26th 2007 1:20AM
Yes it is fascinating, but I don't see.
Billyok @ Jan 26th 2007 1:35AM
@3
I'd point out the sarcasm plane flying over your head, but I'd rather stay inside and use my wiimote to guide a polyonal sarcasm plane over my mii's head. Fuck real tennis.
Ocho @ Jan 26th 2007 1:42AM
Man, you guys are some jaded fucks.
I thought it was pretty clever how they captured the motion essentially through color -- Low-fi ingenuity with some cool results.
PTT @ Jan 26th 2007 1:42AM
That is hot. That's like, one or two steps away from being something you'd go to a laser-tag arena to experience.
Just imagine it, little head mounted HUD eyepieces, ala the Borg Eyepiece, displaying a simplified map, and a bunch of hydraulics-lifted square columns that sink into, and become, the 'floor' when a bomb 'explodes.' The floor tiles and columns could be semi-transparent, like a disco floor, and light up different colors to show where the bombs are placed, and to indicate the blast radius (Blinky Red for bomb, yellow for 'Boom!')
Bomberman Live, that'd be an awesome and geeky lasertag alternative.
Vision67 @ Jan 26th 2007 1:47AM
Grudge and Car2oon, you are just two people that don't get the homebrew community.
This is incredible stuff here. I'm a CS major myself, so I might just appreciate it a bit more, but you can't deny the technological awesomness behind how they manage to capture and register the movements.
Now all we have to wait for is a bomberman grid with mirrors and sensors that can create holograms of the obstacles and enimies :)

sar·casm /ˈsɑrkæzəm/ [sahr-kaz-uhm] (noun)
1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.
2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark
Jay @ Jan 26th 2007 2:11AM
Does no one use sarcasm on the internet?
Is that why some people are taking Grudge seriously?
This has shaken my view of the interweb. I used to believe that people who posted comments were intelligent and thought about what they said. It is a dark, dark day. My innocence has been taken from me.
I weep.
Jay @ Jan 26th 2007 2:13AM
I wish I had spelled his name right. :(
Grunge @ Jan 26th 2007 2:21AM
Me too. :(
Car2oon @ Jan 26th 2007 2:40AM
Jeez, lighten up. Obviously the technology being used is the real draw.
Rubang B @ Jan 26th 2007 2:59AM
Whoa, did anybody else catch #11 say he was a CounterStrike major? Where do I sign up?
August Jrgensen @ Jan 26th 2007 9:11AM
Hi guys
#4 we would really much like to implement more than two player, but with the current setup we where limited to two because of tracking problems.
Soon we are releasing more info on www.bombermanevolved.com
Arglor @ Jan 26th 2007 10:23AM
ok sarcasim is difficult to relay via text, but some of you aren't even trying to read the above sarcasim. I'd say that no one is truly unimpressed regarding this...
btw love comment no. 4 and 5. funny stuff
Tyrus @ Jan 26th 2007 10:25AM
I'm kind of confused about how bombs are lain at the moment, but the cursor/bomber setup really does seem like the best way to do it with this kind of input. Way to keep things simple despite making things new again. It's kind of a pity that the Atomic Bomberman sprites were used when some of the other art (particularly the vector-y bomberheads) seem to be much better.
Shiro @ Jan 26th 2007 11:24AM
I don't want to play Gears of War, I want to go outside and take cover with a real assault rifle! Make sure to use the duck reflex!
Or maybe I'd like to sit on top of my house with a Sniper Rifle and yell "HAX!" when people find me. Then I'll stand dramatically like I'm about to end my killing spree dramatically, but then suddenly go inside my house with no real conclusion.
Shiro @ Jan 26th 2007 11:29AM
And before someone goes off on me for not catching sarcasm, I was just pointing out similarities for other games.
(Because you KNOW people actually use Grunge's logic seriously. Don't kid yourself).
Bo Hagen @ Jan 26th 2007 2:18PM
Tyrus, we didn't use the atomic bomberman sprites, we made our own for this game.
They are very similar though. But ours can do diagonal movement too!
NeoSkye @ Jan 26th 2007 3:18PM
Ooo, I want one of those! Where do I sign up :)
Engwar @ Jan 27th 2007 10:02PM
Aalborg is definetely not in Copenhagen... It is in another part of Denmark.
Tobias Telling Abel @ Feb 1st 2007 4:21PM
Aalborg is not in copenhagen, but Aalborg university has a department in copenhagen where we are studying.
