As you may remember, the PS3 has a bit of an issue upscaling 720p content . If you're one of those folks who jumped on the HDTV bandwagon early and bought a TV that is only capable of 480p and 1080i, you're hard-earned game content is downscaled to a less-than-optimal 480p resolution rather than upscaled to the yummy-to-your-tummy 1080i level. Ouch. Well, Sony is addressing the issue. Sorta. The latest SDK from Sony allows content providers to tap the hardware scaler within the PS3. But, there's a catch. The scaler doesn't impact vertical scaling... just horizontal scaling. While the added functionality, which must be coded into each game that wants to take advantage of it, will make things a bit easier on the PS3 in some instances, it doesn't quite solve upscaling to true 1080i resolution. But some improved resolution may be headed your way.
