Pachter always seems to be bullish on PS3.

I'm not saying he's wrong (the future is in the future, and the past is a big brick wall), but I am saying that no matter what bad news comes from Sony, his estimates of the success of the PS3 seem to be based almost entirely on the PS2's brand history instead of realities on the ground, as it were.

"This prediction comes in stark contrast to the words of SCEA chief, Jack Tretton, who told Game Informer that the PS3 would be "difficult to cost reduce" and would not see a price reduction as quickly as the PS2 did."

Actually, 599 dollars actually translates to 303 pounds, not 425. So Sony is just making 123 extra pounds off of Europeans for no reason.

Sony could cut the price of 425 pounds to 300 and still profit like they do in the American market. They wouldn't have to compensate or cost reduce parts of anything, because they're overcharging Europeans point blank.

So, that Jack Tretton quote is irrelevant, and really applies if they were to lower the American price, or lower the European price after it's been lowered to be equal to the American price, which it isn't.

Except that they aren't profiting in the American market, they're losing hundreds of dollars per system. You have a point though. Tretton could have just been referring to the American or Japanese prices. They certainly have a lot more room to maneuver in the European market.

It's amazing how analysts are staying so quiet about the poor sales of 360's which caused Microsoft to scale back on shipments.

Sadly the taxes aren't the same in Europe, it's not that Sony is asking more money, it's that taxes just make it that expensive.

Are prices too high? Yes. But for BOTH Fatbox and PS3 - thats why BOTH are not selling. Demand will pick up with GTA4, RE5, MGS/FF/Halo 3. By then, PS will launch the 20GB edition which is comparable to the fatbox 20 GB - and it will cost 100-120 dollars more. So the choice will be - you can have the PS3. Or you can have 120 dollars and a "similar" console - but MINUS: 1. The massive library of PSone and PS2 games 2. No multiplayer 3. The build quality of PS (funny how no news of overheating, noisy broken units that you saw with the fatbox last year) 4.Blu-ray. Notice that, for most customers, the 120 dollars (just TWO games) will seem worth it even before you reach point 4: Blu-ray. Notice that the deal seems attractive even before you reach Blu-ray - 120 dollars for a PS2 player and free lag-free multiplayer, and you get a USD1000 Blu-ray player free!!!!

UK tax rate is 17.5% That's a price of £361 minus the tax. At $1.9/£1 that's $687, $88 more than the US price.

The majority of people in the UK have no HDTV, even less care about Blu Ray. The 360 is £45 cheaper and the price is expected to drop, probably close to the £200 mark around PS3 launch time, the Wii is £245 cheaper.

The 360 has had a chance to build up some good games and the Wii has a huge buzz around it. Which the poor PS3 launch titles and the way Sony have continually shafted the UK, I could see a disaster of a launch on Sony's hands. To be honest, a disaster is what they deserve after their continuous PR blunders and the way they treat their customers with contempt

"Are prices too high? Yes. But for BOTH Fatbox and PS3 - thats why BOTH are not selling."
Ummmm as far as i can tell the XBox360 is selling thats why u know its sold about 10 million units. And yeah its been out longer so its an unfair comparison. But even on a monthly basis since the PS3 came out the XBox is still miles ahead.
"Demand will pick up with GTA4, RE5, MGS/FF/Halo 3. By then, PS will launch the 20GB edition which is comparable to the fatbox 20 GB - and it will cost 100-120 dollars more. So the choice will be - you can have the PS3."
Were on earth are u getting your info from? Theres no way the 20GB PS3 is going to cost 100$ less then the XBox (which is about 300$) and u know why? Bcuz a hard drive costs like nothing, the real proce of the ps3 comes from the multi core processor and blue ray. So theres no way its gonna fall into the 200$ price range anytime soon.
"Or you can have 120 dollars and a "similar" console - but MINUS: 1. The massive library of PSone and PS2 games 2. No multiplayer 3. The build quality of PS (funny how no news of overheating, noisy broken units that you saw with the fatbox last year)"
Point one is actually correct but it still requires pepole to hand over 600$ to play games that im assuming that they have the original console for. Also rember XBox has the Live Arcade as well. Point 2 is just silly, XBox has the most comprehensive online abilities of any console at the moment all PS3 is doing is copying it. And when (or if) a large number of pepole go onto SONY's servers it will lag 2. As for build policy dont make me laugh, the number of PS2's and PSP's that broke down are huge. Sony has the worst reputation for build policy in the console market.
4.Blu-ray. Notice that, for most customers, the 120 dollars (just TWO games) will seem worth it even before you reach point 4: Blu-ray. Notice that the deal seems attractive even before you reach Blu-ray - 120 dollars for a PS2 player and free lag-free multiplayer, and you get a USD1000 Blu-ray player free!!!!"
Like i allready said theres no way ur gonna get that price drop and for exactly this reason. Theres no way Sony can afford to give them out for free. And Bluray's only helpful if ppl make media for it something they have yet to do.

Please can Fanboys leave there ramblings to a minimum

As a abigsmurf says, remember these prices include VAT (like sales tax in the US). So they aren't as big a difference as it seems. The price difference is far better than that of the Nintendo DS.

Today's rate is 1.96 dollars per pound.

The Nintendo DS is $130 in the US (before tax).
The Nintendo DS is £100 in the UK. ($196)

Nintendo is charging you $66 extra, or 51% over the US price (but this includes VAT).

The PS3 60G is $600 in the US (before tax).
The PS3 60G is £425 in the UK. ($833)

Sony is charging you $233 extra, or 38% over the US price (but this includes VAT).

Why no price complaints about Nintendo? If anyone is gouging, it's them, right?

In this world of blogs, it's sure easy for unsupported ideas (Sony is gouging the UK) to get a lot of print without any actual verification.

Prices vary country by country due to fluctuating exchange rates. The prices Sony is giving for Europe and the UK are not out of line given how other gaming products have been priced in the past in Europe (and succeeded!).

As to Jack Tretton, I completely ignore his words given that he works for a software arm of the company, not an arm concerned with the cost or price of PS3. Also, every company claims there are no price drops coming, because they don't want customers to try to wait them out.

FIRST OF ALL, since when did European success become such a huge piece of the console-war puzzle. No offense Euro, but you guys ain't in the game quite yet. Jap and USA make the call, and Euro follows suit. Not much is gonna change that. And whether the shit does great or not I doubt it will change anyone's Euro plans. Trust that Sony could give a f*** less about selling the PS3 in Europe. Holding the system back is only giving the Wii more steam. Anyone who says the Euro-hold off was tactical is a moron.
The March release will lack all luster. The PS3 is DEAD! How much longer can u hacks argue about it? If it ain't dead it has a long friggin way to go, and the heights realized from PS1 & 2 are gone forever. The shitty software sales #'s will continue to pour in every month. Developers usually like to make money, so you'll most games come out for every system. Therefore we'll never get a clear winner.
This console war no one will win flat out. But if you have to call a winner, Nintendo has gained the most ground. You can't argue with that. Nin has come back bigger than anyone could've predicted(and No One did predict it in fact, cept maybe Nintendo).
Nope, It doesn't matter what the price of the PS3 is in Euro. Its a dead stick. Just wait.

"You know what is expensive?...

Actually, the Wii is more fun, so the PS3 is an expensive paperweight. I bought both consoles this month. I hated Resistance. It was nothing close to it's hype; Call of Duty 2 is a much more solid game all around. Nobody I've let use the PS3 likes it. They want to play the Wii or the 360.

If Sony doesn't cost reduce the PS3, less and less people will buy them. Blu-ray movies aren't that great, the system isn't user-friendly, BC isn't as nice as it seems (need a memory card and rumble controller adapter), and there won't be a decent new game until the end of the year. The competition has great games now, and will have even better games this year.

I will say this though: The Wii is not as cheap as people make it out to be. Between $30 component cables, $30 Wired Ethernet adapters, $65 controllers, and 3rd party rechargeable battery packs, this thing adds up quick. Fortunately, it provides the entertainment to justify the cost, unlike the PS3.

If both systems had been given an extra sales would've been better. Costs would've been cheaper and they could've really rode out their old systems(especially the PS2, which will probably outsell the PS3 for a long time.)
