Epic aims for Unreal Tournament user mods on PS3, 360
Speaking to Game Informer, Epic's Mark Rein sounded confident that user-created content would be distributed to Unreal Tournament 3 console players via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. Rein explained that the reason for delaying confirmation of UT3 on 360 was tied to this issue, as Epic was unsure that Microsoft's strict certification process would allow for user mods on the console. Rein admitted that "it's still a bit of an open issue," but added that "we've had some pretty clear indications that we'll be able to [bring mods to Xbox 360]."It's unclear how mods would be created and distributed for console use. On Xbox 360, given potential leverage earned by Gears of War's success, perhaps Epic could smuggle mods through XNA. More likely, Epic would convert select user-created mods for the PC version and distribute them via Xbox Live Marketplace (as a courtesy, we would hope). On PS3, there seem to be more "open" possibilities, but the process could be equally simplified.

It could just be a case of sending "mods" to your friends, but i think any console mods would probably be seriously limited compared to the posibilites of a PC mod and be resemble more of a character and level editor.
Saying that i hope it happens as it will be a massive step forward in console gaming.

I think epic will run another competition for the best mod on their new Engine.
Last time the prize was 1 million. :)

PC comes with UnrealEd.
i've pretty much made up my mind as to which version i'll be getting.
Biofreak @ Jan 29th 2007 11:41PM
haha PC is the only way, unless u cant run it on ur box. I have 2x8800gts on core 2 duo 2.4@3.0ghz and 4 gb of ram =/ and since i play quake and unreal competitive there is no other choice besides a PC version which will retail $10 less :D
Btw this pc is for 3D animation. all i want on 360 is ninja gaiden 2.

I'm not necessarily "in the know" when it comes to this sort of thing, but is it possible for someone, to, say, make a SNES emulator within the Unreal Engine? I remember reading it was possible to play Doom on the Doom 3 consoles with some mod... I've been out of the whole "Windows" thing for a while, so I'm way way out of the know. But yeah, I want some SNESage going on the 360...

Playing UT on a console equals pure stupidity. PC is the only way to go here.
"But yeah, I want some SNESage going on the 360..."
Last I heard, someone had already made a SNES emulator via XNA.

I'd get the game for PC...if my PC could run it.
Seriously, everytime a new UT comes out, I have to get a new computer! I get UT99 for Christmas. Gotta get a new computer to run it. I buy UT2003. Need a new compy! UT2007? Eff this, I'm gonna just get a 360.
UT2004 was the exception, but it was basically UT2003.
Only thing I'm gonna miss is keyboard and mouse...unless Epic decides to be awesome and let me use 'em on my 360. :D

people always say UT on 360 is stupid, but i play console games more in general. so to me, getting a whole new rig for just one game is stupid. maybe id do it if i had plenty of cash sometime but certainly not right now, as is the case. but thats just me
Fester @ Jan 30th 2007 4:24AM
UT3 on PC (as much as I enjoy my X360). I'm a heavy UnrealEd user/mapper so that (and kb/m control) swing it into PC purchase territory for me.
Most other (non fps) games I would pick up on the 360 though as the controller/large screen/comfy viewing is great.
Joseph Villalobos @ Jan 30th 2007 9:30AM
I'm very interested to see how this is going to happen.
Pip @ Jan 30th 2007 10:22AM
If Microsoft wants to play with the big boys, they need to step up. If the PS3 is allowing mods, the 360 needs to allow them. Period.
It is that simple.

Hello, that why we'll have live anywhere. I think it was Peter who had mentioned custom cars for like Forza 2 and being able to mode them on your pc oand play on your console, then again it might not have been Forza, but whatever. Who knows, they may make it so that PC gamers and console gamers can play together in this one, they're doing it for shadowrun.
The Deuce @ Jan 30th 2007 10:55AM
Forget UT3! If user-created mods are now allowed to be ported to the 360 and downloaded over Live, I want to have some of the fan-made Oblivion mods!
CoLoR HiM @ Jan 30th 2007 11:19AM
I remember when Microsoft was talking about user mods on the 360 when it was in the works. They were talking about being able to make a shirt for Tony Hawk and sell it to other for Microsoft Points. If that was the case i would have already sold 200,00+ shirts and accessories. But i have not seen anything related to it since then. It makes me mad, since i love doing mods and addons for games, but the process of getting it through certification is the biggest turnoff.
Hopefully EPIC can change their minds.
