Joystiq hands-on: Crysis (PC)

Crysis has been gathering momentum as it nears release, gathering hype like a katamari rolling up schoolchildren. The game will finally hit store shelves "sometime in 2007" according to publisher EA; after recent play-time in the game, I decided to pour a little gas -- and water -- on the hype fire.
As is usually the case, I only got a short time to play the game, and Crytek has nearly a year to make more changes; these impressions reflect only the area and version of the game I played. Still, I walked away looking forward to the final game. Does it look good? Yes. Does it look better than anything my tiny mind could imagine? Not the parts I saw. Does it feel fun to play? Yes. Do the gameplay and story hold up for hours? That's way early to call.

Crysis involves some quasi-futuristic story where you're a super soldier wearing a super suit, fighting in jungles -- maybe even super jungles. There's probably a government conspiracy, aliens are somehow involved, apparently you go into space, and a lot of other nonsense happens that the EA representative explained to try to make up for the small demo area I played. (I was cooped up in a non-super jungle for the duration of my time.)
I demanded to see the awesome DirectX 10 graphics that would make me literally throw money -- lots of small bills wadded up -- at the CompUSA salesperson to buy an GeForce 8800, currently the only DirectX 10 video card. (Or why stop with one; it's only $1,200 for SLI mode. What value!) Where was the sequence -- said to be elsewhere in the game -- with the wall of water rushing at me? Where were the big set pieces? The jungle area looked good, with gently swaying plants in the foreground and nodding canopies of leaves in the background, but it didn't look $600-video-card good.
Still, the jungle foliage, explosions, and focus effects kept me satisfied with the graphics throughout the demo. By the time Crysis ships, maybe the rest of the game -- and/or an improved jungle area -- will set the new visual standard.

Gameplay hooks me most into any title, and I eventually stopped analyzing the graphics; Crysis felt fun. The combination of fluid controls, attack options, and sense of choice may make it a rounded game.
I usually map my FPS keys over atypical letters (ESDF versus WASD), but I played with the defaults. Even without my favorite controls, Crysis felt good; I was quickly bounding around the area, assaulting enemy fighters. And the super suit added to my ego the fantasy.
With several options, including a stealth mode and a speed mode, I kept my super suit on the strength option; this setting let me leap between jungle shacks and stop enemies with my fists instead of guns. I would close in on a guy, and either punch him out with a quick hook, or toss him thirty yards away.

Near the end of the demo, I picked up a rocket launcher to fight a helicopter, so the guns also packed a punch. The sniper rifle and other hand-held guns met my expectations, and I also shot from a truck-mounted turret.
It's hard to grade the sense of variety and choice in Crysis based on the short demo, but I'm optimistic that the final game could provide lots of options. Various non-lethal approaches will apparently be in the final game, but even without using those in the demo, Crysis seemed to encourage exploration. I took time out of firefights to punch the metal sheeting off the shacks and otherwise wander around, interacting with the world.
Will Crysis be the next FPS benchmark in graphics, gameplay, and plot? It's too early to guess. But I can say that the Crysis I played still has the potential to live up to its hype.

Nuu nawt again. Fun =! Gameplay.
Second one doesn't mean anything to me, so I'm having full respect for Crytek shaping this up to be playing good instead of just a DX10 showgirl.
Icupnimpn2 @ Jan 29th 2007 9:03AM
The sequence with the wall of water rushing towards you unfortunately won't be in Crysis. It will be in Crytek's next Cry game, "Crymeariver."

Honestly, I'm just gonna throw this theory out there and I'll probably get eaten alive, but I believe that the days of the Screenshot being a ways of determining how a game is progressing are over. Any one of the next gen systems can make an amazing looking screenshot. Hell, there are some last gen games that look insane with just one frame of the game to go on at a time. I own a 360 and a Wii and probably a PS3 at some point in time but I really am starting to see what Nintendo is going for with a different direction of gameplay as opposed to just prettier graphics. Sure, Excite Truck might not be the more gorgeous game in the world, but it's certainly a decent looking game that runs at a remarkable framerate. (That and I'd be hard-pressed to find a difference in the shrubs and bushes in Excite Truck and the EXACT same 2-D bushes in Motorstorm) But those screenshots up above are just crap. They look good, yeah, but so does Slave Zero for Dreamcast....except that Slave Zero runs at about 2.8 frames per second. Screenshots are dead, and I've had too much coffee this morning, sorry for the rant.

I wonder how it will translate to 360...

LOL!! Thanks buddy, I really needed a good laugh.

personally, I think Crysis is waaaay overhyped. It looks really good but most people seem to forget that it's Crytek we are talking about. I'll wait for the final release before judging (and hyping) too early. FarCry hadn't the best gameplay IMO so let's sit and wait.
And you not only need a 600,- gaming card. You also need Vista (preferably Ultimate), a very good CPU and at least 2Gig of RAM. A lot of money just for one game. Besides, PC releases are declining and the genre-variety is very limited (20 FPS, 10 WW2 games and a handful of RPG's, MMO's and Strategy Games a year) - not enough for me, especiall with 3 really good consoles out there.

I think it looks nice....of course its no wii sports apparently...

"I wonder how it will translate to 360..."
Judging how Far Cry went through a console transition, the X360 Crysis will suck. :P
"You also need Vista (preferably Ultimate)"
Why the hell "preferably Ultimate"?
As I understand, it doesn't really matter which edition of Vista you've got. DX10 is supported on all of them.
"And you not only need a 600,- gaming card."
I bet that at the time of Crysis' release, the price drop will bring DX10 cards down to $400 or even less.
"FarCry hadn't the best gameplay IMO so let's sit and wait. "
Far Cry is about the only FPS with non-linear gameplay ever. That counts for something.
"Besides, PC releases are declining and the genre-variety is very limited (20 FPS, 10 WW2 games and a handful of RPG's, MMO's and Strategy Games a year) - not enough for me, especiall with 3 really good consoles out there."
"10 WW2 games"-I don't know where you got that idea-I am seeing a lot of WW2 shooters on the consoles, not on the PC.
A "handful"?! PC gets *a lot* of RTS, western-style RPG and MMOG releases. Simulations(including the upcoming Spore) are nearly exclusive to the platform as well. Add to that the ports of some of the most awaited releases for this year too-say, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, et cetera.
Personally, I find keeping my PC in top shape to be worth it.
uh_oh @ Jan 29th 2007 10:51AM
There's plenty of stuff on PC to play. 2007 will be one of its best years in a long while. I'm sick of ww2 shooters personally. You don't need a super high end system to play this game, i dunno why you people can't understand that. Play it in DX 9 like i will then when components are more reasonable then make the jump. Easy as pie.
Vidikron @ Jan 29th 2007 11:18AM
The graphics look spectacular, but I am not a fan of the FarCry series. Once I got beyond the initial "wow" factor of the pretty jungle scenes I found it was, IMO, a rather boring FPS. So this time around I refuse to be sucked in by the graphics and will take a wait and see approach.
Serious Kriss @ Jan 29th 2007 11:25AM
@docLEXfisti : You are very misinformed about the variety of PC releases. I would advise that you check these threads :

Hell you don't even need a 600$ card (which will in any case be cheaper when Crysis comes out), a 180$ GeForce 8600 Ultra will be just fine.

@3 - "Any one of the next gen systems can make an amazing looking screenshot. Hell, there are some last gen games that look insane with just one frame of the game to go on at a time."
A buddy of mine could make a "Screenshot" using a Pentium 3 with a copy of Lightwave, hardly "next gen". Any of those doctored screenshots aren't being generated on the consoles. I mean when your game sucks the console isn't gonna make it look any better, though I suppose someone could make a mean rendering engine using the cell processor, but with server farms now a days it's probably not a feasable thing.
That said, Crysis makes some nice looking stuff, looking forward to seeing this one, but not sure if i'll be buying. I'm falling out of love with the FPS genre lately.

ESDF is superior. Way to go, Solidarity brothter!
Mike @ Jan 29th 2007 2:13PM
Why would anyone use ESDF?
Shoulders slightly less broad than the average gamer?
DrXym @ Jan 29th 2007 2:37PM
Far Cry was one of the best first person shooters *ever* for the PC. Better than DOOM3, and in some ways better than Half Life 2. While it had sucky cut scenes and flakey save points, I don't believe any game before or since has managed to create such massive open levels and interesting open (and random) gameplay as Far Cry. It was also beautifully gorgeous to look at. Wow, I'm tempted to install and play it again right now.
richard @ Jan 29th 2007 3:34PM
lol..the guy basically said it was not that great looking....kind of a waste to throw $2000 on these non mind blowing graphics then
lollercaust @ Jan 29th 2007 4:29PM
Wow, you map your keys to ESDF... amazing you could go back to the "conventional" method by shifting your digits an entire set of keys to the left... /groan

@ Matt : Sure they've been anounced. Next time get your facts straight before trying to sound smart.

"The launch date for these cards is about the same as for when ATI will launch R600, that is, around CeBIT at the second week of March."
Ryuukuro @ Jan 29th 2007 4:58PM
It looks pretty and will probably be fun but, damn, can't they make an FPS about something else? Far Cry was so different with its subtle homages to 80s action flicks. Crysis, however, just needs zombies to be officially like most every other shooter. Where's originality when you need it?
Frankie @ Jan 29th 2007 8:49PM
EA also has this habit of "tweaking" the videos and screenshots of thier games for the glamour shots. Rarely does it actually translate to actual in game graphics.
bamboo @ Jan 29th 2007 9:00PM
It is beyond me why people waste their time making comments when they don't know what they are talking about. Thank you to the folks above that then had to waste their time correcting the others so casual readers won't be misinformed.
Crytek has said over and over this game will scale nicely and most computers that have come out in the last 2 years should handle it. It runs fine on XP DirectX9. They have also said over and over that there are NO! plans to port this over to consoles. As a matter of fact if memory servers me, it wasn't them that ported Farcry, it was UBI's dumbass fault and was done in their Montreal, Canada studios.
As far as the author of this article, why on earth are you reporting on a game without having your facts strait??? You don't go into space at all. The aliens are terraforming the island you are on, and you battle them towards the end. Also, considering Micro$oft hasn't finished with DirectX10 yet might be the reason you weren't playing on it at the show. DUUUUHHHHHHH. Joystiq, where do you dig up these bloggers?
As far as the aliens go, I am not really looking forward to that part of the story line, just like I didn't like the monsters in FarCry, and kept playing the beginning over with the Mercs. I am also not into this Bio suit sci-fi stuff, which will be part of Crysis multiplayer.
Because a lot of other people feel that way too, I am part of an mod team making Obsidian Edge 2, a realistic tactical multiplayer mod. The OE2 team is the first group of people to recieve the CryEngine2/Crysis SDK outside of Crytek, as an officially supported mod.

Note that those screenshots were taken on an ATI9600pro, so I agree with the comments above. Pretty shots do not a good game make. But they do make nice wallpaper. :-P
Silent_Shadow @ Jan 29th 2007 9:41PM
The above poster and all other supporting are completly INSANE...Joystiq you did a great job. Especialy making it clear why DX10 is clearly not a choice when making the "final decision" on playing Crysis! Which makes me wonder why anyone would want to look at an old mod from a 3 year old game. It covered gameplay, feeling, and bottom line heat of the moment purchases.
bamboo @ Jan 29th 2007 10:16PM
Once again, another poster that didn't bother having correct info. Obsidian Edge 2 is a mod for Crysis.
OE1 was a mod for FarCry.
And how did it cover "gameplay, feeling, and bottom line heat of the moment purchases", when the game is "up to a year" away. You can't make any of those judgments fully at this point, especially if as in the case of this author, you don't even know the facts or story of the game.
Muess @ Jan 30th 2007 8:04AM
Thanks Bamboo for providing us with some useful info.
I've been reading the comments in this section (I think a few of my braincells commited suicide in the process) and it's amazing how much crap people, who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about, can spout.
