Sony picks party promoters, fashion insiders to aid PS3 UK launch

Sony has partnered with 12 personalities and organizations to promote the PlayStation 3 launch in the UK. The strategy, not unlike the 'All I Want for Xmas is a PSP' fiasco, is to encourage the promoters to distribute content "inspired by PS3" across their own digital social networks, including personal and company websites, blogs, and MySpace. The key difference between this new initiative and the botched PSP marketing effort is an apparent transparency. "We've been transparent throughout that at the end of the day this is about shifting units," claimed Rana Reeves, a director of Shine Communications, which helped to develop Sony's latest marketing strategy.
Shine has dubbed the process the "digital echo." Basically, it's craftier and cheaper for Sony to advertise under the guise of user-generated content than to invest solely in traditional means (television, radio, etc.). Participants agree because it gives these individuals and companies an opportunity to cross-promote their own products and brands. It works something like this: design and fashion magazine KCTV hosts a PS3-inspired fashion show at the Sony-owned '3 Rooms' venue in London's East End. Afterward, guest attendees (roughly 120 in all) each blog about or distribute content pertaining to the event. In addition, KCTV posts a highlight video across its digital network, which includes MySpace and YouTube. The result: Sony extends its 'PlayStation' brand to further reaches of the intertubes. Spooky.

I think when they refer to the botched PSP marketing campaign. They mean the commercials with the talking pubic hairballs. That was meant to be edgy

lol i went to woolworths woodgreen and tried on that blue foam wig in england

So is that how people dress in the UK?

Nothing new, just a different approach. Nintendo goes after families, Sony goes after hipsters and clubbers. Or whatever they call them in the UK. Other companies have been doing this sort of stuff for years, you think those hot girls at the clubs downtown really like Bacardi, and you, that much?
Agent MOO @ Jan 30th 2007 1:38PM
I know it's a different market... but I can't picture this campaign helping the brand.
HotShotX @ Jan 30th 2007 1:43PM
I'm sorry, but when did...
"Being Fucking Retarded" = "Many Units Sold"
Here's a better marketing campaign from day one:
"Here's our system, this is what it can do, it's easy and cost efficient to code games for, it's main focus is gaming, not fighting a format war, and we won't half-ass or lie about half the shit we're telling you now come launch day."

Perhaps an even more innovative approach would have been to come out with a cost-effective, high-quality, digital entertainment platform. That might have helped move some units.
Flit @ Jan 30th 2007 1:44PM
The internets are becoming one big marketing ploy. I honestly wonder how many commentors (or posters) on joystiq are actually people, and not just astroturf. I wonder if PS3 has actually sold any units, or have they just been "bought" by astroturfers who then come on joystiq and talk about how great it is to have one....
Risky @ Jan 30th 2007 6:38PM
Gamers don't look like that. Gamers look like the guys I see in gamestop. Guys that are balding, fat, and have neckbeards.
OMGIOWNZ @ Jan 30th 2007 1:50PM
I HATE SONY!!
THEY ARE SO RETARDED! THEY WILL GO BANKRUPED BECAUSE OF THE PS3! MICROSOFT SHOULD JUST BUY SONY RIGHT NOW! AND PUT AN END TO THE MISERABLE PLAYSTATION BRAND!
Microsoft is just so much better than anything! I love my 360 it has so many great games and has much better graphics than any system in excistence! SONY MUST DIE!

Marty @ Jan 30th 2007 1:52PM
What a bunch of sell-outs.
Farseer @ Jan 30th 2007 1:56PM
LOL!!
I definitely love the guy with the plastic gun; he needs to be the next Sony Mascot.
Sega has Sonic
Nintendo has Mario
Sony has Total Douchebag
Marty @ Jan 30th 2007 1:57PM
BTW, that dude in the middle looks a lot like Napoleon Dynamite's gansta brother.
Jonathan @ Jan 30th 2007 2:04PM
If I worked for Nintendo (or even Sony or Microsoft for that matter) I don't think I could keep quiet about it.
I'd be all geeked out like "ZOMFG I WORK FOR NINTENDO!!!!!111"
If I worked for Sony, I'd request to work in their big building in Tokyo's Ginza district. Last time I was there (Jan 2005), they had all these cute Sony girls in little uniforms, one of them showing me how great the new Sony music player was (didn't have the heart to tell her I just bought an iPod about 2 hours before) ^_^
If I worked for Microsoft, I'd probably make bucketloads of money and then just go retire in Vegas

What the fuck? Do they thing people in the UK are retarded or something?
Agent MOO @ Jan 30th 2007 2:26PM
It's the two tiered approach to europe...
"This is living"
"This is living... on drugs"
samfish @ Jan 30th 2007 2:37PM
Man, Sony just doesn't learn, do they?
Actual buzz (a la the Wii and 360 last year) will travel LIGHT YEARS beyond what...Corporate Buzz could ever hope to.
The hipsters they're hoping to appeal aren't very hip if they fall for such a stupid ploy.
HappyJack @ Jan 30th 2007 3:06PM
ehhhhh....that red-faced thing is tres scary.
I agree with the earlier poster. Sony will definitely go 'bankruped'.
Campion @ Jan 30th 2007 3:34PM
This sounds exciting! Perhaps someone will produce a funky fresh rap video!
Dave @ Jan 30th 2007 4:00PM
The PS3 is so crappy I almost want it.
subsonicwave @ Jan 30th 2007 4:12PM
desperation. this 360 convert still won't get sucked into this shit
Crono @ Jan 30th 2007 4:43PM
Hey, Sony fanboys.
You see these 3 morons here.
This is what sony thinks of when they think "playstation customers"
They think these guys will be able to identify with their target audience and sell more consoles.
Are you insulted yet? Why not? Are you really willing to throw the equivalent of 600 dollars (or more) at people who think of you this way?
This is why I will NEVER buy another sony product.
otisgibbon @ Jan 30th 2007 4:54PM
Sony's new mascot: The total Douche bag. Lol that's great.
he could be Daryl the total douche bag and they'd make games about him where he just sits and eats chips.
bmac @ Jan 30th 2007 7:32PM
Wait... do people here actually believe the above graphic was picked out by sony as part of this? I'm pretty sure that was a joystiq choice...
Farseer @ Jan 30th 2007 8:02PM
@bmac
You're right - Joystiq picked those, and they were being really nice in doing so... check out other pics from the "PS3 Fashion Show":

I especially like these guys:
http://tatu.promotemy.biz/kctv_events/playstation3/images/7.jpg
If these guys don't win the WTF award, then...
Farseer @ Jan 30th 2007 8:19PM
Like Chrono(#21) said, the advertising chosen by Sony lately makes me seriously doubt if they have completely lost sight of their target demographic. Either that, or the actual demographic has changed. If that is the case, then I'll be glad to hang on to my $5-600.
Slaziman @ Jan 31st 2007 9:11AM
HOLY SHIT FARSEER
HOLY SHIT SONY
WHAT THE FUCK??
Man if this is a "PS3 inspired" fashion show, and those... WTFPEOPLE... are what it inspires, then I'LL BE DAMNED if I spend 425 pounds on it.
wizard poop @ Jan 31st 2007 11:39AM
I guess that maybe they figure that if you can purchase expensive designer clothes and designer drugs that you have the expendable income for a PlayStation3?
