Designer
David Jaffe's latest blog entry, as vulgar-laden as usual, was a liveblog of his day at a focus test for
Calling All Cars (previously
Criminal Crackdown), an upcoming PlayStation 3 downloadable title. You won't find much in terms of new game details, but aspiring game developers could learn a lot from this manic entry.
We know that some of you out there don't appreciate Jaffe's verbose language or feel like the designer, who's probably known best for
God of War, hasn't "earned" his street cred yet, but naysayers can still walk away from this transcript with an understanding of the inordinate amount of anxiety put on game makers when they watch their projects get critiqued and criticized by various demographic representative, for better and worse, and how technical issues will vastly affect the situation.
Calling All Cars is planned for a release next month in the range of $5 to $10.

David Jaffe is the man
he knows what he's talking about.

It's cool David Jaffe is getting out there in the spotlight. Remember that MTV thing he and some other devs did a while back?
In it, he commended CliffyB for being a public figure and said that's what designers should do.
Seems he's taking his own advice.
Funny how it always starts with drunken videos at launch parties.

Hehe that man is a great comedian, his blog is awsome. Hope Calling All Cars is better than it already is.

Cool read. I dig that stream of concious style blogging for this sort of event, gets all those little things he'd probably forget/edit later. Too bad they didn't seem to test the setup beofre they started, could have possibly avoided those network problems.

The one thing you learn as a developer when you focus test games... people are stupid.
Hannibal @ Jan 31st 2007 11:52PM
That was hilarious. Despite this being a PS3 game (I don't own a PS3), I think it's going to be great, whereas I didn't know it existed before this.

I do sometimes think Jaffe is an ass, but man that blog was hilarious.

I'm so tired of this neo-developer-would-be-rockstar mentality. I've never seen an intelligent guy try so hard to be a Joe Frances-like waste of space.

He sucks , he should retire , if he doesnt the kill him.
Sliv @ Feb 1st 2007 9:09AM
Yeah, well focus testing hates David Jaffe.

Topaz and Lucky win the intertubes.

When is he going to port the game to the Wii or 360, so that he'll have the large sales the game deserves?

That's all we need...another "Diva Dev". Face it. He did nothing revolutionary with God of War and who ever told you he did was an idiot. It was a standard button masher with huge bosses and breasts. It was a game for dumb teenage boys. In fact, how so many of them ended up playing Halo 2 is beyond me.
And Nick, God of War is a Sony franchise, the same way Halo is a Microsoft franchise or Mario is a Nintendo franchise.

I guess you never got to pull off the combos? and although the game is not as "WOW" as devil may cry (he said it himself), it was a good game, and hell, its just the beginning of the franchise...
