God of War 2 videos are hack-a-licious
Showing that she isn't done yet, the PS2 shines in these videos for God of War II, expected to release in March. The first God of War was one of the most thrilling and action packed titles in memory, an amazing game in presentation and execution. After watching these videos of the demo for God of War II, which looks to bring us more of the same gameplay and fantastic boss battles, it reminds us why the PS2 was last generation's winner -- this game looks amazing! The first video sets the scene and introduces another larger than life boss for Kratos to take down. The continuation of the video can be found after the break. God of War II is expected to release March 13 and it looks like fans of the original game are in for a treat with this sequel.

Sooo, how come none of the Wii games so far look or plays as good as this? Seriously, this last gen game is looking 10x better than anything on the next gen wii.
Gavin @ Jan 31st 2007 6:30AM
This game will just be more proof that the PS2 has more staying power. MS and Nintendo have left the owners of their old systems high and dry. This is the way you do it people...keep the old system going until the price drops on the next-gen contender and use that as a bridge between systems. The same exact thing happened with the PS1 to PS2 transition. Like they say, this isn't a spring. It's a marathon.
Gavin @ Jan 31st 2007 6:32AM
Sprint...I meant sprint.
It is a spring though. Fun and bouncy!
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 31st 2007 6:38AM
OOH, Kratos is a playboy now, hes like the guy of the block :)
Thats gotta give him a one up on any other male hero character I've seen in a game ^^ Lol
alkymist @ Jan 31st 2007 6:52AM
This is nothing new. The technically most accomplished titles for a platform always arrives in the late period of its life cycle because at this point the game developers know the platform inside out.
Always hated that Kratos guy, btw
Slaziman @ Jan 31st 2007 7:05AM
Can't wait for this
Also thanks Optimus Prime for showing your hate for the Wii once again :)

fawazr @ Jan 31st 2007 7:19AM
anyone else think that moving crates over pressure switches to open gates and swinging from grappling hook points seems a little... nintendo-ish? It's like a really gory Zelda game with some metroid thrown in. I love it though. As always the boss battles make it all worth while.
Thrawn @ Jan 31st 2007 7:33AM
Not to offend the Belmonts, but what's with this pussy whip shit? Part of the reason God of War was cool was because you got in there with frakking knives and eviscerated everything.
DrXym @ Jan 31st 2007 7:32AM
I want to know when a movie of the game will come out. Unlike most titles that make the transition I really think that God of War has a strong enough plot including a bad ass central figure that it could make an amazing epic movie. Think Conan but more brutal.
Uwe Boll could direct (just kidding :)
hegemonyhog @ Jan 31st 2007 8:09AM
"Not to offend the Belmonts, but what's with this pussy whip shit? Part of the reason God of War was cool was because you got in there with frakking knives and eviscerated everything."
Did you actually play God of War?
gdub @ Jan 31st 2007 8:15AM
Can't wait for the inevitable God Of War 3 for ps3! It should make that $600 purchase a little easier to swallow. BTW, I think the god of war titles are my second most eagerly awaited games behind new castlevania games (2d that is). sotn 2 ftw!
Thrawn @ Jan 31st 2007 8:28AM
"Did you actually play God of War?"
Not one second of it, but you obviously have a sense of humor.
t_m @ Jan 31st 2007 8:37AM
that looks pretty impressivefor the PS2.. better than Gundam on the PS3, thats for sure.
Since the Wii is an upgraded Gamecube, which was suosed to be more powerful than the PS2 to start with, and easier to develop for as well, developers for the Wii SHOULD be producing games that look better than this... the reason they aren't? Who knows, except that they obviously don't feel the need to try.
rahnyc4 @ Jan 31st 2007 8:45AM
hmmm this game looks amazing graphically? all i was hearing was how legend of zelda twilight princess looks bad graphically by this site, but this game looks amazing?
i never liked this game, never will. i never knew why most people went crazy about it, maybe cause it had blood, sex, violence, thats it.
Tom @ Jan 31st 2007 9:18AM
So anyone play Spartan Total Warrior? Cause I sure know the GoW2 developers did =D
Seriously its even got the same first boss.
I agree with the above poster as well. Everyone rags on Zelda (which looked better) yet everyone praises GoW. Btw is it me or the part where he is thrown by the giant and crashes through the building into the water. The music there sounds extremely similar to that from the goron mines.
Phranctoast @ Jan 31st 2007 9:19AM
very good rahnyc4. your in the very very very small minority.
GOW is awesome, and the best game that has come out for the ps2.
Freelancepimp @ Jan 31st 2007 9:25AM
Wow I didn't think it was possible for Kratos to come across as even more bad-ass than before.
If it wasn't for multiplayer I would think single play game experiences like this would make Nextgen(or current gen depending on how you look at it) obsolete. Games like this shows that Microsoft pushed the nextgen too soon.
Fred T @ Jan 31st 2007 9:24AM
The thing that ruins Zelda TP graphically, are the muddy textures, low poly character models, and severe aliasing (the Twillight zone blurs everything to reduce this..lame).
Overall, this looks better and the characters are animated better as well.
Not bad for a last-gen game with standard controls.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 31st 2007 9:25AM
Its because it is original, not because of the gore, the sex is such a small clips its almost as if it wasn't there, and well, most games have to have a bit of violence, thats what makes them fun :)
Its not another generic shooter, its not another Zelda copy, its not another pathetic RPG or platformer to copy FF or Rachet and clank, and its not some boring racing game either. Its a fantastic game, the only other games to sit next to this are Shadow of the Collosus and Devil May Cry and personally I find this more fun to play then Devil May Cry, DMC s cool but it gets old quickly, this game keeps you on your toes, their are booby traps everywhere, enemies everywhere, puzzles everywhere, there isn't a moment in the game that you are doing something.
And best of all, it speaks for itself, it isn't an overhyped title and certainly isn't called the best game of all time like some iddiots call other "Okay" or "pretty good" overhyped game. It has a structured plot, and a cool main character. Its not a braindead shoot em up with a basic or crappy storyline, and it isn't a lovey dovey romantic RPG.
There you go Rahnyc4, thats your answer.
RDX @ Jan 31st 2007 9:43AM
Looks really kickass but I question if the story will be as well crafted as the first game. The gameplay was amazing but the way the story was told was phenomenal.
maverick_saturn_626 @ Jan 31st 2007 9:46AM
I trust the GOW devs, they have nice ideas, my only confusion is what happened to Kratos being the God of war and all, doesn't he have like Godly powers now? Or has Hades or someone cast him out back into a human?
OrganicShadow @ Jan 31st 2007 9:50AM
Well shit...since nobody has mentioned it yet I guess im gonna take the hit for this one...
WHERE ARE THE BOOBIES? Seriously...like the GoW creators said for the first one, if they're going to get an M rating on the game then they might as well throw as much "M rated material" in there to make it worth their time.
Maybe they are gone because this is a demo? Then again I remember buying the first one because of the demo, and don't remember being surprised at boobies when I had a retail copy. Hmm...
Either way if I remember correctly they were interviewed and asked weather or not nudity would be in the second game. I don't remember them saying anything that would indicate not, but then again Sony could have twisted their arm.
[shield from those who must comment about why i need to see boobies in games]
Joe_ @ Jan 31st 2007 9:51AM
I hope I will be able to play it from the PS3 as well, and it won't look blurry and all...
I've been waiting for this game a LOT,
Cheap killing is fun + the story is good
Matt @ Jan 31st 2007 10:04AM

I've wondered the same thing. It's not just that the graphics don't stack up next to the 360 and PS3, they don't even stack up next to the Gamecube even though the hardware is supposedly 2-3 times more powerful. I think Nintendo is resting on the "innovation" aspect a bit too much. Just because a game has great controls doesn't mean it has to look like crap.
RODNEY @ Jan 31st 2007 10:16AM

Holy crap, I cannot wait for this game. I loved the original God of War, and hopefully, the sequel will be just as good.
Grunge @ Jan 31st 2007 10:24AM
Zelda looks the way it does because it's a Gamecube port. Stop trying to hold it up as though it's the pinnacle of what the Wii can acheive - the reason for the low poly count and muddy textures is because it was originally produced for the 'cube.
The other reason that this game looks better than Zelda is because it takes place in mostly confined quarters. It's a lot easier to make great graphics if you know where your camera is going to be at all times.
AG @ Jan 31st 2007 10:30AM
@rahnyc4
I can't speak for GOW2 as I haven't played it yet, but the 1st game was arguably one of the greatest games of all time IMO.
It had graphics, amazing story, awesome game play and was so much fun. I think I played it pretty much non-stop until I beat it as I could not put the damn controller down.
GOW2 looks to be an improvement over the 1st and that is saying something considering how great the 1st game was!
Graphically at least, the 2nd game looks as good as many Xbox 360 games and this is on a last gen system released 6 years ago!
Imagine the possibilities of GOW3 being released on the PS3 in a few years! This game is going to have to tide me over until that game arrives.
Mali @ Jan 31st 2007 1:03PM
I'm fairly sure that GoW isn't graphically superior to most other PS2 games because it has more detail or any of that junk, but because it has a lot more subtle style and uses of graphics that make it far more subliminally cool. If you got the GoW team to spend as much time making a game for the X360 or the PS3, or even the Wii, as they did on GoW... you'd get a game of the same caliber, if not higher. Because the developers of GoW are amazing at what they do. It's not the PS2 doing all that, it's the coding that the developers... well, developed.
Oh, and GoW2 made me salivate.
Dan @ Jan 31st 2007 11:18AM

you do realize it's the developer right? you are acting like it's the fucking systems fault.
wait till later in the wii's lifetime (or shit, just until later this year), and the graphics will be much better than currently and will play much better.
fucking tardass
daddycool @ Jan 31st 2007 10:57AM
The original is the best game on PS2. If this would have been a PS3 launch title, all of this "PS3 is doomed stuff would be a different story" I'm sure I'll have a PS3 by the time God 3 comes out.

I am not a fanboy by any means, but...
"Graphically at least, the 2nd game looks as good as many Xbox 360 games and this is on a last gen system released 6 years ago!"
That could very well be the most ridiculous statement I have heard in a long time. You said you haven't played GOW2, so tell me how from those 3 videos you could come up with a solid argument about a graphics comparison.
bounchfx @ Jan 31st 2007 11:17AM
ok that was a little harsh rofl

"After watching these videos of the demo for God of War II, which looks to bring us more of the same gameplay and fantastic boss battles, it reminds us why the PS2 was last generation's winner -- this game looks amazing!"
Uhh, what? THAT'S why the PS2 was last generation's winner? Because the graphics were the best?
I think you might need to re-analyze that one, because it's pretty much untrue from all angles. The PS2 was more than likely the winner due to great game selection and a diversity of genres that the Xbox and the Cube could never compete with, not because because of anything graphical.
Szu @ Jan 31st 2007 11:11AM
Wow, the graphics on this PS2 game actually looks better than some of the PS3 games.
The_boo @ Jan 31st 2007 11:14AM
OK, lets all be honest. GoW has lovely graphics, it's got a fairly interesting story and I definetly think it's a fun game. But the best game for the PS2? Not really, aside from the story it's just another hack'n'slash game you can plow through in a day or two. It has a few simple puzzles and you can upgrade weapons, but innovative gameplay it is not.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna get all fanboy on some other game or system, and I loved GoW, but for me button mashing does not constitue best game evar.
sheppy @ Jan 31st 2007 11:21AM
I'm interested to know just how Kratos intends to change his fate. And more importantly, what happened to his brother? Is his changing his own past tied directly to his brother somehow or are they saving his weaker brother for GOW3?
MoonfirePewPEwPEw @ Jan 31st 2007 11:49AM
"Showing that she isn't done yet, the PS2 shines"
This is mildly better looking than Twilight Princess, if at all, which was supposed to launch in 2005. Hell, this looks like a second generation xbox title at best.
I bet if developers actually gave it and the Xbox a try, they would continue to shine as well.
wiikling @ Jan 31st 2007 11:57AM
"Just because a game has great controls doesn't mean it has to look like crap."
Yeah, and the jury is still out whether the Wiimote is actually that great for anything else but WarioWare-type minigame collections. We'll have to wait a little bit for the novelty to wear off and see how the "proper" games turn out. So far it isn't looking good.
I honestly don't see why I would want to play something like God of War with its zillion attack combos with Wiimote, or a fast paced action platformer like Ratchet & Clank.
Wiimote also sucks for something like "real" Tony Hawk or SSX. Both of these series were probably best played on PS2 (at least when it came to controls) thanks to DualShock's four shoulder buttons.
I won't even mention serious driving games which are best with a real wheel (which will never appear for Wii) and often pretty good with a decent gamepad too, but ridiculous with Wiimote.
Actually, apart from simple point-and-shoot-with-wiimote games Wiimote is useless and decidedly uninteresting from my point of view.
Wiimote might be usable in FPS games if the developers are really smart, but sadly the mere idea of playing FPS games on Wii (shit graphics, non-existent AI, probably no decent online play) kind of makes it all irrelevant.
Kite @ Jan 31st 2007 12:09PM
Again...AI is coded, the power of a machine has no relevance to the algorithms whatsoever.
And with that quote, I personally deem your whole opinion worthless. Because I am almost willing to bet (a tricksy thing to do on the internet) that you took 80% of your opinions from stuff you read and didn't actually try.
Also, driving games did work on wii, just dont overdo it :)
Aex @ Jan 31st 2007 12:34PM
"Again...AI is coded, the power of a machine has no relevance to the algorithms whatsoever." - Kite
I would have to disagree. The power of a machine has a good amount of relevance to the AI algorithms. A developer is not going to write an AI routine that is too complex to complete in a timely manner. A faster machine will allow a more complex AI, which can lead to a better AI than one able to be produced on a slower machine. There are also other things in a processor that can contribute to building a better AI, I'm not going into all the detail on this tho :)
Either way, I do agree with you, "Wiikling" is an idiot with no credibility whatsoever. Just, you happen to be incorrect also. Oh and, Moonfire, you are right up there with "Wiikling".
AG @ Jan 31st 2007 12:36PM
@30
This is not the first video I have seen of GOW2. Graphically, yes, it does compare with SOME Xbox 360 games. I didn't say Gears of War(which is the Xbox 360's best graphical game) but I did say SOME XBox 360 games.
The difference is in the fact that developers have had 6+ years developing for this system(PS2) so they can fully utilize the PS2 at 100%. And this is not some ported game on all systems, it is exclusive to the PS2 therefore developers can maximize their time working with this game on the PS2. This is why I am not a fan of non-exclusive games. They are never the same quality and it shows.
And yes, I have played the Xbox 360.
CuteUnit @ Jan 31st 2007 1:46PM
I am more of a Devil May Cry fan myself.. GOW always felt a little simple in it's attack processes other than the awesome little combat special kill minigames. Still I have to say the first one is my second favourite title in the ps2 behind DMC3, and it did do some things better than DMC3 did.
Those being:
The story - I'd rather hang out with Dante than Kratos by far, but Kratos's tortured story is more engaging than Dante vs Vergil. This is possibly because the DMC3 story is incredibly japanese, and I'm not.
The bosses: DMC3's bosses are GREAT because they're HARD. The hardest bosses in any game ever. But they're not gigantic and "epic" feeling for the most part. If they can somehow fuse the split second timing needed for DMC3's encounters with the God of War design's epic feel and interactivity, that game will surpass both titles.
I look forward to this game and am considering purchasing a PS2 again specifically for it.
Brian Sexton @ Jan 31st 2007 12:51PM
Kratos looks like even more of a prick now; it seems that the bad man turning good theme is heading back in the other direction. It still looks like a fun game, though. Too bad I already sold my PS2 shortly after I finished the first God of War.
SynikaL @ Jan 31st 2007 1:21PM
Why don't Wii games look this good?
I'm surpised noone came to a somewhat obvious conclusion: No Wii games have been released as of yet looking to take advantage of a similar art style.
Art design goes a LONG way in determining how well a game looks. WAY longer than a GPU, graphics engine, middleware or processing power IMO (Super Smash Bros. Melee is STILL one of the most beautiful games I've ever laid eyes upon, all becasue of a rich and cohesive art direction).
Most Wii games aren't focused on a gritty look, but on more of a rich color-centric palette, which, often times more effectually relays the casual notions of "simple" and "fun" to most people. This idea is supported by the systems current library of games. Such is how most Nintendo systems are (as far as I can tell, Gamecube did colors the best last gen).
I'm sure if GOW2 was made for the Wii (or a any other game like it), it would look even more amazing than it currently does. Hell, it would have looked much better on the Gamecube.
Anyways, the game looks fucking incredible. Stopped watching halfway though the first vid so I can experience the demo myself. Any word on distrubution methods yet?
-Kimosabae
adam @ Jan 31st 2007 1:17PM
It almost looks as good as Ninja Gaiden, on the original Xbox.
Slaziman @ Jan 31st 2007 1:20PM
Can you turn Kratos around, press a button, and see the whole camera do a 180 degree spin?
No?
That's why GoWII looks better than Zelda
Hiram @ Jan 31st 2007 1:51PM
"Sooo, how come none of the Wii games so far look or plays as good as this? Seriously, this last gen game is looking 10x better than anything on the next gen wii."
That's because the Wii is NOT next gen. Isn't it obvious that it's nothing but a redesigned gamecube?
I also agree with "Wiikling" 100%. The Wii is nothing but a sub-par poor man's system with a gimmicky controller.
