Konami announces Dewy's Adventure for Wii

The Konami Gamer's Day was widely expected to unleash a torrent of information on upcoming games, but in this case, it's but a tiny drop of water. IGN has the scoop on Dewy's Adventure, a Wii title that sees players controlling an adorable droplet of water on a quest to restore his forest home to its former glory. Developed by Konami's Elebits team, it appears to be a puzzle game vaguely reminiscent of Super Monkey Ball. It seems that cute creatures find themselves invariably hampered by devilish puzzles.
The Wii remote will have a direct influence on the environment, with puzzles hinging on rotating the levels and positioning Dewy in the right spots. He's equipped with all manner of elemental powers to aid him in his progress, though we imagine that he'll have to keep any fire powers curbed at the risk of committing evaporative suicide. The thought of the poor little guy boiling alive is ... somewhat disturbing.
Konami notes that the game will, much like Elebits, feature a level creation mode and allow players to design their own puzzles shortly before tackling them alone or with a friend.

Sounds... strange. It might be good, since we're talking about the Elebits people.

You forgot to mention the normal mapping.
But seriously, this seems somewhat itneresting, and he CAN evaporate but then condenses into a small cloud that can shoot lightning and fly.
I hope it doesn't take forever to launch though.

A Wii game, that's not a port?!?!
Harlock @ Feb 1st 2007 9:26PM
Oh, great. Another disney-game. :(
Joshua @ Feb 1st 2007 9:58PM
It's definitely interesting. The only "problem" I see with it is that it is being developed by the same team that did Elebits. It's got the same artist, the same story-book opening, and the same musical style. The graphics are definitely a nice upgrade, and the gameplay premise seems more promising that Elebits did (I never played Elebits for all these reasons), but it still is holding on to its Elebits heritage too tightly. Just seeing the screenshots, it is appealing, but when seeing it in motion, I'm not so sure.
And another thing. This is by the Elebits team, so how are they going to release another full game within one year of their first Wii game? I presume this has been in development for quite a while, and most likely long before Elebits was released.
StMadnes @ Feb 1st 2007 9:59PM
a droplet of water?? LMAO!!
anyone over 21 who plays this game is bordering child molester! Then again, isn't that what the Wii's about: bring old folks and children together??
No thanks, i'll pass on the urine droplet game.

This looks like a really good game. People need to just chill out w/ the OHH NOOOO!!! THERE ISN'T ANY GUNS AND BLOOD...ITS SUCKS!!ITS FOR LITTLE KIDS!!! IT SUCKS!!!. It is a game people, and Nintendo is doing a good thing in diversifing their library which the DS is really good at right now. They are trying to appeal to a bigger audience not just the Bang Bang Shoot'em up audience like the Xbox 360.

An interview with the developer said that they were working on it for as long as Elebits (over a year, at this point).

Sega should bring back Ristar and put him on the Wii. So many classic games being wasted...oh Sega, how you have fallen from grace.

And raising a bunch of colorful Pinatas on the 360 is any more manly?
Rubang B @ Feb 1st 2007 11:00PM
Water is stronger than piñatas. Look at tsunamis and hurricanes, versus a thing on a stick you beat to death to eat the goodies inside.
And on topic, Elebits is the bomb, but that's entirely due to the awesome control scheme. I'll have to rent this to see how it plays.
Luckydob @ Feb 1st 2007 11:03PM
Has anyone else noticed that the Wii is losing it's appeal? I mean Wii Sports is great and so is Zelda, but what's after that? More rehashed Mario and Wario? I see the Wii gaining more dust since it really lacks a valid online presence.

No, not really.
Especially when Nintendo's multi-player games and even most of their single-player games have through-the-roof replay value.

OH YEAH...the Nintendo Wii is losing its appeal at a rapid state. That is why EA is giving the Wii 15 new titles or that the Wii sold 4.5 million in the span of 3months. There isn't anything new coming out for the Wii that isn't original...like No More Heroes, Forever Blue, Disaster: Day of Crisis, and now Dewy's Adventure...man the Nintendo Wii is going down the drain...if you couldn't tell..im being sarcastic

Elebits, Scarface.
Dewey, Godfather.

Blink @ Feb 2nd 2007 12:54AM
Hah, mushiking, nice. xD
I really do want to see more new IPs on the Wii, because that means Nintendo's succeeded at bringing new life to games through the Wii, eliminating part of sequelitis. This one looks good graphically as well!
Satan's Clause @ Feb 2nd 2007 1:06AM
Rubang, obviously the "manly men" will go for the rehash. Who wants to play such a superficially judged game? I mean, we're all too insecure to be caught enjoying a cute game that might actually be fun. That's why we need the same ol' guts with online so we can prove our dominance to strangers since our counted tangible friends have no respect for our isolated, testosterone driven existence.
Yes, I acknowledge the hypocrisy of my comment.

God, don't you just love all the 13 year olds on every Nintendo article going "HAHA LOOK AT TEH PRESCHOOL GAME, LOOK AT THE KIDDIES, I PLAY TEH GAMES FOR TEH BIG PEOPLE CUZ I'M A BIG BOY, MOMMY SAID SO!"
Face it, teeny boppers. Your "mature" games are aimed at preteens like you, who are just getting into puberty and going through that "phase". Games like this one on the other hand are made so that everybody can play them, like real adults who have grown past that stage.
Paul Gale @ Feb 2nd 2007 2:00AM
Dewey’s Adventure for Wii is definitely not what I was thinking about when Konami originally told us that they’re working on a new IP for Wii, but it is quite original; I’ll give it that.
Also, I think it’s really important for developers to fully utilize the Wii Remote and Nuchuck in creative and useful ways like Konami is doing. Here’s hoping to learn more about it soon and what else Konami’s got in store for Wii.

I dont get it. Konami offers us a new IP, normal mapping, new gamemechanics. And some of you just scream "kiddy stuff why dont we get a manly bloody shooter". Plz go to an anti aggression training, or visit your psychologist. Killing people even on TV doesnt make you a man. And that constant "TV terrorist killing" like in Rainbow Six wont really improve your security. Being 37 I still dont get why shooting at something seems to be soooo import for testerone driving "man". Regards from germany Mike
Borat @ Feb 2nd 2007 7:27AM
I used to be a nintendo fanboy, but seriously, how many more zelda, mario, wario, red emblem, metroid, happy-face, Pokey with the pokey and the man games? The problem is not that Nintendo has kiddy games, is that it doesn't have enough hardcore games. I was expecting the last Zelda to be the best Zelda ever. Unfortunately, while it was an excellent game, it is still formulaic, and after all, it's available on gamecube (that's why it puzzles me that the Wii is selling through the roof; pure hype, not much else). What else is hardcore? Sadness? And where is that? When can we see some actual screenshots?
I can only hope that the next Zelda isn't modeled after FPS. I hope they make link move faster, take off the auto-aiming (which makes the games too easy), and add some orchestral DVD quality music, with a faster moving/jumping link with combos, more weapons (and different ones), longer and some originality. And while they are at it, some newer IP for fuck's sake.
The only console where I see diversity coming soon (but evidently not right now) is the PS3. Several action games, several Japanes RPGs, exclusive flying games (such as Lair and Warhawk), and even some relatively decent FPS. 360 has some "killer games", but ironically they are the same kind of games that appealed to the last gen Xbox gamers: Western RPGs, RTS, FPS, or something between those two; namely PC games. Just two upcoming Japanese RPGs "to die for", but then again who knows, since Blue Dragon did nothing for 360.
The console where I can play the most compelling titles right now is the PS3, since it plays my whole PS2 and PS1 library, lol. But again, no "next-gen" console has anything against PS2 right now, unless it was about portables, then the DS is in a great position. Not more games than PS2, but still many and yet it's a lot cheaper.
James Kochalka @ Feb 2nd 2007 8:23AM
Wii is selling through the roof not on pure hype, but on the strength of Wii Sports. It is THE killer app of this generation of consoles.
And I'm really looking forward to Dewy. I'm psyched for anything by the Elebtis team. This looks awesome.
KC @ Feb 2nd 2007 8:30AM
Wow.
This is an orignal, GREAT looking game and people are knocking it.
On a side note, Elebits is fantastic, and I expect this game to be just as good. Aside from some framerate issues, Elebits is one of the best Wii games out there. Not to mention, its a HARDCORE game.
I'm sure this new Konami game will be just as deep.
Whats really funny with poster #30, is that his idea of hardcore games can be ANYTHING.
I say a hardcore game has depth. Has a challenge. Has replay value.
Elebits has all of these. Try 100% on that game. It's TOUGH to do. Especially if you don't cheat and use a faq to locate everything.
I'm betting Dewys Adventure will be in the same vein.
Wii has plenty of hardcore games. It also has fun for the whole family games.
360 and ps3 really dont offer both.

"Whats really funny with poster #30, is that his idea of hardcore games can be ANYTHING."
O RLY? Please point out where did I explicitly (or where did I seem to imply, which you didn't get) say that?
To me hardcore games aren't family friendly games. By family friendly, I mean games such as Mario Party, Elebits, and the such. I don't deny they are FUN, but that's not the only thing I look forward to when I'm playing. NON-hardcore are games that look like they were made for pre-school kids, games that don't really require more skill (not that Wii sports doesn't), games that are really short (mini-games), games that last too little. Yes, those games are FUN, but If you read joystiq more often, you'd realize we don't play just for the shallow sense of "FUN":
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/28/fun-not-the-real-reason-you-continue-to-play-games/
Great Hardcore games to me are games that, while gameplay is great, they actually have a storyline, have nice graphics, nice soundtrack, and so on. It's not just "replay value" although it's good to have it, it's just that actually completing a "mode" of a hardcore game usually should take more than 10 minutes, as opposed to most family friendly games. Examples: Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, God of War, Resident Evil, Zelda, Final Fantasy, White Knight Story, Lair, Gears of War, Killzone, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Mass effect, Crackdown, Assassin's Creed, Halo, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Half-Life, Doom, Quake, Metal Gear, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon's Quest, Kingdom Hearts (although it is kind of family friendly, its quests are definitely hardcore), and so on. All these games take a long time to complete, and will hardly appeal to casual gamers because it requires you to be involved with the storyline, and with improving your skills whether it's FPS, RPG, RTS, Action, Stealth. These games are fun, but have other elements that go beyond the SHALLOW sense of fun, which aren't just graphics. If you don't get the idea with this, don't worry, you never will get it, nor will you get anything.
Yeah, Zelda is a Hardcore game, but Zelda is on gamecube too, and if you read the reviews, you'll see the gamecube version isn't inferior really. The marginal difference isn't worth $250 if you already have a gamecube.
What's FUNNIER is that all you preconceiving dipshits bash me and others for bashing this game for not being attractive enough for us. Even if it sounds shallow, but yeah, bash us for basically disagreeing. Kinda contradictory, and hypocritical, isn't it, wiitards? I will definitely buy a Wii, but not until something HARDCORE shows up. Here's to hoping the upcoming Dragon Quest Wii and FFChronicles are good. Here's to also to hoping Sadness is actually good. And finally, here's to hoping all the morons that actually bashed me learn to accept opinions that disagree with their preconception of the world, no matter how "shallow" or "ridiculous" they think they are.
James Kochalka @ Feb 2nd 2007 10:36AM
Elebits is way too hard for preschool kids, and I assume Dewy will be too.

"That's what people said about the DS. I work at Best Buy and we haven't had DS Lites in stock in over a month and the DS has been out for years. The Wii isn't going to suddenly stop selling because you lost interest in it."
the DS is a handheld, you're talking about an whole different market here. the DS sells because not only is PSP too damn expensive... but it's the newest update of the Game Boy.
Consoles on the other hand... are a bigger investment, people expect to get the most they can out of it. the Wii is popular now based on media hype, but i don't think they have the push to get them through this year. remember there's a certain sequel coming, and they hype is gonna be heavily focused on that in the coming months. also the three big Wii killer apps aren't coming until fall, and they are gonna be competing against Grand Theft Auto 4, Assassin's Creed, and Metal Gear Solid 4. there's also the other titles like Bioshock and Devil May Cry 4.
majortom @ Feb 2nd 2007 12:28PM
Yeah I think the summer will be the rest period. then super smash brothers will come in the fall and you wont be able to find the console again.
dantebk @ Feb 2nd 2007 12:50PM
I actually thought Elebits was a bit too hard. It was a fun game, with a fun game mechanic, but if the name of the game is "throw stuff around" then having levels where you lose if you break anything is a little bizarre. My non-gamer friends were really interested in trying it, but got frustrated with time limit and the seemingly unnecessary restrictions.
I hope they don't feel the need with this new Dewy game to add extra restrictions against the fun. Otherwise, it could be fun.

Well said. I wanted to make a post like that but you already beat me to it and wrote it better than I would have.
I remember in the old PSX days when the Sony's marketing campaign "Sony is mature and Nintendo is for kids" took hold. I was amused at how one of Sony's Tomb Raider series was presented as an example of their mature content. Why was it considered mature? Because your main character had a big boobs on the packaging and the PSX's amazing processor actually displayed this in-game with a whopping 8 pixels. It was just laughable: this big mature title was mature because it would make goofy little 13 year old boys drool.
Give me a break.
Ken @ Feb 2nd 2007 1:49PM
I love Elebits. It's a great game, and it would have been TOO easy if they didn't put the restrictions on the game. If you ask me, anyway.
But yeah, my girlfriend loves Elebits too. (Probably the only reason why she comes to my house anymore... lol). And I fully intend to purchase this game. Original games ftw. :)
Crono @ Feb 2nd 2007 2:03PM
I puchased elebits, dispite its rather odd concept, for the sole purpose of supporting 3rd parties on Nintendo's consoles. What many sony fans have said is true, there is little 3rd party support on nintendo consoles now because we, the nintendo fans, don't buy any regardless of the quality of the title.
Since elebits was the biggest 3rd party title for wii behind Red Steel (which I also own, unfortunately), I decided to pick it up.
Elebits was a gamble that I won. Red Steel was a gamble I lost.
That said, I'm not sure if I'll pick up this title. I don't want to send the message that the only 3rd party titles we're willing to buy are the bizarro ones like this and elebits.

Come on man...are you serious? You really need to go look at Nintendo's games coming out list because you seem to be mistaken if you dont think Nintendo has a diverse line up. They have 3 RPGs (Dragon Quest, Final Fanstasy, and Fire Emblem), Sandbox (Scarface, No More Heroes, and Godfather), Sports (Tiger Woods, Blur, Madden), Platformers (Super Mario Galaxy, Dewy's Adventure, Super Paper Mario), and Fighting (Mortal Kombat, Super Smash Bros. All of these are coming out THIS YEAR!!! THAT IS A DIVERSE LIST IF YOU ASK ME.
Scott @ Feb 3rd 2007 2:23AM
Where shall I tread? The "hardcore" argument? or the Wii collecting dust in the summer? Let's do both. Why not?
A game being "hardcore" is a matter of opinion. Simple as that. I look at "hardcore" games as games like Halo, and Gears of War. The "testosterone driven" and whatever else people are saying is what "hardcore" means to me, but others would have they're own opinion on that. Is final fantasy "hardcore"? To some. The 70 hours of playing, the story, and leveling characters up to some people is "hardcore". To some playing MegaMan is "hardcore". It's matter of opinion. Don't hate on people for having different opinions.
The wii collecting dust during summer? I say hardly. Summer is the time of the gaming drought (although this summer is looking real nice for the 360), so an obvious slow down will occur, and yes it's a bigger investment than a handheld, but it's just 50 dollars more than a PSP, 50 dollars less than a core 360 (150 less than the premium, etc, etc.), and I don't think hype dying down will be a factor.
The "tupperware" party article is enough to point otherwise to that. The DS lite did nothing new except look pretty, and it continuously sells faster than any of it's predecesors. With the Wii, you got these kids, these parents, and these grand parents trying this thing out and really wanting to get into the wii. Playing Wii tennis is a completely different experience than chainsawing the locust horde in Gears of War. Gears of War is awesome (admitted graphics whore) but it's not gonna get my parents to play a game system anytime soon, and it's not gonna get their friends out rushing to get a 360 like it would a Wii. These are people, I might add, aren't buying toys for their kids for christmas, but for themselves. I don't even see the DS doing that.
Collect dust? I doubt it. Slow Down? Sure, if you consider selling out slower than usual a slow down. And when Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, and Metroid come out it's only going to add fuel to the fire.
Only time will tell of course.
bm @ Feb 4th 2007 4:35AM

We're bashing you for being a little teeny retard judging a game on its looks. Remember Super Monkey Ball? I think that game probably looks even more "kiddy" than this. Pastel-colored monkeys with pink skirts and pacifiers? Hah. Yet if there is one modern game you can name that's "hardcore", it's SMB. And if you don't think so, go finish (or even acquire) the "master" levels, then we'll talk.

@#48 bm
Thankyou. Super Monkey Ball is insanely challenging, despite the cutesy design. Now I have a mighty need to snap my thumb off from playing it too long, as I always do hahaha.
@Everyone else
Wow. This was an incredibly amusing read. I do not feel like I wasted that five plus minutes of my life from all the laughing I did. Really cheered me up from my bad morning.
Anyways, I am looking forward to this game. Hopefully it won't disappoint. The design is definitely from the Elebits team - Dewy's is looking pretty gorgeous and nice from an artist's point of view. If the gameplay is as nice as I think it will be, I'll definitely be picking this up. More so, if it provides a challenge.
Because you know, I too am an intelligent adult. I play 'hardcore' games like Halo and Gears and Zelda and enjoy them fine, but I'm comfortable enough with my masculinity to be found playing a game like Dewy's because it is just that enjoyable. Just like I am comfortable enough to play Super Monkey Ball, or Elebits, or generally anything else that doesn't have blood and guts and isn't considered 'manly'.
Sincerely,
Flynn
