For 360 apologists claiming DVD-9 is enough for games, let me just say "Blue Dragon". Sure, most games including the crapola franchise ports could fit on a DVD-9 for the time being, but an increasing number of games won't, and either they'll have less content, or you'll have to download it and possibly pay for it.

Anyway aside from games, there is another reason the PS3 needs Blu-Ray more than the 360 - localization. Since 360 games are region locked it isn't so much of an issue for them, however we're already seeing PS3 titles that offer Japanese and US localized content. Which is a bonus for importers and manufacturers who only have to master the game once for multiple territories.

Alright, bundles! Blu Ray is so popular here that we can't keep the titles off the shelves. Of course, this greatly worded study tells us that the format is wildly successful and that the piles of unsold stock are actually not where we left them. Curious, that.

Can anyone even justify to me why the hell we still NEED optical media?

For the whole of the last generation, as soon as I bought an xbox game (and some that I didnt I admit), I would rip it to my hard drive and send it to my xbox.

That way I had no stupid loud drive sounds, no need to get up to switch disks, no risk of damaging my disks, and it was all a lot more environmentally friendly.

Why is the XBOX scene two generations more advanced than the gaming industry? I really wouldnt mind having 17gb to download- its better than going to the shops or waiting for a delivery. They could still sell disks for those with slow internet too.

Get rid of stupid DRM and digital distribution is the way to go.

"Mabe my question was not simple enough. What SPECIFIC advantages does DVD give developers over CD for games? Can someone that disikes BluRay for games give me the correct answer?"

Room. That's it. A dvd holds ~4.7 gigs (or close to 9 for a dual layer disc) whereas a CD holds ~700 megs.

Bluray holds what, 30 gigs? 50 gigs? HD Dvd offers identical storage (a little less if I recall). The advantage is simply the ability to store more data on the drive which can presumably translate to better graphics.

Personally I don't think the format war will be over until either format sells at least 10 million standalone players.

"All you bluray fanbboys are gonna be pissed when your fancy new format turns into the new laserdisc."

Hey, I've still got a stack of laserdiscs and a perfectly functional Pioneer LD player. There's some great stuff on LD that never made it to DVD (What Happened Was..., Twilight of the Cockroaches, Twice Upon a Time, etc).

As for direct downloads, I think they have an important place in the current market, but optical media isn't quite obsolete yet. Very very few people have the bandwidth or patience to download a 40+ GB file (like Kingdom of Heaven of Blu-Ray). X-Box 360 has it kind of right with their 720p movies, but they tend to be either 720p or 5.1, but usually not both. As long as I can rent Blu-Ray and HD-DVD from Netflix, I'm not really sold on downloading DRM'd films.

The problem is we ARE NOT in an HD Era just yet. We are NOT in need of 50GB of capacity. That's just the facts. In America HD movies and HDTV's might be a growing trend, but here in Europe? There are no Blu-Ray movies being sold, prices for HDTV's are sky high, SDTV's more often than not lack component input and 480p support! Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 jumped on the high-def revolution... sadly the revolution isn't here yet! Even in America the big majority of people still have SDTV's! The only manufacturer that saw this was Nintendo, and acted accordingly. The next console generation will be the sweet spot for a HD game console, HDTV's will actually be popular then, and DVD-9 discs aren't gonna cut it. Xbox 720 will have high-capacity disks and the Xii will support HD resolutions. Meanwhile PS4 will jump on some brandnew technology that is just catching on, raising the consoles price. PS3 is just ahead of it's time.

On defense of Blu-Ray I'll say that DVD-9 has dual layers, what makes you think Blu-Ray can't? Expect 100GB BD's soon.

Actually Slaziman, that would make it quad layer then at 100gb. 50gb is already a dual layer disc. 25 is stand alone.

:D Everyone complaining about 90 percent viewers of BR being the people that bought a ps3 with a movie bundled in. 500k Ps3's came with that bundle- that's done with. Over 2 million Ps3's have been sold. So as far as to say 90 percent of people watching movies in BR for 2 million is of course Evidence that you are ignoring to be ignorant. I for one see the importance of Blu-ray for gaming. People complain and say you can split it up, but why would you want to? Or if and then- for people that love games, THAT LOVE play time and love for games to last as long as they last and when it's over, you want more. Lets Just give a tiny example-If a game is two Blu-ray discs long- what's the first thought that comes to mind? " that's a big fucking game" if it were to be two DVD's long, You'd say "this is a long game" so Imagine two Blu-rays. Not only are people looking at BR the wrong way, their only looking at it to be fanboys. I can get a Blu-ray player and make a game that looks like the best looking ps2 game, Now imagine how much detail can be spent filling that disc with extra shit, Extra details in the graphics, extra details in the gameplay, mechanics, effects-etc- How Much MORE can be placed inside to fill a blu-ray up and I just got bored of trying to make a point. Here's something else, Blu Ray came out in 2002 with sony, They've been at this blu-ray business for awhile trying to get it into your house hold. Ps3 just made it possible for them. As far as forcing a format down your throat, If it tastes good, eat it. Anyone with a ps3 will attest that their buying blu-ray movies, just to take advatange of the blu-ray they have, and Their enjoying it very much so. Sony does something good, Everyone who hates just wants it to look bad. It's a shame we live in such a society where you must be part of ONE thing and not diversed into whatever you want. I have a xbox360, I bought it not to long ago, Why? For the games. I plan on getting a playstation 3 around the end of march or more ahead ( the revisioned Ps3 plz) For the games and to have a bR player. not only am I gonna have the best of both worlds, I'm gonna have the best of all three worlds. Ps3, Br, and 360's xbox live. ;) quit being a bitch to sony, They brought you ps1-2. ;)

Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on is actually quiet. The 360 system uses minimal resources so it goes quiet too.

One of the things you guys are failing to mention or even see is that the only company/manufacturing HD-DVD Players and heading the fight for the High Definition DVD Promotion Camp is Toshiba and no body else. While Sony has Samsung, Panasonic, & LG backing them in maufacturing parts SONY is not taking as large of a hit as Toshiba is.

And to the guy who said HD-DVD is cheaper; you are wrong my friend. The average prices on Amazon.com show that Blu Ray movies are being sold for one dollar cheaper than the average HD-DVD. And even someof the HD-DVD supporters here have even said tehreason for the increase in sales for Blu Ray is due to the lack of content for HD DVD. Which if you look at the upcoming releases of movies on both formats. That is going to be the standard trend for the year.

As far as porn in concerned: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/02/05/so-theres-porn-on-blu-ray-after-all/

To the person defending DVD by using DVDAudio vs CD as a example: the reason cd won is because ppl making dvdaudio forgot why ppl listen to music in the 1st place. We listen on the go, while doing housework etc. No one is going to sit within the 5.1 speaker area just to listen to music for hours...So dvd-audio is pointless. Now if you watch a dvd and watch the same movie on a hd channel in 1080i, there's a very noticible difference...so yeah I'd want next gen format.
