Wow, you guys finally started a podcast! Can't wait to get my ...ears... on this!
qbix @ Feb 6th 2007 7:26PM
Good times. Listening right now.
KBeat @ Feb 6th 2007 7:29PM
iTunes? I manage all my podcasts through iTunes. Will you have yours available there?
Matt @ Feb 6th 2007 7:29PM
Bout time! I've been waiting for this ever since Engadget Podcast #1.
Matt @ Feb 6th 2007 7:30PM
KBeat
You can add any podcast to your iTunes list through the advanced options. All you need is the URL for the RSS feed.
Casey @ Feb 6th 2007 7:38PM
First Post, This isn't news!
jay @ Feb 6th 2007 7:36PM
This *will* be different to every other American podcast and actually be enjoyable, right? The only compensation for you guys calling it "Edin-burg" is good content.
That's why I stopped watching CNN.
KBeat @ Feb 6th 2007 7:36PM
I'll check that out.....thanks Matt
Baby21 @ Feb 6th 2007 7:38PM
I'm going to sue you for Disability Discrimination Act 2007.
Transcript please?
Your English Teacher @ Feb 6th 2007 8:49PM
Can I make a suggestion? You're program list there looks exactly the same as all the other gaming podcasts out there. This basically looks like a repeat of last week's hot-spot or 1up yours.
Why not try something new?
C. Grant @ Feb 6th 2007 7:44PM
KBeat: Yup, we'll hopefully have the 'cast added to iTunes directory shortly. In the interim, you can indeed add the RSS link above using the advanced option (thanks, Matt!).
jay: we aim to please! If you've got an idea of how to make it better, let us know! We're going to break up the monotony by inviting guests on, including readers of the 'stiq.
Lorben @ Feb 6th 2007 7:47PM
Hexadedecimal Genome! Good choice Joystiq.
TopaZ @ Feb 6th 2007 7:47PM
Constructive Criticism:
Ludwig should get a quality microphone, the difference in audio quality between the 2 hosts is heartbreaking.
Adding a proven, witty radio host into the mix would help the show greatly. The strained attempts at humor hurt my soul -- talented writers don't always make talented radio hosts.
Live audience interaction: With the advent of SkypeCasts (100 participants) and TalkShoe (lower quality, but hundreds of participants), shows without live participation seem stagnant.
Editing: This could have been trimmed from 63 somewhat-tedious minutes to 30 somewhat-engaging minutes.
clay @ Feb 7th 2007 1:08AM
how about change the name to something more friendly like NETCAST. i am tired of people giving recorded messages with the name pod in them. stop giving apple so much credit.
Jeffler @ Feb 7th 2007 7:08AM
If this isn't as good as the Hotspot count me out. I may be learning nothing but that show is fucking awesome on its own.
C. Grant @ Feb 6th 2007 7:54PM
TopaZ: Ludwig's audio is being recorded directly out of Skype, which accounts for a great deal of the audio fidelity. We're going to try editing together two locally recorded versions, but that means transmitting MP3 versions across like 6 oceans. Suffice it to say, we're aware it could sound better.
Did u just call us talented righters? Wow! Like, thx! :)
Never considered live participation. Sounds... difficult to manage. Great feedback though!
Charron @ Feb 6th 2007 7:58PM
My suggestion is that you actually call it the Dreamcast. It's such a clever name for a gaming podcast. Lot less generic than Joystiq Podcast.
Yea, yea, Sega could probably sue and all that, but hey, that's how you generate headlines!
C. Grant @ Feb 6th 2007 8:03PM
How about the Joystiq Dreamcast Podcast? Wait, that just sounds like a podcast about the Dreamcast! Urgh, I don't know ...
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 6th 2007 9:00PM
You guys should interview a parakeet.
CJC @ Mar 3rd 2007 3:58PM
Joycast?
Pod...stiq?
Something more plain like "The Joystiq Blogcast?"
Joshua @ Feb 6th 2007 8:43PM
I agree with Charron (#14), it really should just be called the Dreamcast.
And I agree with TopaZ on the quality on Ludwig's end and the length.
Well, it's a start. I like the initiative, though, so keep it up!
Patrick M. @ Feb 6th 2007 8:50PM
great another thing to distract me from studying for my Political Studies midterm, thanks a lot guys.
Dracula Jones @ Feb 6th 2007 9:27PM
Sweet, I'll listen on my commute tomorrow morning.
Having not listened yet, I have no idea what to expect, but I know Chris Grant has guested on Gaming Steve. I have sorely missed Steve's podcast the past couple months. Please shoot for that level of quality and insight and we'll all be better for it (stutter less, though).
For anyone who has not listened to Gaming Steve's podcast, it was easily the best... check out the back catalog.
Retrofied @ Feb 6th 2007 9:31PM
Awesome, Joystiq! I'll be sure to tune in every 'cast.
lucky644 @ Feb 6th 2007 10:05PM
Subscribed :)
EOTistatron @ Feb 6th 2007 10:10PM
Which Discworld book?
Draco @ Feb 6th 2007 10:19PM
my suggestion for the podcast name is.
"very podcast interesting Joystiq featureing several hosts who play brain enhancing game make Dr.Ryuta Kawashima for powering your cerebral energy" or "Joystiq Podcast" for short
I liked the show, very relaxing :)
Arno @ Feb 6th 2007 10:54PM
All I can say is: fi-na-lly
C. Grant @ Feb 6th 2007 10:56PM
Draco wins! VPIJFSHWPBEGMDRKFPYCE is totally better than JP: TTBTWCTO.
Your English Teacher: We're hearing you on wanting something new. Any suggestions? :) Our thought: Sure, we're delinquent in getting this up and running, but since we're already a major source of gaming news, why should we immediately forfeit that role in podcasting? Once we're humming along, we'll be able to get these out earlier, so it won't seem like "OLD NEWS"!
C. Grant @ Feb 6th 2007 10:59PM
Arno: I know! We're naughty! :(
Lieutenant Lawl @ Feb 6th 2007 11:02PM
Who is living next to an ocean? I swear I was hearing waves.
d503 @ Feb 6th 2007 11:48PM
As long as I never have to listen to Vladimir Cole's pompous diatribes on an industry that he is overly critical about, I'm game...
Andrew Carnegie @ Feb 6th 2007 11:51PM
You have disappointed me... I blacked out from excitement when seeing that the first podcast was going to be about the Dreamcast. However, when I awoke from my fanboi induced stupor *orange spirals scrawled over every surface* browsed the contents of it and ended up being very dissapointed.
sanderson @ Feb 7th 2007 12:26AM
Congratulations on the first 'cast. Thought it was thoroughly entertaining. BTW, the disclaimer on the VF5 review seems to be a result of the coverage the "scandal" story got. It is not present in the EGM reviews which went to print before the news of Mielke/Shane's involvement. This was also a topic on the Player One Podcast where some former gaming magazine editors discussed the issue and gave a plug to Joystiq.
Raikage @ Feb 7th 2007 12:35AM
Hey Ludy I don't enjoy GTA either! I've been trying to explain to my friends that GTA is not all that great... with no avail! Although a drive-by on a bike (while ringing the bell) is quite amuzing...
At last! I'm not alone!
Tom @ Feb 7th 2007 12:39AM
My PSP is now aggregating your as-yet-unreleased future podcasts. Congrats.
Tony Bell @ Feb 7th 2007 3:07AM
re: Crackdown demo
They both totally panned the Crackdown demo.
Did you guys actually jump?
Did you try to improve your skills?
It's not a driver/shooter - it's an incredible game! Here's a hint. The car = the least fun way to travel.
What a depressing review.
C. Grant @ Feb 7th 2007 8:23AM
Tony Bell: After reading MTV News' bit on Jones:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/05/crackdown-creators-ego-intact-after-halo-3-boost/
we both tucked our tails between our legs and agreed Crackdown deserves some more time. Heck, we both admitted as much during the podcast ... it was the bandana'd gangsters that turned us off!
Andrew: See, there's one BAD reason we can't call it the Dreamcast.
Jeffler: We certainly don't aim to be *not* as good as that ...
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Feb 7th 2007 8:51AM
I've actually gone ahead and pre-ordered the game. :) I'm gonna give it a proper shot and at least attempt to enjoy a GTA-style game. I'm sure I'll be able to latch onto something given the right amount of time.
kerbero9 @ Feb 7th 2007 9:55AM
The Joyqast
polly @ Feb 7th 2007 11:12AM
Know what's really boring to listen to? A 10-15 minute discussion on what you want to call your own podcast.
Austin @ Feb 7th 2007 11:32AM
Its great to see you get on this I've been waiting a while for it. For constructive criticism i would take some notes from engadget and other sites.
1. You need one lead role with three total people (you can rotate the others). This balances opinion and keeps things on track. Allowing one to prepare and still maintain interactive conversation.
2. Break it up into segments - i know it sounds like everything else but that is for a reason.
3. Don't be like engadget and come out with one whenever you get around to it. Have it scheduled and if you are not going to hit the schedule let people know (ahead of time).
4. Geek humor (drawing out words for sarcasm and long pauses after statements) is funny, but doesn't translate on a podcast because there is no interaction with the audience. If you don't like something slam it (its for the audience not the publishers feelings).
I wanted to do ten but nobody reads long posts (maybe you could Ban them too!).
Great start though and keep'm coming.
I like "Joyqast"
Benjamin Gilbert @ Feb 7th 2007 1:13PM
I loved the blogcast guys and was glad to see joystiq getting in on that end of the internet news. As per your request for suggestions and constructive criticism, I humbly offer the following:
A.) Name it, "The 'Stiq"
B.) Incorporate segments, as other shows have done, as this helps to break up any monotony or dead air you may encounter.
C.) Feel free to reference other podcasts, as you can be sure lots of your listeners are checking out the 1up podcast, the 1up show, The hotspot from gamespot, ign gamescoop, etc. One of Major Nelson's Blogcast problems is that he doesn't shift from one segment to the other easily, there's a lot of dead air and he's notoriously boring for this (among other reasons) at times. To return to the origin of this suggestion though, when I say "reference" other podcasts I mean in terms of content. The 1up podcast (either that or egm live) have begun a "blog thread" if you will, in order to begin defining the historically important vidoegames (basically something that would serve as a basis or core syllabus for a class on the subject.) This kind of thing is easy to feed off of and would be of interest to most folks who are listening to gaming podcasts to begin with. The main reason most people (at very least myself) listen to many gaming podcasts is not because we like hearing the same news from different sources, but because we like the views offered on the news from different sources. Jeff Gertsman at Gamespot probably feels a lot different than Luke Smith from 1up about new Halo 3 info, whereas Hilary Goldstein at IGN probably won't have anything intelligent to say either way. But I digress.
D.) Please please please respond to one of my e-mails regarding being a Joystiq intern this summer. I have a resume, a cover letter, sample writings, a passion for videogames and I'd like to think I'm a pretty damned hard worker. I would love to help and go to school in Philadelphia. Pleeeeeeeaaaase!
K, good luck Joystiq. Blogcast #1 was good stuff, let's hope y'all implement more in the future. I'll be sure to keep adding suggestions/comments.
WhatIsThatThing @ Feb 7th 2007 5:16PM
I pronounce it like "I-ass". Like the Greek guy. Fought in the Trojan War. In The Iliad.
Spencer @ Feb 7th 2007 8:13PM
I noticed you said the original Xbox had DX10 =)
Overall, it was a good first ..pre-recorded aural segment. Good to hear you'll be getting a voicemail set up at some point, that could provide some very interesting Q&A or points of discussion.
I think you could create some very interesting sections by deciding an arbitrary topic before each P-RAS and having readers call in about it. There are few forums (afaik) available with interesting video game discussion. Obviously, the question "What to call this new thing we're doing" has yielded mostly poor results, but something like "Most influential game to the standardization of thumbpads on controllers" could be fun. Or maybe the first one should be "Best questions for listener voicemail".
O Y O Y @ Feb 7th 2007 8:43PM
I love the intro music. DL'ed the song and bought the CD. Your 'cast is good for its first show. Segments are good. A third guy, or revolving co-hosts would be good IMHO, to break up the monotony. For good chemistry see your good friend's 'cast's CheapyD's CAGcast. Guys you are doing good, just don't get too high and mighty (Engadget podcast) or elitist (1up everything). Heres to whatevercast episode 2!!!!
Saturn2888 @ Feb 8th 2007 1:16AM
You guys really need to laugh when you're being sarcastic because it almost sounds like you're being serious except for the fact that I know you're being sarcastic. Also, it's not Opus, it's Ops as in, Operations. I couldn't tell if that was sarcasm or not. That's a sign you need to laugh or say something to make it sound like it's not you telling the truth.
AJ @ Feb 8th 2007 11:01AM
Not bad for the first one!
BTW... Not sure if it's just me, but I used the advanced add from iTunes to grab your RSS (How dirty!?!) Once the show downloaded, I disconnected my iPod, scrolled to the new file, pushed play... wait for it... my iPod reboots.
I tried again, same results, I deleted the file from my PC and computer, re-subscribed, same results. I had to listen to the file in iTunes.
Just wondering if anyone else reported this same issue.
Thanks for the NetCast!
C. Grant @ Feb 8th 2007 4:39PM
Saturn2888: Haha, yeah. Uhh, we're both sorta like that (LUDWIG'S WORSE!). We'll try to keep the sarcasm turned down a little bit ... like the DX10 joke. I mean, it had to have DX10, right? Otherwise, why would Halo2 need Vista? ;)
AJ: That's wild! I can't reproduce it on my iPod (3rd Gen), but we'll definitely look into it if anyone else has the same problem. Anyone?
Rocky @ Feb 9th 2007 8:59PM
A hilarious Podcast....Chris & Ludwig are naturally funny imo (good sign!) - especially lovin Ludwig's dryness: he puts us brits to shame! :D
As for the name...how bout "The Joystiq Podcast" or maybe "The Podcast by Joystiq"
