Hmmm... a possible demo of a game, based on a B-level franchise, which was designed as a show-off pre-rendered video for a press conference to blow smoke and confuse potential 360 buyers...

Excuse me if I am underwhelmed.

Oh my God please any game that is called a "Halo Killer" automatically fails for the simple fact that the developer tries to make thier game similar and better than another game wich kills all creativity

Nothing is going to "kill" Halo. Saint's Row didn't kill GTA. Sonic didn't kill Mario. Even if Killzone 2 comes out looking BETTER than the fake E3 video, Halo 3 will still be one of the biggest game launches ever.

There's no reason two good FPS franchises can't exist without one "killing" the other. Frankly, based on Killzone's track record thus far, I'd label it more "suicidal" than "Halo killer."

I must confess, I've recently gotten into the first Killzone. But mainly only because the PS3 runs it without a single drop in framerate (incidently, four player Twisted Metal Black runs smooth as silk). The PSP Killzone was actually very good and got favorable scores.

If the PS3 Killzone can deliver, well, let's just say I'll be a happy gamer. Especially after coming down off a Resistance buzz.

Likeliness of this happening? Less than zilch. Doesn't matter regardless. By the time I'm done with Crackdown, Gundam Musuo will be in tow and from there, no clues. March is definately without any shortages of games.

Gears of War... Resistance... Halo 3... Killzone 2... Last generation the XBox was pigeonholed as an FPS system for hardcare gamers. This generation, both Microsoft and Sony are doing their finest to make sure that happens to the 360 and PS3.

Over-hyping FPSs is potentially bad because it alienates general and casual gamers, who outnumber hardcore gamers. The PS1 and PS2 were huge successes because of the masses of non-hardcore gamers who bought those systems, meanwhile XBox sales were poorer because that system never appealed outside of the limited hardcore market. And now, both Microsoft and Sony are fighting over that limited hardcore market, and handing the majority of potential buyers over to Nintendo.

Looks like Guerilla and Sony were determined to make Killzone 2 look as close to as good as the pre-rendered video trailer that everyone criticized. Don't count-out Killzone 2 out just yet, it might surprise us considering we haven't heard much about it for a while. Show through comparison how good or bad Halo 3 really is compared to it.

Killzone 2 demo? Is this Sony's attempt to steal thunder away from Microsoft and Halo 3 beta???

PLEASE!

How good can this demo/game be if it was pushed back in favor of Resistance? Not very...

Sony should fall down on there knees and thank their lucky stars Gates wasn't able to deliver Halo 3 on the PS3 release date as promised. If he did, coupled with the Wii's success there would be A LOT more PS3s sitting on store shelves than there are right now...

Apparently Joystiq has been living under a rock since E305. The recent Killzone: Liberation for PSP is quite noteworthy. In fact it's gotten great scores all around.

Oh wait, but this is Joystiq, so nothing Sony-related is noteworthy is it? Unless it smells of 360 and Ninty fanboyism.

Granted, the first Killzone was limited, but Liberation was awesome. The GDC is going to be pretty interesting. It's an exciting time to be a gamer.

So... when does the Halo 3 beta start?

I have high hopes for Killzone 2, Sony has put a lot of time and effort into it since the trailer they showed 2 years ago. One can only expect it to be good if they have been keeping this game so under-wraps for years and not letting out anything but a trailer.

First off. I loved Killzone... Multi not so much but single was pretty good. And they didn't shut up about it because Resistance is better. Its so that our attention would be on Resistance which needed all the help it could get and we wouldn't be distracted by Killzone 2. Anyway its like saying COD or GRAW was going to be a halo killer. Its a different kind of game. Although they never should have said it would be a halo killer that alone destroyed all of their credibility.

If Sony wants to dissuade people from playing the Halo3 beta, they're going about it all wrong. Instead of releasing a "Halo3 Killer", they should release a "CRACKDOWN" killer, which they probably don't have at this moment.

Actually, the Metacritic average is 78/100...hardly "noteworthy" or "great scores". It's pretty much in the average range. The fact is that the Killzone franchise has yet to even remotely come close to touching the Halo franchise (in terms of game quality)....before the creators of Killzone start trying to steal Halo 3's "thunder" or hype their game in the same sentence as Halo, they might want to make something that's even a 10th as good as the original Halo first.

Anyways, this demo coming before the Halo 3 beta is going to do absolutely nothing....Halo 3 will still outsell Killzone by a very large amount.

I just can't wait to compare the actual game with the pre-renders used to confuse potential 360 buyers and get people to wait for the PS3. It will be the culmination of the already emerging fact that you waited an entire year for a very graphically comparible system.

Umm wasn't the Killzone 2 trailer just to show off the Cell Processor?

I think if Sony popped out something in some way shape or form saying/showing there is a KillZone 2 on its way, they may actually get some sales of the PS3 out the door.

That update really was a dumb one. Most of the games suck that are on the list. Plus Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is not a game and yet it is higher then KZ:Liberation. That lists says nothing on how it sold. Last I heard that was one of the big sellers in the Holiday Season. So to say KZ:L sucks is wrong.

Now as for a KZ Demo I think that would be a good idea to bring out. I just think the Demo will be there to get people ready for KZ in 08. Because if it comes out this year it will suck. But if it comes out next year when there is no Halo 3 the game will look a lot better plus will sell more.

Think Killzone really wants to compete with the real thunder in march, God of War 2? I have no console alligence, but the first God of War is one of my favorite games of all time.

Even Crysis isn't shaping up as great as all the Renders (just look at the early previews). I have a hard time believing Killzone will be anything spectacular either. If it is, color me surprised.

Actually, I do not know of any game that actually killed another game... but my knowledge is somewhat limited.

You can't stop the juggarnuat that is Halo. Even if the game doesn't get it's habitual +9 rating, people want to finish the story. Over 7 million purchased Halo 2, so even if half support that number for Halo 3, you've got a blockbuster game.

I just love your update with saying KZ:Liberation sucks. Well after looking at the list I see games that are scored higher then it but did not sell well in sales at all. To say Gitaroo Man Lives! is a better game the KZ:L is funny. I am not saying that game is bad but from what I have heard that game did not sell well at all.

Plus Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is not a game. So to show this list that is just random stuff really does not hold any truth to it. Plus last I heard KZ was one of the big Seller's this past Holiday.

So to say KZ suck with some thing that in it self it false is really funny.

That being said I hope there is a KZ Demo that comes out soon. No one ever said KZ would be a Halo killer it was the Press not Sony. Also who is to say that KZ for the PS3 did not start right away on the game. It could have started as a PS2 game but when news of the PS3 it became a PS3 version game instead.

So if that did happen KZ would have been being worked on before Halo3.

I am looking forward to playing both games and owning both. But even if KZ has been being worked on for year I think it would be best to bring out the game in 08 not 07. That way the Halo FPS series will be taking a break and this way KZ can come out on the market and not be classed as a Halo Killer. Plus this way KZ can take the time it needs and will not be rushed.

So again with that being said it would be smart of Sony to bring out a Demo of KZ. Yes it will not kill Halo but at least this way it will put a bump in the road for Halo.

I beta tested killzone, and while it played well and had its highlights, no it wasn’t a halo killer. The magazines and press threw that title on the game.

With the company bought out, the team tripled, and the budget increased by who knows how much, they're going for gold with this game. Look at the GTA franchise, it didn’t hit big till 3, and the two previous were decently received. Will it kill Halo? Most likely not, the game will launch and people will love it for the same reasons they hated Resistance. (i heard a lot of Resistance sucks cause it doesn't have a cover system, Halo wont but you'll never hear it from them) Will it turn heads? If it reaches a point where it is comparable to the trailer shown, it’ll definitely show that the PS3 is the graphics powerhouse Sony has said it would be. To the average consumer, here’s Halo 3 at the EB Kiosk, and here’s Killzone at the same EB. If killzone can outmatch halo 3 graphically, it'll do a lot for PS3. Never mind the people who will reply “Bungie isn’t about graphics” that’s what’s making and breaking these consoles (except the wii, people are still blinded by the controls) on top of software.

I'd say Joystiq is the minority in saying "Killzone Liberation sucks" The game has an average ratio of 80% on Gamerankings, which is very respectable. God forbid they ever post a link to that website. Also, I'm pretty hyped for Killzone 2, I cant wait to see what it looks like. Calling it a "bomb" before actually seeing any gameplay is quite immature. But then again, were dealing with Joystiq and I wouldnt be at all surprised if these guys were a bunch of fanboys. Also, Sony never claimed Killzone to be a "HALO KILLER" that little claim probably came from a preview.

Bah, hit the button too soon.

Killzone 1 was definitely a fun game, even if it didn't rank pretty high. I don't generally go with a critics view on video games anymore. (Not since I found out Mario Kart 64 got terrible reviews when it first came out... and I played that game religiously).

I wouldn't say "Halo killer" as they do, however. I think it's funny that every game that comes out (FPS)they prime it as "halo" killer to generate some heat.

Though if they do it on every FPS that comes out... it loses its appeal.

Well, if Killzone2 and Motorstorm trailers were the PS3 Cell processor back in 2005, as Sony had stated ( I actually remember seeing interviews with some Sony people were they said that those trailer were actually the PS3 hardware rendering graphics)

Lets compare Motorstorm,, back in 2005

javascript:void(window.open('http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/748/748488/vid_1197027.html','ign_playlist_pla
yer','width=998,height=726,scrollbars=yes,toolbar=no,location=no,resizable=yes'))

then you get this now,

javascript:void(window.open('http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/748/748488/vid_1778542.html','ign_playlist_player','width=998,height=726,scrollbars=yes,toolbar=no,location=no,resizable=yes'))

I expect the same out of Killzone2. And even if it did look nice, if “Giant Crabs” from authentic Japanese history have taught everyone something, is that its gonna need a hole lot more than just looking pretty.

Also, Motorstorm shows that its clear that developers have harnessed the true power of the Cell processor and brought it a long way since 2005.

Wouldn't you know what it looks like if you beta tested?
Maybe you alpha tested with no graphics?

Also, I think Halo 3 is being hyped too much and will not be as great as everyone thinks it will be.
I saw some videos of Halo 3 gameplay and it doesn't look that great graphically. The gameplay itself didn't look too great either. Just the same old Halo 2 with little improvement in graphics.

If this Killzone 2 demo is supposed to steal thunder from the Halo 3 Beta, does that mean they intend to sell more PS3s thanks to it? I don't think a game no matter how good it is is enough to sell a $600 console, let alone a demo of a new game from an average fps franchise. Hype can only go so far.

You can try, but you can't stop the main draws of Halo. Its all about the well balanced battles, creative sci-fi environments, the memorable characters, and the story (which actually goes pretty deep). Its got a very human aspect to the game, a sense of humor, its got soul ya know? You can't just make a clone. I'm more of a Halo 1 fan than 2, but from what I've heard 3 will feel more like 1.

There are 2 possibilities as to why we haven't seen Killzone 2 since E305; one is that it was actually real-time, and we are going to be wow'd very soon to see that it looked better than it did at E3, two is that it was all smokes and mirrors and that they just started production on the game just recently and will look nothing like the E3 trailer.

My best is 2. Sorry to not be optimistic, but Sony is in the boy's position in boy who cries wolf, and I won't believe a damn word.
