This is a HUGE announcement if it's true! It could knock Halo off it's lofty ol' perch!

...well...that's assuming that anyone gave a shit about Killzone 2 and actually played the first one.

Moonfire, considering just how often I see you post about the great evils of Sony, I could count the stars completely before, even if Killzone delivers (which it honestly isn't too far beyond GOW), you would give anything even remotely resembling a positive comment about Sony. I mean, seriously. You really are a fucking clownshoe at this point.

Anyone who has played Killzone that wasn't misguided by Sony knows that the game was garbage...so this doesn't really mean a whole lot. A sequel is everything short of exciting. Will they upgrade the 2-3 enemies to 4? Will they add a couple of voice samples to the already annoying 3-4? "Grenade!" "Scatter!"...god...it was an obnoxious and painful experience.

Killzone is probably the WORST PS2 game I own. It's not worth trading in because nobody wants it. I guess anyone who doesn't play FPS games might think it's good...but that makes me sad. Resistance is a much better game, and it isn't even that great.

Besides, the shear number of people who would kill to play Halo 3 far surpasses the handful of people who are actually excited...or even aware of Killzone 2.

I usually don't call out the poster, tho it has happened in the past.

@James Ransom-Wiley

"Update: In response to comments that Killzone: Liberation (PSP) is "very good" or has "gotten great scores all around" (etc...), we simply offer up evidence that the title ranks 56th among current PSP games (233 in all) listed in score order. While we respect the opinions of those who enjoy the game, generally speaking, we maintain that Liberation is hardly noteworthy beyond its tie to the ridiculously over-hyped Killzone franchise."

It holds a score of 78 on metacritic. Which is the 11th highest score for a psp game. The highest score is 89. The rank of 56th is an arbitrary number due to the fact ties are not broken with this system.

Let's just focus on the 78 tho. In that case, Other not-noteworthy games would include Mega Man ZX, Final Fantasy 3, Pheonix Wright, AND Brain Training. Maybe now you can see how silly it is to call a good game, not noteworthy because of a metacritic score. What metacritic score would a game need to become noteworthy? Hotel Dusk, Trauma Center and Warioware: Touched all scored 81 or below, are you saying those games are noteworthy and Killzone liberation is not because they scored 3 points over?

Kill-Zone 1 had awesome graphics. The game sucked though. It was EXTREMELY linear, the controls sucked. So what if the graphics 'look like the target render video'. They've got a ton to prove to even rival a Halo game.

Seeing as though most of these comments stem from the Halo comparison, the marketing strategy worked extremely well.

I will admit, though, that I am dying to see this game. The original trailer, though suspected fake, was awesome looking and the devs claimed it was the real deal. My guess is it was all a big lie to discourage 360 sales. It will be interesting to finally find out.

My bet is that it doesn't look much, if any, better than Resistance. There is no way they had a game going realtime that looked that good back in 2005. Resistance was put together by better devs and was developed for just as long.

killzone ranks #695 on PS2 (on metacritic), Halo1 is #1 and Halo2 ranks #3 on Xbox. Does Sony really think Killzone2 is going to make this huge leap. Well, at least PS3 owners will be happy if it makes into the top 100 on the PS3 games... given there probably only will be 100 games on PS3 by the time this comes out :-)

@55

But that is exactly what everyone, including myself, wants. They want Halo2 gameplay with better graphics, new maps, some slight gameplay tweaks, and some new weapons. Lost Planet and Gears type games give us the different experiences.

My bet is that given all the time and resources that were devoted to this game, which already has a gameplay that works, Halo3 is going to absolutely rock. It is as sure of a bet that LoZ:TP would be a good game. It is as sure as MGS4 will be good. The chances of it sucking, if you liked the first two, are almost zero.

mrlee, he said he beta'd the original. As did I.

My main complaint is that, while the graphics were beautiful to behold, they were clearly beyond PS2s abilities (or even Xbox for that manner). Gameplay was stiffled by framerate issues. So much so, it just sat on my shelf. Then, one night, we decided to try PS3s multiplayer with Ratchet & Clank 4, and even with four players, lots of rockets, and such, the framerate was untouchable. Compelled, we threw in Twisted Metal Black. Once again, PS3 killed framerate issues. So we tried throwing in a 6 star code on GTA3, not a single dip. Finally, we looked at Killzone and I found myself playing through it suddenly.

As for the linearity of it... let me get this straight. Halo fans are complaining about Linearity? Isn't Halo the same game that breaks FPS titles down into a simple formula of...

"Move from point A to B. Stay in point B until all enemies are defeated. Move onto point C."

I mean, there isn't really any point to complaining about linearity in an FPS since only really Dues Ex removed that barrier. Halo is linear as all hell. Oh wait, Halo = Microsoft, Killzone = Sony, this site = Joystiq. Keep forgetting that.

PLEASE, both Halos are linear, but Kill-zone is even moreso. To be honest, I feel that the redeeming value of the Halo series at this point are its controls and the multi-player. Both Halos and Kill-zone really don't excell in single-player, but Kill-zone had terrible execution.

That said, I actually prefer TimeSplitters 2&3 over both series. But 'Halo-killer' Kill-zone was not.

I loved Resistance because the fun of the weapons in Ratchet&Clank carried over quite well. I also look forward to seeing just wwhat Michael Hale's fate is. That, and the four player rocks. Note to Sony, Microsoft, and whoever else is listening. BRING BACK FOUR PLAYER SPLITSCREEN. Not one, not two, but four player.

I'm going with sheppy on this one! Killzone really wasn't terrible, it had problems though. And to the guy saying killzone was ranked 692 and halo 1st and 3rd... how many games were on the xbox again? I'm not arguing KZ got dismal sales, but they are very very active in their fan community. More so than Bungie! They know every problem in KZ. They know the hacks, exploits, and other hidden issues. Obviously, they know the reasons for bad reviews, as well. They are expected to fail! So if this game turns out to be very good, then it will get noticed. It will get noticed even if it terrible, because of the coined term "halo-killer." Halo is good, but it isn't exactly innovative. The best thing Halo added to Console Gaming was the separate grenade button.

You have got to be shitting me, killzone, the game where we saw a hype cg rendered trailer 2 years ago and nothing else is coming out in all it's photorealistic glory before the halo 3 beta?????

Uhhh, last time I checked, I was already accepted to the halo 3 beta, and things seem to be moving at somewhat of a pace, I expect the halo 3 beta to be out within the next 2 months. Last news/videos/screenshots I've seen of the killzone ps3 are at least 2 years old.

So sony is gonna drop the killzone bomb. You do realize the best case for killzone is that it has gears level graphics, which 1) I don't think ps3 can do right now, and 2) is no where near what the rendered e3-05 video looks like. It's just going to get negative press because there is no possible way for it to live up to the hype level that trailer put on the ps3.

I wish the game would just come out already, so people would just admit that their ps3's can't and won't do killzone trailer quality graphics in it's lifetime.

Killzone is much more linear than Halo in the sense that Killzone1 is practically on rails. At least in Halo, especially the original, you can be creative in your approach and successfully handle the same situation different ways. Killzone is laid out plain and simple with little room for exploring.

But, that is all pretty irrelevant. Halo is awesome because it has very fun multiplayer and the original had coop and tight controls that were way ahead of its time. Halo really influenced the shooter genre a ton.

I could give you quite a few examples of how Halo took a new or rarely used gameplay element and turned it into what is the norm in shooters today. They are all evidence of how good of a shooter Halo really is. 7 million xbots can't be wrong.

I personally prefer more tactical, slower paced shooters over heavy run 'n' gunners, but Halo3 will definately be finding its way into my collection.

Actually, I was disappointed with the weapons in Resistance because I didn't really feel any influence from R&C. R&C is all about crazy weapons that can be upgraded/leveled-up. There were no auto-turrets, no plasma whips, etc... in Resistance. There were a couple of interesting weapons... like the one that can throw up a shield and burrow through solid objects (I forget the name), but most were either pretty standard or not all that spectacular.

I agree with 66. Resistance was fun and the weapons were good, but not in a R&C Zany sorta way. It would actually be cool to have a game with just crazy weird weapons, though it would probably yield wildly unbalanced and bizarre/cheesy online matches.

Let us remeber that when the first killzone 2 trailer was made for e3 there wasn't even a working ps3 at the moment. I had a ps3 i returned it though cause after i beat resistance i had nothing to play. If killzone 2 was ready for the launch of ps3 and they delayed just for resistance you know the game can't look that great. I don't think it will be as mind blowing as gears. some of the effects in the trailer are possible though cause some games on the 360 have certain effects that look like some points in that trailer so we will have to see.

Exactly. I like Resistance and my brother and I had a blast playing through via Co-op. We even went through a second time just to try out the new weapons, but I was still disappointed with the weapons overall given how much I love the R&C series and Insomniac. I was really hoping to see something a bit more creative... not necessarily over-the-top like R&C, but something crazy compared to the average FPS.

Vidikron, wanna know why? Because I like all of Joystiq users have time on my hands to enter a topic on games I don't like and slag them off for no apparent reason other then to say I dislike it :) Does that make you happier? I am within my rights to have an opinion, do I not, or have you recently made a new law stating otherwise? If you have please do tell me.

I just find the genre braindead, there are few or no FPS games that actually use intelligence, they just continue the same routine of shooting what pops up on screen, so to be honest, I don't think either of the two deserve the hypage they get.

Yes, but it isn't like the 360 just isn't going to release anything in that time (the next 2 years). wtf? And they are mostly all sequels. The 360 will have a lot of new IP in that time that I am really looking forward to.

Sorry dude, but it seems you are a bit out of line. You could have just said "I hate all FPS's". Instead, you singled out a particular one, pointed out overused talking point flaws as if you disliked it over others, then capped it with an "oh, btw, I hate all FPS's so my entire paragraph you just read was complete rubbish."

Sorry to pick on you. But it would be the same as I was like LOZ:TP disappointed me for reasons x,y, and z. Oh, btw, I absolutely hate any game that isn't a PC FPS.

Well, it's not like Killzone will be great, or was great. It's just that Halo is not the best FPS ever, nor even remotely close. It's just your typical generic alien shooter, the most overrated mediocre piece of shit ever, but since every retard generic PC game lover out there considers it the best franchise to come out since... well, ever, and it's the only genre that hasn't been well represented on Sony's platforms (like it matters), then Sony wants to nail the last genre they've missed on having under their name. Even if it requires them to focus on retards and monkeys that want to chainsaw every other player with little or no intellect required to do so. At least Killzone has an interesting storyline.

Now, the first Golden-Eye, Half-Life, the original Doom, Counter-Strike, Unreal, and so on are much better FPS than anything the Halo franchise has ever shitted. Hell, it's almost certain that neither Killzone, much less Halo, will be able to top Crysis. Game on, Xbots.

bootsielon,
Okay, I'll bite. You listed some great FPS games. And Halo may not be as good as any (for their times) that you listed. But, if it is the next best one it is still great. I put Halo1-2 easily in the top 10 all-time. My evidence: Copies sold, number of people still playing them, and the influence on the genre.

The first two points are numbers easily proven. Halo2 has the legs of even Counterstrike and sold 8 million to a 25 million userbase. There are still millions of people playing it years later. As for influence on the genre...Just think of Halo the next time you throw a grenade using the grenade button, jump in a game lobby, play coop story, jump really slow :), are limited to holding two guns, hold a button to pick up a gun that replaces the one you are holding, auto-save at checkpoints, have a sniper shot tracer, have enemies retreat and regroup, vehicle multiplayer, fantasy weapon diversity, useful melee, weapons balanced for different situations(most pre-halo games just had good-better-best relationships), etc.

Sure, Halo was not the first to do most of these or even the best. But, it did them all in a very good way at the same time creating a fantastically unique game which has heavily influenced their usage to this date. Single games try to use each above mentioned element, and not by some freak coincidence. They include nearly every facet of Halo. How much you wanna bet Killzone 2 does? The mere fact that games are termed "Halo killers" is a testament to the fact that it is the king of console shooters. People don't talk about SOCOM killers or Counterstike killers.

More people are playing it as we speak than anything except maybe Gears, despite Halo2 being out for so long and being graphically inferior to other options. And the fact that people are trying to copy it without great success. It is a cultural phenomenon. More people are familiar with the name than Metal Gear, Killzone, Resistance, Gears, Counterstrike, etc. It is probably a better known game title than any shooter out there. It is no Mario, but it is a monster in the console shooter arena and has some retardedly dedicated fans.

And yes, Halo3 will be a raging success no matter how much fanboys and alien FPS haters try to call it sucky and over-rated. No game has ever appealed to everyone, so it is only natural for a great like Halo, or Zelda, or FF, or whatever to have its critics. I like shooters but don't care at all for Unreal or Counterstrike and I absolutely love Rainbow 6 Vegas, which is hardly considered the best ever. I'm really not a huge Halo fan, though I thoroughly enjoyed both installments for a good amount of time. I just tend to prefer shooters that aren't run and gun. That isn't going to make me hate on Halo, though.

More ppl are playing counter strike than halo, no matter how blind you are. No one calls FPS games for consoles CS killers...because it is well known that that is simply...impossible.

I never heard of it in South America...Spain or Japan, so please don't generalize. Now if you are talking about Metal gear, now that is another story.

Why is Halo popular? Is this some kind of mass delusion brought upon us by the marketing firm of a company with more money then any of us will ever see in our lifetime? My god. Ive played Halo, and it blows. Its a mediocure shooter at best. Ive had more fun being lagged out of a game of CS. At least GoW tried to go in a new direction with its focus on cover and teamwork. How did Halo with it repetive levels, laughbly balanced weapons and recycled FPS elements manage to move consoles and become some kind of "cult" game? It makes no sense. Someone explain it to me.

And why are there Microsoft "fanboys" at all? My game playing, sci-fi reading, music downloading, anime watching brothers! Dont you see?? The monoplolistic company with an industry dominating adgenda is the enemy, not the foriegn company that likes to introduce lots of failed media formats.

Please stop supporting them. Educate yoursleves. If this continues we will soon live in a world where you can be locked out of your own operating system. DRM and Trusted computing will be the norm.

Consoles and PCs are merging. Do you really want MS there behind the sceens when it happens? Is this why joystiq doesnt report unfovorably on Vista; so as not to upset Microsoft supporters? Am I the only one who draw parrells between all of Vista's "features" and Sony's bad plubliciy?

Fine, Ill shut up now. I know have a better chance of inventing a fucking time machine than convincing anyone here of anything.

I have an xbox360 and a ps3. I will have to admit that I love Halo 2 and also Resistance: Fall of Man. Both are excellent FPS and have excellent on-line play. Killzone was a good game for the PS2. What really hurt the game was the PS2 hardware. It could not perform to the task. Putting the Killzone into the PS3 gets rid of those graphical issues that made the game look bad. Overall all Killzone had a better campaign mode than Halo 2 but it really lacked on online play. As for Killzone 2 demo on the PS3....bring it on! I really do like this game and can not wait to play it on the PS3. I hope it could live up to the hype cause the PS3 really needs a "killer game" and hopefully this could be it. What really hurt the first killzone game was the hardware limitations of the PS2. If the PS2 had a built-in hard-drive and an extra 32 megs of memory, then the game coders could have really made a great game. The plot of the game was deep and look of the game felt like a real "war-zone". The media started calling Killzone a "Halo Killer", not Sony. Anyone who has a bit of knowledge of computers or gaming consoles understands the the Xbox is more powerful than the Playstation 2 period. Thats why a game like Halo and Halo 2 played super on the Xbox and even if Bungie decided to port Halo or Halo 2 to the Playstation 2 (Hell did not freeze over yet) it would not play as good or look as nice.
I will give credit to the coders of Killzone cause I really do like the game and they did do an excellent job of making a good FPS for the Playstation 2. Playing Killzone on a Playstation 3 cleans up all thoses graphical glitches and it has a smoother feel since the 1.50 firmware update.
As for Killzone 2 for the Playstation 3, I hope it will be as good if not better than Resistance: Fall of Man. We all know that Sony has dumped a lot of money into developing this game. If the coders and designers of this game mess this up, it is no fault of Sony but that of the game studio. I have an Xbox360 and a Playstation 3 so I am not a fan of either, just a person who loves to play games. One thing that really annoys me it all these Xbox360 fan boys posting their negative comments about the Playstation 3. If these fanboys really love their system, they should just be playing their games instead of looking for sites on the internet to bash the Playstation 3. How we all forget about the issues the Xbox360 had at its lauch, piss-poor game selection, overheating, no supplies, the famous "Red Ring of Death", no background downloading, only a handful of original Xbox games played on the Xbox360 etc etc etc. No I am not bashing the Xbox360 cause I did buy one at launch and I do like the system, but if you look at the issues that the Playstation 3 had a t launch, it is no better or worse than what the Xbox360 suffered at its launch. I am surprised that no one is picking up on the Wii being D.O.A. A few reports have surfaced about Dead Wiis being bought home (I was a one of them. Bought a Wii at Best Buy and it was D.O.A). I guess everyone was to busy bashing the Playstation 3.
