Sony Pictures producing Metal Gear Solid movie
Shortly after delivering his convergence keynote at this year's D.I.C.E. summit, the vice chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed to Gamespot that Sony's film studio would be responsible for dragging Metal Gear Solid into the cinema. "We're working with the Metal Gear guys," says Yair Landau. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"Lead Metal Gear guy, Hideo Kojima, announced the film at last year's E3, though barely any details have surfaced since then. Apart from crushing the hopes of Dr. Boll, Kojima and co. have said nothing with respect to casting, directing or script. A safe assumption sees Solid Snake strangling inept soldiers and battling at least one psychopath with a penchant for babbling about the philosophical hangups of dropping nuclear bombs ... on the rainforest. The real trick will be to provide a film more entertaining than the infamous Metal Gear Awesome (embedded after the break for old time's sake).
Landau also hinted at an Everquest movie from Sony Pictures, but declined to name the supposedly esteemed producer attached to it. If it winds up being an epic tale of elven mana dealers and over-the-top dragon chases, we'll know it was Jerry Bruckheimer.
Not Safe For Work!

'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'
You do whatever the heck you want because every audience out there expects a video game based movie to be utter crap. I don't think there's any fear of truly disappointing anyone at this point.

Offering a movie deal may be Sony's way of keeping MGS exclusive on the PlayStation.
moofree @ Feb 8th 2007 8:33PM
There should be a TV show. Think 24, but with Solid Snake.
That is, until season 2 with Raiden.

The only way this movie will be good, as any video game movie, is if they stick to the games story line and everything about the game as closly as possible. differnt stuff means disaster. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE! Hideo must have all the say he needs for this movie.
ares04 @ Feb 8th 2007 9:52PM
well hell it is about time! video games have continued to be of higher quality than most of the shitty movies out today.

Ahem... I don't know why they are making a movie. Personally, the games are enough of a movie than anything else. MGS3 is like 10 to 20 hours of gameplay and cenimatics. I'd rather not see them change the plot and characters in hollywoodish fashion. We all know what they did to Silent Hill, please no more of that...
ares04: Uh, you haven't apparently seen any of Uwe Boll's movies have you?
fawazr @ Feb 8th 2007 10:21PM
Is there enough room for both Hideo and his ego inside Sony's pocket?

I disagree with regards to "as any video game movie." Not every videogame IP can work as a movie if simply restricted to the source material. If improvements can be made, even if drastic and totally different, they could actually make the direction of the franchise better.

Save their money this crap won't fly. All the debriefing will kill it.

This movie will most likely suck. Not because metal gear sucks, but because movies based on video games, and vice versa, always suck.
Todd @ Feb 9th 2007 9:44AM
EverQuest is a horrible MMO, and very outdated to boot. A movie based on the franchise wouldn't be so entertaining. A movie based on Warcraft, which features a richer background and history, would be far more entertaining.
farmok @ Feb 9th 2007 11:10AM
I am excited, but worried at the same time about Metalgear becoming a movie. On one hand, movies that are similar to Metal Gear are a dime a dozen, especially if you go to the 80's. My fear is that they try to Hollywoodise it like the Mi sequals.
I guess the other question is who they would cast for the role. Its a shame we can't go back in time and pluck Clint Eastwood.
JohnH @ Feb 9th 2007 11:11AM
For me, this is HUGE news because it is my view that Metal Gear Solid was the first interactive movie and I feel that it is better than most of what comes out of the Hollywood factory today. I too also worry about the translation from game to movie, I mean I consider myself a casual gamer with average skills and it took me 8 hours to get through the first game, then 15 hours for the second, then around 30 hours for the third. How are they going to cut down any of the stories without majorly disappointing the fans?
I have been a fan of X-Men and have been disappointed with all 3 movies, and I remember reading Catch 22 before I saw the movie, and as I was reading it, several times I thought, "I my god they can't cut out this scene!" and "This character is so good they can't cut him out!" When I saw the movie version I was hugely disappointed because it wasn't edited with the grace of a surgeon, but the savagery of a murderer.

I got that quote from a poster named Probot,(I don't remember if he's a regular poster on TV Squad or Joystiq).

the only thing rich about Warcraft is the bank account of the creator of WoW. As for a Movie- IT could be REALLY good if it was based off of a Metal Gear NES game. Why? Cause those games had like 1-2 sentences of story and a game play that was "LOL WTF START ALL OVER?!" So.. they take that... Add the same intro.. Fall out a plane into the wilderness in enemy territory.. and go through all the NES while Mixing in the Japan Metal Gears we never Played. Making Things good for making Metal gear. :] Think about it- It's the most open game to Add whatever bull shit you want while completely following the game to the (mr)T
Alecks @ Feb 9th 2007 11:16AM
Snake Pliskin IS THE ONLY Snake, In my opinion. Kurt russle in his Prime would've been the best Snake. he even had the voice for it. Now the only hope is to have abstact actors. Like Zack Braff as Snake, Adian Brody as Raiden, Antonio Banderes as Liquid Snake, Etc. you can continue adding to the list :D
kyou @ Feb 9th 2007 5:09PM
CG! Please! Make it CG! That's the only way to do videogame based movies! Advent Children is by far the least crappiest videogame movie in history. I just with they had worked with the story a little more...
James Godwin @ Feb 9th 2007 6:36PM
Personally, I can hardly play the games. Not becuase they dont have some of the sweetest gameplay and tactics I have ever encountered, but just because I cant stand listening to everyone talk for ever. For ever hour of gameplay it seems like you have to sit through two hours of people going on and on about the most pointless crap. Seriously, I just want to save my game, I dont want to listen to your dumb ass yammer on about your grandfather in the mountains or some other dumb shit.
So, yeah, Hollywood MGS into an actual action film, because the game seems more like a soap opera than anything else...
