The Playstation ducks return in Super Rub'a'Dub

Sony's Phil Harrison held his D.I.C.E keynote today with the help of some very familiar faces (and we're not talking about Newsweek's N'Gai Croal). Typically seen in the thousands, the rubber duckies of the Playstation brand are Sony's secret weapons when it comes to fancy technical demonstrations. Having paid their dues, the next big thing for the rubber wonders is a Playstation Network title by the name of Super Rub'a'Dub.
Played entirely with the Playstation 3 motion controls, Super Rub'a'Dub has players controlling the alpha duck, herding the little ones together before making a swim for the exit. Sounds like Bubbles to us! Not much else is known about the title, other than it will release in time for the European launch. Now do you believe the wait was worth it?

Gimmick!
CowboyGA @ Feb 8th 2007 3:41PM
I'm not familiar with this title, but the picture makes me think of a free shockwave game. For someone who knows more about this game, is this really going to be a $60 product?
DWells55 @ Feb 8th 2007 3:42PM
I'm not one to whine about Joystiq being biased or anything, but the "Now do you believe the wait was worth it?" comment is a pretty obvious anti-Sony bias thanks to the overwhelming sarcasm. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Sony and I stand by me Wii and 360, but comments like that one aren't really needed unless you're going to have that attitude any time any company slips up.
Steve @ Feb 8th 2007 3:45PM
But, but, but isn't Nintendo the kiddie company? Why would Sony make a game about rubber duckies? Do they slice off each other's heads and fill the bathtub with blood? Do women with big boobs play with them in the tub? It must be something mature like that because, everyone knows, Sony is the "mature" alternative to kiddie Nintendo games!
C. Grant @ Feb 8th 2007 3:47PM
DWells55: Aw, c'mon! It's a joke. Europeans are waiting for PS3s but at least they won't also have to wait for the rubber ducky game! See, it's funny! :)
Grunge @ Feb 8th 2007 3:53PM
Agreed - funny.
Evan @ Feb 8th 2007 4:20PM
I want to wee the video...
Sony used their their rubber duck when they revealed the SIXAXIS controller. In the video of that presentation, the duck's orientation drifts away from the controller's orientation, so that by the end of the video, he has to hold the controller in an awkward rotated manner to make the duck appear straight. (Accelerometers accumulate error over time, so the calculated absolute position will drift more and more away from the starting position as time goes on.) I want to see if they've improved the control at all.
Genius @ Feb 8th 2007 4:20PM
Funny thing is, if this game was for the wii, you guys would be all over it. Then on top of that, somebody has the nerve to call it a gimmick (even if it is), last I checked most of the Wii games are gimmicks.
Neil @ Feb 8th 2007 4:22PM
Sounds like a fun casual game. It's nice to see more original content rather than Flash shareware ports.
ill trooper @ Feb 8th 2007 4:24PM
I think if this came out on the Wii it would likely be heralded as a masterpiece of party gaming, placing empahisis on gameplay rather than graphics, innovative control, thinking 'outside of the box,' etc.
But it's on the PS3. So it's confusing people.
Skwurl @ Feb 8th 2007 4:27PM
"Funny thing is, if this game was for the wii, you guys would be all over it. Then on top of that, somebody has the nerve to call it a gimmick (even if it is), last I checked most of the Wii games are gimmicks."
No.
The funny thing is that after constant remarks that Nintendo and the Wii is nothing but kid games and gimmick controls, Sony goes out and makes a game based on moving virtual rubber duckies around with...accelerometers.
Bravo, Sony.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 8th 2007 4:28PM
Genius, stop being a dipshit. What you said was completely untrue - nobody would be 'all over it' for either system. You're just trying to spread your fanboy propaganda, something that ain't gonna happen as long as I'm still here.
I was positive someone was gonna bring the Wii into this... its terribly ironic that the username of the person who did is 'Genius' because he clearly is not.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 8th 2007 4:30PM
Its truly amazing when PS3 fanboys can't admit that a game coming out for thier own system isn't all that great and instead of facing facts tries to throw another system into the mix.
CowboyGA @ Feb 8th 2007 4:33PM
Is it not just a game where you move a duck around? It's a graphically beautiful version of the "Snake" game that came with windows 95. It's a difficult argument to state that it would be praised on another system.

tryton @ Feb 8th 2007 5:05PM
Aren't you glad you spent 600 + to play duckies lol
Genius @ Feb 8th 2007 5:10PM
lol Fatass of Kickassness Im supposed to be scared of your mighty E-words? Shut the fuck up. What I said is true, the silly amount of support for the massive influx of gimmick Wii games is proof of it. As is your ignorance to the subject.
As far as fanboy propaganda goes, I dont even own a PS3 I own a Wii, and I think the games on it are sickening. If I wanted to play old school games Id dig out my NES and SNES. So, actually, Im a jaded Wii owner not a PS3 fanboy. On the other hand, you Wii fanboys are all over everything Ninty does as long as it has their stamp of approval. Hell, they could ship a pile of shit to your door as long as it has "Nintendo" on it you guys will eat it up.
hiroken @ Feb 8th 2007 5:16PM
This won't cost $60--it's a PSN game, probably $5 - $10 dollars.
And, come on, at least Sony is actually regularly putting stuff up on their network, even if it isn't all AAA titles. VC and XBL do the same thing.

tcc3 @ Feb 8th 2007 5:16PM
I liked this game better when it was called Flicky. Next will Sony have us navigate a duck around a maze, eating bread crumbs? Oh wait Pacman did that one too.
Oh how the mighty (mighty cocky that is) have fallen.
CowboyGA @ Feb 8th 2007 5:21PM
Thanks for the clarity, hiroken. And since there are many Shockwave style games well worth $5, these silly ducks may not be quite the joke they appear. Obviously they aren't pushing the system, but then again, for $5, I wouldn't expect it.
DarkTetsuya @ Feb 8th 2007 5:24PM
That almost makes me wanna buy a PS3.
Almost.

"Hell, they could ship a pile of shit to your door as long as it has "Nintendo" on it you guys will eat it up."
I probably would but Nintendo never did that and likely never will. :)
I'm a jaded Wii owner as well, jaded over the fact what that guy [Phil Harrison] and his bosses say that things I buy are gimmicks rather than going their own direction.
Blaming other gamers for your 'jadedness' is bullcrap. Did you buy a Wii not knowing what you were getting into?
Who's wiser, the 'fanboys' who buy what they KNOW they want, or the 'real gamer/non-fanboy' who ends up disappointed with their $250 expendature?

"Its truly amazing when PS3 fanboys can't admit that a game coming out for thier own system isn't all that great and instead of facing facts tries to throw another system into the mix."
The apples really don't fall far from the tree, I suppose. But I can't blame 'fellow fanboys' either. :P

Any time ^_^
I'm always happy to engage in forum posting with people who have a genuine concern without all the trolling. Most everyone on Joystiq needs to take Thumper's (yes, from the movie Bambi) advice:
If you can't say anything nice, kindly shut your damn face.

tcc3, if you liked Flicky, I think you were the only one :D
tcc3 @ Feb 8th 2007 5:43PM
Dude! Whats wrong with Flicky? It was no Sonic the Hedgehog, but it was fun for a little bit. =)
Next youre gonna tell me that Michael Jackson Moonwalker game was no good.
GabooN @ Feb 8th 2007 5:55PM
My question as a consumer would be where is the value of this 600 dollar gaming system?
Sony needs to get in gear and start making software that warrants its $600 price tag…
DMaY @ Feb 8th 2007 6:11PM
This game sounds like it will be pretty fun. And I completely agree with with what "Genius" says (no sarcasm intended). You fanboys are too arrogant to see it.
Mr Khan @ Feb 8th 2007 6:25PM
Flicky was awesome,

Arrogant? With all the talk of Nintendo 'hypothetically' selling branded poo and the implication that companies crap on their fans, were you or 'Genius' any better by crapping on opinions of people that obviously disagree with you?
Get off yourselves. Say something substancial rather than name-calling or throwing generalizations.
I for one would love to end this but people just have to keep bringing others down, fanboy or not.

Back to the 'other' conversation, I liked Flicky on Sonic Mega Collection.
adrian.defreitas @ Feb 8th 2007 9:01PM
I'd rather see something on my PS3 then nothing at all. Granted, the game isn't going to be the next Final Fantasy, but were you really expecting something with the name "Super Rub'A'Dub" to be a AAA title?
No one game is worth 600 dollars. Stop saying it. It's annoying. Libraries are what make consoles worth the price. Obviously, this game isn't going to be on too many people's "must have" lists, but I'd rather see a developing library than months of nothingness. If anything, this is a step forward (a baby step perhaps, but a step nontheless) in the right direction for Sony.

Ben Hobbs @ Feb 8th 2007 11:16PM
Truly dismal, I do hope that Sony actually have some proper games to release at some point. All these flash mini-games of the like we can all download and play on any PC hardly do any justice to the hardware.
Where are all the games Sony?
NeverSage @ Feb 9th 2007 12:01AM
LOL Tanster "This is the power of the cell!" that was good.
But actually, I'm interested in the game. When I watched Sony's keynote I did find myself wanting to control the ducks. Dunno why. I just wish this game didn't use the silly sixaxis controls.
I could be wrong, but I think Chocolate Starfish's call of "Gimmick!" was a joke, considering that Sony fanboys said the same of the DS and the Wii...
bootsielon @ Feb 9th 2007 1:09AM
Umm, retards... obviously this won't sell you a $600 console, but this coupled with hardcore games plus games for all the family plus... you get the idea.
With the Wii, you get mostly "games for all the family", plus games you already bought for consoles and portables, plus... Zelda. And that's pretty much it.
I'm gonna end up having all three consoles, but I know what I'll be getting unlike you retarded fanboys.

"I'm gonna end up having all three consoles, but I know what I'll be getting unlike you retarded fanboys."
I read that as, "Look at how much I had to pay for someone to listen to my obviously infallable real-gamer opinion.".
Seriously though, why isn't possible for someone SO OBVIOUSLY "SMART" to be respectful?
Pedro @ Feb 9th 2007 7:32AM
How is it that sony can have access to some of the neatest content and technology out there and still make something lame?
The True Gamer @ Feb 9th 2007 8:37AM
Wait, the PS3 fanboys paid $600 to play with RUBBER DUCKIES??? WHAT. THE. FUCK?!

Oh, SNAP!! What's Genius going to say to that?
hiroken @ Feb 12th 2007 2:26PM
Gaboon-- Think about. The system has been out for just over two months. At this time during the 360 launch, gamers everywhere were laughing at all the problems it was having, the lack of games, and blah blah blah. We're still very much in an early adopter stage.
If you want value a shitload of great games for dirt cheap, buy a PS2 or a SNES. Otherwise, give it some time. Go make a sandwich or something.

Title: Review: FunkYellowMonkey (PS3 tag)
Awesome, just awesome - this game is amazing! At first i thought it wasn't all that after seeing how it transitioned from the E3'05 demo but now that i've actually played it and not based my opinion on a negative review (insert well known games review site), this game is really a lil gem! WOW! This game is so addictive it's scary! Think Marble madness crazyness combined with Super Monkeyball tilting
shenanigans in water with gators, this is what this game's all about! The controls are spot on, your in total control and whenever you mess up it is YOUR fault and nobody elses, you'd just brush it off and have another go, and another and another, it's that addictive! hehe. When you come in the top 5 online scores, your replay is automatically uploaded for all the world to see! heehehe
This is a bargain game, costing just under 4 squids ($8), it's definitely a more justifiable/interactive purchase than flOw that's for sure!
Go download the demo, try it, enjoy it, get the fully monty and see for yourself how FUN it really is!
8/10
RUBBER DUCKIES FTW!!!! ^_~
