The boys from Penny Arcade aren't ready to talk about their eponymous
episodic adventure just yet but they did just send out an additional promotional shot that dropped a few hints. First, the large red eyes spotted in the first piece of
promotional art certainly looked like the eyes of our fruit fornicating friend (
as seen here), but what about those sprocket shoulders? And he's big, but those don't look like
Prime's shoulders ...
And what about that gun? Even with self-funded independent projects like this -- "an RPG in short" -- is it possible to get away from guntacular gameplay? I'll leave the rest up to you dear readers. The game is due out for the Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms "when it's done" with console releases expected thereafter.

Hopefully it'll at least be fun... PA rocks.
ManiacPenguin @ Feb 9th 2007 5:53PM
I'm getting a feeling it's going to be a little on the "lovecraftian" side, but im sure its just me.
juv3nal @ Feb 9th 2007 5:56PM
looks steampunk-ish
Jonathan Gardner @ Feb 9th 2007 6:23PM
The sprokets would make sense considering the era they appear to be going for. And it really doesn't matter if this game is good or not: we are all going to buy it because it's Penny Arcade. AmIRight?
Rubang B @ Feb 9th 2007 6:56PM
I'll buy this game just because they made that one donation to humiliate and destroy Jack "Big Liar" Thompson.

PA have been using a lame tactic to promote their game and protect it from bad reviews.
They started to use their popularity to throw the idea around that IGN and the likes rarely give low scores to games from big time developers. The fact is most game reviews out there are on average quite accurate, their whole "reviewers get paid to give an 8 to a game that deserves a 5!" is bull. They are doing this because they want to protect their game from the impact of a potential low score from big sites (whom in turn are less likely than fanboys to give the game a high rating just because it's PA).
Since their views on IGN, 1Up, Gamespot, etc., have been widely publicized on their own website they are effectively going to pass the blame of a low review score on the above sites' supposed "vengeance" on PA.
Maybe it will be good, maybe not, but PA is definitely attacking those websites for this reason alone. Oh and the title of the game is rather terrible (at least if they plan to market it outside of their bubble).
SNES Link @ Feb 9th 2007 7:16PM
Well, Phil, to be honest with you: Penny Arcade has been mocking review sites for much longer than this game has been in development. That, coupled with the fact that the creative powers behind Penny Arcade aren't money grubbing bastards. These are two gamers who've criticized the industry so long and so successfully that they have decided to put their money where their mouths are. I would not think them to be so petty that if their game were to receive a low score that they would merely claim it revenge. That is, unless the reviewer specifically labeled it as such.

Or Phil, the acutally have OPINIONS and not some wierd ulterior motives. The whole world isn't a conspiracy theory...
Morder @ Feb 9th 2007 7:24PM
When are they going to release an actual "graphic novel" (hate that phrase)...I'd love to see their artwork in a comic book form.
NeverSage @ Feb 9th 2007 7:48PM
Do you ever hear someone's opinion and the only way you can make sense out of it is if this person is from an alternative universe who just popped in for a quick post? So where ya from Phil?
Tacoman @ Feb 9th 2007 7:52PM
@9
They already have 2 comic collections out in print with another 2 on the way this year. Each volume is an annual collection with commentary on some comics from PA, but nothing cohesive like a full novel. Still may want to check it out, they're available in bookstores now.
funnelbc @ Feb 9th 2007 8:26PM
It does indeed seem to evoke lovecraftian steam punk and personally that makes me squeal like a cheerleader. I really hope that they are able to bring their humour, art-style and great writing to the game in a way that gels well.
Also to phil who everyone here seems to think is from planet tard, the title goddamn rocks. Better than Penny Arcade Adventures or PA:DS or whatever else generic they could have conceivably called it. It shows their style and flair for doing it their way.
gLitterbug @ Feb 9th 2007 8:30PM
Phil is the new Milkman.
Cory @ Feb 9th 2007 8:44PM
Christopher Grant, why would you call this game Penny Arcade's "eponymous episodic adventure"? Eponymous means "giving one's name to." A band's self-titled ablum is eponymous - they gave their name to the album, or conversely, the album's name is derived from the band name. Romulus, the founder of Rome, is another obvious example. This game certainly doesn't seem to fit - sure, it has the Penny Arcade Adventures badge in a transparent and miniscule form towards the bottom of the poster, but the title is clearly "On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness."
I actually really like that title - very dramatic, as is everything Tycho writes. His description of their quest to make carrot cake soup is one of the funniest things I have ever seen online.

i would bet that none of the released art/posters whatever they are will have anything to do with the game itself. Don't speculate about the content based on something that Mike probably drew for fun and then attached a title too. I've been reading PA for over 5 years, and i'd say there is no method to their maddness.
bill pullman @ Feb 10th 2007 3:52AM
PA? humorless trash. hope the game is... well, no the game's gonna be boring too.
Steve @ Feb 10th 2007 6:32AM
ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz....huh wha? A new game from the King Of The Nerds themselves? Wow, I can hardly con...ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......
MrTroy @ Feb 10th 2007 11:50AM
Well I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who things this game will not be all that great. I mean it'll be nice to see their style of art, done in a self made game(Not an add on or somethin else) We'll just have to wait and see.
Grant @ Feb 10th 2007 2:53PM
to start off, i love PA.
i have visited their site 3 times a week(or more) for the last 5-6 years running.
As for that comment by "phil", if you have been reading them for long enough, you would know that their stance on IGN/Gamespy/1up has always been the same, i doubt when they were starving kids just looking to make some comics about video games, they were really just beginning a master plot to eventually make their own game... which has never been done before by someone who comes straight out of a webcomic past.
that being said, they are not making the game themselves but watching over it in a fashion that Miyamoto might do with a mario game. Even though i love the "news" post, and the comic, i am skeptical about the game being fun to play. As for being Funny, we're guarenteed such, but that can't exactly make it a great game.
and their "bubble", it's a few million small, i think the title won't have any negative effect what so ever.
and people enjoy long wierd titles recently, it's been a fairly recurring trend in popular music the last year or so.
