Wii wrist weights? Why?

OK, we know the whole Wii as window to weight loss fad is big right now, but we can't for the life of us figure out what would inspire someone to create these prototype Wii-branded exercise weights and then shop them around to investors for mass production. For one thing, similar wrist weights are already available in practically any sporting goods store for just a few bucks. You can even get them in a stylish white to match your Wii and remote. For another thing, we're pretty sure using the Wii logo like this on a marketed product without the explicit approval of Nintendo is just asking for a world of legal trouble.
Still, the idea of using wrist weights while working out with your Wii isn't a bad one. Reminds us of those Dragon Ball characters who used weighted clothing to lower their power level as they took on their friends in Wii Sports boxing. Or something.

I can see it now, these weights fly off your wrists & destroy your TV. Just weight & see.
C. Grant @ Feb 9th 2007 2:52PM
"weight & see"
Tell me that was intentional!
Intentless @ Feb 9th 2007 2:52PM
Yes, weight and see...... pun intended? anyway that is a pretty good idea if you are actually looking for some muscle toneing...
Shmil @ Feb 9th 2007 2:54PM
hehe pun
Neal @ Feb 9th 2007 2:56PM
lame.
john @ Feb 9th 2007 3:10PM
Why?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's to make money off a pop culture meme.
What do I win?
Taedirk @ Feb 9th 2007 3:11PM
So what you're saying is if I train with these, my power level will be over 9000?
TheBigC @ Feb 9th 2007 3:14PM
I only play Wii sports at 1% of my power anyway...
Mitsuo @ Feb 9th 2007 11:08PM
I just have to be the first to say it, but Goku and Piccolo were the first ones(that I can remember) to use weighted clothes. Tien may have along with Yamcha, but I dunno.
RexDart @ Feb 9th 2007 3:46PM
Heh, I like how Kyle tried to slip in a DBZ reference but pretend not to be a fan, because it's not cool :)
Make your own choices and you'll be happier.
Zertoss @ Feb 9th 2007 3:32PM
It doesn't make a bit of difference guys. The balls are inert.
Intentless @ Feb 9th 2007 3:34PM
UNBELIEVABLE!! His power is off the charts...
KapsLocked @ Feb 9th 2007 3:38PM
Hmm... that's not a bad idea. *runs to Big5*
Jay @ Feb 9th 2007 3:49PM
I've actually been told by a few trainers that wrist weights, in general, are not very good for you or your bones. People could develop long term arthritis; it doesn't take much weight for it to happen, either.
So, I hope nobody tries to sell this junk.
TopaZ @ Feb 9th 2007 4:00PM
I use wrist and ankle weights and a weight vest while Wii'ing. (No, not these branded ones -- You can get 20 lb'ers for $10 ea at Amazon). It works out great!
schlomo @ Feb 9th 2007 4:05PM
i would never weight any joint in my body without doctor's instructions...
is @ Feb 9th 2007 4:28PM
Nah. What really needs to be made is a dedicated workout game with a selection of acessories tailored to the wii. Dumbells that you can strap your wii to with wario-esque on screen game-feedback. A chest attatchment that can make a game out of doing situps and squats.
It will sell quadrillions, just for being a gamer-nerd/weight loss crossover. Patant pending.
df @ Feb 9th 2007 4:39PM
nice DBZ comments guys :P
TopaZ @ Feb 9th 2007 4:40PM
You are NOT weighting joints. Wearing a wrist weight is NO DIFFERENT than holding a dumbbell of the same weight. You only put your joints in jeopardy if you do high-impact activities (jumping, running, etc.). So says my orthopedist.
Anonymous @ Feb 9th 2007 4:53PM
With these weights your powerlevel will BE OVER NINE THOUSANDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT?! NINE THOUSAND??!?!?!
But really, they are gonna get sued. Probably just hoping nintendo will like the idea and license it.
Rubang B @ Feb 9th 2007 5:06PM
I already got Reebok wrist and ankle weights, 5 pounds per limb, for an extra 20 pounds for Wii Sports. They didn't have white (or any options at all), so my wrist weights are blue and my ankle weights are red. And I didn't want to mess up my stats, so I made some new Miis that are super buff and awesome to exercise with. Their names are Buff Sean, Buff Sven, Buff Stan, and Buff Stu. If you see any of those in your Mii Parade, you'll know where they came from.
I can still do pretty good at tennis with the weights on, and it makes bowling feel more realistic (but harder), and golfing is just impossible now.
slasherx @ Feb 9th 2007 5:37PM
Erm, why would I want my right hand to become stronger than my right even more? :X eep.
Car2oon @ Feb 9th 2007 5:51PM
Hooray for making it harder to play games on the Wii! ;)
LongshotX @ Feb 9th 2007 6:15PM
This Wii craze just seems to be such a gimmick. Now the thing is a pop culture icon. And where are the games? Wii Sports and Zelda, and only one of those has any real depth.
Steve 3.2 @ Feb 9th 2007 7:16PM
Anyone thinking of using ankle or wrist weights should consider the greater chance for injury associated with using them. I would not recommend wearing these while playing Wii Sports.
pixelator @ Feb 10th 2007 2:17PM
"OK, we know the whole Wii as window to weight loss fad is big right now..."
No, it really isn't.
Rubang B @ Feb 9th 2007 8:23PM
As a person who has played Wii Sports with 5 pounds on each ankle and 5 pounds on each wrist, I must confess: it has made me super buff. So watch out or I'll crush you.
Disgruntled Goat @ Feb 9th 2007 10:11PM
You gotta love how someone can emerge from the woodwork with an idea so derivative it makes Cliffy B look like Jules Verne, then hype it up on every major game site as though interested investors, if any exist, would actually need to work with them to get this product off the ground - like they need these geniuses to figure out how to slap a Wii logo on a fabric bag filled with sand.
KRAMER: Look at this, they're making Wii weights.
JERRY: Oh, wrist weights for use with the Nintendo Wii? Yeah, that’s a good idea.
KRAMER: Of course it’s a good idea, it’s my idea. I conceived this whole project two years ago.
JERRY: Which part? The licensing of the brand name you don’t own part or spending the two hundred million you don’t have part?
Jonob @ Feb 9th 2007 11:41PM
The reason why this would be good is when you play wii sports, games such as tennis and baseball when your swinging your arm around, theres nothing to take the force besides your shoulder. Your simply flicking your arm around making it hurt after awhile. The weights would take away some of the pressure.
jleicht12006 @ Feb 10th 2007 12:46AM
they used weighted clothes, yes, but not to conceal their power levels, that was a technique they used, the clothing had nothig to do with their power level supression, but they used weighted clothes in training to make them stronger and faster. sorry, just had to point that out. call me a dbz fanboy or whatnot, i deserve it, i just wanted to point it out
Nathan @ Feb 11th 2007 6:57PM
Hello the guardian from Lady in the Water, you'll have one big arm and one small one.
Jen @ Feb 18th 2007 11:57AM
Wrist weights are great for arms - but, frankly, you'll be safer and see better results if you use a weight vest. They're use in the upper levels of some martial arts training to add power, gain more muscle, etc. Adding weights does work (this is why heavier people lose weight more rapidly), but you have to add more than a couple of pounds to each arm to actually use weights to kick you out of a weight loss plateau.
