Columbia Pictures acquiring Metal Gear movie rights, Ghost Rider producer onboard
Columbia Pictures, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, is reportedly in negotiations with Konami for the rights to adapt Metal Gear Solid for the cinema; as breifly noted by Sony exec Yair Landau earlier this week at D.I.C.E. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia has assigned Ghost Rider producer Michael De Luca to the project, while MGS creator Hideo Kojima and JEA's Rick Privman will serve as executive producers. Privman is also the executive producer of the upcoming film version of survival horror game Siren.Sony producers Doug Belgrad (The Grudge 2) and Sam Dickerson will also be involved with the live-action adaptation; and Josh Bratman, who works for De Luca and introduced the project to Sony, will continue to act as a consultant. Plot details and casting prospects remain unknown.

Please Sony, sign Ryuhei Kitamura for the director. He and Kojima are good friends, he's a great director, and did a superb job with Twin Snakes. He's perfect.

I wonder if this will be more succesful than Halos run for the theaters.

Should have more luck than Halo. Sony actually owns a movie studio. Maybe it'll motivate Microsoft to push Halo ahead.

I hope they don't ruin the game franchise with this movie. It won't destroy it of course, but it will give it a black eye if the movie is bad.

Metal Gear seems to fit perfectly into the movie medium. I can't remember a single game->movie adaptation which was good, so let's hope this one sets the standard. (AC was good, but it wasn't a direct game translation.)

I really wish they would opt for a CGI movie instead. A live-action Metal Gear wouldn't feel right to me, especially without David Hayter.

I don't mean to be too much of a pessimist here, but it's likely going to suck, just like EVERY OTHER VIDEO GAME MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, EVER. But maybe this'll actually come out good. (Right.) I hope so, though; Metal Gear Solid is too good of a franchise to get this kind of crappy treatment.

mmmm... Milking products to death.... Produce skim milk, condensed milk, homogenized milk, and even chocolate milk with the same cow but I'll be damned if they make this movie out of goat milk and expect it to be just-as-good.

If Metal Gear Solid is adapted to film then David Hayter better play Snake's character, or at least have him dubbed over whatever Snake look-alike they have.
Hayter is the all-known voice of Snake. This movie will most likely see less anticipation if he's not involved.

WHY?!?! It's BASED ON MOVIES in the first place! Why are they making a movie based on a game that's based on movies?
And what's to watch? It's really very plot-thin.
nick @ Feb 10th 2007 11:18PM
Columbia Pictures?? Has any movie carried the name Columbia Pictures since Sony acquired the company, and changed the name to Sony Pictures? Why the sudden resurfacing of the old name? Do they not want people to know they're making a movie about a game that's popular on their own console?

Fuck that >< Ryuhei Kitamura is "ok," but he's not awesome, either. I mean, sure, he did some cheesy/awesome demo directing in TTS, but have you EVER watched "VS"? I'm sorry, but he's a shitty director. I wouldn't let him get anywhere near a hollywood MGS film.
Josh V @ Feb 11th 2007 12:49AM
um Columbia Pictures still make movies. Ghost Rider is one of them and it still uses its logo.
Sly @ Feb 11th 2007 2:35AM
Movie full of directives and debriefing along with a dull storyline thats guarantee to put you asleep.
Danger @ Feb 11th 2007 12:38PM
Likelyhood that Uwe Boll directs?
:)

I can only name a COUPLE game to movie adaptations out of the MANY movie adaptations of video games that were good; however I could see this being one hell of a great film or the biggest flop since Street Fighter the Movie.
I just hope for everything good and holy that Hayter has something to do with this, the cyborg ninja costume looks awesome AND the Metal Gear being made for it looks good, otherwise I will refuse to see it and take it anywhere near seriously.
Hell, I'll put together all the cutscenes and codec sequences from MGS series and make something feature length from it... and maybe do just as good a job IF the film is just THAT BAD.... not that I'm hoping it will be bad, but that's just my 2 cents.
