GoW running on a PS3 ... not so much
54
Hey Playstation fans, we know you love our Gears of War, but what's up with the fake YouTube videos? A person by the name of somma12345 posted a video (the one above) "proving" that he is able to get Gears running on his Playstation 3. He even goes through all the trouble to film behind his TV, film all the connectors, and film his controller during gameplay, but forgets to turn on the lights. Yeah, it's one of those too dark to tell what the hell we're watching videos. In the end we're supposed to settle for a elementary explanation of how he changed a few files around, burned a new disc, and voila! Instant PS3 version of Gears. We're throwing our BS flag on this one and warn you somma12345 to never disgrace the Gears name by putting it anywhere near that shiny black box. We're nice though and will cut you some slack, because we understand your pain man ... the world is indeed a lonely place without Gears.
[Thanks, Machiavelli 420]

Rofl in no way is this possible in the computer world. You can't just copy some files around on a disc to make the code magically work for the ps3's cpu. The Architecture of the ps3's cell processer and that of the Xbox 360's is totally differnt it is impossible without totally changing the code at source level.

Uh huh. The *only* way that would be remotely possible is if there was an Xbox 360 emulator available for Linux. And there isn't. And that's not what he's claiming anyway. STFU & GTFO, I say.

Bwahahahaha! PS3 sucks so bad that the poor shlubs who got suckered into buying one have resorted to this while they wait for the potential of the mighty cell to be unlocked at some future date or something and rule the world with an iron fist! No games to play. Might as well make up some fantasy. It sad really.

he's not changing source code; he's changing a "few files around", which in dumbass who has no idea about what he's talking about terms means he's full of crap.
honestly though, why do they post this lame crap on this site; this belongs on some lame myspace page or youtube.

All he does is insert a DVD containing a video clip of starting and playing a new game of Gears - which he probably found from a random game review site (like IGN and co.).
(Hence why he nav's through the PS3 menu structure so quickly so you can't read it).

Dude needs to use his brain. If it was that simple to get Gears up and running on PS3 Epic would have the damn thing out tomorrow. Does he really think Epic would pass up free money?
Don't know what the trick is, don't care, all I know is you must be pretty desperate for a decent game to play on PS3 if you have to hack up another console's exclusive title.

i would be more likely to believe this if i didn't know you can't get the ps3 to just emulate the 360 by moving a few files around.
unless it's running at like 5 fps. It would be cool if it is true but.. im not going to hold my breath that this is.
mythor, irrespective of this, epic wouldn't port it across because it was produced by microsoft studios and so they are under contract to keep it exclusive.

If you watch while the game is "Loading" you see a cut in the video. You can see that the screen jumps and cuts and he could hav someone there with him with a wireless controller or it is a video if anything.

the only reason he would do this is because he envies the people who bought a 360 because we have gears and a bigger better game collection and a working controller. its still bs considering that he probably doesnt know Sh!t about coding on cell processor or the 360 processor.

Right before he pauses the game he looks up and fires but his thumbs don't move. Then right after that his hands just disapear. If you watch the reflection in the top left coner of his tv for the whole video you'll see that its different when he's "playing" Gears. I think thats because he just set up another tv right infront of the one running his PS3. As for the blue light around the screen, heh, thats not a Phillips plasma with ambilight. Not thats the screen of the back tv being reflected back on the wall. This isn't even good editing what with his hands fading in and flat out disapearing.
Oh, and why would a game that is burned on the disc he inserted need to load from the hard drive?
Bullshit. Not even good bullshit. Pathetic bullshit.

Technology etc ignored, I do believe that Gears of War is actually MS's Intellectual property..
Meaning that even IF Epic wanted to do it, they legally couldn't.
Also meaning that if this kid did it successfully(which he obviously didn't) his ass would be sued.

If you think I am a fanboy for what I am about to say go ahead and think that but this is coming from someone that was/is (kinda) a PC gamer.
First off... Anyone tried extracting source code? yeah thats what I though not many people have the know how and the resources/time for it. Not just that but you would have to have an extreme knowledge about the cell processor because the architecture of it is so much different from conventional cpu's. So the only way you would be able to get that knowledge is from the makers of the card (IBM) or Sony. But there is legal issues if you want to explain what you are trying to do.
What I am trying to say here is there is so much programming and tweaking you would have to do to make it even somewhat playable. This little project would take hundreds of man hours not to mention the legal issues if Microsoft or Epic wanted to take action.

Imagine if this "file swapping" was true and any 360 game could be played on a PS3 and any PS3 game on a 360. That would be awesome. Too bad the architecture of the two consoles leaves this busted. (Hopes for MGS4 and FFXIII ports.)

The guy has filmed Gears being played on the same TV using a 360 before filming the PS3 part. Then simply edited the footage shot earlier onto the TV.
Look how the TV is dead square in the shot. And also notice how the colour around the edge of the TV is different, It's being cast by the orginal underlying picture.
So to wrap. It's a superimposed shot of gears filmed from the exact same spot, layered via editing skills over the PS3 screen.

here is real prof that this is fake:
Here is his original video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAgGeyNmoWI&mode=user&search=
And here is another one he tried to post explaining it in more detail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPCjrWmx2r0&mode=user&search=
if you cue both videos so they are at the point he starts playing, and watch them simultaneously you will see that they are the exact same, from the selecting of menu items to the movement of the player.

It is just good editing. You can tell exactly when the video is cut. when he says "Now into the game if you watch the screen, his PS3 loading has a faint blue hint to it. It's supposed to be Black. But then when Gears is supposedly loading up, the screen is pitch Black" meaning his XBOX hook up has a higher fidelity than the PS3 cause there's no blueish tint. AND when he goes to shut down the PS3 the Blue tint is back!
lol, the lengths people will go!

You 360 fanboys are serious freaks...the things you get your panties in a twist about!
Don't get me wrong, I get a ton of enjoyment out of my 360 and my PS3...well it's basically for playing Blu-Ray movies, but that's what I bought it for (cheaper than the stand alone players). I firmly believe that the 360 is the better machine to own for gaming (and playing HD-DVDs!). But jeebus, why go all postal over some sad fool making a faked video. And why give him all the free PR?

Gears Runs on the Unreal Engine.
The Unreal Engine Runs Fine on the PS3.
While this YouTube thing is undoubtedly a Fake, my point is that Gears would Run Perfectly Fine on the PS3.
Gears is not Coming out for PS3 because Epic got money from Microsoft to keep it an Exclusive.
But to Shut Up all You guys who must work for Microsoft.
Unreal Engine runs on PS3 = Gears would Run on PS3.

For practical purposes the "Cell" processor and the 360's core isn't all the different. The CPUs are both PowerPC based. The key difference is that the 360 has THREE PowerPC cores whereas the cell only has ONE. It's no surprise that multi-platform games ported to the PS3 don't run that hot (framerate issues, etc). Sony Fanboy comments on the "raw power of the cell" processor are pretty much baseless when it comes to the general CPU.
Now, how on earth could you Gears of War on a PS3? Well, if you had a game using the Unreal Engine 3, you might be able to shuffle content around and trick the game into using it. Skinning and replacing character models isn't out of the question. I'll go so far as to suggest such a thing is possible.
Of course, there are no Unreal Engine 3 games available on the PS3 right now. So hacking a franken-app together with Gears artwork and models isn't going to happen. Even if a game was available, it wouldn't be "emulation" and I'd bet that textures optimized for the 360 wouldn't run well with only 256MB of video memory on the PS3.
The hoaxer has presented a "seamless" experience using their own homemade Blu-Ray disk. I'm not even sure if this has been accomplished for native Sony PS3 titles, let alone burning 360 game. The "No Modchips" comment further dilutes credibility that the disc was even readable.

yeah he recorded from the same angle his 360 playing gears, then moved around the video.. when he wished to in standart video editing software, or he just played a gameplay video from DVD :P
one of the two. but 1st version looks more real, since the TV screen was wierd, and u could see one picture on top of the other. T_T

So am I a disgrace since my PS3 sites about a Wii-width away from my Xbox 360? Or is that still a safe distance? LOL
Anyway, you could get into how "switching around files" isn't enough to recompile/rewrite a game for the Newmotion er Cell Processor. But the video clip of his hands on the controller was obviously added afterwards, or someone else was in the room. This could have been switched at any time during the dark screens. But I vote video disc.
That's a bit too elaborate...why waste time on faking this crap? The PS3 is a horrible horrible console...why take after Sony with the lies?
