That rewards thing for xbox achievements is the first thing I've heard that placed the achievements in a better light.

I'm still in disbelief that gamers are hooked on getting these tacked on acheivements developers are FORCED into placing in the game.

What the hell ever happened to playing a game to beat it or for FUN? For a challenge? Something other than making a worthless number go up.

Xbox live achievements are just as ridicluous as the people that only play a games for em are.

People CAN still play games just for the fun. It's not like the drive won't spit out the disk until you've gained enough points. And there is a challenge in the individual achievements. It's fun to get them, and there is a challenge in obtaining them all(excluding a few launch titles and UNO.)

Also, you're talking as if fairly worthless points are NEW to gaming. Ever hear of Pac-Man? Invaders? Tetris? Many of the great early games had the main goal of raising an arbitrary number to make it higher than the other guys, to get your initials on the top of the screen. It's really a natural progression of an idea that has been with gamers since the earliest arcade. Hell, it's been with us through pinball machines, pre-Pong.

So yeah, I really don't see the problem. O_o

and yeah I know I'm an achievment hater. I just don't like how developerts don't use them to fit the game better.

Dead Rising did a few good things with 'em like unlockable costumes and what not. More games need to follow suit. Otherwise the achievements seem like a copout to add longevity to a game.

Next there's going to be a "Pay $5!" achievement.

Come up with better stuff, guys. It's all in the developers hands. I love achievement points, personally, but only when they are a challenge and not this tacked-on self-promotional bullcrap.

Personally, I thought it was an awesome idea to add a gamer score to the xbox live community. It's just fun to get, like scoring high on old arcade games (like previously mentioned). Think how cool it'd be to have that for EVERY game you've ever played, cross platform. Sort of a dossier of gaming mountains you've climbed. Like one for beating Devil May Cry 3 on the hardest setting, for beating Ruby and Emerald weapon in FF7, getting Tofu in Resident Evil 2. It's basically in my opinion a way to keep your friends from calling bullshit when you say you did ultimate task X in Y game.

Plus, I play a *LOT* of single player games. The idea that I have a score that accumulates as I game is pretty cool. Shows me how much time I've wasted with my life =)

And yes, to me, it does extend the life of a game. Its like adding an extra level, a new difficulty and goal that just isn't more storyline. If Gears of War didn't have them, almost nobody I know would be playing ranked matches, and personally I wouldn't be replaying it through insane/hardcore. But since it suggests doing it, I grabbed my buddy across the states with co-op mode and we're working our way through it. It's a blast, and gives me more reason to play this 6 hour short game. Basically it's like the "challenge" FAQs on GameFAQs, only you have proof you did it. Like FFX's "no sphere grid / magic" challenge, God of War's "No Harpy Eye" challenge, etc.

Besides, if the gamer score and achievement system annoys you because it adds "stupid" challenges or whatever, just ignore them and the gamer score then. Chance are you're just hating on it because all your friends have way higher gamer scores than you. Why else would you whine about something you can ignore so easily, since it doesn't impact gameplay?

"Why else would you whine about something you can ignore so easily, since it doesn't impact gameplay?"

I could easily ignore it if it didn't ruin some friendships(not really ruin but, read on).

Some friends of mine have ONLY been playing games that have achievements to unlock. They feel like they're doing something with themselves. I know there are plenty of other gamers who do the same thing, as its a big topic of discussion on xboxlive chatter. Some gamers seemingly have become obsessed over it.
That said, some friends of mine would rather play some lame 360 game for its achievments rather than come over to play MarioKart64 with me. Yeah, they're dumbasses for only playing a game to increase a number, but there are lots of gamers like that.

The 360 achievements are pointless(except with this little giveaway MS is doing). They don't add anything to games that someone couldnt decide to do on their own. They don't do anything to enhance games. They only add artificial longevity since people think they have to do what it tells em to.

I ignore them when I play 360 games. But not everyone else does, and that leads to problems. Problems with gamers only playing for the achievments. That leads to other problems when achievments must be met in online play. Gears of War for example. You get a lousy teammate in your game attempting to get a 100 kill with a certain weapon achievement. They know damn well they shouldnt take a weapon when it would be far better in the hands of a skilled player, but they run and grab it before anyone else anyway. Its caused a fair amount of lost matches. I havent played in months, so maybe thats died down. But you can clearly see how achievements ruin the fun for some gamers. namely me.

KC a rebuttal for you:

Who are you to tell other people how they should have fun? If someone likes to set a goal of earning points, and then achieve that goal, they get a sense of satisfaction. Why are you so high and mighty to tell them that's a bad thing. Let people have fun how they want to have fun.

There are so many things in so many games that I only tried because there was an achievement for it. I wasn't just "druging through" the game to get the achievement, I was having fun the entire time. There was more than one occasion where I had much more fun with a game than I would have without achievements (such as dead rising). Why would I want to try to do something like get 100% accuracy with a machine gun clip for no reason if there was no achievement. I did do it because there was one, and it was a fun and challenging experience. I played dead rising probably 2-3x more than I would have without achievements, and I had a blast for every moment of it. These were not things I would have had fun doing without the reward of achievements.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully aware I'm only unlocking a little picture onto my gamercard, but guess what...people will do things like play a FF game, and put 30+ hours more than they need to to beat the game just to kill some hidden boss. When its dead, they are just done with the game and nothing to show for it. At least with achievements they could get a little recognition that will always be attached to their gamercard, for anyone to see.

Oblivion is another GREAT example of achievements, I wasn't really into the guild thing, but since there were achievements for completing all the guilds, I did so, and ended up liking the guild quest lines more than the main story quest line.

I could go on and on, but the bottom line KC, is don't tell other people how they should have fun, that's not your place.

Yeah this never happened in Halo 2 in BTB over the brute shot, rocket launcher or sniper.

Seriously, ever consider the fact that just *MAYBE* your friend enjoys getting achievements? Who are you to say that he has to come over and play and old ass game with you because in your mind, "its more fun than increasing numbers that do nothing". If you think that's "ruining your friendship" because he rather play something else?(maybe he just doesn't wanna be mean and is tired of seeing you?)

"They know damn well they shouldnt take a weapon when it would be far better in the hands of a skilled player, but they run and grab it before anyone else anyway."

---Uhh... Dude, you ever consider the benefits of these achievements? It encourages players to try new weapons, all the weapons, instead of just sticking with the two they're comfortable with? I never got good or even really tried to with the battle rifle or sniper in Halo2 because I was good with the shotgun and sword, so why bother try a new venue? I can honestly say I rock with all the weapons in Gears now because those achievements forced me to go down a path I wouldn't have otherwise. In short, it made me a better player. If your teammate rushes the gun, then let him rush the gun. Why are you playing Ranked matches anyways then if you hate that stuff? You can group up with friends, and you have to deal with achievement getters. Just play Player matches then since you don't care about achievements.
