We've got 'em, leaked Halo 3 alpha screen grabs [update 1]

It's time to unleash your inner Halo fanboy, because we have some goodies for you. Hot off the screen grab black market, we've received some fresh Halo 3 alpha screenshots for your viewing pleasure. German website Evo-X posted seven un-seen screen grabs of the Halo 3 alpha build. And surprisingly enough, the quality of the shots is pretty good. From these new screens we noticed the HUD has a slight concave effect and can clearly see the new spike grenades situated on the top left. There are also a few shots that showcase a letter/number combination over teammates heads, which is either their login name, some sort of alpha crud, or has something to do with the rumored military rank. Ok, enough reading already! We're proud to present all seven leaked Halo 3 alpha screen grabs after the jump ... but remember guys these are shots of the alpha version.

Update 1: It looks like Evo-X has crippled under the server stress. But our readers are a resourceful bunch.

Looks great for an Alpha. =)

The concave is caused by master cheifs visor which bleeds in the edges like we've seen in Metroid Prime, and the HUD is sorta projected on his screen. Although not in the beta, apparently they are gonna do visual effects like frosting and glare on the visor, which is rad because that worked so awesomely well in metroid prime.

The number/letters replace the icons that floated above peoples head in halo 2. easier to understand, and give orders

Kevin is right. I already read that somewhere too. Letter Number Combo is good because
"Hey bumble bee in a red semicircle, you're getting sniped!"
isn't as easy as
"A4 sniper on you."

Or something like that.

can someone host these somewhere else. i HAVE to see these.

and as for the letter/# to identify teammates, i hope there is an option to switch between this and the old symbols.

reason why is because when i play with teammates, as in the same 3 guys ive played with for the past 3 years, its much easier just to look at the symbol and identify the player by the colors. i think having to focus in and read the numbers/letters would take a few milliseconds longer. and as cheesy as it sounds, those milliseconds are necessary.

And the Intertubes, they be clogged.

Great graphics for an Alpha! Needs improvement for a final product, which obviously they will. I like the visor effect.

The numbers above players' heads is their call sign. It was covered it the 1Up article. It's because it's easier to yell at a call sign then a logo of a skull or some long gamertag.

I'm just *very* disapointed with the 'rocks' geometry.
Everything else looks nice right now =]

Wow, let's get disappointed because of an alpha game release. Clearly people do not understand development.

Maybe people clearly understand game development... and fanatics can't stand a construtive feedback about the current estate of the game (everyone knows what a alpha build is... but I didn't know you could not talk about them! ;] )

i just hope for some videos soon before the beta gets released

I know its a Demo/alpha ,and i know it still in development,and i understand they arent the best high quality pics in the world, but those look like halo 2 graphics, iw as expecting sumthing more to the WOW effect. Thats my opinium, i prob wont buy this, but if u guys say its really good,i might down..... it

@prod - while everyone has an opinion and you stated the facts that i could throw right back, looknig at it from a technical standpoint it could look almost as good as GOW, particularly the shot with the classic halo 1 gun, despite the shakey shot and everything, the way the sun bounces off the terrain and the contract between outdoors and indoors really wow's me.

It's hard to fully judge these screens since they're from an alpha but I have to agree they look more like Halo 2.5, especially when compared to Gears of War. The Unreal Engine has really set the graphics bar at a new level and it looks like Bungie has its work cut out for it.

Ride,thanks for not bashing me, maybe im making quick assumptions, ill wait for more pics and videos. I just wish they didnt keep this so god dawm secret , anywho well see, c ya guys.

Not only is this Alpha but its also not a direct screen capture and thus it lessens the image quality...
