Kirby, Ice Climber, and Kid Icarus reunite on Wii Virtual Console
The last time these three games -- Kirby's Adventure, Ice Climber, and Kid Icarus -- were all gathered on your Nintendo system, Kirby's producer wasn't yet head of Nintendo, Kid Icarus' creator had gone on to create the Game Boy, and the adorable Ice Climbers had no idea they would be duking it out in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the future. And so, another Virtual Console Monday comes and goes, again just barely missing that promise of four new titles. But that's okay, we're still working on last week's Super Mario World ... though we would like to get our hands back on Kid Icarus. He may not have ever made it to DS or The Console Formerly Known as Revolution as rumored but he did make it to Wii intact. All three NES titles will be available at 9am PT for the standard NES fare of 500 Wii Points.

Great, Kid Icarus and Kirby Adventure are two games I've always wanted to play but could never find an NES cart for.
Also Peach and Bowser are getting Married:

Splitting hairs here, but by the time Kirby's Adventure joined the fray, the Game Boy was created. Just a thought.
Shmil @ Feb 12th 2007 10:36AM
making *hate* templates seems to be the popluar thing to do nowadays so here's a template for everyone out there
OMFG!!1! s0 ghe1! just download an 3Mu1At0R 4 FR33!
Genius @ Feb 12th 2007 10:39AM
Great job Nintendo... Now that you took that effortless 5 minutes of time it took to put Kid Icarus onto the overpriced VC, how about you spend some real goddamn time giving us a new Icarus game.
BOK @ Feb 12th 2007 10:47AM
"OMFG!!1! s0 ghe1! just download an 3Mu1At0R 4 FR33!"
When will people realize that making fun of Internet idiot speech is even worse than Internet idiot speech itself and not funny at all?
Crono @ Feb 12th 2007 10:50AM
@ BOK
Never.
@ Topic.
I was so hoping for Zelda II. Its my favorite NES game, and my Cart hasn't worked for a few years now.
I can now say that there are lots of good games on the VC.
C. Grant @ Feb 12th 2007 10:54AM
Datix: Right! I changed my angle half way through and neglected to change that part! Updated. =)
Coolie @ Feb 12th 2007 10:58AM
Who do I have to kill to get Streets of Rage already?
Steve @ Feb 12th 2007 11:10AM
If you liked the original Kid Icarus you may not be aware that it had a underpromoted sequel on the original Game Boy called Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. I bought a used copy off Amazon last summer and was surprised by the quality because it was better than the original. The game has nearly the same layout as the first but the sprites were better detailed, the inability to move backwards on a level was removed, and the design and play style of the final level just made more sense.
So if you have a Gameboy Advance or a Gameboy Player SNES/GCN player you may want to pick it up.
bm @ Feb 12th 2007 11:12AM
Anybody who hasn't played Kirby's Adventure really should. It has tons of levels (more than most modern games), an ungodly amount of secrets (more than most modern games), and a load of different skills/transformations that are frankly more interesting than what passes off for gameplay in most modern games.
Beaudry @ Feb 12th 2007 11:22AM
I'll drop $5 for Kid Icarus.
I do wish they had a demo version of games like Xbox Live, though.
Rolken @ Feb 12th 2007 11:44AM
Nintendo never promised four VC games a week. Here's the original text from the press release:
"Every Monday starting Dec. 4, Nintendo will add classic games to the popular new Wii™ video game console's Wii Shop Channel. Four games will be added at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Dec. 4."
They promised four games on December 4; they only said 'add classic games' of every week thereafter.
samfish @ Feb 12th 2007 12:17PM
Sweet...2 awesome games I haven't played in years and one I haven't played...ever (Ice Climbers).
There goes $15 smackers when I get home from work.
RYAN @ Feb 12th 2007 12:33PM
but which should I get.....Kirby or Icarus???
Thrawn @ Feb 12th 2007 12:35PM
Kid Icarus!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111 Yes.
And just in time for Valentine's Day...how cute/repulsive.
Sensai @ Feb 12th 2007 12:44PM
'I was so hoping for Zelda II. Its my favorite NES game...'
Weird. Most people hate that game.
And this is excellent. I never had Ice Climber or Icarus, so I'm excited and will go download those now.
Kirby, on the other hand, I've played to death...but will still probably download, as it's one of those great classic never-get-old games.
Ken @ Feb 12th 2007 1:29PM
I liked Zelda 2 as well. Most critics didn't though.
But YESSS to Kid Icarus. Man... It's been YEARS since I've played that game!
Grant @ Feb 12th 2007 1:37PM
ice climbers is a good time killer, but it doesn't really have what it takes to get you hooked, the whole experience just kinda feels disconnected, but then again i feel like most games with a non-linear level select do.
Kirby is awesome, i put the rom on my moto q and have been wasting way too much class time on it.
i honestly think kirby is one of the best deals on the VC right now, since it was developed so late in the NES's life, it really looks and plays great, the graphics are on par with SMB3.
NeoSkye @ Feb 12th 2007 1:44PM
Um, this is splitting hairs a little too, but you can't say he didn't make it onto the console formerly known as Revolution when he is now on the Wii(formerly known as Revolution) and may still get a Wii title all his own.
Crono @ Feb 12th 2007 2:01PM
I didn't own Zelda 1 until many years later (when Mario 3 came out, incidentally). I received Zelda II as a gift, and I really wasn't happy about it at the time.
But as my brother and I played it, it grew on us. It is the deepest, darkest zelda ever, until TP came. OoT is a deeper game, but TP is deeper AND darker.
And I likes both.
Boomaga @ Feb 12th 2007 2:11PM
Well, looks like I'll be DLing 2 VC games when I get home today.
But not Ice Climber... that game is lies and hatred incarnate.
moofree @ Feb 12th 2007 2:29PM
Does Kirby have some lag on the VC like it does on the NES?
number40one @ Feb 12th 2007 3:05PM
I can't believe how much fun Super Mario World has been this past week. And I'm not even finished yet. Such a satisfying game to play, and I can honestly say that I enjoy it more than NSMB... except for the fact that the button layout on a GC controller is completely wonkey for playing SMW...
Now, if I can only get myself to stop trying to do a butt-stomp...
emmzee @ Feb 12th 2007 3:15PM
If you missed out on Kirby's Adventure on the NES, you really need to get it. It's extremely fun to play. Some will find it a bit on the easy side, but I prefer that somewhat to insanely hard games. I personally still like the NES Kirby the best out of all the Kirby games. Nostalgia aside, I'd even choose Kirby instead of Kid Icarus, if I had to choose just one. Even though Kid Icarus was awesome back in the day (Eggplant Wizards!) it doesn't hold up as well nowadays.
rockintom99 @ Feb 12th 2007 3:33PM
Kirby's adventure = best evar. Unfortunately, I don't have a wii. Fortunately, I have an NES.
Rubang B @ Feb 12th 2007 4:25PM
I swear I taught myself how to read JUST so I could play Zelda II. That game is awesome. Anyway, I still have working cartridges of Kid Icarus and Kirby's Adventure, but damn if I'm not tempted to buy Kid Icarus again just to use the suspend feature instead of writing down my passwords. Suspending NES games is the new hotness.
snoopdiggity @ Feb 12th 2007 4:41PM
Just watch out for the Eggplant Wizards.
If you get eggplanted, then you are gonna be stuck.
I loved this game. Especially killing medusa at the end.
FYI: there is a place you can sit and not get hit with medusa, close to her eye and above her nose. you will find it. Good Luck!
Thad @ Feb 12th 2007 5:28PM
"He may not have ever made it to DS or The Console Formerly Known as Revolution as rumored but he did make it to Wii intact."
Uh, the Wii IS the console formerly known as Revolution.
Tacoman @ Feb 12th 2007 7:17PM
Ice Climbers was one of the first games I looked forward to downloading when I heard about VC. This is seriously the best batch of releases yet!
I can also sit at home alone and play Kid Icarus all night on Valentine's...yay?
Mr Khan @ Feb 12th 2007 7:50PM
loving Ice Climber so far
The game plays just like that one stage from SSBM promises
Nana and Popo FTW
Mr Khan @ Feb 12th 2007 7:51PM
Actually, on a thought, this would be a good game to revive on the Wii
Make it sort of like Forever Blue, but with Mountain Climbing instead of Scuba Diving...
RYAN @ Feb 13th 2007 9:41AM
so i can officially say now that Kirby's Adventure rocks the casbah. I'm having a blast with it! I was afraid upon reading the reviews, that there would only be 7 levels. What they don't define though, is that it's more like 7 worlds as in Super Mario. Each level is broken down into 6 individual levels, with minigames and plenty of secrets in each level. LOADS OF FUN.
TwilightKnight @ Feb 13th 2007 4:55PM
Another monday and another list of good games. We may of gotten Ice Climbers in there but hey, at least it isn't Root Beer Tapper or you know, NOTHING AT ALL.
If Genuis can provide factual evidence that it literally took Nintendo 5 minutes to emulate a game and put it onto a country wide download service then I will stop thinking that he/she is a fuckwad and/or just stupid.
Since Genuis covered the pointless emulation bullet point we still need someone to say that illegal emulation on a PC is still better. Any Takers?
Only3Penguins @ Feb 13th 2007 4:57PM
Anyone notice that before downloading Kid Icarus, there is a warning, similar to Mario Kart 64's, about how the password feature supposedly doesn't work in the VC version, despite the in-game operations manual indicating that the passwords DO work? Haven't actually tried a password for myself yet, but it's a weird inconsistency either way.
xero @ Feb 13th 2007 9:49PM
They never promised four games every monday. They promised they'd add games every monday and then said they'd be adding four games that monday they announced it...
"Every Monday starting Dec. 4, Nintendo will add classic games to the popular new Wii™ video game console's Wii Shop Channel. Four games will be added at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Dec. 4."
